“Fallen Idols” – Tell Us What You Think
It’s episode day! Tonight, a nice light episode. At least I hope so. Anymore weepy scenes and I’m going to need a rubber room. Considering the one scene I saw last night from a Space TV (Canada) preview, we should be laughing.
Yes, its Paris Hilton. Yes, she’s overexposed and a horrible actress. The point is though she’s not to be taken seriously here. She even agreed to the role because she loves the show and doesn’t want to be taken seriously. It’s tongue and cheek fun, so lets not overanalyze her role in all this. Enjoy, and share your reactions at the end. Happy episode!
The brotherly moments. How wonderful–they’re back together, not just physically, but emotionally. Just like it should be.
I was surprised PH didn’t suck (the life out of the screen) that much.
The SOON montage … are they trapped on a game show? LOL
B+ for the episode. 🙂
Light, not too heavy, but the brothers still have issues. More importantly, they’re working them out.
I love the “House of Wax” line and how Sam got off on chopping Paris Hilton’s head off. I enjoyed seeing something light for a change. Next week’s (the one with the child) looks intense!
They’re trapped in TV shows? Sam as David Caruso? The Impala as Kitt? Sam and Dean as doctors (Grey’s Anatomy maybe?) Perfect!
Gonna rewatch again. I’m sure I’ll pick up on something new. I always do!
I’m also pissed. Three weeks in a row my local station is having trouble with the episode in HD? No wide screen the entire episode this time. What’s up Channel 53?
I though that this week’s episode was a great way to lighten up the big bomb that dropped when it was announced that Sam is Lucifer’s vessel, and the possibility that if Dean and Sam lose the angles leave and demons take over in a end of the world 28 days later type of ordeal. What was even more exciting was the explosion of clips of future episodes, totally convinces me that they are totally gonna rock this season something fierce. 😆
The episode was the very first SPN episode that I haven’t liked. The brotherly moments were priceless though. They spoke things aloud that we have been waiting months (and even years) to hear! Now I know what Kripke meant when he said that the boys would be back different but stronger. I think that in a way this mediocre episode was the best vehicle to deliver not only the new and improved Winchester Brothers, but those AMAZING future episode scenes. Is anyone else drooling in anticipation of the McJensen and McJared scenes? 😮
I really, really love this show but tonight? Oh crap! Very disappointing.Just not a good episode. Paris was ok – making fun of herself was not too bad.
All of the ‘funny’ lines were terrible – what happened to the witty, slick pop-culture jokes? “I”m Batman” – like that. Dean with ‘I’m a Penthouse forum guy myself – big wink’ – ughh! Poor Jensen.
Even the ‘soon’ – dropped into a bad TV shows – we’re talking seriously close to jumping the shark for real.
The brotherly talk? Gee, Dean apologized again (several times, I think, tonight.) Perhaps Sam could stop whining and apologize for smashing Dean’s face into a mirror and trying to strangle him!
Too bad – this season was starting out so well.
I didn’t mind this episode. A co-worker mentioned to me just last week she’d like to see a return to the MOTW formula and I think this was just what that was.
The SOON was great and an unexpected treat!
I hate to be a party-poop, but I wasn’t impressed…..I will have to watch it again, but for me it was a let down. I hoped for more.
Kripke has Dean apologizing last week, and has him acting like a complete jackass this week. And when did he decide Sam should be Dean’s flunky? And are we to assume Dean has been asking like this for the last 3 weeks? Really, if I had been Sam, I would just have left. Maybe Zach brought the 2014 Dean back. 😀
Good scene with Little Bastard. Boys looked really nice in their shirts and ties. Loved Dean being ‘scared’ He does that so well! It’s good that Kripke finally had Dean acknowledge both boys’ part in this, and yes, it was good Sam killed Lilith. Wouldn’t want her running around in s5! 👿
Glad Dean FINALLY realized he really hadn’t been the big brother last season that Sam had needed, and to hear Sam did know about Dean’s breaking the first seal. I don’t think we ever saw them talk about that before. I missed the demon blood comment. Hope that showed Sam told Dean he really wasn’t addicted. That’s something Dean should really know.
Side note: I think Sam’s chopping was over done….after all he wasn’t chopping a 150 year old oak tree… not to mention they were STANDING while unconscious. Nit-picky issues I know, and I’m sure it was best for filming.
Sorry…this episode just didn’t do much for me.
