Robin’s Rambles: Supernatural 9.18 – “Meta Fiction”
Several weeks ago, I had neck surgery that has been healing with maddening sloth. It’s been very hard to bring you my rambles because sitting at the computer is so hard and painful. I began writing up the episode, but found I just couldn’t do it. So I’m going to only present my questions for thought, with my apologies. I hope to bring you more next week.
1. How great was it to see Gabriel/Trickster again? I was thrilled to see him back. Even if he wasn’t real and just a character created by Metatron to trick Cas, I was delighted, especially through Casa Erotica.
2. Funny that Metatron sees Cas as the villain of the piece, huh? It’s all a matter of viewpoint, right? To the Winchesters and Cas, Metatron is the bad guy, with all the evil intentions. At least Abaddon’s intentions are obvious. What does Metatron want?
3. As Metatron played “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore,” Cas hung up the symbol that looked like an ice cream cone and walked out to claim his flock–and Metatron wrote exactly what was happening and said “God watched over them and smiled at His good work.” Does this mean Metatron considers himself God now?
4. Dean is watching himself in the mirror a lot, preoccupied with his face and the scar on his arm. It’s not good. Cas was upset to see it. He told Sam to watch over his brother. Let’s hope Sam does, no matter how much trash talking Gadreel did when he was held prisoner.
5. Speaking of which, why was Gadreel trying to goad Dean into killing him? Does he want to die? Because he seemed to be pushing Dean awfully hard into doing just that.
6. Metatron appears exceptionally powerful. He blew away the ring of fire, got rid of the brothers’ angel knives, and erased the devil’s trap on the inside of the Impala’s trunk. How are they going to get rid of/outsmart him? Maybe Crowley can help?
7. This was a pretty good episode, but it seemed very Sam and Dean light to me. I give it an 8. You?
8. Personally, I was hoping either Sam or Dean would kill Gadreel after what he did to Kevin. I was disappointed he got away. I hope he double-crosses Metatron.
I would say YES, Metatron thinks of himself as a god of sorts and YES Gadreel wants to die. He is sick and tired of being sick and tired. :p
So sorry to hear about your neck issues; hope you’re feeling better soon.
1. How great was it to see Gabriel/Trickster again? I was thrilled to see him back. Even if he wasn’t real and just a character created by Metatron to trick Cas, I was delighted, especially through Casa Erotica.
Was fun seeing Gabriel again; personally I don’t think he’s alive, Lucifer knew the “real” Gabriel when he killed him in S5 but hey, you never know.
2. Funny that Metatron sees Cas as the villain of the piece, huh? It’s all a matter of viewpoint, right? To the Winchesters and Cas, Metatron is the bad guy, with all the evil intentions. At least Abaddon’s intentions are obvious. What does Metatron want?
Metatron is batshit crazy; he wants to be God and create a heaven that matches his own expectations of what heaven should be.
Yep, he’s a megalomaniac.
4. Dean is watching himself in the mirror a lot, preoccupied with his face and the scar on his arm. It’s not good. Cas was upset to see it. He told Sam to watch over his brother. Let’s hope Sam does, no matter how much trash talking Gadreel did when he was held prisoner.
Yes, Dean’s self loathing season long pity party continues; looks like Sam is going to have to be the one to make the first step towards reconciliation.
5. Speaking of which, why was Gadreel trying to goad Dean into killing him? Does he want to die? Because he seemed to be pushing Dean awfully hard into doing just that.
Given that Gadreel spent most of eternity locked up in Heaven-jail, if faced with being locked up again or dying, he’d choose the latter.
6. Metatron appears exceptionally powerful. He blew away the ring of fire, got rid of the brothers’ angel knives, and erased the devil’s trap on the inside of the Impala’s trunk. How are they going to get rid of/outsmart him? Maybe Crowley can help?
Metatron knows all the tricks and thinks he’s smarter than everyone else. After all, he was the scribe of God. His hubris and arrogance will be his downfall.
7. This was a pretty good episode, but it seemed very Sam and Dean light to me. I give it an 8. You?
Probably give it an 8 as well; this is one of those episodes you need to watch a few times to let it all sink in.
8. Personally, I was hoping either Sam or Dean would kill Gadreel after what he did to Kevin. I was disappointed he got away. I hope he double-crosses Metatron.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Gadreel double crosses him; he was none too pleased when he was trapped by the Winchesters. However, it’s hard to find any redeemable qualities about Gadreel whatsoever, he’s leaving a wide path of destruction behind him; with all the angels and humans he is killing. He probably thinks him being captured was part of the story Metatron was telling.
double post sorry
Feel better, but it will take time–just my little finger took 6 to get back to normal.
