Robin’s Rambles: Supernatural 9.11 – “First Born”
1863 – Jasper Springs, MS – Demons insist that the knight must be protected. A bunch of demons are killed by Cain; pink light fills the cabin.
Crowley shows up on a bar stool beside Dean and tells him they must go after the First Blade, which can kill Abaddon–and a weapon John Winchester once went after and might have in his storage container. Out comes John’s old notebook and great one-liners from Crowley. Buddy comedy, indeed! A demon overhears them, natch.
Bunker – Cas complains that as a human, he loved PB&J, but now, it’s disgusting. While healing Sam, he senses grace inside him and wants to call Dean. Sam says no.
Storage container – Crowley pisses Dean off when he reminds him that, having been “inside” Sam, they’re practically family, but Dean grabs him by the lapels and says they are NOT. The demon is kept at bay by a devils trap. They find a woman named Tara who helped John with a case.
Doing research, Sam and Cas learn about angels leaving behind pieces of themselves which could be extracted with a nasty-looking hypodermic needle. They could track Gadreel with a spell using that grace. Cas tries to talk Sam out of doing this, but Sam is determined.
Dean and Crowley visit Tara, whose bum knee tells her Crowley’s a demon. She remembers John well and knows Dean. She tosses holy water at Dean. He asks her about the First Blade and explains about Abaddon. She says she and John took out a demon who told them about the First Blade. They killed the demon and had a lovely weekend together. (Crowley grinned.) she found a location spell but was missing one ingredient–essence of crack. She frees Crowley from her devils trap and he goes to Belize to get it. She warns him about buddying up with the King of Hell. He assures her he’s got this. Same way your father sounded when he said he’d call me, she says. Ouch! They mix up the potion with Crowley’s addition, toss it on a map, and it burns, leaving Missouri the open state. Tara refuses to go if Crowley does.
When they arrive, Crowley is terrified–it’s Cain, the Father of Murder! The demon wants to leave right away. But Cain appears before them and tells Crowley they aren’t going anywhere.
Seated inside on the sofa, Dean realizes Crowley can’t zap himself out, cuz of Cain. After Cain killed Abel, he became a demon who killed thousands and disappeared. Cain enters with tea and asks if they keep bees, very relaxing. Bees are dying, and man will too. Cain wants to know why a Winchester and the King of Hell are looking for him–and how they found him. Crowley is shaking with fear. Cain shuts him silent. Dean asks for the First Blade to kill Abaddon; the location spell for the blade led them here.
A demon comes to Tara looking for “a couple of friends,” her demon knee gives him away and she fires at him with her shotgun.
Cain says once per century company is enough for him; they can let themselves out. Dean refuses to leave without the blade. Cain sees where Dean gets his rep for bravery. I’m an all-in kinda guy, agrees Dean. I trained the knights of hell, Abaddon included, reveals Cain, it wasn’t the archangels that slaughtered the knights–it was me. Why did you turn on your own? Dean asks. Cain doesn’t answer, he says he must go to town, and says goodbye and that Dean is not to return. With Crowley arguing the plan by the Impala, Dean insists they’ll return to the house while Cain is gone and “Take what’s ours.”
Cas reminds Sam that he chose not to go through with the trials and sacrifice himself–you and Dean chose each other. Sam remembers–but then, Dean made a choice for me–I could have put a stop to all this, closed the gates of hell–Dean is gone, and if I can find Gadreel, I can fix this–let’s settle my human debts.
Dean and Crowley search the house for the blade, the latter nervously insisting this is the dumbest thing Dean’s ever done. Dean finds a photo of a woman wearing a ring similar to Cain’s.
The demon who visited Tara, a gunshot hole in his face, pulls up to Cain’s house, calling for the backup of “everybody” to come meet him.
A reluctant Cas sticks the needle into Sam’s neck to extract the grace, but he needs more and has to go in deeper. It’s agonizing. Sam is thrust back into memories some bad memories, which Cas says is regression to his state before Gadreel. Even though continuing is dangerous, Sam insists Cas go on, pushing the hypo in deeper to extract more grace.