Okay, when Paris was walking towards the axe talking about BDW, part of me was getting excited wondering if we were going to get a surprise guest apperance from JDM. How awesome would that have been?! I think I want JDM back so bad I’m willing to be delusional.
I loved this episode. Sam and Dean were both so awesome talking about their past mistakes. That’s what I love about this show. No need for false drama. They can be mature and still have good story lines.
That’s my Sam! Tanto amor por este niño.
Also loved the “Soon” clips set to..was that Stevie Wonder? Got me all pumped up for what’s to come.
I still wish the show would back off on the extreme desaturation of color. Ah well.
I think this is the first episode ever that ended and I had a stupid grin on my face that wouldn’t go away. Just thinking of Sam driving because Dean gave him the keys…..makes me smile and feel giddy.
This show marks the first time Sam stood up for himself AND got through to Dean without a shouting match or extreme emotional swing.
Sam has likely not trusted his own judgment for a very long time. For the longest time, no matter how good his argument he always would give in to Dean’s rationale. Which totally makes sense given how they grew up and the fact that their relationship really was a parent/child one on many levels.
Sam finally proposed a solution to their conflict that Dean could agree with and didn’t have a smart ass joke for. He has to let his “little” brother grow up. Actually, up until this point hasn’t Dean had some attempt at a joke after ever serious conversation like this? Either Dean was trying to hide his discomfort (be it fear or that he was not ready to hear what was being said) at the topic of conversation? I think Sam admitting he went with Ruby to get away from Dean was one, if not “the” most shocking things either of the boys has ever said to each other.
I enjoyed this episode. Dean geeking out over Lil’ Bastard, Gandhi kicking Sam’s butt, the House of Wax crack, Dean getting his butt kicked by Paris Hilton and man, oh man would I have loved JDM to have made an appearance as Pagan god in a papa Winchester suit. Maybe some other time.
Sigh – the brothers are back together.
What was missing for me was any chill from the monster of the week. I got a faint frisson from Dean under the car (and were those creaks the monster playing tricks or what?), but otherwise I thought the episode was just going through the motions on the scary stuff. Even Bugs and Family Remains both had more in the way of genuine scares along the way to their less than satisfactory resolutions. It’s interesting, because I wouldn’t have said I watched for the chills, but now I find I miss them when they’re not there at all – maybe the scares heighten my reactions to everything else that’s going on in the big story arcs?
The brother stuff was good, and a necessary clearing of the decks, but it did rather go over old ground. The only new information for the viewers I recall (from one viewing) is the confirmation that Dean had told Sam about breaking the first seal. Stand-out Sam/Dean moments in other episodes have provided new information for the viewer as well as an emotional charge between the brothers, which may be why for me these scenes lacked some of the powerful effect of previous brotherly showdowns.
The rather basic MOTW and lack of new info between the brothers, plus no Bobby or Castiel, presumably explains the short run time for the episode and the need for the “Soon” at the end.
For me, the episode Sympathy for the Devil improved enormously on rewatching – knowing the story helped me follow the pacing a lot better and get more nuance out of character and story lines, and it’s turning into a favourite. I’ll rewatch this one to see if I get more out of it, but my first impression is that there wasn’t enough substance to it for me to be as enthused at the idea of rewatching as I have been for the other episodes so far this season. Never mind though, there’s next week to look forward to!
I can feel that I cannot judge the chill and Supernatural’s ability to scare objectively these days. Something IS only scary when you see it for the first couple of times, getting the same formula repeated a dozen times and the scare-me-nerve go numb. Which with this show is not really a problem since the series moved on to new story arcs beside the MOTW. This epsiode was ok, I am not thrilled but hey we got three amazing episodes in a row now, it’s hard not to get spoiled :-). And I always enjoy the fact that they are self-critical, as Faellie pointed out; they needed that SOON in the end. Looking forward to next week :-)!
Mixed feelings about this one … It’s always harder for me to get pulled in to a MOTW story, but we’ve had some really great ones…Not so much last night. Know it’s nitpicky, but I thought some of the plot elements were a stretch. For example, fun as it was to see Sam performing an amateur autopsy, I didn’t buy that he just happened to think to cut into the stomach and just happened to find those seeds … Also, I think Dean’s skirtchasing ways are usually played for better humor than they were last night. Some good lines but definitely some weak ones (Dean’s top hat bit comes to mind…) Appreciate the satirical take on celebrity worship, but I was hoping for a stronger episode tonight.