1. YES IT WAS! I’ve debating who had a better ‘pop-up presence’ Bobby in “Taxi Driver” slugging Sam then realizing it really was Sam or Gabriel returning via Casa Erotica.
2. It always boils down to a person’s point of view. History is written by the winners after all. Metatron is so much of an egomaniac at the moment there’s really no guessing what he wants.
3. Probably.
4. Dean knows something dark is up, but he doesn’t know what it is or how to deal with it. You’re right it’s not good. I think he was just checking to see if his eyes had gone black like the fight he got into with himself in “Dream a Little Dream of Me.” Cas gave a glimpse of recognition he knows what it is, but I’m not sure if he knows what to do either. Luckily, Sam has dispensed with being mad and has moved on to concern and maybe anxiety over Dean’s worsening condition. Yay! It looks like little brother gets to make the power play for the other’s life/soul this time. I hate that Dean still thinks Sam wouldn’t save him when what Sam inarticulately said was “I won’t go against your wishes to save you.” In the end I think Dean will be happily surprised to find Sam by his side supporting him, and hopefully lay off treating his little brother like a mental patient, runaway teen, or a ‘snot nosed kid.’
5. Maybe Gadreel is starting to show remorse, but there was a definite pause after he talked to Metatron.
6. “That’s the $64 question.” Crowley having something to do with it is an interesting twist.
7. 8 from me, too.
8. I was disappointed Dean intervened so early from Sam getting some revenge, but kudos to Sam for being more concerned over how Dean was doing than pissed his older brother got more swings in on the traitor.
If Gadreel knows a door to heaven he might have an uneasy alliance with the Winchesters.
… and if there’s a door, there’s a lock… and if there’s a lock, there has to be a key 🙂 (sorry, flashbacks to the French Mistake)
😀
:
Nice one njspnfan! … Speaking of flashbacks I snickered when Metatron asked Cas if it’d kill him to read a book or watch a movie Cas frowned. I half expected him to say “A movie no, but a book, with the proper spell, could…,” like he told Meg last season. I miss Meg, season one Meg is a lot like Abbadon, huh? Never mind that we can only have one girl around at a time. 😉
Another thing Metatron said was that even with all those secrets in that bunker he couldn’t be defeated. He said that like he didn’t know what was in the bunker and maybe was a little worried about it. Abbadon was also eager to get into the bunker. I think the MOL bunker is more awesome than we know.
By the way there is an great little write up in the NYT about SPN with the guys.
My little thoughts to your questions. As I have said earlier I really liked the episode but it left me fear what is coming. I literally can’t sit still before I see where the season ends.
1. How great was it to see Gabriel/Trickster again? I was thrilled to see him back. Even if he wasn’t real and just a character created by Metatron to trick Cas, I was delighted, especially through Casa Erotica.
Loved it. Love the character and actor. Only noticed later or maybe I noticed during that the acting was slightly out of tune (intentionally as he was a fake). Even if it was a trick the hope is still up he might be alive.
2. Funny that Metatron sees Cas as the villain of the piece, huh? It’s all a matter of viewpoint, right? To the Winchesters and Cas, Metatron is the bad guy, with all the evil intentions. At least Abaddon’s intentions are obvious. What does Metatron want?
To make his own story I guess or worse. All are ganging up against Team Free Will.
He totally thinks so. I have also been thinking between Cass doing it because he decided it/Because Metatron was writing it. I was expecting Cass to clubber Dean about the MoC so it would make more sense that he couldn’t in a way…
4. Dean is watching himself in the mirror a lot, preoccupied with his face and the scar on his arm. It’s not good. Cas was upset to see it. He told Sam to watch over his brother. Let’s hope Sam does, no matter how much trash talking Gadreel did when he was held prisonerr.
He is and he is becoming more violent. I think the beating up Gadreel wasn’t shown as it would have been too brutal/There wasn’t time on it as the episode was over packed already. But my bet is the brutal part. The rage he would show when doing it. Also, in the end Cass said “Keep on eye on him Sam”. It might not be meant like watching over him. It sounded more like others have said that Sam might need to stop Dean (Or keep himself also safe) It didn’t sound good what ever he meant by it.
We might get flashbacks from it maybe? But it was already very well played how it was now. Dean exhausted.
5. Speaking of which, why was Gadreel trying to goad Dean into killing him? Does he want to die? Because he seemed to be pushing Dean awfully hard into doing just that.
