Preview of “Supernatural” 8.02: “What’s Up, Tiger Mommy?”
The season premiere kicked off in an explosion of questions and very few answers, piling mystery upon of mystery. Let’s quickly recap what we found out and then take a look at what’s coming this week.
THEN
A year has past and Dean’s back from Purgatory. He carried out new buddy, Benny, via the “soul train” and performed a resurrection spell to bring Benny back to “life.” Benny’s a vampire, so Dean’s become pals with a monster from Purgatory and in a you help me, I’ll help you scenario they travelled together through a portal back to the human world. It looks like their relationship started via wary convenience, but their joking and affectionate terms along with the hugging, shows they’ve since become friends and allies. However, once back in the land of the living they go their separate ways, after agreeing that this would be goodbye. But it seems Benny’s not content to end the friendship there and contacts Dean at the end of the episode, so we know this is a relationship that isn’t ending anytime soon.
Cass is places unknown. Dean doesn’t outright say he’s dead, but it’s implied, and as it’s only implied, we’ve got to assume Cass is not dead! Something went on in Purgatory that Dean isn’t talking about and I’d bet my bottom dollar it involves Cass. He says to Benny, that he doesn’t regret what happened in Purgatory, that they did what they had to do, but he wants to keep his distance, my guess is to ensure he can keep certain Purgatory facts, along with Benny, hidden from Sam.
Sam says he’s given up hunting and has been out of the family business for a year, trying to live a life with a woman called Amelia and a dog that he hit with the car. The big shocker is, Sam didn’t try to find Dean when Dean vanished before his eyes. But Sam is as equally evasive as Dean about their year apart and we’ve got to assume that means something more is going on. They both tap dance around the details. But at least they’re talking.
Even though he says he’s out of the game, Sam still has the Impala’s trunk fully stocked. He slid out on his girlfriend in the middle of the night to visit Rufus’ cabin. It all seems very mysterious. But by apparently turning his back on the family business there was an immediate consequence; Sam never heard the Prophet Kevin’s pleas for help. Once these pleas are finally heard, Sam and Dean team up again, jump in the Impala and go in search of the missing Kevin Tran.
Kevin escaped Crowley’s clutches and has been on the run for a year. He’s had to hole up and stay off the radar, because he knows a great big secret. Kevin has stashed a God tablet that gives the instructions as to how to close the gates of Hell, trapping all the demons inside forever and Kevin is the only one who can read it. When Kevin reunites with the Winchesters, the King of Hell is only hours behind them. But our heroic threesome manage to escape, unfortunately Kevin’s girlfriend doesn’t.
Fired up with a quest, a belly full of vengeance and a car full of questions, Sam and Dean and Kevin hit the road..
Oh, and there was a shadowy lurker outside of Sam’s house..who or what was watching?
NOW
Wow, a lot happened in the opening episode of the season! What a set up. So many questions and so much mystery so what’s in store this week?
The official synopsis reveals that Kevin, now terrified that Crowley is going to systematically kill those he loves, talks Sam and Dean into going and checking on his mum. When they arrive, they find her in peril and rescue her. They then hit the road on their quest for the God tablet. Sam and Dean have a mum in the backseat.this is going to be interesting. I have a feeling, four’s gonna be a crowd!
The promo shows us that the Winchester brothers, Kevin and Mrs Tran wind up at an auction that appears to be selling all sorts of supernatural objects, including the Word of God tablet. In one scene it looks like Sam is whipping around Thor’s hammer! There’s fighting and if you have a good look, flashes of Dean in Purgatory, so expect more Purgatory flashbacks Crowley is present, I’d say bidding on the tabletand I think Mrs Tran might punch him out! Yay!
It sounds like you have to bid more than moneylike your soulthat’s a pretty steep price.
I had a little thought about the Word of God tablet that gives instructions on closing Hell’s gates. We know that there’s always a side effect to everything the boys do. Everything good they accomplish, they accomplish at a price, whether it’s Sam going to Hell, or Dean going to Purgatory. So what if, when the gates of Hell are shutevery soul that has ever resided there is locked in, forever.including the souls that have escaped. What if every soul that’s ever been to Hell, is dragged back and locked up? I know a couple of brothers who might be affected by that and their dad (wherever he may be). It was just a thinky thought. Be a nasty side affect though and maybe price to high to pay.