On the positive side, I too adored the brotherly moments, and the way our guys sorted out some of their issues. They’d have made a therapist proud. They’re still appropriately awkward and hesitant–pitch perfect. And being an Ohio girl I’m always happy when EK gives a nod to the home state, even if Canton is populated by bumbling cops, out-to-lunch wax sculptors and Paris Hilton fans ;-). More fun moments: An APB out on Paris, Dean’s fear and reverence of the Porsche, cracks on Gandhi to rile Sam, Sam the Gandhi fan attacked by the sage and pacifist Mahatma…irreverent and funny. Loved the “House of Wax” line, so cute. I was also inordinately excited to see Dean’s very own laptop…NO IDEA why I get a kick out of this, but I do. He needs to put some Zeppelin stickers on it. (Sigh) i’ve lost my mind…
Speaking of Ohio, c’mon Kripke, what’s wrong with Cleveland? Don’t answer that, we could often pass for pre-apocalypse. All those empty warehouses.
As usual, everyone covered my likes/dislikes of the episode. Hilton was used exactly on screen the way I had hoped, very limited, completely in service to the story and going along with the meta-joke. Not that frightening of a MOTW – the slow pacing probably didn’t help, but I don’t mind that as much as most, I’m still wondering about the seeds, but my memory is faulty; perhaps he did some off-camera research pre-cadaver – but I too was glad to see Sam stand up for himself and have it not turn into a he said/he said deal. Both realize they need the other to survive what’s coming and, man, that Soon was fucking nuts. Crazy Japanese game show, sitcom, extra creepy kid, Get Off My Lawn Dean, good stuff. Given the House of Wax line, wouldn’t it have been cool to have a wax Vincent Price in there? Though violent Gandhi certainly worked.
I enjoyed it, it was a good ep.
The brother -bits were the best, wasn’t that keen on PH but it was ok (I hated the whole filing nails on the knife -thing). And Sam got to chop of PH’s head… And then he was all bloody, yuck 😀
Laughing when Dean called Ghandhi smurf *snort*
But the Soon -bit was just awesome! Sitcoms, doctorshows, gameshows, CSI (oh lord Jared was hilarious as Horatio, reminded me of a Jim Carrey impression of Caruso lol) and the Omen-boy, creepy. And old!Dean?!? That’ll be something allright 🙂
On the whole, this episode isn’t that wonderful. Despite that, there were many great moments that made the overall experience reasonably pleasant (again, reasonably) .
I loved the return to a MOTW ep, it was very refreshing. The brotherly bonding was great to see…the ‘training wheels’ where an incontestably intelligent idea on Dean’s part.
DEAN HAS HIS OWN LAPTOP. OMGWTFBBQ SQUEEEEEE!!! I have no idea why it makes me so happy to see the both of them with their own laptops.
And I completely get what Sam meant when he felt stronger when he got away from Dean. I feel the exact same way with my siblings. I love them to death, but at the same time I always feel like a bumbling fool around them. Sammy oh Sammy..I feel your pain!
It was great that Sam got his issues across to Dean with very little fuss and mess this time. The boys are really growing and dealing with their crap better. Also, Dean is the one now who opens up easily whereas Sam is a bit slower on the uptake when it comes to all the sharing stuff. And suddenly it’s Sam who’s spewing all the ‘kick ass first ask later’ thing.
And SAMMY DROVE!!! BUT WHY DIDN’T WE GET TO SEE HIM BEHIND THE WHEEL!!
Ghandi, and the Ghandi jokes. Sam in Medical Examiner mode. Dean and the fake Little Bastards. All kinds of squee! No comments on Paris.
I didn’t mind this episode. After all the intense and powerful drama in the first 4 episodes, it was nice to have a light-hearted one. Give my heart strings and brain cells a little break. I agree some scenes were a little over the top, but frankly I didn’t care.
I think the real focus of this episode was on the mending of the brother’s relationship.
Get them to work out their issues so they can find a common ground and start working as equal partners. The MOTW was just for background.
I really enjoyed the show last night. Phew! It was such a welcome relief not to have my stomach clenched up in a knot for a change. Got a little tense with Dean under the car, but loved the brothers back together on a real case like old times. Love all the angst and desperation but need a break at times. Like ATL was last season.
Didn’t mind Paris at all. Thought she was a hoot! And Woohoo for Sam going berserk and chopping off her head. That was very satisfying. LOL!
