The WFB Admins’ Top 15 “Supernatural” Episodes List: #4
Alice’s #4:
No Rest For The Wicked
Why?: Two episodes in the history of “Superntural” were so intense that my stomach was tied up in knots for weeks afterward, and I still feel a bit faint when thinking about it. One of those episodes is in my top three. The other is “No Rest For The Wicked.”
This episode was an angst filled nail biter from the word go! Considering I started watching the show live in mid season three, this was my first live season ender. The first ep where I had to wait the whole agonizing summer to see how everything played out. Agony is the correct term. I don’t remember a more summer fraught with worr.
For those that remember, we were a little spoiled with out outcomes at the time. There’s no way Kripke will kill off one of his leads. Sure, he did that with Sam the season before, but Dean had him back in no time when was a nice setup for season three. They would find a way out of this. Sam and Dean, and even Bobby would find a wickedly awesome way to get Dean out of this mess at the zero hour.
Oh yeah, I believed that all the way until DEAN WAS VICIOUSLY MAULED TO DEATH BY HELLHOUNDS!!! KRIPKE WENT THERE! Sam had to watch every second of it. Then Lilith went to finish off Sam and…he’s immune to her white death ray?? Holy crap! So Sam survives, but is now left with the brutal sight of his brother’s bloody and semi eviscerated corpse on the floor. He cries. I cry. We all cry. The within ten seconds we’re screaming our fool heads off. Dean is dangling from meat hooks in Hell!!! He’s desperately calling out for Sam!!
Oh, but it wasn’t just the ill fated outcome. Ruby brought up the possibility that Sam could start using his powers, which was the ideal setup for season four. But Bobby, he just killed me. He was determined to save Dean too, and his “Family don’t end with blood” rant after Dean and Sam tried to leave without him is legendary. It’s another one of those show mantras that are often recalled by fans. Speaking of Bobby, how flipping brilliant is stopping a hoard of demons outside by putting holy water into the sprinkler system?
Plus, “Supernatural” spent a lot of season three ruining things, and with this episode sweet little girls could be added to the list. Heck, they ended up topping the list. Lilith is one sick bitch, isn’t she? Gotta give that girl tons of credit for pushing the creep factor off the scale. I’ll never look at a blonde haired little girl in a white dress the same way again.
Favorite Quote: So many great nuggets! From a dialogue perspective, this is one of the best for Eric Kripke as a writer. I’d go with “Family Don’t End With Blood” but I already said that, so I have to pick something else (those are the rules!). So, do I go for something badass, funny, or weepy. Oh, let’s go for weepy. After all, it was Dean’s last day of earth. The clock is very close to midnight…
Favorite scene: You know which one it is. It’s everyone’s favorite. In pursuit of Lilith, Sam wants to talk in the Impala about what happens if thing don’t go their way. Dean won’t have it. “No, you’re not gonna bust out the misty good-bye speech, okay? And if this is my last day on earth, I do not want it to be socially awkward.” So he puts on a tune instead. “Wanted Dead or Alive?” Even Sam questions the choice, considering Bon Jovi hasn’t earned a lot of street cred with the classic rock die hards. Dean reminds him that in this case, it’s alright. “Bon Jovi rocks, on occasion.”
THIS is the greatest brotherly bonding moment EVER! Both of them start singing along to the song, loud and rather badly. They smile, they shout at the top of their lungs, and as Sam does a vocal at the ending repeat of “Dead or Alive!” that’s comparable to the strangling a cat, Dean’s smile suddenly fades. The reality hits him. He’s dying and going to Hell tonight. Talk about putting up a brave front for your baby brother.

Awesome choices.
There´s nothing to be said about those.
All three of them are just brilliant.
Though you named my own personal number one and two (On the head of a Pin and Lazarus Rising) on four… I can live with that.
When you are that high up… it doesn´t really matter anymore, if you think, they are brilliant, or just the most brilliantest ever :-*
On the Head of a Pin always gets a pass.
Because Christopher Heyerdahl, because of THAT scene.
It might not be politically correct to name a torture scene your third favorite scene on Supernatural ever, but… CHRIST!
It was absolutely perfect, spot on acting.
And watching Alistair completely deconstruct Dean, while being tortured by him, was brilliantly painful and told us all, we needed to know about Dean´s time in Hell.
Btw, the other two scenes are: Castiel´s Entrance in Lazarus Rising and Bobby seeing Dean again in Lazarus Rising. Because: totally badass and absolutely funny, while heartbreakingly emotional
Some of my Favorites!!!!! All of these were so angsty and wonderful! Great picks
This is like last minute at the Oscars! I can’t wait to find out what your first choices are.
”Bon Jovi rocks, on occasion.”
I love that you chose that line, I use that one all the time, because I don’t love Bon Jovi, but hey, sometimes they actually rock pretty good. 😆
Love all these episodes, and No Rest for the Wicked is also on my top 15. Such great write ups by all of you. And OMG Sweetondean – I never saw that deleted scene! That is hysterical! Is that on the DVD?
Hi Grace, yes it’s a deleted scene. If you don’t have it, visit my YouTube channel (it’s sweetondean) because I have it on there. 🙂
Thanks very much Sweetondean. Watched it from your page. Classic Dean. And I love Castiel’s stare when Dean said that! Can’t imagine Misha did not struggle with that.
You guys are killing me!!! These are all my number ones time and again.
And Alice, I too had to suffer through the hellatus for the first time after Dean went to hell. Never had I wanted summer to pass so quickly! Never thought Dean would actually go to hell. It just about killed me, thinking of that all the friggin’ summer! 😥
And Lazarus Rising is right up there too. Both Kripke and Kim masterpieces! Every time I rewatch them I think about the long long summer when I kept feeling “Dean Dean Dean! sob sob!” and how nice it is to be able to pop the next dvd in immediately for instant relief. 😛
On the Head of a Pin is a masterpiece of its own. Writing and acting by all exceptional. Heart ripping sadness, only relieved by the next episode. My heart was in my gut when that episode finished with “I’m not the man either of our fathers wanted me to be!” Baaaaawwwwlllll !!! :sigh:
First things first, I must go watch that deleted scene…
…and I’m back. Awesome. Thanks for that! Wow, you guys have some powerful episodes at #4. On one hand, I’m kicking myself that “On the Head of a Pin” isn’t in my top 15! It’s a crime, because it’s one of my favorites, for all the reasons you give. But then I look at my list and there’s not any one I’m willing to take off, even if I could… so I guess 15 just isn’t enough for ALL my favorites.
At #4 on my list is “Weekend at Bobby’s”. Loved seeing the world from Bobby’s perspective, and all the work he puts into research and helping out other hunters. Plus I’ve always wondered what happens if a monster gets chopped into pieces without the proper formalities. Enter woodchipper! Also, how great were the back and forth impressions between Bobby and Crowley? Dr. Phil… heh.
“No, Garth, not me the FBI, the real FBI! How are you still alive?” – Bobby
Sweetondean,
You nailed it again! The best Winchester hug of all times. When Cas shows his wings to Dean was amazing! Lets not forget the intro of Ruby 2.0, which is my fav Ruby.
LOVE this epi