But I digress!
We also have preview clip, which shows our foursome arriving at the headquarters for the auction and having to pass through a metal detector.
Sam, Kevin and Mrs Tran all pass through with no drama, but Dean. Oh Dean. Yeah, every bell goes off when Dean walks through. We then see him hand over what appears to be a ridiculous amount of weaponry (though maybe they’re not all his) including.the demon killing knife (and a ninja throwing starplease let them use a ninja throwing star). Sam usually carries the demon killing knife and we saw Dean hand it to Sam in the premiere episode. I guess, as Sam was obeying the rules he didn’t take the knife this timeDean on the other handdid.
That’s a pretty damn valuable supernatural object right there. Dean rightly looks worried about putting it in the box with the other weapons – including his Colt 1911 – saying, “I’ll be back for this.” Let’s hope they don’t lose that knife. With so many demons on their asses, they really need that knife.
It’s kind of cool having the demons back don’t you think? I really love the demons and they are so intrinsic to the mythology of “Supernatural”. I mean, they are the reason this whole thing started in one way or another I’m pretty jazzed that it looks like they’re going to play a big part in this season.
The preview clip is pretty innocuous, it doesn’t really give us much, unless it’s pointedly showing the knife because the knife is about to go walkabout. Other than that, the only thing it shows us is that Dean is very conscious of going through a metal detector. Bless his cotton socks as he pops his hands over the Winchester family jewels! I have to say I laughed so hard when I saw this clip. I wonder if that was in the script or all Jensen.
So that’s the set up for this week. The quest for the Word of God continues as the Winchesters and the family Tran team up. I hazard a guess that we’ll also slowly unravel some of the secrets surrounding the boys. I also thinkwe’ll see more of Purgatory and possibly, a certain someone.

O MY DEAR MOTHER OF GOD… that’s such a GREAT theory….. my my… it fits! … the boys … heros saving the entire world… O my that’s HUGE girl.. great great job! …. now I’ll go to my bedroom and cry.
It was just a random thought, but it would be typical huh? They always seem to be faced with these good/bad news situations!
I wondered about what could be shut up behind the Gates of Hell as well. Dean might actually be alright, but Sam drank all that demon blood and has been bound, to some extent, to the demons since he was 6 months old. It could get very tricky and interesting.
I LOVED THAT THEORY!! But of course, it must have a way out for the boys – I don’t care who would help, God himself would show. But the drama… I must be a masoquist.
Well, I for one hope the Winchesters’ souls aren’t on the line again. We’ve been up and down that roller coaster for a while now.
But you have got me worried about the Ruby knife. I can’t even imagine that weapon going away. Dean, especially, is very protective of it…and I don’t think “Purgatory” can take its place.
I understand there are supposed to be more Purgatory flashbacks shown, and I am loving those. Not very thrilled about seeing the Scooby Gang in the Impala.
I am curious to see how Crowley, Kevin, and the Winchesters can attend the same auction, since Crowley just made a move on Kevin last week. Also can’t figure out why he doesn’t just kill the Winchesters. I see no reason why he’s letting them live, and he can just snap their necks with a handwave. The Show needs to explain this.

WOW… that’s interesting theory. Could that be the reason why Sam hesitated in helping Kevin? That he already knew about the tablet? and wanted to know where Kevin keep it save so he can destroy it himself?
Could the rest of the angles, Cas’ old garrison or other angels been contacting Sam? (another guess on the mysterious person in black hat) JC did say thay’ll bring back angels, right?
JC did indeed say that. And you’d think they’d be trying to find the Prophet…if there were any left after the Leviathan went through them.
And you’d think they’d be trying to find the Prophet…
Aha! That’s another thought.
Hi sweetondean,
Interesting theory about Sam and Dean’s souls!
After watching 8.01, and noticing the part where Purgatory was described as “pure”, I sort of formed a theory of my own…What if Dean eventually feels that he prefers Purgatory over Heaven or Hell? During his brief stay in Heaven, I remember him saying that it wasn’t “real”, and sh*t’s still going on downstairs on Earth. He gave me the impression that he would never really feel “at peace” in Heaven like Pamela did.