Just a little bitty niggle. Dean apologized again and I still haven’t heard Sam say “I’m so sorry for HURTING you Dean!” How long would it take to squeeze that little phrase in? I guess it was said off screen like when Dean told Sam he started the apocalypse. I’m glad he told him that. Now he should tell him about his trip to the future. He hasn’t, has he?
Wow! Those previews are really intriguing. They flew by so fast it was hard to grasp it all. Must watch it again.
Alice, last week SunTV showed the episode full screen but this week they went back to HD. Wonder what’s going on with them and your channel? Space always shows it in HD.
this was a great breather to the drama of the first 4 episodes. from a comedy view-point this ep wasnt as funny as i had hoped. although the dean/little bastard. and sam/dean/paris scenes were hillarious. I loved how dean was like ‘dont touch her dont even look at her she may get angry!’ from a drama view-point i was more then fullfilled.
I like how sam stood up for himself and made dean revaluate the situation. alot of fans have mentioned this alot-dean sees and treats sam like a little brother. and alot of last years events was sams (misguided) attempt to escape that shadow. I also liked how dean mentioned his part in breaking the first seal. not only does it keep those kooky sam/fans and dean/fans at bay but it will satisfy the fans who were upset that it wasnt mentioned.
and i loved the final scene with dean alowing sam to drive the impala-their first step to being on equel level. cause dean driving all the time and sam being in the passenger seat is a classic example of going by their learnt roles-older brother drives.
I’m still laughing so I think is fair to say that I liked this episode! 😀 I needed this after all the drama and angst from the previous episodes!
The best part? The boys working together again and dealing with their problems in a very adult way.
Two laptops? Yey! And like everyone else I don’t really know why I am so trill about it, but I am.
Sam on scrubs *sigh*
As for Paris Hilton don’t really have an opinion, she served the purpose of the MOTW.
And that soon? OMG! Know I understand the comment on supernatural.tv “Move over McSteamy, make way for McSexy!”,couldn’t agree more 😀
Next’s weeks episodes look like they gonna be awesome! Can’t wait!
It was really good to have a light episode like this. Outside a few minor things I really liked it. It was funny, lighthearted and it had me giggling the whole time.
After the more angsty episodes I always have the strange urge to clean something. So far this season I have reorganised my linnen closet, sorted my towels by color, polished all the copper I could find (and I live in a very old house so that is quite a lot), reorganised my computer, washed the curtains and a whole lot more. This week all I did was water the plants. Giggling.
Dean was a little blunt in this episode though. Jensen pulled it of nicely as usual, but it seemed a little off. Blaming Sam for the apocalypse and actually saying it to Bobby seemed really out of character.
Also, standing up while uncontious? That was just plain weird. And pagan Gods apparently don’t know the first thing about tying people up.
The soon bit was awesome! IMDB gives an enormous spoiler as to what is going on. Don’t click it if you don’t want to know!

Funny thing – I see a lot of disappointment, but I’m very happy with the episode. Slower kind of episode, lighter kind of episode, not too funny but rather easygoing – that’s fine by me. Not _great_, but fine.
BUT finally those 2 guys talk – with WORDS, really talk! Who could have believed that?
You waited for more? I’ve been waiting this treat for nearly 1,5 years now, actually gave up the hope – and now, miracle! They can talk! Like sensible people! Hurray!
Plus – I love gods as MOTW. They could give me a god every week and it wouldn’t get boring in whole season.
Second plus – those wax persons standing there were quite scary for me.
Hi everyone!
After watching this weeks episode I don’t really know what to feel. There’s a mix of various emotions, and I am genuinely surprised by it… as if that was a sensation completely new to me. It is not. As a matter of fact it is a very familiar response to a Supernatural episode. This show strikes so many chords in my soul. I am aware of that fact, and yet it still amazes me every time.
One part of me was relieved to be allowed to breathe and laugh, since I kind of still feel the weight of last week’s episode… Dean speaking to Little Bastard was adorable, and I was cracking up over Dean going on about Gandhi being a ‘fruitarian’, even though Gandhi is one of those historical personalities I highly admire. I didn’t find that offensive at all (which someone I know did)… Plus the in-jokes about House of Wax…
And I actually think that Paris Hilton did a fine job. She was quite scary as this God’s incarnation, and after being accustomed to her rather high pitched voice (which I always found annoying, truth be told) her much deeper, more grounded voice took me by surprise, and I liked it. I have never been and in all likelihood never will be a fan of hers, but she didn’t do any harm to the show, as some people seemed to fear. Her decapitation by Sam was spectacular, gory and fun.