Crowley reports to Dean his search didn’t even turn up porn. (Lol!) Dean shows him the photo of the woman Cain married. They hear Cain return, but find they’re locked in. That belongs to me, Cain says of the photo. The demon outside announces he wants Crowley and Dean–and that he killed Tara, who revealed Cain’s hideout. They’re Abaddon’s demons. Cain tells Dean he’s brave and impulsive–lives up to his rep. He’s retired and will sit this one out. If they survive, he’ll fix them dinner before he disappears again.
Noting Sam is weakening, Cas asks, “Why do the Winchesters run toward death.” Sam doesn’t want him to stop. Cas learned how precious life was when he died as a human and must be protected at all costs, even a life as pig-headed as a Winchester’s. My life isn’t worth more than anyone else’s says Sam, not yours, Dean’s, or Kevin’s. Please help me do one thing right–keep going.” (Sob!) He thrusts in the needle, and Sam screams in pain.
While Cain sits at the kitchen table, shucking corn, he allows four demons in for Dean to fight while he watches. It’s brutal and nasty, but Dean manages to dispatch all three. In the front room, a demon attacks the King of Hell, who tells him, “You’re good, but I’m Crowley.”
When it’s over, Cain calls Dean a kindred spirit. I didn’t kill my brother, says Dean. You saved yours, says Cain, why? You never give up on family, says Dean. Where’s yours now? Cain asks. Dean doesn’t want to play games, he just wants the blade. Cain has nothing to hand over–it’s gone.
Cas removes the hypo from Sam’s throat, the grace gleaming inside. His nose and eye are bleeding badly. Sam awakens and Cas presses two fingers to his forehead and announces he has healed him completely, and whatever grace was inside him is gone now; whatever was left of Gadreel is in the hypo and they’ll try with what they have. Damn it, says Sam. I want Gadreel to pay as much as you do, says Cas, but nothing is worth losing you–being human didn’t just change my view of food, it changed my view of you–I can relate, now, to how you feel–the only one who has screwed things up more consistently than you is me–and now, I know what that guilt feels like and I know what it means to feel sorry, Sam–I am sorry. I know, Sam says. Old me would have jammed that needle in deeper until you died, admits Cas, because the ends always justified the means, but what I went through, well, that PB&J, taught me that angels can change, so, who knows, maybe Winchesters can, too. Cas takes the box in which he carefully placed the hypo containing Gadreel’s grace and walks away, leaving Sam sitting there to think.
Cas’ PB&J speech to Sam made me cry so hard!
The spell brought you to the source of the blade’s power, explains Cain, who rolls up his sleeve to reveal a scar that looks like a lobster on his forearm. It’s the bloody mark of Cain, says Crowley, crossing himself. Given by Lucifer himself, says Cain, the mark and blade go together, and one is useless without the other; the blade is just an old bone. The jawbone of an animal, says Dean, the jawbone you used to kill Abel, because he was God’s favorite. Abel wasn’t talking to God, but Lucifer, corrects Cain, he was going to make my brother into his pet–I couldn’t bear to watch him be corrupted, so I offered a deal–Abel’s soul in heaven for my soul in hell–Lucifer accepted, as long as I was the one who sent Abel to heaven–so I killed my brother and became a soldier of hell–knight–my knights and I, we did horrible things, for centuries. . . Then you met Colette, says Dean. She knew who and what I was, yet loved me unconditionally, says Cain, she asked one thing, that I stop. When the knights found out, they took retribution, they took Colette, so I took the First Blade back up, it felt so good to have it in my hands again, and I slaughtered the knights of hell. Not all of them, points out Dean.
Flashback to the cabin – Cain kills the demons guarding Abaddon, who has possessed Colette. Abaddon first tries to make Cain stay with them, but he refuses, so Abaddon breaks Colette from the inside, taunting Cain that if she can’t have him, neither can Colette. She flees the dying body, leaving Cain to cradle his wife.