I think he didn’t want to be shackled for eternity again and I hope he continues living and not get wasted by the brothers. He is an interesting character. In a way I think him as Sam’s angel as Dean has Cass. Even though Sam hates his guts at the moment. Still hope there is a way to keep him in Supernatural. The way they portrayed him in this episode. There is just something about him. He is like Cass in earlier days and Cass has also done pretty bad things.
6. Metatron appears exceptionally powerful. He blew away the ring of fire, got rid of the brothers’ angel knives, and erased the devil’s trap on the inside of the Impala’s trunk. How are they going to get rid of/outsmart him? Maybe Crowley can help?
Crowley, Gadreel, MoC + something else. We will see.
7. This was a pretty good episode, but it seemed very Sam and Dean light to me. I give it an 8. You?
It had less the brothers and more Cass that makes me fear how he will end up… You know in the series/movies if they show character more or they have those happy moments. The smile when talking to Dean? Bad guy screwing him up like that? I hope it doesn’t end where I feel it goes. And who does it. I hope I am mistaken though. It would be awesome if Cass chooses after all his real family. To be a hunter. To be their “Bobby” in the bunker searching stuff for the boys when they are out on the road and popping in if needed. It would be awesome to have Cass “On the ground”.
I give the episode 9,5… Because I can’t give 10. Not yet. Will save it for later. 😉
8. Personally, I was hoping either Sam or Dean would kill Gadreel after what he did to Kevin. I was disappointed he got away. I hope he double-crosses Metatron.
Me too + some way he would live to see another day. I do hope he don’t end up like Magnus. He is getting more interesting the more episodes he is in and well… We know what happened to Magnus.
Hi Robin
I hope things get better for you.
1. How great was it to see Gabriel/Trickster again? I was thrilled to see him back. Even if he wasn’t real and just a character created by Metatron to trick Cas, I was delighted, especially through Casa Erotica.
I was so excited to see him. I’ve always loved the Trickster/Gabriel. I will always be bitter with them killing him and Bobby off. Just as they showed him standing behind Cas, the station that was showing the episode went down due to technical difficulties. It stayed down for the remainder of the episode. I was ready to have a mental breakdown. They bring back one of my favourite characters and I can’t watch it. Luckily I was able to watch it later on the internet. I stayed up later than I wanted but it was worth it.
2. Funny that Metatron sees Cas as the villain of the piece, huh? It’s all a matter of viewpoint, right? To the Winchesters and Cas, Metatron is the bad guy, with all the evil intentions. At least Abaddon’s intentions are obvious. What does Metatron want?
I believe Metatron wants to be God or a God. I guess he felt cheated having to hide after God ‘exited stage left’ (a snagglepuss reference for you young ones).
I do believe he does believe he is a God. I also believe that the reason he had Kevin killed was to gain the abilities of a prophet, since he seemed to be able to predict events happening. He reminded me of Chuck in Swan Song sitting behind the desk, typing and narrating his stance on writing to Cas.
4. Dean is watching himself in the mirror a lot, preoccupied with his face and the scar on his arm. It’s not good. Cas was upset to see it. He told Sam to watch over his brother. Let’s hope Sam does, no matter how much trash talking Gadreel did when he was held prisoner.
I believe Sam is already watching over Dean. Cas’s warning has only confirmed his own feelings
of concerns for his brother.
5. Speaking of which, why was Gadreel trying to goad Dean into killing him? Does he want to die? Because he seemed to be pushing Dean awfully hard into doing just that.
It does seem that Gadreel did want Dean to kill him. I actually feel he has regrets over his actions and for siding with Metatron. He seemed to only follow Metatron’s instructions to kill Kevin after he heard Dean’s plans to trap him so he could warn Sam. I guess self preservation had set in.
6. Metatron appears exceptionally powerful. He blew away the ring of fire, got rid of the brothers’ angel knives, and erased the devil’s trap on the inside of the Impala’s trunk. How are they going to get rid of/outsmart him? Maybe Crowley can help?
Crowley or maybe Death. How does one kill someone or something with those strengths and powers.
7. This was a pretty good episode, but it seemed very Sam and Dean light to me. I give it an 8. You?
I enjoyed it, I would give it 8 or 9.
8. Personally, I was hoping either Sam or Dean would kill Gadreel after what he did to Kevin. I was disappointed he got away. I hope he double-crosses Metatron.
I think they would have killed him if they did not have to trade him for Cas.
I am starting to believe Gadreel will end up double-crossing Metatron.