And I was happy to see Paul McGillion guest starring. I would have loved to see more of him.
Another part of me was complaining over her bleeding heart, to put it in a corny way. The distinct tension between our favourite brothers made this episode hard to watch. It moved me how Dean, in a desperate attempt perhaps (he surely has still Lucifer/Sam’s words ringing in his ears), tried to start anew. Trying to pretend that they could just go on, research and work a case like they used to do many months back when the borders between good and evil were still somewhat clearer than they are today. It didn’t work, of course.
It’s still there: their history of doubt, pain, wounded trust, of feeling guilty, of being let down by the other
… which is a subjective point of view, naturally: both, Sam and Dean, tried to do their best in order to not let the other down, to protect the other, because they have never stopped to care for each other. Sam did his demon-blood-thing, Dean swore allegiance to the angels. Sam walked out on Dean, Dean bid him to never come back. In the end of the last season a lot of glass had been shattered, yet we never found real malice in their relationship. They had gone too far on their separate paths, but they still tried to save one another. It didn’t go as planned, though.
They are trying to make amends, and the way they proceed is kind of organic. After what they’ve been though and said to each other it does not work by ignoring the obvious wounds. That’s how kids do it: ‘If I can’t see it, it cannot see me either’.
Well, the brothers have grown up. They have already been adults, of course, being forced to grow up faster than most other children because of what they knew about ‘what’s out there’.
And now they’ve grown up in their relationship. They meet at eye level now.
I can imagine it must be difficult for Dean to let go of his baby brother and welcome his grown up brother, which means that his duty (taking care of Sam) changes. He needs to let go of how he sees himself, his self-image will alter. That is not an easy thing to accept, particularly since this image he had of himself was the core of his being: the protector of the family, of his brother. But Sam does not need protection like he might have in the past. The kind of care he needs is another, and Dean seems to be willing to accept that. What a gutsy move.
Both have their share in the on-bringing of the apocalypse, and both punish themselves for it, probably in ways we will never hear of, but as we know the Winchesters, it is not hard to imagine how much they leash out against themselves.
Nathaniel Hawthorne once wrote: ‘What other dungeon is so dark as one’s own heart! What jailer so inexorable as one’s self?’
I think that is some kind of universal truth. I can only assume that there are horrific nightmares haunting them because of that, or mean and degrading inner words they speak to themselves.
But healing starts with admitting and accepting. We are dealing with trauma survivors here.
Some wounds will probably never heal. But some will. It seems as if Sam and Dean are beginning to be more honest with each other again, starting with owning up to what they did and forgiving each other.
The more difficult step will be to forgive themselves. Dean needs to absolve himself for not being ‘the man either of our dads wanted me to be’, among other points. Sam needs to forgive himself for falling for Ruby’s spectacular lies and his hubris of believing that he had it all under control, again: among other things.
These guys have seen more than any human being should see or know. That kind of knowledge comes with a terrible price, doesn’t it? But somehow I trust their inner strength and their compassionate souls that they will be still standing in the end… to survive the apocalypse. Or do die in it. But they will go down fighting. Hopefully at each others’ sides.
Thank you, talented writers, directors and all folks of Supernatural involved for such well designed characters… What fun it is to follow their steps…
Be well and take care, all of you here, Jas
NUT CRACKER!!!! The Japanese game show along with the Horatio Caine thing at the end make me keep replaying that montage over and over.
As for the episode itself, my jaw dropped when I heard Dean admit to Sam something that I had been YELLING at the TV ever since Sam broke the last seal which is DEAN is just as much if not MORE at fault himself for breaking the 1st seal and STARTING all this crap!
Oh sweet, it’s the (edited for spoiler) that puts them through all the ‘Changing Channels’ stuff comming up in Ep8
What was the SOON’S clip song? I know its Superstition but is a diferent version and I dont know from who
i don’t want to be the whingy person – but some warning on the spoilers please :
Trying to go spolier free and it helps if there is some indication or warning so I and other spolierphobes can jump over it.
Thanks! 🙂
Also i apparently can’t spell spoiler either, whoops kept spelling it spolier – well that’s what you get i supposed for trying to sneakily write comments at work :
