Preview and Episode Discussion: Caged Heat (6.10)
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!
Well, the gang’s all here this episode. Dean, Sam, Cass, Samuel the magnificent Meg Masters, who has a romantic encounter with Cass, all onboard for a showdown with the King of Hell. Things turn very serious this week as Meg reappears and kidnaps the boys in an attempt to find Crowley, who as it turns out, is also trying to find Meg. Seems Crowley is not in favor of any Lucifer supporting demons. Sam decides to take this opportunity to make a deal with Meg to get his soul back-yea- those have always worked out well. (But before the midseason break, he won’t be the only one making deals.)
The preview shows Dean and Sam walking into their motel room. Dean says he’s done working for Crowley as it is not getting them anywhere. Sam tells his brother to calm down, but Dean is not so inclined. Sam says okay they can always go with Plan B. Whoops-they don’t have a plan B, so they basically don’t have a choice. Sam insists they have to do this if they want to get Sam’s soul back, but his brother asks him if he even wants it back. Sam says, “I’m working for Crowley, aren’t I?” which really isn’t an answer. (And besides we already know Sam’s doesn’t want it back-.at least not now) Dean turns to pour himself a drink saying they can’t even be sure Crowley will keep his end of the bargain. (Bet he would if they still had his bones from “Weekend at Bobby’s”.) He turns back around, and Sam’s gone. His first thought was that Sam felt the conversation was over and just left. When calling for him results in silence, Dean, gun in hand, searches for his brother, and finds Sam unconscious in another room. Enter Meg.
Meg captures the boys and in the promo, she is, once again, in Dean’s face (“Shadow”, “Sympathy for the Devil”) with a knife at his throat. (Wonder if she’s still into peanut butter?) However, unlike that either of those episodes, Dean is in panic mode until Soulless!Sam deduces that Meg is running scared and she’s furious that she can’t kill Dean. (Hope the episode answers WHY she can’t. Didn’t know the boys were protected any more.) And about now is when Dean and Sam decide to make a deal with Meg. They help her find Crowley, if she tortures him to get Sam’s soul back. Enter Castiel and Grandpa Winchester.
Cass and Samuel join the group and decide the best place to find Crowley is in Hell’s prison where he is torturing all those alpha monsters that Samuel has been collecting for him. Grandpa Campbell doesn’t have good things to say about the place either. “Nothing gets in and nothing gets out”, he states. Wrong, Grandpa Samuel. That maybe true for normal people, but not for the Winchesters, especially when they have a demon and an angel on their side. (Maybe two angels)
So Team Free Will, plus Meg, end up in Hell’s prison, and guess what, things don’t go as planned. (When do they ever!) The plan starts to fall apart when Castiel can’t abide working with a demon.-even one that seems to be sweet on him.
Misha made comments recently that Cass does get some romance in an upcoming episode. Given some of the stills released last week-this is it. Misha also stated that he and Meg ‘kind of/sort of’ wanted to give the impression in “Abandon All Hope” that there was something more going on between them than just being on the opposite sides of a fence. This is a continuation of that concept. I have to say, we had Dean and an angel (Anna), Sam and a demon (Ruby), now an angel (Cass) and a demon (Meg). Interesting! Maybe Meg helps Cass with Raphael. (She was an angel at one time you know. Not a bad idea to tag-team with Cass.) Are Cass and Meg going to be an item? Only time will tell, but given the look on the Winchester’s faces, they don’t seem too embarrassed to watch the encounter. Come on boys, give the budding couple some privacy.
…or not. Maybe all is not as it seems.
The trip to Crowley’s prison is not a walk in the park. After all, Crowley is not just going to give the boys his head. Bloody fighting takes place, and at some point Meg gets captured and tortured herself-kind of like Ruby in season four’s “Heaven and Hell”. Wonder if the torturer is Alistair. Sam’s powers did obliterate him in “On the Head of a Pin”, but no one stays dead in SPN.
Speaking of Sam’s powers, in a scene in the promo both boys appear to be fighting demons, but then Sam looks up with a VERY evil smile displaying teeth covered in blood. Has he had some demon blood to drink? Certainly would be plenty available. And some neat powers would be cool to see again. But that’s just my wish, other explanations abound as well. One is that it’s a skinwalker- a ‘guest’ of the King of Hell. After all, no reason to think Crowley hasn’t captured the alpha skinwalker from “Two Men and a Baby”. In fact, just about any monster could be locked down there-.waiting allies for the boy no doubt. They certainly would have a common enemy in Crowley.
