Let’s Discuss Supernatural Season Nine, Season Divine
Now that’s it’s Hellatus, it’s time to bring back our Let’s Discuss threads. Season nine is a wrap and as usual there’s a lot to discuss. Here is the thread for those who liked it.
We started with Sam hosting an angel and Dean becoming a demon. It has certainly brought out some strong feelings, especially the finale. Here’s a thread to discuss the good from season nine. What did you like? Was Abaddon a great villain? Did Gadreel draw you in? Was Dean’s trip to demonhood believable? Did you feel for Sam’s possession? Where did the story go right? For those who have mostly good things to say about the season, this is your thread.
As in all discussion threads the rules are relaxed. That said no bashing of other posters. No bashing of actors. If your view is mostly positive, but has some negatives mixed in, you can talk about both, but if you find yourself going mostly negative, there’s a different thread for that. This is for the people who look back on the season fondly, for the most part.
I loved: Tahmoh Penikett playing Gadreel, Crowley story arc this season way better than last season, last episode. Of course, Jensen, Jared, Misha, and Mark had been fantastic like they usually are. I enjoyed seeing again Sherriff Miller, Mama Tran, and, Alaina Huffman had been great playing Abaddon. I didn’t like Kevin’s dead, and all the ridiculous “bother conflict”, but overall this season was better than last season. I’m looking forward to the next season!
I really enjoyed this season. I liked the parallels to seasons 4 & 5 with role reversals for the brothers. I think Mark Sheppard was phenomenal this season. There was also more for Misha to work with while he was human. My heart melts just thinking about Castiel’s speech to the newborn. Timothy Omundson made the Cain story line even better. It was nostalgic to see the Ghostfacers, Death, & Tessa again. I remember the excitement when Sam’s eyes would flash blue & we’d see those broken wings. Now there’s a whole new reaction to Dean’s black eyes. Oh the possibilities.
I liked GADREEL, he, to me is the ORIGINAL VICTIM. Before EVE.
Seeing DEAN with black eyes in real life is scary but oh so many possibilities.
Glad Cas has pop culture and literature in his head. ABOUT DAMN TIME.
The future looks more promising now. With this show til the end, hope they bring my JOY back.
The last episode, I loved Jensen’s performance. Heartbreaking! Loved Sam’s “I lied!” and Dean’s “‘m proud of US!”
BUT, didn’t like the black eyes or Dean becoming more than my very human hero! Didn’t like blood drinking Sam and won’t like
demon Dean, I’m sure. Can’t they be brothers and both human at the same time?
Mark Shepherd is magnificent and good for him becoming featured. Our show does have the best guest stars ever!
Loved “Dog Dean Afternoon” as a fun fun romp and a happy Dean for a change. Loved “Bad Boys” for Sam discovering things he never knew before
about his brother. Not the mytharc, but then the mytharcs have not (for me) been the most entertaining since season four and the angels for the most part are dull dull dull and uninteresting. (the archangels excepted, and who’s left? Gabriel, (not dead I hope), Michael in the cage).
Loved to see Harry and Ed again, but very sad for their break up and hope they make it up. We need the Ghostfacers to survive!
Abaddon was an entirely evil and fierce Knight of Hell. Alaina was fantastic!
Hated for Garth to be a werewolf! Cure him in the future please.
Missed Bobby something fierce!
Liked Gadreel and too bad he had to kill himself to be redeemed. Kevin was a beloved character, so he MUST be killed off! Grrr!
Jensen, Jared, Misha and Mark. Amazing, each and every one of you. Thank you for giving your all, and thank the crew who bring us this wonderful show!
Grieving for Dean.
My Men of SPN đ
Jensen, Jared, Misha and Mark.
I loved this season. Not every episode worked and all the breaks really upset the rhythm of the story but for the most part I was really satisfied. If I was going to make any suggestion could we please have Jeremy Carver write more episodes? And maybe listen to Jared for next year. I watched the season opener last night and knowing where it was all going to end up made Dean’s choices all that more heartbreaking. And of course the finale just crushed me as it should have. I couldn’t be more excited for next season.
With the J’s and the M’s what could possibly go wrong.
I loved the MOC story and that Dean is now a demon, even thought it was predictable and Jensen told us at the Upfronts LOL. I like that Crowley conned Dean like Ruby conned Sam in S4-good parallel. Lassie, er I mean Timothy Omundson was fabulous. Sam as the angel was good and bring back Angel Hannah next season.
never heard it put that way, ruby/sam–dean/Crowley. thanks. there was an angel sam….hummm
here it is, the shortest comment I’ve ever given …..I loved every minute of s9….the end. :);)
đŽ
I told you I was going to agree with everything you were going to say. And I am…and I do. đ
Couldn’t agree more! đ

Ha, ha, me too! đ
Contrary to my recent postings on the reviews, there was a lot to like about S9…
Acting was top notch. Jared, Jensen, Misha, and Mark were great, particularly Jared with the angel possession and Dean with the Mark of Cain/addiction.