So I buried her and walked away says Cain. Dean brusquely expresses condolences, but insists he must get rid of Abaddon. Cain refuses. Dean slams him against the door and says, “Listen, you SOB, you may be done killing, but I’m not.” He presses his demon blade into Cain for emphasis. Cain shoves the knife into himself and says angrily, “You never give up on anything, do you?” Then he disappears. Hearing a ruckus outside, they look to see many demons approaching the house in the darkness. Crowley promises to stay as long as he can. You’re a peach, says Dean.
Cain goes to his wife’s grave and tells her he knows she watches over him, but he needs her to look away now. He kisses her grave.
Demons surround the house and bang at the doors. Cain reappears and offers Dean the Mark–it can be transferred to someone worthy–a killer like Cain. It can kill Abaddon but comes with a great burden. Dean accepts. Cain grabs his arm and transfers the scar from his own arm to Dean’s; it burns, and Dean grunts from the pain. Cain tells him he stashed the blade at the bottom of the deepest ocean. Cain makes Dean promise to find the blade, kill Abaddon, come to him when he calls and use the blade to kill Cain. Why? Dean asks. For what I’m about to do, says Cain, and snaps his fingers so the demons can enter the house?
Cain banishes Crowley and Dean from the house, which fills with bright red light as he kills all the demons en masse. Dean and Crowley race to the car and leave.
Sam and Cas mix up the potion to find Gadreel, but Cas sadly reports they didn’t have enough grace for it to work. Sam apologies sand says Cas was right about everything. He throws his arms around the angel and hugs him. This is the part where you hug back, says Sam. Oh, right, sorry, says Cas, and tentatively hugs Sam back. There you go, says Sam. Metatron is the key to fixing everything that’s wrong, says Cas, I’m going to find him. He clasps Sam’s shoulder. We could use Dean’s help finding Gadreel and Metatron, says Cas. “We’ve got this,” Sam assures him. Awwwww, forgive your bro, Sammy, he’s coming home with a scary scar.
Dean pulls over. He was right, you are worthy, says Crowley. Now you’re gonna get all touchy-feely, too? Dean says. Your problem is nobody hates you more than you do, says Crowley, believe me, I’ve tried. He assures Dean he can find the blade at the bottom of the ocean and bring it to him. Dean saw him kill that one demon, then he just sat back and watched the show–you knew about everything–you played me–why? You never would have given me the blade, says Crowley–who can say no to you?–I needed you to play along. You knew we were being followed and you didn’t say anything, accuses Dean. Cain would want to see his prizefighter up close, says Crowley, you plus demons equals Fight Night. Tara died thanks to you, Dean reminds him. Omelettes, broken eggs, etc., shrugs Crowley. Dean punches him. After I kill Abaddon, you’re next! Dean shouts. You don’t mean that, we’re having too much fun, says Crowley–listen up!–even with the blade, we’re gonna need all the help we can get against Abaddon. Go find the blade, says Dean. Always something with you boys, isn’t it? grumbles Crowley. Dean, alone, leans against the Impala, wincing at the pain from his new scar.
1. I loved this episode more than any other this season! 10/10, my first perfect score. You?
2. So many feels! How did you like the Cas/Sam dynamic? I was in tears when Cas made that sweet speech to Sam. What did you think?
3. Cain was a fascinating character. What did you think of the SPN alteration to the Cain/Abel story?
4. No matter how bad Crowley is, no matter what he does, he’s still such a lovable rogue. How did you feel about him tricking Dean into meeting Cain to get the mark and the bone.
5. I wonder–did Cas see the location of Gadreel and for some reason keep it from Sam? How subtle were Cas’ suggestions for getting Sam and Dean back together?
6. Love will conquer all–or at least make a violent man make peace. What did you think of Cain’s reason for becoming a peaceful man? Colette asked him to stop killing, and he did. When she was murdered, he took it up again.
7. Now Dean has the mark, and of course, it’s a burden with a lot of responsibility. How do you foresee the remainder of season 9 with this hanging over Dean’s head–arm?
Me thinks that would be `essence of Kraken` that Tara was looking for…(not essence of crack!) 😆

