The WFB Admins’ Top 15 “Supernatural” Episodes List: #14
Alice’s #14:
“Clap Your Hands If You Believe”
Why: There’s a few reasons. For one, I’m a huge The X-Files fan. When “Supernatural” made their “no alien” policy known during “Tall Tales” I figured that was it. But there’s was Dean, being loaded into the mothership. I loved every single second of it!
The big reason though was I was in the press room at Comic Con when Eric Kripke showed up with a huge smile on his face, telling us that Ben Edlund just a few days before pitched fairies. He couldn’t wait to see how it all played out. It was hysterical! Even better than anyone ever dreamed in the room that day. Clever too that alien myths could be tied to fairies. The truth be told though, when Ben Edlund goes for complete absurdity on a grand scale, his genius take this show to heights where no other show dare to go.
I’m not a huge fan on the soulless Sam era, but I’m a huge fan of soulless Sam in this episode. Sam ended up dominating most of the crazy dialogue when usually in the comedy episodes he’s the straight man. After seeing what a heartless, horrible bastard he’s been the previous episodes, to see him in this light is just too wonderful. I’m still laughing over the fact that this guy can’t grasp the concept that he can’t have sex with a hot chick after his brother has gone missing. Sitting in the dark and feeling the loss was way beyond him!
Another great trademark of any Ben Edlund episode are the colorful characters that come with the story. Sam and Dean having tea with fairy lady just about trumps any absurdity Edlund did to that point (until “The French Mistake” came along).
Favorite Quote: Duh! Dean: “Fight the Fairies! Fight the Fairies!” But I could dismiss that as a technicality. After all, that’s more of a tagline or a rally cry. Yeah, that’s it. How about this?
Dean: Close encounter! Close encounter!
No, that’s dialogue too. Absolutely hysterical dialogue, so let’s see, a quote…
Sam: Hey, you’re the one who pizza-rolled Tinkerbell. I’m just doing the math.
Favorite Scene: Ugh, why do I do this to myself! It’s the entire episode! No, one actually does stand out for me, even though by the time this scene came along my sides were already hurting. This just about did me in.
Dean Winchester vs. Tinkerbell. Dean’s fought a lot of evil in his life, but none more gruesome than the determined little fairy who was going to get this gruff first born hunter back into their clutches. Watching Dean tussle with this bouncy ball of glowing light, all while David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” plays in the background (no doubt a budget buster for the show), just goes to show that anything is possible on “Supernatural.” I love how right at the build up of the song Dean looks into the glowing light with the derp face and is stunned by what he sees. “Nipples?”
The after scene of this is just as brilliant, when Dean tries to show Sam the remants of exploded fairy in his microwave (the ding! at the end being the perfect touch). The fairies theory is born, all while Sam and Dean sit in front of this giant mural in their hotel room of woods, as if they’re in the fairy forest or something on a tacky set of table and chairs. Oh, here’s another favorite exchange that’s icing on the cake.
Sam: I’m not supposed to laugh, right?
Coming up tomorrow, #13.
Aedeospina – I totally agree with your favorite scene but not only is Jared spot on with the whole sequence the fact that Jensen doesn’t even blink or turn to look makes me lose it every time. All he does is call out to make sure Sam is okay. It makes me wonder what had occurred between the restaurant and the apartment. ๐
I can’t imagine being able to narrow my choices down to 15 episodes, but I am enjoying your selections, ladies!
So far, I enjoy them all, but wouldn’t dare try to rank.
๐
I love all these episodes. More power to you 3 – I cannot get my favorites down to only 15! Looking forward to 13.
Two things:
Sweetenedean – Thank you! I cannot believe that all the times I saw that episode I never caught the Smith and Wesson reference!
Alice – love all the things you point out, but would add Sam’s rant at the fairy lady, ending with, all that’s missing is a dozen cats! The first time I saw that, I laughed so hard I cried!
This is such a fun read. I loved all of these episodes. I think I’d have a hard time choosing between It’s a Terrible Life and Bad Day at Bedrock. My favorite line in Terrible Life was the one, “I’m going to do a public service and tell you that you share too much” (paraphrased, I’m sure).
I might put Tall Tales ahead of Clap your hands story-wise, but dialogue-wise, I would go with Clap Your Hands. I agree, Sam’s dialogue throughout was hilarious.
I’ve decided to watch all of your choices from now until Jan. 16. Thanks for the mini-marathon idea! ๐ Now, let’s see if I can actually do it before hellatus is over.
Great Choices, Ladies. I have to say, Alice, that my favorite part of that whole episode is Sam with that tiny cup in his giant hands. “Do you have bigger cups?” HAAAAAA……
I have my top 15 down to about 27 episodes now…can I count all of season 6 as one episode? It would help ๐
All were great, but Clap Your Hands- funniest episode ever!! It put me in the floor laughing every time.jared was just gold in that one. One funny comment after another. And Jensen. Fighting the fairy. ( when there is really nothing there!) Priceless. And when he is describing the fairy to Sam. He says nipples and points his fingers. I die every time I watch it
Clap your Hands…Jarad’s timing and expressions were spot on. When he was responding to Dean about how he should have sat in the dark and worried about his missing brother rather than having sex he said, “it was in the dark”, I couldn’t stop laughing. I’m crying with laughter now just remembering that line.
Nice picks! “Clap Your Hands” is an episode that I originally thought jumped a little too far over the shark, but on subsequent viewings, I have so much fun! Soulless Sam was delightful. Tragic, but delightful. Dean tackling the lawyer was pretty great too. Thanks for reminding me.
My #14 episode is “Abandon All Hope”. There aren’t really words to describe watching Ellen and Jo stay behind in the hardware store, or the goodbye kiss Dean gives Jo – so many feels in this one. Add the fact that they managed to get to Lucifer and shoot him in the face, only to have him heal up and toss them aside. The scene at the end when they burn the picture is appropriately heartbreaking.
This would be higher, but I thought that it started a little slow, and more so, you’ll see my list get happier as it goes on. One thing I found after making this list is that even though my favorite scenes in Supernatural are the more emotional, heart-wrenching scenes, when considering entire episodes, I tended to rank the more humorous ones higher. You definitely learn some new things about yourself in this endeavor!
“Nobody likes the sound of that, Bobby! But… what, what does that sound like?” – Dean
Great work ladies, I love these episodes as well.
Ardeospina, in your first quote from the episode CYHIYB, I love the last line of Dean’s that you didn’t put in:
Dean: Close encounter! Close encounter!
Sam: Close encounter? What kind? First? Second?
Dean: They’re after me!
Sam: Third kind already? You better run, man. I think the fourth kind is a butt thing.
Dean: Empathy man, empathy!
I actually use this quote a lot in real life, its a shame though that nobody knows where I’m quoting it from!
my fav is blown away
