The Best Deleted Scenes
Season Four
Yes, I was rather sad to find there were no season three deleted scenes shared. Imagine if there were more Dean deaths in “Mystery Spot!” Luckily, that meant multiple gems for season four.
In the Beginning
This scene was cut down and given how loaded “In The Beginning†was, I can see why. We had enough indication that Samuel didn’t approve of Mary’s relationship with John, so the time needed to show her climbing down the trellis wasn’t needed. However, I’m curious as to why they didn’t show Mary telling John she hated the Impala. Maybe it wasn’t said right, maybe fans would make too much of it. Granted the edit with Dean marveling over his mother instead of her saying those words was smoother, so instead we get a bonus extended scene.
Heaven and Hell
I wish they hadn’t cut this scene, which was the second deleted scene for “Heaven and Hell.†This was a shaky enough episode. The dialogue here is okay, but the interactions between Castiel and Uriel is great. Misha Collins and Robert Wisdom really know how to sell a scene. Sure, it gives away the punchline that Uriel issued the ultimatum to Dean that it was either Anna’s life of Sam’s, a reveal I liked coming later in the episode, but if anything this scene provides an early clue, earlier than “Lucifer Rising†anyway, that Heaven was interested in Ruby’s role with Sam. Also that Sam was off limits. I would have found that development really interesting.
I also really like how the scene shows Castiel’s authority over hot tempered Uriel. I think that would have been a nice compliment to the role reversal in “On The Head Of A Pin.†Ah well, at least we have this scene to insert somewhere when re-watching season four.
The Rapture
This is and the next one are my favorites of all the deleted scenes. Yeah, does this one shock any of you? I’m all about the Sammy angst. In this case, he’s detoxing big time from the demon blood because Ruby has cut off his supply and he did all that nasty bleeding the episode before. Dean wakes him up and he’s having trouble, as in a nasty head rush and dizziness trouble. Again, not sure why they cut this other than going directly from Dean waking up to the discovery of Jimmy made for a cleaner edit. It would have been indication right off the bat that Sam was really off physically and great continuity from “Jump The Shark.†Would’ve, could’ve, should’ve, didn’t. I know. Ah well, at least we got the deleted part.
Lucifer Rising
I suspect they cut this because they needed to amp up the tension of the closing sequences and probably time, but it’s so freaking cool! Passing at the chance to show Castiel telling Chuck his rationale for helping Dean was a big missed opportunity, especially since it’s been hinted now that Chuck is God. “What the Hell?†No wonder he’s running Heaven now! Castiel got the answer right. Granted it changes the meaning of Chuck touching Castiel’s shoulder, but I actually like this alternate reason better.
I love the deleted scenes, it is one of the first things I check out when I get the DVD set. I was rather disappointed when I got the Season 3 set and poof… no deleted scenes.
I also think the scene with Dean looking at his watch in The Pilot, may have gotten cut in part also because if you watch when the Impala turns around to go back to Sam and Jessica’s, you can see Sam in the passenger seat. Maybe lots of people wouldn’t have noticed it, but I have this crazy thing that my late husband and I use to do. We used to see who could spot inconsistencies in tv shows and movies. The one who could spot the most, could ask for a special favor. ;-), Okay I admit my special favor most of the time was him doing the laundry for the week. 😀 And sometimes old habits die hard. But I digress, again, as usual.
Thanks Alice, your list is great as usual. I did really love the Chuck montage of one liners. Made me giggle. Out of the extras on the DVD’s, deleted scenes rank #2 for me. The Gag Reel is always #1.
Thanks for this interesting article. 🙂 I’ve always thought that the deleted scenes for the past seasons (I have not seen the DVD for Season 5 yet) provided some interesting insight.
This was fun, Alice!
I always check out the deleted scenes and put them into the episode within my head. It often paints a bigger picture, though some are, as you point out above, quite unnecessary. I hope there are some on the dvds of the fifth season, too. And on the upcoming ones….
THanks a lot, Jas
Hi Alice
I too love the deleted scene and as with Jasminka, I like to invision them into the episode.
What…only two mentions of Sam and Dean’s airport scene? That one has stuck in my mind forever.
Loved the article, Alice.
Hi, Alice,
I’m late to this party but I hadn’t seen that portion of the DVDs yet so I didn’t want to be spoiled! (Huh, so there’s my will power on spoilers, wondered where it got to!)
Anywho, I do enjoy these deleted scenes, next to the gag reel they’re my next stop when I get the DVDs. Actually a bit bummed that all there is this year is for episode 9, would have hoped for some more. On the other hand, the snippets that we get with Bobby’s voiceover are pretty fun and I enjoy ‘prowling’ through his house.
Only one more week until Season 6 comes…way cool
I’m also late to the party because took me extra time to rip the plastic off my S5 DVD set and watch the special features.
I have to say I was disappointed that “the” cut Sam scene from FTBYAM wasn’t on the DVD. This is the only time I’ve known before DVD came out that a specific scene was cut .. and I was looking to see on DVD.
in the bluray of season 6 theres a easter egg of a deleted scene in the western ep but thats it season7 will have deleted scene so I was told. the season 5 had not a damn thing on the dvd and I am pissed the sex part with sam and that girl well not good for the story but damn it I wanted to see it they got something on youtube but I want more.
