“Supernatural — a show currently in its 11th season — is something of a home away from home for me at this point. It’s been with me through some major life moments, and I’ve found comfort from it time and time again — especially when I deeply miss my home or family. I’ve watched it maybe 10 times all the way through — thank you, Netflix and TNT — but even after seeing the episodes so many times, I can still turn it on at any time and be sucked right in. (Yes, even Season 6 and 7, ugh.) It’s also satisfying to know that the show is still going strong all these years later. (If you haven’t seen Season 11’s “Baby,” you’re missing out.)” — Gonzalez

As the year winds down, sites are listing best and worst for 2015 Supernatural has made the following lists:
TV Fanatic listed us in several categories –
17 Baddies Who are Just Too Darn Good with Crowley at #5
He is the King of Hell and the leader of the underworld, but we still want to drink umbrella drinks and take selfies with him. Crowley used to be a super scary demon, but now that we have spent more time getting to know him, we know that he is just a demon with lots of feelings. He loves HBO, he will kill anyone in his way, he wants to be Dean’s BFF and his mother keeps trying to have him killed. What’s not to love?
and gone but never forgotten Meg at #15.
In the early years, Meg was nothing more than a Hell-serving demon that kept messing with our favorite brothers. She was the reason Jo and Ellen died, and she caused non-stop trouble for the Winchester family for years. When the traditional Heaven and Hell roles were tossed out the window, we started to see a change in her. She seemed to really care about Cas and started to wonder if she could be good too. She met her end helping Castiel and the Winchesters escape but we all know that nobody is ever really gone on Supernatural.
16 Twisted Plots that Rocked Our Worlds in 2015
On Supernatural, Sam was seeing visions of Lucifer’s cage in Hell. Sam thought it was God giving him clues on how to defeat the Darkness. With Crowley and Rowena’s help, Sam goes to talk to Lucifer to ask him about the Darkness. During the chat, Sam is suddenly zapped into Lucifer’s Cage and Lucifer tells Sam that the visions were coming from him! God was never helping Sam and now Lucifer wants to use Sam as his vessel again.
19 Noteworthy Character Exits from 2015 with Charlie’s death at #3.
Charlie’s death at the end of Supernatural Season 10 still hurts. She was such a fun character and one of the only females on the show so it was especially tragic when she was murdered. We will miss all of the nerdy moments she brought to the show, like when she made the guys watch all of the Harry Potter movies and binge Game of Thrones. Her relationship with Dean was so sweet. Hopefully we will get to see her again. Nobody is ever really dead on Supernatural.
Rowena made #9 TV Fanatic’s 12 Characters Who Wasted Our Time in 2015
Rowena from Supernatural just won’t go away. She was supposed to be a big bad, but that obviously didn’t pan out. Instead, she’s an over-the-top cartoon that somehow manages to keep getting away from Sam and Dean as much as she keeps worming her way into storylines. And unfortunately Supernatural Season 11 couldn’t turn things around for her to make her any more interesting or villainous, so we have to keep hearing her spout out ridiculous things like Mega Covens or being a fan girl of Lucifer. It’s just tiresome at this point.
Charlie’s death was #28 in Buddy TV’s Major TV Character Deaths of 2015 while the death of Death made #29. Buddy TV also listed Dean’s Words to Sam When He Thinks He’s at the End of His Rope as one of The 29 Most Heartbreaking TV Moments of 2015.
EW listed The Darkness Is God’s Sister, Supernatural as one of their 40 Most Shocking TV Moments of 2015.
TVLine rated : Charlie on Supernatural as the Most Unnecessary Death of 2015.
In encouraging news, The CW has signed another affiliate group The CW Inks New Affiliate Agreement With Nexstar. It’s looking good that the CW and Supernatural will survive for many more years.
Have a happy holiday season and see you next year!
Thank you for compiling all of these links. It will help me get through the break.
And I agree that Charlie’s death was the most unnecessary and Rowena has wasted the most screen time.
Thanks for the great article. It reminded me that I still have some blu ray extras to watch! 😀
Great job with these articles. They are important part of this site that keep us up to date on SPN news around the net. Much appreciated!
Charlie’s death was VERY necessary. The character did NOT have a good episode since season 8. Plus, they handled her death pretty well; she had a more “heroic” end than Bobby or Kevin did.
If they do decide to resurrect Charlie, I think they should make her EVIL and team her up with Rowena. Those two actresses had pretty good chemistry. I think it would be cool to see Charlie as part of the MEGA COVEN and work against the boys for a while.