Essence of Kraken is correct. I know that only because I had the closed captioning on. 🙂 Thanks for the recap Robin! It was about a 7-8 for me. I thought the last episode was much closer to a 10! I haven’t rewatched but the Cas/Sam scenes bothered me on first view. As much as I want them to be closer and bond, the torture and the talk of Sam’s failures and just didn’t set right. I don’t see most of Sam’s past actions as failures or feel that he need to keep atoning. Much of what he has done was for the right reasons. I realize this might be an attempt by the show to show how Sam feels about himself vs how they are portraying him but still…
I thought Tim Omundson was quite nice as Cain. Looking forward to where this is going!
I don’t see the MoC on Dean’s arm going to anywhere good. I think with his current mindset it might prove to be very bad indeed.
All in all not a bad episode. 🙂 I do want the brothers back on the same page and path. I like a little angst but only if it leads to a better relationship going forward.

No one has mentioned that Cain SILENCED Crowley. WTH, how is that possible….. What kind of juju does Cain have……What does that mean………….

And no one’s mentioned the new (at least for me) room in the bunker – a medical ward where Cas tries to cure Sam from angelic grace. If there is some of this grace left in Sam it’s good, right?
They must nave used this hospital aplenty last season, but I don’t remember…

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned in any of the reviews is the kinder, gentler, trickster Crowley. Its quiet and its subtle but if you knowxwhen to look and listen. Crowley is just…nicer, for lack of a better word. He shows emotions around Dean he never would’ve before. His last words to Dean are…”I know. I’ve tried.”(To hate Dean. Hes actually saying to Dean that he likes him in his guarded, roundabout way.
His behaviour around Cain was open and unguarded in front of Dean. Previously he never would have shown fear in front of Dean. Hes never really acted afraid of Sam or Dean but there was at least some tension there. Last not any tension towards Dean from Crowley was entirely lacking. It was more like he was spending time with an old friend he knows is a little mad at him for being a jerk. It least that’s what the dynamic felt like, instead of mortal enemies. I know he sought Dean out to use him to get the Blade but I also got the distinct t impression that Crowley just wanted to be around him. Hes still extremely wary around Sam but he seems to enjoy being around Dean.
As for the Mark of Cain, if Cain can give the mark to Dean couldn’t Dean give the Mark to Crowley later, so he can use the Blade.
This episode threw some real changes at me so I cant even begin to guess where its going from here.
I’m going to go buck wild and state that Crowley may sacrifice something for the brothers. That human blood may have had a more profound effect than we think but we’re all so busy looking at what all the other characters are doing that we’re paying no attention to Crowley.
I loved that Cas first real hug came from Sam.

1.So far this season ‘Road Trip’ was my favorite, but this runs a very close second. 🙂
2.I loved that Sam and Cas finally got to show a friendship. Cas always has had a special friendship with Dean, it was nice seeing him bonding with Sam. His words were right on and it’s awesome that Sam actually listened. I think it meant a lot to Sam to hear it from Cas, an angel. The speech definitely made me tear up. Cas was different, as he mentioned himself, from the human experience. He was more emotional, more careful. His comforting hand on Sam’s head, his worried looks and almost pain at what Sam was going through. Even now, I get a little teary thinking about it.
3. Cain was okay… It was amusing how he just sat there and let everything unfold in front of him. I liked the spin on the biblical take the writers took. It was a good way to tie Cain/Abel’s story in with Sam/Dean’s.
4. I love Mark Sheppard!! His “You’re good, but I’m Crowley” line was the best one-liner yet. He makes me laugh, and that’s good when everything else going on around him is so tragic. I have to admit to being completely snowed. I had no idea he was tricking Dean. I was skeptical that he could sit right next to a demon (at the bar) and not know it, but I brushed it off. And his fear over Cain, all an act… lol. No idea. However, when it came out I wasn’t shocked. I mean this is Crowley. He is somewhat more touchy-feely, but he’s still the King of Hell. AND he wants his home back.
5. I didn’t think that Cas had seen the location of Gadreel… but now that you mentioned it, I am wondering. Hmm… I do however believe that he did NOT remove all the grace from Sam. It was hurting Sam too much, and Cas made a decision to stop. He told a little white-lie, because he knew Sam would put up a fight and want it all removed. His suggestions for Dean and Sam to work together were not subtle at all. H is totally on the boat to get these boys back together.
6. Love will conquer all… enough said. Love between a husband and wife, or love between brothers… 😉
7. I screamed at my TV when Dean agreed to get this mark!! He didn’t even want/let Cain to explain the consequences. Ugh! That boy is always rushing into things, working off his base emotions. But that’s Dean. I am terrified what this is going to bring. Cain is not a happy person and he is completely alone. Plus, does it now mean that Dean is immortal?! I don’t think, as I have heard others predict, that it means he is going to kill Sam. Too obvious and when is SPN ever that? Cain said Dean could have the mark because he is a killer. Yeah he is… he’s killed hundreds of supernatural beings and a few humans who were possessed. MY main thought is that it is not so much who Dean really is, but what he thinks he is. He believes he killed Kevin… so to him he is a murderer. 🙁