We do get reacquainted with one of Crowley’s prisoners, the head djinn, Brigitta, from “Exile on Main Street”. She’s been beaten and locked in a cell. I’m wondering if alpha vamp will reappear too. He certainly is down there.
In the last frame of the promo, we get a glimpse of Crowley in what appears to be a fright-filled scream. Here I have to wonder if this is where Crowley and Cass lock horns. Seems to be early in the season for that to happen, but Misha had mentioned a while back, that Cass would ‘kick Crowley’s ass’ in a future episode and I’m thinking maybe this is it. Would be neat to see, BUT it doesn’t get Sam his soul back. They are still hunting for it next week, when other past flamboyant characters show up.
The Space channel released two clips for the episode and a promo. The second clip and the promo give us insight into why Sam is not interested in getting his soul back. Seems during his time in the cage with Lucifer and Michael the archangels have had nothing to do but take their frustrations out on Sam. Cass warns that should Dean and he, try to force the rejoining of Sam and his soul, the repercussions could be catastrophic. Dean, of course, is willing to help his brother through the healing process and deal with any complications that arise. Cass warns that if they fail, Sam will suffer tremendously.
Just as a side note, it was reported that Balthazar (Sebastian Roche) gets involved at some point as well before the midseason break, so don’t be surprised if he shows up in this episode. I’d love it. So like his and Cass’s friendship.

In a recent Entertainment Weekly interview, executive producer, Sera Gamble, talked about the next two episodes. “The brothers are tired of Crowley calling the shots,” she explained, “so each of them goes pretty far to try to solve Sam’s problem.”
She also said the fans should expect “a new sort of brotherly rapport” developing between Dean and Sam. She continues, “I can only speak for myself, but I kind of find it charming and enjoyable in its own twisted way. I would never say that it replaces the core relationship that we all love and we all want them to go back to and that Dean is desperately trying to recapture, but for where we are with the story right now, there’s something sort of interesting and fun happening.”
I, for one, liked the old brotherly rapport, and hope they can get that back ASAP. But with Sam’s lack of interest in getting his soul back, I don’t think that will be any time soon. Given the information that Sam being whole again could be worse for him, it might be best for the boys to work at dealing with Sam as is. I have to wonder though, if Sam already knew the result of having his soul back, why would he have ever agreed to work for Crowley? Seems he could have just told Dean the situation from the start-.must is more pieces of the puzzle yet to come.
So, that’s my thoughts for this week. What are yours? Any idea how all this turns out? I’m really interested in how they depict hell’s prison and its entry and exit points, especially with the noir theme that have for this season. Are the doors on the cells just a lock and key device, or is some special magic involved in their operation? Many possibilities, but a limited budget puts a cap on to many special effects. (Though rumor has it there are some cool computer generated images coming next half of the season. Let’s hope that’s true!)
Happy viewing everyone. Come back and tell us what you think.
Grampa Campbell, not Winchester. You might want to fix that.
Faye thanks. I just have Winchester on the brain!
I’m giddy with excitement about this one. Giddy, so I am!!
I have to say the setting looks awesome. (I’d say Ardeospina is exercising her typing fingers in preparation for visual review of this one already!) I love episodes with a scary ass atmosphere where the brothers are working towards a common goal.
I don’t know what I was expecting but the holding facility for the Alphas looks very non-secure to me (it looks like a hostel I stayed in, tbh.) I kind of thought they’d be kept in a non-tortury part of hell or middle earth or something. Also, keeping the world’s most dangerous Alphas together in one place seems a little silly. Ah well, guess that’s why I’m not King of Hell.
I’m intrigued as to who is actually telling the truth between Castiel and Crowley. Who is to be trusted??? Why is Castiel so adamant that Sam’s soul is with Michael and Lucifer? Does Sam know/feel where his soul is right now? Who do people want to have Sam’s soul? And where IS your soul, little Sammy (this whole soul issue has the makings of an epic ballad for all future hunters to sing around the campfires.)
I’m sorry but Castiel getting it on with Meg (in front of Sam and Dean!) is just wrong on so many levels. It’s kinda like watching a ferret hopping on a… y’know…. squirrel. One’s meant to take your finger off with one bite while the other is meant to be cute and cuddly (though he might give you rabies.) Yearrah, that relationship will never last.