Note: if you want to talk “unnecessary” deaths, let’s talk Kevin or Benny. THOSE were truly unnecessary deaths.
I understood Kevin’s death. They couldn’t have him wandering around the bunker and not explain where he was in every episode. Since it was too dangerous for him to be wandering around outside Kevin had to go. Benny wasn’t a very useful character either the way he was written. He could have been a great ally for the boys. Instead he was used as a wedge. Charlie on the other hand was a recurring character that was very popular with a majority of fans and had great chemistry with Jensen and Jared. I know some didn’t like her but she had her own life so she didn’t need to be tied to the Winchesters like Kevin or become a wedge like Benny. She was just a fun recurring character that really didn’t need to die. There were so many other ways to have gotten Dean to where he ended up rather than “fridging” Charlie.
A character desperately in need of a story is Castiel. He hasn’t been really useful or part of the Winchester story since S5.
I respectfully disagree. There were plenty of ways they could have handled Benny and/or Kevin, aside from killing them off, and BOTH these characters had a reasonably big fan following. Charlie, on the other hand, was a lot more controversial. Some fans LOVED her, while others did not–whereas Kevin & Benny were generally liked by most fans.
Regardless, Charlie’s story got ridiculous. The “Wizard of Oz” story was laughable, and they never were able to integrate a computer “nerd” into the MOL. I think killing her off a hero was the perfect ending for her.
But like I said, an evil Charlie story would be cool to watch. Rowena could resurrect her (since she has the Book of the Damned), and the two can team-up to take revenge on the Winchesters. Charlie would be super-p*ssed that she died for Sam & Dean, and she’d probably remember Rowena’s warning to her in that same episode (about her loyalty to the Winchesters would be her undoing). Plus, that whole speech Rowena gave her about them “not being all that different” sets the stage for Charlie training as a witch under Rowena’s tutelage.
Well we did have evil Charlie and she was cool to watch. I agree her last episode was very poorly written. She really was generally loved by most fans. Even at SDCC Charlie’s death got JC pretty much booed by fans and (playfully, sort of) ignored by the cast on stage. Jensen was so upset by the decision he actually spoke out at conventions (something Jensen almost never does) and called a meeting with the bosses. Something that hasn’t happened with Benny or Kevin.
Benny could have made a great ally for the brothers but he just wasn’t written that way. Benny was written as a wedge and every other episode he was begging for Dean to bring him blood. How were they going to explain long lapses when Dean was busy doing other things? Where was Benny going to get his blood? Join a family like Garth did? That would have been awful.
And like I said they kind of wrote themselves into a corner with Kevin. What really could they have done with him? He was a prophet until death that was coveted by both angels and demons. It wasn’t safe for him outside the bunker and SPN was never going to make Osric a 4th lead in the show so the only avenue available was that Kevin had to die. If the brothers were in the bunker it was going to be awkward to continuously explain Kevin’s absence. As much as I loved Kevin and hated that he died it made sense to the story and I understood why it had to happen.
Charlie was a character that could come and go. Since she had been pretty much on the run her whole life it wouldn’t have required any explanation as to where she was or how she was surviving. And like I said she had such wonderful chemistry with the whole cast.
I am looking forward to Felicia Day on MST3K though. I think she will be great.
Oh no, Charlie was not generally loved by fans. She was loved by SOME fans, whereas other fans despised her. Although, to be fair, this isn’t unique to Charlie. That’s pretty much the way it is for all of Supernatural’s supporting characters, including Castiel and Crawley. Fans have very divergent opinions about them. Frankly, the only supporting characters for which it is safe to say that all fans love are Bobby, John and Mary.
IDK every convention (and I am one of those obsessed fans that watches all of the convention footage) where Charlie’s name is mentioned or when Felicia is there the cheers and applause seem louder for her than for most any other guest character. I do understand that there are those that didn’t like her (many are on this site) but in general Charlie was very well liked in the fandom. I read dozens of reviews for Supernatural after each episode and Charlie has always been very popular with critics. Her gruesome death was widely panned by every review I read and made many end of year lists as the most unnecessary. At a convention just recently a 13 year old girl asked the guys what female character they would want to be on the show. Jared’s response was obviously Ruby while Jensen said Rowena. They both got cheers. When Jensen asked the young fan who she wanted to be she said Charlie. The room literally erupted. I think there is a small group of fans that love to despise some of the characters on the show. But I don’t think that is the majority.
But everyone has their own POV and obviously we disagree. So dead horse?