I’m not saying that he would feel at peace in Purgatory, but more like…at ease…? I know it’s like a war zone, always being on the edge, never getting a chance to rest, etc, but is it possible that Dean would prefer, even in death, to continue hunting, rather than reliving the memory of his mother making him sandwiches, all the while feeling that it’s not “real”?
Also, about the monster souls in Purgatory, where do they go when they “die” again? The vampires Dean and Benny decapitated, did they just cease to exist? Move on to Hell? Respawn? If their souls are destroyed forever, perhaps that would be another incentive for Dean to go back and eliminate the risk of the monsters escaping Purgatory just in case Crowley or whoever else tries to reopen Purgatory in the future.
The only problem I had with this theory was that I couldn’t create a believable scenario where Dean tells Sam he wants to go back to Purgatory. Dean would have to willingly choose to be turned into a supernatural creature in order to go back when he dies, and then there’s the issue of Sam and Dean being separated forever if one goes to Heaven and the other to Purgatory.
Which is where your theory comes in! What if they find out that their souls will be dragged back to Hell, and the only way to avoid that is if their souls are already in Purgatory? Sure,”kill or be killed” doesn’t sound much better than “torture or be tortured”, but if killing monsters in Purgatory means they’re destroyed forever…Well, if in a gazillion years (it’s not like there’s a time limit) they eventually succeed in killing ALL the monsters in Purgatory…Then they’ll have banished all demons back to Hell AND stopped Eve’s children from ever resurfacing again. Double win!!
The “endgame” would then be Sam and Dean choosing to continue doing what they do best – saving people, hunting things, and watching each others’ backs while they’re at it – but in Purgatory. And maybe the CW will decide to let the show go on forever, and we can just sit back every week and watch Dean hack and slash at monsters while delivering snarky one-liners, and watch Sam hack and slash at monsters while flipping his hair and growing out his sideburns. And eventually, the harsh environment of Purgatory will take its toll on Sam and Dean’s clothes, and by Season 15, they’ll be wearing nothing but fig leaves.
Jean, I nearly choked on an apple reading your last paragraph! Now I’ve got a vision of Sam and Dean hacking monsters to bits in nothing but fig leaves! 😉
Haha, good luck getting that vision out of your head! Although I’m not really sure why you would want to…!
Jean! That might be the best idea ever! And like PaintedWolf…I’m now merrily thinking about them running through Purgatory in just a fig leaf………and….still thinking….. 😛
Glad you approve of it! As for the fig leaves, the idea first came to me when I heard that Season 7 was about stripping away everything Sam and Dean had… 😳
Well, I’d imagine many people would’ve been far more impressed with season 7 if that had been the plot…Oh man, now I’m thinking of 23-episode super slow-mo stripping. Episode 1, they shed the jackets…
All right, now I’m thinking about naked Winchesters! Mmmmm, naked Winchesters.
Avoided this post before to stay away from spoilers. And missed a conversation about NAKED WINCHESTERS! Damn. That hurts.
Dean’s clothes were in too good of condition after a year at war. We should have some HUGE rips and tears at least. Just for the sake of realism, I mean. That is a missed opportunity Mr. Carver.
As far as your theory goes, very impressive and completely logical. I hope your wrong. Well at least that the don’t permanently end up there. I’ve come to terms with the fact that they probably won’t survive the show. But I can’t handle the thought of either in hell (or even purgatory-lack of clothes or not fighting monsters would eventually get very tiring) for all eternity.
Now something to figure a way out of -that would be great.
Fig leaves? OMG!
Joining you all in the shallow pool….
Aw heck, who am I kidding? I just pulled the plug and drained that sucker. 😳
Gosh, so much fun to think about! But really, I don’t think TPTB are going to give us so much as ONE ep with only fig leaves! But we can hope.
Meanwhile, I think the end game will have Sam and Dean heading off to heaven together, as we know they share “Winchesterland” and they are “soul mates”. Meanwhile, locking all the demons in Hell would probably pull all demons back, but since Sam nor Dean are demons, I don’t see them being affected. I could see them going to Purgatory together at some point, either to retrieve Cass or put Benny back if he gets out of hand on terra firma.
Happy watching! Fig leaves….Bwa ha ha!