I have to say that since Sam lost his soul, he has become the world’s best lie detector. He’d put Goran and that guy from ‘Lie to Me’ to shame. The brothers will miss that gift when it’s gone.
Dear Castiel and Dean, please don’t fail, please don’t fail. I can’t stand to see Sammy cry. It gives me an ache right here (points to pit of stomach.) And the thought of Michael and Lucifer taking their frustration out on Sam gives me an ache right here (points to heart).
Two more sleeps………
I just have to say I called this a few weeks ago in one of my comments on Elle2’s review. There was no way having your soul locked in Hell’s Cage with Michael and Lucifer ends well. Those who want to have an angst filled Sam are probably going to get their wish and then some. Only a matter of time.
I read somewhere, I think that interview with Sera that same was going to get his soul back soon but not before the mid-season break. Really curious to see the ramifications. Can’t imagine how he’d be in any condition to hunt.
As for Cas and Meg. I have to believe that it’s all an act on one or both of their parts. Castiel has bigger fish to fry with his Angelic Civil War and Meg is only interested in helping Meg or whoever’s powerful enough to get her what she wants.
No matter what happens, I can’t wait until tomorrow!
I am very excited for this episode. And seeing Sam in the promos…. i am loving this sam.I am also glad that there is some thought given to Sam’s soul .Even though we knew about what might be happening to his soul i am glad it has been addressed and not left for us to deduce.
Thanks, Sablegreen! Really excited to watch this episode online as SPN6 is not shown yet in the Philippines.
As for the news of additional pain that Sam had and that both boys may face: where do I sign up as GOD HERSELF so that I could kick their supernatural asses, esp. those of my two angelic brats–Luci and Mike?
I meant “kick the asses of some angels and demons” for the pain they’ve given or about to give the boys. *HIYAAAA!*
Oooh, truly ambassador, you are spoiling us … Cas, Crowley, Granpa C. AND Meg ( although not the version with the funky hair, Boo, Hiss ) and invading Hell, too. What larks, eh?
Sounds like a recipe for disaster, of course. I’m all agog. I love it when a plan goes horribly wrong. 😀
Ok .. this episode was wrong in so many funny ways!
“Why does the Pizza man continue to spank her? Was she bad?”
Oh yes, Cas she was bad .. almost as bad as Meg was .. but I’m sure Meg is all clean now after you checked her tonsils (creepy yet brilliant).
I’m sad to see Crowley/Mark Sheppard leave .. my favorite Demon is gone .. 🙁
Oh wait … silly me Sam is still there .. I do still have ONE favorite demon left!
/sigh … The crew astounded me with the funny quirks in this show but I am definitely loosing faith in ever seeing my Sam back again in any functioning capacity from previous seasons. That being said .. this new ‘quasi-evil’ Sam is hot as hell and since I’m an excellent judge of ex-husbands I’ve decided I’ll take him anyway I can get my fix (though I do have Seasons 1 – 5 sitting beside my DVD Player).
Just curious though … Anyone mentioned or noticed that Dean has really changed? Like he’s not the womanizing drunk he used to be? I have a theory that this has to do with the new promo of him with holy light looking down at Sam who is standing in hell fire. The caption on the new promo posters (Sam is cuddling a snake and Dean’s in the background with /gulp “halo”?) states “All Evil Shall See the Light”. Has new lines been celestially drawn for the brothers?
This episode pretty much tells us, much as it did to Sam, that if both Angels and demons feel his soul is screwed … then it must be FUBR. Only thing I can see Sam striving for now …
New King of Hell … /shrug
Nah, really my money is on Meg.
Wow, not at all what I expected. Definitely requires a rewatch and close analysis. So how did Castiel find those bones so easily? I guess he’s never needed that tactic to kill a demon before. Poor Cas, he just needs to bond again. I feel for him, I feel the same way. I felt for Sam too, it’s like Dean isn’t giving him a say.
I don’t get it. One week Sam is a jerk, one week he’s okay. He was perfect in this one. Now one week Samuel is the good guy, one week he isn’t, and he sells out his own grandsons? For the sake if his daughter? Does that makes sense? Color me confused.
However, I loved them all working together, even Meg. She was great in this episode. I wish Dean would come out and say it, he can’t live with this Sam. He’s willing to take an impossible risk just for that. No wonder Sam got mad at the end. Sad ending, but this one I got. So what happens to Hell now? Sorry, more coherent thoughts coming later.
