Top 11 Castiel Moments
8. Cass expresses his doubts in “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester”
This was only the fourth episode Castiel was in, and the first three painted him as an angel who was sympathetic to the Winchesters’ cause but was still heaven’s soldier and would do what was necessary to stop the apocalypse. So for him to come to Dean at the end of the episode and express that he was having doubts about heaven’s plan, that he was rooting for Dean and wanted him to succeed, well, that was pretty huge. That moved him from rogue angel to probable ally, and it was the start of the deepening friendship between Dean and Cass.
7. Three demons bite the dust in “The Man Who Would Be King”
This was so super badass. It’s awesome when Cass gets to go all BAMF, and this was one of his finest kickass moments. Two demons in your way? Smite them both! And how do you follow an excellent smiting? With an even more excellent smiting! Who cares if that demon is trying to smoke out of its vessel? Smite it anyway! Vengeful wrath at its finest.
6. “We had an appointment” in “The End”
Talk about best timing ever! Stubborn old Dean hadn’t learned the lesson Zachariah wanted him to during his trip to the future, so what’s left to do but send Dean back again and again until he does? It’s a frightening prospect. How many times can Dean watch his brother be Lucifer, watch his brother kill him before he snaps? Blessedly, before Zachariah is able enact his nefarious plan, Cass shows up and brings Dean back to the past. He told Dean he’d wait for him, and he did. It was just such a wonderfully Cass thing to do.
5. Cass blasts four angels, including himself, into oblivion in “Point of No Return”
This moment was pretty amazing, but it was pretty heartbreaking, too. I mean, before he went into the warehouse to fight off those angels, he basically tells Dean he’d rather die than watch him fail. Ouch. Because, really, Cass has no idea what’s going to happen to him when he blasts himself away with that sigil. But he knows Sam and Dean have to get into that green room to rescue Adam and thwart Zachariah, so he takes the box cutter and goes to work. Of all the lessons he’s learned from the Winchesters, he’s taken self-sacrifice to heart most.
Awesome list. And so true. I was so unsure of what to make of our resident nerd Angel when they introduced him. I had NO idea what or where the story was going with him, but before I knew it, I had taken him into the fold of the show and can’t imagine anyone other than Misha playing him.
With the new promo floating about, I am left wondering what will happen next. Is it September 23 yet?
Thanks! I loved Castiel from the start and have really enjoyed watching him progress. I just hope he gets some redemption. I’m nervous!
Thank you! All these moments make me hope more than ever that Cas is saved, redeemed and put right back where he belongs: alongside Dean in Team Free Will. Happy birthday Misha… he is such a wonderful ambassador for the show, and has given us so many great moments. Hopefully he’ll give us many more. 🙂
Me too! They can’t just let him go, right? RIGHT?!?!?!?! 😉
Ah… Castiel… What a fascinating character! Thank you for this awesome list, Flamey!
I would have had similar difficulties finding his best ten moments! But I’m sure, Castiel would approve. There are sweet and badass moments here. Complexity. Just as complex as the character.
And – how can you not love Misha?! I would love to sit down with the man and just talk for hours, pick his brilliant brain for a little while.
Happy Birthday from the bottom of my heart!
Love, Jas
You’re welcome, dear! It was hard to narrow it down, but someone has to make the tough choices.
It’s impossible not to love Misha. I think they’re doing scientific tests to try and figure out why.
Happy Birthday Misha!
Hi Ardeospina
Totally agree with all your choices, especially your #1.
One of my many favourite moments is #6. I just love that scene and Dean telling him “Don’t ever changeâ€
To add to the list I also loved in ‘Lucifer Rising’ how Castiel stood ground with Chuck, willing to hold off the Archangel that was coming while Dean tried to stop Sam.
And in “In The Beginning†when Dean realised he was too late to stop Mary from making the deal with Yellow-eyes. They way Castiel put his hand on Dean’s shoulder and the compassion in his face, it gets to me every time.
Thank you for this wonderful tribute to Misha/Castiel.
Hey, Karen! I definitely contemplated those moments, especially standing his ground against the archangels. They’re both excellent choices. I probably should have made a runner-up list! Those would have been on there for sure.
First of all, Happy Birthday to Misha!
I love every moment of Castiel. Your #1 is my all time favourite. I think I actually exclaimed with joy when I saw his angel wings for the first time. The whole mythology surrounding angels makes me giddy with happiness. I love everything about them, good angels, fallen angels, badass angels, you name it, I’m there! So, when TPTB decided to introduce Castiel into the show, I was elated to say the least. My favourite Castiel episode would be “The Man That Would Be King”, it’s filled with such sadness and Misha played it so beautifully. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Ben Edlund is a genius.
Now, if only September 23rd could get here so that we can find out what will happen to this broken friendship. I can’t wait.
Sorry, it’s “The Man Who Would Be King”. I was so excited, I miswrote.
Yes, the wings! Soooo cool. I’m glad they haven’t overused them, too. That was smart. Well, probably budget-saving, but still. Smart.