Many of the standalone/MOTW episodes were creative and well thought out without seeming like repeats of prior MOTW storylines.
Castiel’s story arc/transformation in to a new type of angel with the human qualities of compassion/empathy was good.
Crowley’s almost human arc was intriguing and it was great seeing him interact more with Sam and Dean, particularly Dean.
Abaddon was a fun “bad guy”; a little one dimensional and probably not good for the long haul, but a great run for the world’s angriest ginger.
Tim Omundson made a big impact in his one appearance as Cain; hope we get to see him in S10. Tahmoh Penikett was great as Gadreel; would have been better to see more of his journey, and still conflicted as to his redemption (he did kill Kevin after all, the bastard) but he was a great addition nonetheless.
After 6 seasons, great to finally get some meaningful Sam and Castiel scenes.
Great to get Sheriff Jody back and hope we see more of her in S10.
Jared was brilliant. The acting he does with minimal dialogue is commendable.
Jensen’s portrayal of a Dean loosing his humanity was commendable .
I actually liked the story (pacing was the problem).
Liked Metatron finally in the final episode.Castiel became interesting too.Hope they continue.
Gadreel was a good additional character..would have preferred him not dead. Some good angels finally.
Abaddon was good.Would have preferred a grander death. But one of the better enemies.
Tim Omundson was very good as cain.
Hi all,
I got a nice idea at work today because of the discussion with others on a chat room. I hope the wind takes over this and we get a lot of positive discussion going on. Anyway, my idea is this:
1. Choose one episode from season nine
– It can be your favorite, the one you liked the less (I hope someone dares to tackle âThe episode we shall not name âcoughBloodlinescoughâ or just randomly picked episode and write all the positive things you notice or OMG observations! It doesnât matter if somebody has written about that episode already it matters that people can discuss about every part of the episode in a positive light.
– I will start it by re-watching my episode. Maybe people will see new things from different perspective?
2. Choose a character/actor from season nine.
– Same reasons above and over all how he/she made season 9 memorable
3. Choose any other aspect of season 9 (Angels, demons, special effects, story, sky is the limit)

2. Gadreel/Tahmoh Penikett/Jared Padalecki
(aka Ezekiel, Samiel, Samreel)
I loved Tahmoh already from Dollhouse but he totally rocked playing Gadreel. Jared and him made the character really memorable but it was this quote: âHe was an indirect catalyst for Lucifer’s corruption of man, the creation of demons, God’s leaving, the Apocalypse and thus the events of the entire series itself⌠Gadreel was once God’s most trusted angel.
He was stationed at the Garden of Eden to protect it from evil. However, he failed at this task by letting the serpent in, cursing the Earth with evil, and so was dishonored but would claim that it was a mistake and not his fault, implying that he let Lucifer in by accident without knowing his intentions. This was, in fact, the reason God left Heaven. His actions led to the chaos in the universe, the severity of which caused him to be locked in the darkest dungeon in Heaven for thousands of years, something that, according to Metatron, broke God’s heart.âfrom http://supernatural.wikia.com/wiki/Gadreel made me really love the character and it made it interesting. Also that it was portrayed by two actors made it unique. And the character grew during the whole season. I am not the only one who thinks like this about the character.
In the beginning Gadreel was called to heal Sam. He seemed sincere and kind and Dean leaping on faith who he thought Gadreel was and Castiel saying he is a good angel let Gadreel posses Sam. A thing that I felt in my gut didnât feel right but I hoped for the best. After that Gadreel kept Dean in fear of losing his brother to not tell Sam about him nor Castiel. Dean kept lying even if he struggled with it but also we saw a different side from Ezekiel. Using the situation to his own means and also showing him vulnerable and fearing the other angels.
One of the most memorable and awesome scene was when Sam got knocked unconscious and Gadreel rose spreading his broken wings. The music and⌠just wow. The demons knew they were goners. Even if Gadreel had his own agenda, he also did good. He kept Sam alive, Ressed/healed Castiel and Charlie for Dean.
Things turn worse as Metatron, the serpent caught up on him. Gadreel wanted to redeem himself And Metatron played fully on that. He betrayed Dean who trusted him and killed Kevin. The monstrosities he did he didnât feel comfortable. It showed clearly at the start. The torturer angel from heaven he didnât have tough time kill but his friend was another matter.
He was now on a mission so when he was caught he was determined and sure they would not get Sam freed. He even taunted Dean. He was wrong as Sam was strong and he kicked him out. ( I would have loved to see Gadreel fight more. Tahmoh does his own stunts).
How Gadreel talks is also what is really nice. Canât put my finger on it but the actors brought out really different flavors with it. I could listen him talk a long while. Anyway, the story shifts and Gadreel is found out working to Metatron. Right hand man and they knew Metatron ordered him to kill Kevin. Gadreel is caught and taunts both brothers as it is clearly shown he is afraid of being a prisoner.
Gadreel shifts from that moment as he was caught to doubt about his choice and about Metatron and how he talks. That battle goes on as Castiel contacts him and we see him value honor in combat also he can be comical as the scene with Metatron shows.