Wow, just wow. I can’t believe they killed off Crowley! I didn’t see that coming since Mark Shepphard is a fan favorite. And Cass + Porn = HILARIOUS!!! 😆
Samuel makes no sense. Yeah, he gets his daughter back but he does not realize that she would be really pissed off when she finds out it was at the expense of her sons. And I just had a feeling that was his motive, either Mary or Deanna.
I agree with the confusion over Sam’s shifting persona, but we have to realize Jared is working really well with what he’s given. I attribute all of that to the writers not being in sync this season. And then I rationalize that as well. Sometimes it’s hard to remember each season is a first draft. Sure each script is written and re-written, sure they plot out the entire thing months in advance and endless amounts of people work on it, but they couldn’t have predicted how Sam’s behavior would vary from episode to episode depending on what needs to happen. I’m sure if they got a re-do, they’d go back and say here, this is how Sam consistently needs to be the entire season, let’s all get on board, guys.
I really liked this episode. I liked the reveals and the twists, which I wasn’t expecting. In fact, I was expecting this to be a filler, set-uppy episode. Incorrect! I loved the return of Cas, and I loved when Crowley (or someone) said, “Where have you been this season?” Haha. And Cas was so hilarious with the porn scene. I wonder how many times they had to shoot that.
I see now why Sam doesn’t want his soul back. I wouldn’t either, at this point. Rip him to shreds? Severe emotional trauma? Eeeugh. I thought he was being selfish when I read the description for next episode, how he goes looking for a spell to keep it out of his body, but I get it now. Damn, I am so looking forward to the angst when he gets it back.
Did anyone else start laughing hysterically during the preview for next episode where Sam was busting down the door and the narrator was like “don’t axe me” or something? I thought that was the best thing ever. They kind of painted next week’s episode as a humorous one, didn’t they? Or was I hallucinating that?
All and all, I was satisfied with this episode.
I’m curious, how many expected Sam to use his powers in this one? What happened to those anyway? He doesn’t need a soul to use them. I’m assuming his body is still fueled by demon blood.
I do love how Sam tricked Castiel by using the plot to Raiders to the Lost Ark. Funny!
Crowley demise opens up the question, who will be the new King of Hell? And yes it was too easy for them to kill Crowley. It was too rush to play it like this.
Meg and Cass would make a cool item. I can see her helping Cass with his heaven woes. It would be fun, and a definite plus to this ‘soulless’ arc.
Sam’s shifting emotion/no emotion is a serious problem for the season. When they give Sam emotions like they did here, he almost seems like the old Sam. When they try the ‘cold’ approach they can’t get it to work. The need to pick a state and stay with it
They need to give the soul back or have the boys work with Sam as is, which is perfectly do-able One way or the other and they need to do it now. This flip-flopping back and forth will not work for the whole season. It cause too many inconsistencies and plot holes.
Trailer for 6.11 “Appointment in Samarra” is up on the Spoiler page for those interested
Alice, the moment Sam started chewing his wrist I said “Oh crap, are we getting his powers back? Is he demonic now?”
I was relieved when I saw the devil’s trap on the ceiling.
This episode kind of made me started enjoying Supernatural again, and now I’m torn between wanting Sam’s soul back or not. Life’s so difficult!
Sam went to Dean’s help. Does it mean he cares about Dean? I’m not sure what it means, but I liked it.
I have to confess that the picture of a wrecked Sam being nursed through his post soul recovery traumas by a caring and concerned Deam pleases me mightily. What an opportunity for some awesome brotherly drama. 😉
I actually liked this episode. It had a lot to absorb but it answered some questions too.
I liked Meg this time round, she didn’t grate on my nerves like last season. I thought her fight against the Hellhounds was done really well. Not sure I like her and Cas together, but I found it funny that she kissed him to get his sword and he kissed her back because it’s what the pizza man did.
Samuel what a piece of work he is. I understand him wanting Mary back and would choose to keep his deal with Crowley over helping Sam and Dean. Like he said Mary was his daughter and the boys are strangers to him. But to not see that Dean’s reasons for choosing Sam over Mary were exactly the same as his? Samuel is truly self-absorbed.
I was really surprised they killed off Crowley but left Meg alive. I thought for sure Meg was the one they were going to kill off. I liked Crowley’s character during last season and in Bobby’s Weekend and Family Matters, but I have to admit I found him grating on my nerves during All Dogs, so to see him go really isn’t too upsetting for me, just more surprised.
