Official Episode Synopsis: Supernatural 8.21 (Best Guest Director Ever!)
I am SOOOOO Excited about this! Not only is this the big kickoff of the exciting three episode ending mytharc for the season, it’s being directed by one of my all time favorite TV directors ever! I got to meet and interview Robert Duncan McNeill at Comic Con a few years ago in the Chuck press room (for which he was their primary director and co-producer), and ask him about directing the only other Supernatural episode he’d ever done, season one’s “Skin.” I am a MASSIVE fan of this man’s work. BTW, Robert Duncan McNeill was an actor before he became a TV director, playing Tom Paris in the series Star Trek: Voyager. Here’s a link to that report if you haven’t seen it:
And now, the synopsis. This is going to be great! I can’t think of a better writer/director pairing!
Episode 8.21 – “The Great Escapist”
FEELING LUCKY TONIGHT? — When Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) receive a distressing video message from Kevin Tran (guest star Osric Chau), they set about trying to uncover the Third Trial. The boys make a discovery that sends them to a casino in Colorado, to find a mysterious recluse (guest star Curtis Armstrong) who may be able to fill in the holes in Kevin’s research. Meanwhile, Crowley (guest star Mark Sheppard) is on a winning streak. Castiel (Misha Collins) tries to elude Naomi (guest star Amanda Tapping) and the angels hunting him.
Robert Duncan McNeill directed the episode written by Ben Edlund.
Welcome lurker! I believe you’re right. It’s pretty exciting I think.
Thanks for trying to use the spoiler tag. It doesn’t work right now, but I’m still trying to find a way to fix that. So keep up that habit! Luckily, this article is in our spoiler section, so comments are masked from the front page. You don’t have to use a spoiler tag in this thread.
I am so happy. I am a huge fan of Robert Duncan McNeill. Director most especially, but also as an actor. In fact, I love everyone involved in this episode! (Ben Edlund!! Yes!)
Rose bloom, yes that was him.
I’m not really familiar with this director. But so happy to see Edlund’s name. There’s no word on who is writing the last 2, right?
Spoiler!!!! Maybe….
Did anyone see that the girl who played Sarah in Provenance S1 tweeted a pic of herself on set? Do we think she might be coming back?
DEFINITE SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s confirmed she’s going to be in 8.22 (at least by zap-it). YAY! I really liked Sarah. She and Sam were cute together and she already knows about the supernatural so no secrets. I’m still not sure how a regular love interest would work on the show, but maybe a few episodes to set up for when the show ends would be fantastic. Of course all this could be coming from the heady not-Amelia fumes. 😀 But I thought she and Sam had a good set-up and she was pretty tough. It would be interesting to see how she reacts to this new version on Sam. Who still has amazing heart, but isn’t the innocent she met back in S1.
I’m not sure Robert Singer will be getting the finale this year. He’s directing episode 20. He doesn’t do too many in a season since he’s showrunner too. Also, I’m not exactly sure Jeremy Carver will be writing the finale this year. Yeah, it’s tradition, but he seems to be bucking traditions this year.
You mean supernaturalwiki.com? They are really the true authorities on supernatural and they have Andrew Dabb as the writer.
The way I see it, Andrew Dabb and Daniel Loflin are the ones left in the rotation. However, that’s not to say Adam Glass isn’t writing episode 22. I just haven’t heard that’s the case yet.
Updated – Supernaturalwiki has Jeremy Carver as the writer for episode 8.23.
The have Dabb for 8.22. Which is good, I guess. I loved both of his other solo ones this year. I was just hoping for an Edlund back to back since 8.21 only makes 3 for him this year-Slacker 😀 . Although honestly I’m just happy that he continues to remain on the show after 7 seasons and his stuff is still just as fabulous. (Aaron and the Golem were immediate favorites of mine.)
I’m also a little surprised he isn’t directing again. He did a terrific job both times, but maybe he is just too busy with other stuff.