And I have to agree about the brilliance of “The Man Who Would Be King.” I can’t wait for the DVDs so I can watch that one again and again and again.
Castiel had the best entrance in ‘Lazarus Rising’. He shows up all bad ass, none of the weapons work on him, and then the wings unfold. WOW. 😀
Even Bobby didn’t have a cool intro, Sam and Dean just showed up at his door. Ok, we heard that Bobby ran John off with a shotgun (probably about his ‘fathering skills’), but he was just there.
Season four Cas was bad ass. Period, end of discussion. 🙂
Season five, he was more comic relief because he was not at full power, but he did have his bad ass moves, especially the one from ‘Swan Song’. ‘The End’ Cas was just sad because he was a mortal, but he still believed in Future!Dean.
Season six Cas is just a lying liar that lies. 😆 It is interesting watching season six in reruns, knowing that Cas had been lying to Sam and Dean right from his first appearance in ‘3rd Man’. Of course, the ending of ‘Swan Song’, now has to been seen in a completely different light (pun intended) 😆
Damn, this little comment just grew, but it is still more than a month until Season Seven (Woohoo) starts, and I need something to do. 😛
We need a new category for season 7 Cass! Hopefully it will be something like, “Misguided angel who became a god and then lost his powers and realized he had hurt his friends so he was extra badass and funny and helpful in an effort to make it up to them and now he’s totally awesome again the end.”
Awesome list! All show how well the character can work. I have enjoyed watching the different sides of Castiel, and all the little moments he adds to the series.
It’s hard to remove anything from this list, but if it were to be cranked up past eleven, I would have to add the moments in “The Man Who Would Be King” that take place in Cas’s favorite Heaven. So touching.
And then there is “On the Head of a Pin”, when Castiel opposed both Alastair and Uriel. That to me was when he first started making his own decisions, however small.
I also liked his confrontation with Anna in “The Song Remains the Same”, because it showed how much humanity he had gained, and I think now shows some of what’s been lost. I hope it can be recovered.
Thank you! And your moments are all good choices, too. There were just so many nuggets of goodness. It could have been a top 20 or more, probably.
Thanks! Matching pics with the topic is one of my favorite things. And I have a lot of leeway with that, being a site admin. Heh. Abuse of power!
Too true! I would have been putting up every moment he’s on screen. *sighs* I love Castiel.
Arde,
I am so sorry, I realised I never thanked you for this list. 😳
But you know how much I love this as you know how much I love our `little nerdy angel`.
I really admire your restraint managing to pick so few scenes, as you say you could have just chosen every scene he was in. Ju
To watch Cas’s journey over the past few seasons has been amazing, this one little angel went from loyal soldier, to human ally, to rebel with a cause, to someone making his own decisions, to being misguided with the best intentions, and now a power hungry god-like figure. And through it all, Misha gave a brilliant performance every time that only served to elevate the performances of those around him, made them all step up their game!
Castiel’s story over the seasons has honestly been one of the most amazing character growth on this show. If you think about it, Sam, Dean, and Bobby, they’ve all grown and changed, but not as much as Cas has done in these past few seasons. There is so much to explore with this character, he’s such a goldmine, and I sure hope in Season 7, the writers will continue to integrate him into the storyline rather than send him away in a rushed goodbye, because there is a much more powerful and heart-breaking story to tell in a tale of redemption and forgiveness for Cas, and I want to see it happen!
This character has been through so much, he’s risked his life, he’s died for humanity’s cause, and even now through all his lies and betrayals in Season 6, it was still to give humanity a surviving chance. This one little angel was fighting for the world so hard that he never noticed that in saving the world, he was losing himself in the process. Now he’s become the monster that he’s tried so hard to stop, I just hope that the boys will finally come through for Cas to save him, not to kill him!
It’s funny how after a recent viewing of the Dark Knight movie, I found myself realizing that this one quote fits Cas perfectly, “You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”
I don’t believe the Castiel character is done yet, there are so much potential still to be explored, and I hope the writers in Season 7 will give the character that chance, because a story of redemption will always be more powerful than a quick exit, and it would also greatly effect the lives of the boys as well to see them all struggle through this mess to find forgiveness and reunite their broken bond!
Castiel is family now, and we don’t just give up on family! He may not be a Winchester by blood, but he’ll always be one by heart!
Beautifully written! I couldn’t agree more. It’s been gut wrenching watching the deterioration of the Dean and Cas friendship. Cas has become a true fallen angel just like the rest of us while proving Dean’s supposition (Aquinas be damned) that there is no predetermination just free will. I will be curious as to how the writers will proceed with the consequences of this act. Also I believe you are correct that a story line dealing with redemption is bound to be more powerful and one that really hasn’t been deeply explored. After all this series’ basic foundations rests on symbols of a Redemptive Faith a few of which we see every week-Holy water, Rosaries, Bibles and Crosses!
Personally I would hate to see Cas not be a part of Dean’s eventual acknowledgement of a higher power. He seems to have been working his way toward that slowly and I felt that Cas also felt it and encouraged it. Somehow I would like to see Dean finally get there with Cas’ influence. What do you think?