As in release the Kraken, eh? I replayed that 5 times, folks, and could not understand that word! Crack made no sense, granted, but I didn’t hear the -en. Laugh now–you all will one day have trouble hearing, too, as age overcomes you. LOL! Maybe I need to smoke some crack. No, never did drugs, never will. Love, Robin

I agree with you here. Sam feel badly about those times he feels he let Dean down. Cas also let Dean down on several occasions, so he shares that with Sam. Cas also feels he screwed up heaven. Both of them were misled by others, Sam by Ruby, Cas by Metatron. Watching them bond in this ep really got to me.
I realize this might be an attempt by the show to show how Sam feels about himself vs how they are portraying him but still…
I agree. I never saw him on Psych, but I thought he was flawless as Cain. All the acting on the show was top-notch.
I thought Tim Omundson was quite nice as Cain. Looking forward to where this is going!
Agreed. That’s far too much power for Dean to handle. He’s too volatile and quick on the trigger for it.
I don’t see the MoC on Dean’s arm going to anywhere good. I think with his current mindset it might prove to be very bad indeed.
All in all not a bad episode. 🙂 I do want the brothers back on the same page and path. I like a little angst but only if it leads to a better relationship going forward.
I think Sam and Dean will be all right very soon. Dean will need his brother to get the bad taste of Crowley out of his mouth.

He shows emotions around Dean he never would’ve before. His last words to Dean are…”I know. I’ve tried.”(To hate Dean. Hes actually saying to Dean that he likes him in his guarded, roundabout way. L
My God, yes! Crowley has changed, at least a bit. He sacrificed Tara, to Dean’s ire, but he did admit to liking Dean, and last week he assured Sam he hadn’t killed Kevin, a nice human thing to do. Methinks the human blood has humanized of’ demon Crowley. I honestly think he was having a great time on this quest with Dean, even if Dean didn’t feel the same. Crowley has never felt that way about Sam.
As for the Mark of Cain, if Cain can give the mark to Dean couldn’t Dean give the Mark to Crowley later, so he can use the Blade.
Absolutely! If Dean will trust Crowley with that kind of power, which in doubt. I also suspect there are going to be serious side effects from this mark even Crowley won’t want.
I’m going to go buck wild and state that Crowley may sacrifice something for the brothers. That human blood may have had a more profound effect than we think but we’re all so busy looking at what all the other characters are doing that we’re paying no attention to Crowley.
That would be cool. But I am paying attention to Crowley; he fascinates me. I want to see him stick around and beat Abaddon.
I loved that Cas first real hug came from Sam.
So did I! Another sniffly moment for me. Cas was so sweet and gentle with Sam, so caring. It’s weird, considering the angel whose grace he stole was a real douche.

I know! Cas was so sweet and gentle, so empathetic. When he returned Sam’s hug, I was crying all over again. They deserved that Bromance award!
3. Cain was okay… It was amusing how he just sat there and let everything unfold in front of him. I liked the spin on the biblical take the writers took. It was a good way to tie Cain/Abel’s story in with Sam/Dean’s.
I agree. But Dean didn’t kill his brother. Cain was summing up Dean’s skills as a killer to see if he deserved the mark. All thanks to Crowley, who was a damn good actor for Dean’s sake!
Crowley is comic relief, evil genius and antagonist all at once–but I believe he’s going to surprise us–and Dean and Sam–down the line. I love Mark Sheppard, too.
I fully agree with everything you said here.
6. Love will conquer all… enough said. Love between a husband and wife, or love between brothers… 😉
That’s my belief in all things, SPN in particular. 😆
Dean is a killer, yes, but not in the same vein as Cain. And THAT is where Dean will get into trouble. That Mark won’t discriminate and might not allow him to pick and choose. The rest of S9 is going to be a nail biter.

Robin

I am not sure it is the mark that picks and chooses. Cain said Lucifer had him kill. But Lucifer is now in a cage and can’t make Dean do anything.
Also, Cain choose to kill the Knights of Hell… which for sure Lucifer did not want… and I would guess the mark would have stopped him if it had that power.
Than Cain retired…. if the mark wanted him to kill how did he resist it?
Or maybe that is part of the burden Cain was talking about? Always struggling and fighting against himself/the mark?
i don’t know. lol… I do know that you’re right it is going to be very interesting watching it play out. I better have my tissues handy.
