The WFB Admins’ Top 15 “Supernatural” Episodes List: #4
#sweetondean’s #4
“Lazarus Rising”
Why: Because it’s epic! Epic Dean pulling himself out of a grave surrounded by devastated and flattened trees, epic Bobby hug, epic Sam hug, epic Ruby reveal and the totally epic entrance of Castiel. I mean the barn door, the explosions, the wings, the curious look on his face. It’s one of the best entrances of any character EVER. In the history of EVER! Am I right?
Every time I watch “Lazarus Rising” I love it. Like LOVE it. The whole scene at the fill up joint that Dean (bow-legged, grubby and wondrous) wanders to after he digs himself out of his coffin. Yikes! There’s no music, just natural sound and sound effects and it makes it really powerful. The Dean reveal at Bobby’s door and both their faces”¦naw”¦and Bobby is all teary, when he stops trying to kill Dean and finally believes its him and then the Dean reveal at Sam’s door. Dean’s face. Sam’s face. Sam’s little gasping noises and eventually, THE HUG. I think it’s my favourite Winchester hug ever.
“Lazarus Rising” launched the angel storyline”¦which mostly I’ve enjoyed. I remember being really quite surprised by the whole thing”¦I was pretty spoiler free back in the day! Cass is just brilliant. His curious face, little cock of his head. He’s so baffled by Dean’s obvious feelings of worthlessness in the face of a second chance. We don’t see much of Cass, but that scene left one hell of an impression on me and many “Supernatural” fans. It’s totally awesome.
Of course the flipside, “Lazarus Rising” is where the all lies really begin. Dean says he doesn’t remember Hell”¦but we see him clearly having flashbacks. Sam says he’s not using his psychic powers”¦but he’s hanging out with Ruby and sending demons back to the pit with his mind. I always feel this is the beginning of where the very deep down, hurt and angry feelings of mistrust started for the Winchester boys, because it was here that they started hiding really big things”¦.for the reason they always have, because they know their brother ain’t gonna like it. Gah!
But I still love it. I watch this one a lot. I mean, the acting is absolutely top notch and it’s written by Mr Kripke and directed by Mr Manners”¦how can you go wrong!
Favourite Quote: It’s a script chocked full of favourite quotes, but I love a bit of foreshadowing so I will go with”¦
Dean: “Why’d you do it?”
Castiel: “Because God commanded it. Because we have work for you.”
Honourable mention:
Castiel: “I’m the one who gripped you tight and raised you from Perdition.”
Honourable honourable mention is from the deleted scene”¦.
Castiel: “Finding a human vessel durable enough to contain me is not easy.”
Dean: “I have that same problem with women.”
Heeee!!!!
Favourite Scene: THE WHOLE EPISODE! Ok, that’s cheating.
1a. Castiel’s epic entrance.
1b. Sam and Dean’s reunion.
Don’t make me choose!
Tomorrow…it’s number 3! So come back then and see what the beginning of our top 3 looks like!
Awesome choices.
There´s nothing to be said about those.
All three of them are just brilliant.
Though you named my own personal number one and two (On the head of a Pin and Lazarus Rising) on four… I can live with that.
When you are that high up… it doesn´t really matter anymore, if you think, they are brilliant, or just the most brilliantest ever :-*
On the Head of a Pin always gets a pass.
Because Christopher Heyerdahl, because of THAT scene.
It might not be politically correct to name a torture scene your third favorite scene on Supernatural ever, but… CHRIST!
It was absolutely perfect, spot on acting.
And watching Alistair completely deconstruct Dean, while being tortured by him, was brilliantly painful and told us all, we needed to know about Dean´s time in Hell.
Btw, the other two scenes are: Castiel´s Entrance in Lazarus Rising and Bobby seeing Dean again in Lazarus Rising. Because: totally badass and absolutely funny, while heartbreakingly emotional
Some of my Favorites!!!!! All of these were so angsty and wonderful! Great picks
This is like last minute at the Oscars! I can’t wait to find out what your first choices are.
”Bon Jovi rocks, on occasion.”
I love that you chose that line, I use that one all the time, because I don’t love Bon Jovi, but hey, sometimes they actually rock pretty good. 😆
Love all these episodes, and No Rest for the Wicked is also on my top 15. Such great write ups by all of you. And OMG Sweetondean – I never saw that deleted scene! That is hysterical! Is that on the DVD?
Hi Grace, yes it’s a deleted scene. If you don’t have it, visit my YouTube channel (it’s sweetondean) because I have it on there. 🙂
Thanks very much Sweetondean. Watched it from your page. Classic Dean. And I love Castiel’s stare when Dean said that! Can’t imagine Misha did not struggle with that.
You guys are killing me!!! These are all my number ones time and again.
And Alice, I too had to suffer through the hellatus for the first time after Dean went to hell. Never had I wanted summer to pass so quickly! Never thought Dean would actually go to hell. It just about killed me, thinking of that all the friggin’ summer! 😥
And Lazarus Rising is right up there too. Both Kripke and Kim masterpieces! Every time I rewatch them I think about the long long summer when I kept feeling “Dean Dean Dean! sob sob!” and how nice it is to be able to pop the next dvd in immediately for instant relief. 😛
On the Head of a Pin is a masterpiece of its own. Writing and acting by all exceptional. Heart ripping sadness, only relieved by the next episode. My heart was in my gut when that episode finished with “I’m not the man either of our fathers wanted me to be!” Baaaaawwwwlllll !!! :sigh:
First things first, I must go watch that deleted scene…
…and I’m back. Awesome. Thanks for that! Wow, you guys have some powerful episodes at #4. On one hand, I’m kicking myself that “On the Head of a Pin” isn’t in my top 15! It’s a crime, because it’s one of my favorites, for all the reasons you give. But then I look at my list and there’s not any one I’m willing to take off, even if I could… so I guess 15 just isn’t enough for ALL my favorites.
At #4 on my list is “Weekend at Bobby’s”. Loved seeing the world from Bobby’s perspective, and all the work he puts into research and helping out other hunters. Plus I’ve always wondered what happens if a monster gets chopped into pieces without the proper formalities. Enter woodchipper! Also, how great were the back and forth impressions between Bobby and Crowley? Dr. Phil… heh.
“No, Garth, not me the FBI, the real FBI! How are you still alive?” – Bobby
Sweetondean,
You nailed it again! The best Winchester hug of all times. When Cas shows his wings to Dean was amazing! Lets not forget the intro of Ruby 2.0, which is my fav Ruby.
LOVE this epi