So what will happen to all the deals he made now that he’s dead, do they become null and void or do they get passed on to someone else?
Castiel was great to watch. I do feel sorry for him, with things not going well for him in heaven. It’s sad that the boys can’t help.
As for Sam changing his mind about getting his soul back, I don’t blame him. He needs to hear positive things about having one for him to want to risk bringing it back. Right now all he sees is the negative.
I feel so sorry for Dean, always stuck with the disappointments, nothing ever going his way.
I agree with Sablegreen the writing of Sam’s soullessness is all over the place. His emotions are everywhere. I believe the problem is they let the writers put their own twist or interpretation of how someone should act without a soul. There should have been a guideline to follow so they could at least be consistent.
II feel like a freaking parrot here because all i can say again is ‘So much good’. It was the consummate episode for me, really. It had everything.
Shallow bit out of the way first. I love me some practical, pondering, control taking, making a stand, worrying about his brother, Sam. ‘Nuff said.
I’m glad Crowley’s dead. It’s not that I disliked him; I was just completely underwhelmed by him. Crowley didn’t put the fear of God (or Crowley) in me. Alistair scared the crap out of me. Even Meg, who barely comes up as far as Dean’s nipples, is damn good at being creepy. Crowley just reminds me of a used car salesman, all talk but no substance. Delighted he doesn’t have Sams soul. The thought of a grubby, little bitchfeck like that having possession of something as noble as Sam’s soul turns my stomach (though Lucifer and Michael having it doesn’t exactly fill me with jollies either).
Meg? Her, I like. She’s short and has sex on the brain. She had a rough auld day though; her bluff being called by Sam, her minions killed, being tortured by Parker Lewis, had her lovely jacket ruined, killed a buttload of hellhounds and then had to be rescued by Dean Winchester, a guy she loathes (but secretly wants). Who’d be a demon??
On the other hand she got to make some angel porn with Castiel, so I guess all in all, a win.
I also like the personal barbs that seem to float around her, ‘Karma’s a bitch, bitch’ and ‘Crowley’ ‘Whore’. Those were brilliant.
An angel watching porn….. You know that list of things you never thought you’d hear yourself say, well add that to it. It was like watching a car crash. You know it’s wrong but you just can’t look away. (Does watching porn really teach you to kiss like that??)
And dude, if watching porn is something you’re not supposed to talk about, then REENACTING THE PORN is also something you don’t do. Angels these days…… Anyway Castiel, the lady in the film was a babysitter, not a demon (I’m babysitting tonight!)
Btw, Demon Meg, please to not be talking about Sam’s genitalia like that. Castiel might not be happy and it could lead to spanking.
‘Will you, boy. How?’ That would have been so much more intimidating if Castiel didn’t have to crane his neck to actually look at Sam. Castiel, Sam could squash you to the ground using just his thumb….
Btw, Dean, Castiel, your powers of observation are freaking atrocious. How did you not notice a guy who’s about 6’5â€, that you are currently talking about, standing not 6ft away from you!! Does your eyesight start deteriorating once you reach 30, by any chance?
Dean, you go out there and you sort Samuel out (that sounds much more impressive than saying ‘You go sort your grandaddy out’…) Actually, forget actually killing him (you won’t kill family, we all know that), just threaten him some more because it’s really, really cool. And do the voice while doing it. Thanks.
I think we now know how Sam spends the long, lonely nights (between trysts, obviously)… by styling his hair. It looks amazing. A definite ‘My soul might be in the Cage but the hair’s all here, baby’ day for Sam.
Sam sweetie, you might want to think about a band aid for that wee bite. Also, if you’re serious about Dr. Wesson and Professor Enchanters (somewhat alternative) therapies, you’re going to need to brush your teeth cos you got a little something stuck in them. Oh yeah, it’s your OWN FREAKING ARM!! Good God, self-cannibalism, floating intestines, angelic porn and murdered puppies. Is nothing sacred with this show?
Ok, the face-off between the two ‘Last Word’ competitors. Dean: ‘Whatever gets you throught the night’ or Baldie Demon ‘…I don’t speak little bitch’. So close!!!
Wait, did Castiel kill the shifter babies??
Ok, can someone answer a silly billys question here? Why did Sam kill Megs chrome-domed minion? How did Sam make out he was going to betray them? Was he just making a stand? Also, what does ‘Freaking ankles’ mean? (when those ghouls were trying to chow down on Dean.)
Thanks
