The Best Deleted Scenes
Deleted scenes. Often times when we see these on the DVD sets, we can figure out why they were deleted. Either they were too long and needed to be shortened up a bit for time sake or they were just useless. In going through these scenes on the seasons one through five DVD sets, there were a few that were worthwhile. Below season by season (except for three which had none) are my personal favorites.

Season One
Pilot
There were a few deleted scenes from the pilot, but considering how long that ran I can see why they couldn’t do everything. Take the first deleted scenes, where the zombie friend is chastising Sam for not dressing up for Halloween. From the titles this looks like it was the original opening scene. It’s a good scene, but I like the one they ended up using better. If anything it could have been a good scene to follow the opener, but for the sake of time it had to go. Fun to see it here though.
So, you ever wonder why Dean came back for Sam after dropping him off at his apartment? How he was able to arrive just in the nick of time to save Sam from the fire? In the deleted scenes, we find out! Dean turned back to get Sam because his watch stopped. We all know now that clear cut sign is static on the radio but hey, it’s a pilot. I see why they cut this though. It took away from the suspense of Sam finding Jess on the ceiling.
For the last deleted scene this is just a commentary more than anything, but I’m rather glad this original ending got cut. Kripke actually had them driving away to “Rock and Roll Coochie Coo?†After Jess burned on the ceiling? I’m assuming someone cuffed him on the back of the head before cutting that part of the scene. Where was that person when the final edit of “Bugs†was done?
Phantom Traveler
I asked people on Twitter what their favorite deleted scene was and this one turned out to get the most mentions (both times). The Impala comes racing into a parking lot and Dean doesn’t even take time to pull in straight. He hops out of the car, walks quickly but Sam stops him. They’re at an airport. Guns won’t go over so well. Dean puts his gun in the trunk and complains. “I feel naked.†Hey Dean, you guys were impersonating Homeland Security earlier. You should know the drill!
Faith
Originally, it was scripted to show the back and forth between Dean being healed and Marshall being taken by the reaper. It’s not a bad scene actually. However, I can see why they cut it, for the reveal of the reaper trading souls worked later during the most awesome “Don’t Fear The Reaper†montage. This back and forth is a bit clunky too and takes away from Dean’s drama. This does make ideal bonus material though!
I love the deleted scenes, it is one of the first things I check out when I get the DVD set. I was rather disappointed when I got the Season 3 set and poof… no deleted scenes.
I also think the scene with Dean looking at his watch in The Pilot, may have gotten cut in part also because if you watch when the Impala turns around to go back to Sam and Jessica’s, you can see Sam in the passenger seat. Maybe lots of people wouldn’t have noticed it, but I have this crazy thing that my late husband and I use to do. We used to see who could spot inconsistencies in tv shows and movies. The one who could spot the most, could ask for a special favor. ;-), Okay I admit my special favor most of the time was him doing the laundry for the week. 😀 And sometimes old habits die hard. But I digress, again, as usual.
Thanks Alice, your list is great as usual. I did really love the Chuck montage of one liners. Made me giggle. Out of the extras on the DVD’s, deleted scenes rank #2 for me. The Gag Reel is always #1.
Thanks for this interesting article. 🙂 I’ve always thought that the deleted scenes for the past seasons (I have not seen the DVD for Season 5 yet) provided some interesting insight.
This was fun, Alice!
I always check out the deleted scenes and put them into the episode within my head. It often paints a bigger picture, though some are, as you point out above, quite unnecessary. I hope there are some on the dvds of the fifth season, too. And on the upcoming ones….
THanks a lot, Jas
Hi Alice
I too love the deleted scene and as with Jasminka, I like to invision them into the episode.
What…only two mentions of Sam and Dean’s airport scene? That one has stuck in my mind forever.
Loved the article, Alice.
Hi, Alice,
I’m late to this party but I hadn’t seen that portion of the DVDs yet so I didn’t want to be spoiled! (Huh, so there’s my will power on spoilers, wondered where it got to!)
Anywho, I do enjoy these deleted scenes, next to the gag reel they’re my next stop when I get the DVDs. Actually a bit bummed that all there is this year is for episode 9, would have hoped for some more. On the other hand, the snippets that we get with Bobby’s voiceover are pretty fun and I enjoy ‘prowling’ through his house.
Only one more week until Season 6 comes…way cool
I’m also late to the party because took me extra time to rip the plastic off my S5 DVD set and watch the special features.
I have to say I was disappointed that “the” cut Sam scene from FTBYAM wasn’t on the DVD. This is the only time I’ve known before DVD came out that a specific scene was cut .. and I was looking to see on DVD.
in the bluray of season 6 theres a easter egg of a deleted scene in the western ep but thats it season7 will have deleted scene so I was told. the season 5 had not a damn thing on the dvd and I am pissed the sex part with sam and that girl well not good for the story but damn it I wanted to see it they got something on youtube but I want more.