Metatron: Just a second. (Gadreel comes in a second later)
Gadreel: I gave you a second.
Metatron: You are such an… angel sometimes.
Gadreel turns tides and it is amazing how the dilemma is throughout shown on what he says, tone of voice and his face. He decides to help the good guys. Not without bumps, like Dean trying to kill him. Castiel healing him makes a big impression on him and also his desperation when he ends up in jail. Hs biggest fear.
In the end we see him sacrifice himself for Castiel to set him free from jail. His redemption leads to capturing of Metatron but unfortunately he couldnât save the one that gave him a shelter, trusted him and the one he traveled with, Dean. But he got peace.
All in all. Awesome character and actors. Last but not least quote from Gadreel.
Gadreel: I love humanity!
PS. Could Tahmoh stop dying on every role he has? He starts to be as bad as Shean Bean or any unfortunate character in Game of Thrones.
Gadreel, thou shall be missed. (Fingers crossed you will be back)

When I did my picks for episodes in S9 I chose I Think I’m Going To Like It Here as my second choice. After watching it again I will have to say it’s my favorite of the season. Dean was so desperate to save Sam. He knew Sam would be mad but how little he knew how bad it was all going to turn out. But it really had everything (even Bobby and Death). I thought it set up the season really well. Angels confused and frightened, Castiel human learning how fragile humans were, the affects of the trials weren’t waved away and Dean’s awful dilemma. I loved every minute of it.
The introduction of Zeke/Gad was also another OMG what have you done Dean moment. In Dean’s defense Gadreel saved Dean’s life, Cas vouched for him (of course he thought he was someone else) and he didn’t harm Sam (not really at any point did he physically harm Sam even when he threatened to) so I can see the choice Dean made was one that Dean would make. Especially since at the time he thought that Sam would be alive albeit angry. He could deal with that.
I will have to say that Crowley was my favorite character of the season. All through the season you just knew he was manipulating the brothers. Even in the dungeon he was controlling the situation. And playing on Dean’s mental state was so fascinating to watch. Mark Shepard has been such a wonderful addition to the show. The demon story has been there from the first scene in episode one and they are still the biggest bad for the brothers. The Winchesters have yet to get a handle on Crowley. I do love that about his character. I have to say my favorite scene from SP was the witch and Crowley. It was hysterical. His character this year being humanized in lesser hands would have been cheesy but in MS hands it was fun to watch. So yes Crowley for me. So glad that Mark S is going to be a series regular.
But I have already said I love this season and I think on a re-watch without the unbelievably annoying breaks and “you know what” I think the season is going to flow a little better. Serialized stories must be difficult to plot out over 23 episodes. Hat’s off to the cast and crew for pulling it off.
Spot on Cheryl!
Oh, and on First born I realised that when Dean was in the bar trying to find Gadreel and drinking Crowley was immediately there to swoon Dean. Dean’s target Gadreel was gone so Crowley tossed immediately Abaddon to him. Dean needed a target and he took it no matter who gave it. He just didn’t want to think what he had done.
Sneaky Crowley. đ

Im just worried about the “new” relationship between Sammy and Dean. I feel the same way in that they were on edge with each other most of the season and its finally resolved with “I lied” and ” Aint that a bitch”. One of my favorite parts of the whole show is Sammy/Dean as one. Its either both or none. Both are each others weakness and I completely expected Sam to carry Dean back and do everything in his power to bring him back. Now though, Dean will be a Demon.
First, if Dean is a demon, his feelings towards Sammy arent going to be completely the same… that is he may still have effects from the mark of Cain. Second, Dean isnt going to want to stay a demon. If his soul hasnt really had time to become “evil” hes gonna want cured ASAP. Which brings me to number three, will curing him even work? It almost did for Crowley, but knowing this show, anything is possible. I personally, am going to dislike demon Dean I think. Lastly, how will the new season focus on new cases and saving people, when one hunter is a demon and the other is trying to fix him and help an angel fix Heaven?
Rant over. đ I cannot wait for season 10 in October and im so glad to be a part of this fandom! The actors were all great and I love the bond that Jensen and Jared have that makes death scenes 100 times more realistic. I think that Castiel finding his grace will be a large part of the story line also.
The best part of the season for me was Jared playing Sam/Gadreel; switching characters mid-sentence at times.
My one and only expectation/prediction to come true was Gadreelâs redemption. In fact, I had hoped that not only would he be redeemed but perhaps become a friend for Sam. His speech at the end was very powerful, very emotional.
I was fascinated by the MOC although everyone had it all figured out by the time they finally got to the punch line.
Jared and Jensen were magnificent, as usual. I cried when Jared cried.
Crowley & Castiel had real character development. I love Crowley, so deliciously evil and unpredictable.
Guest stars, Penikett and Omundson, both had very powerful performances. Hate that Gad died. Should have been Metatron.
It was great seeing Bobby. And poor little Kevin. His death was heartbreaking.
