Support Supernatural Needs Your Help! A Dog’s Life Fundraiser in Final Stretch
It’s no secret we here at The Winchester Family Business have been big supporters of Support Supernatural’s ongoing fundraising efforts for A Dog’s Life Rescue in Los Angeles. Well, this is it. Their fundraiser officially closes at the end of this month. Lindsay and Heather have been working tirelessly for two years now to help the animals and what they’ve done has managed to make a big difference in the lives of several.
n 2009 Support Supernatural raised almost $17,000 for A Dog’s Life. This year they are at $21,300.39 with a goal still to reach of $30,000. They are relying on the generous fans to kick it in gear in this final month and really make a difference for these animals. Not just “Supernatural†fans. Animal lovers. I know there’s quite a large group out there. This has never been limited to one fandom. Go to www.SPNangelsforanimals.org for details.

Not sure about donating? I was going through the fundraiser history on SupportSupernatural.com and found this. I forgot I wrote this for them when this year’s fundraiser kicked off in January. I still mean every word today. Just remember animal awareness is not just important this month. It’s important every month, every day. Below is my little essay explaining how you can always help animals without forking over a mint.

It’s More Awareness and Nothing Else, By Alice Jester
Let me tell you why I adore Jared Padalecki. Sure, he’s one of my favorite actors, but there’s much more to the adoration than that. You see, we share a passion. Jared loves animals. I love animals. Jared promotes animal awareness. I promote animal awareness. Jared has adopted animals in need of a home. I’ve adopted animals in the need of a home. That’s where the similarities end but not the story.
When it comes to animals, Jared wears his heart on his sleeve. He personally connects with them and deeply feels the struggles they face in today’s cruel world. He wants to help. How do I know that? Easy, that’s the way us animal lovers are. I see it in the pictures of him with the two rescue dogs he adopted, Harley and Sadie. I see that same look with all pet owners. Unconditional love. These animals aren’t objects, they’re living beings and valued family members. They need us.
I also adore Lindsay and Heather because they’re passionate animal lovers too. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t be devoting so much effort to support an animal shelter a couple thousand miles away from their homes. They’ve gotten to know the dedicated people behind A Dog’s Life Animal Rescue and the difference they’re making in Los Angeles. They’re inspired by the devotion and want to help. They also found through their fundraising campaign last year that the need is much greater than the resources available and one effort isn’t going to do it. More needs to be done. Sure, the challenge is harder, but the cause is worth it.
Jared has made it known many times he wants to make the world a better place for unwanted and abused animals. Through that desire he offers a means that most others can’t give; the endorsement of the Hollywood celebrity. While that sounds like all an animal charity needs, anyone that thinks that’s not risky hasn’t noticed the current trend lately of cynicism with celebrity. When celebrities do something good now, there are those that exist just to knock them down and try to reveal a hidden agenda.
Early in his career, Jared was in an ad for PETA. He was verbally attacked at a fan convention recently for supporting that organization. In his support of A Dog’s Life and other animal organizations, some actually have accused him of using it for publicity because “that’s what celebrities are all about.†This is where the point gets lost. People forget that despite the high profile, a celebrity is just one person. Success in causes requires collective consciousness. A high profile name is just the messenger, not a guarantee of success. Jared said it best himself. “It’s more awareness and nothing else.â€
Yes, awareness. That’s really all it takes and that’s where we can help. All anyone needs to do is see the world through an animal’s eyes. There are so many ways to help other than opening a checkbook. One of the easiest ways is the Animal Rescue site. All you have to do is go to www.theanimalrescuesite.com daily, select the “Click Here It’s Free†button, and food goes to the animals. Another is donating $1 while making a purchase at Petsmart. Got old towels and blankets you don’t need? Take them to a local animal shelter. Or, just take time to pet a dog or cat next time you’re at a friend’s or neighbor’s house. It feels good and you learn with just one moment what these creatures are all about. Little things like that end up making a huge difference.
By supporting Lindsay and Heather, even just re-tweeting one of their announcements about A Dog’s Life, or sharing the word about a shelter, you’re doing your part to spread awareness. That’s just as powerful as seeing a celebrity like Jared pose with a needy dog or cat. It makes you part of an exclusive club, one that’s making the world a better place. A club that’s helping dedicated people match unwanted pet with pet owner, thus creating years of precious memories. I know I can’t imagine my life without my two dogs and two cats. I don’t want to.
So, next time you see a photo of Jared Padalecki or any other celebrity with a beloved pet, just remember, that’s you too. By showing support and spreading the word, or even taking the big leap and adopting an unwanted animal, you become a big part of this amazing effort. For that, you have our adoration.
——————————————
For this month, I’m encouraging everyone to make a donation in loving memory of a pet that has passed away that belonged to you or someone you know. I’m going to honor Fritz, a sweet little miniature pinscher that was my father-in-law’s beloved pet of over 11 years. He certainly loved coming to visit us and play with my dogs as well as sit on all our laps. Fritz had to be put down a few weeks ago because of a neck problem that’s very common with that breed. The poor dog couldn’t walk anymore. Fritz could have ended up in a shelter that many years ago but my father-in-law took him in. Even with the heartbreak of the loss, their time together was worth every minute. Fritz even helped my father-in-law through some very troubling times. That’s what animals can do for us.
What has an animal done for you? It’s a story we’d be honored to hear.
Thank you to everyone who is planning on or given Support Supernatural their backing in this dedicated crusade. I close with a personal message from Lindsay and Heather in regards to their current and future activities:
We honestly cannot believe it is December already! What a year it has been. Not only did we get a 6th season of Supernatural, but the show has done a wonderful job evolving and re-defining itself. It’s stayed fresh and fun and we cannot wait for Friday night at 9pm to arrive each week!
And my, my, my, this AWESOME fandom has been so supportive of Supernatural in 2010 in so many philanthropic ways. From helping Haiti, to supporting Misha’s amazing run, to constantly promoting and donating to A Dog’s Life Rescue, you have outdone yourselves!
We’re all about full disclosure, so it’s time to share some news with you. Our plan for 2011 is to go back to the basics. We plan to continue to help A Dog’s Life Rescue, but focus on eBay auctions and more Cafe Press designs. We also want to get back to more FUN on our site – more contributing writers, more contests, more interviews, etc.
We’ve loved fundraising this year, but we also know it’s time to take a little break from something so formal next year.
So we’re in the home stretch of our 2010 campaign! One month left. Nearly $9,000 to go to meet our goal. (And Only one more month of us bugging you for your help!)
😉
Can we do it? We are praying we can!
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for everything.
A million times thank you!
Love,
Heather & Lindsay
Personally I find causes such as these to be hugely worthy. I’ve two shelter dogs (rescue dogs) myself so organisations like A Dog’s Life are quite dear to me.
The abandoned animals issue is going to become even more problematic due to the recession; people can no longer afford to keep pets so the numbers of abandoned animals will escalate hugely. It’s going to get worse again soon because we’ll see people getting dogs for Christmas and when the reality of taking care of them sets in, they will be taken ‘for a drive’ in the car and either dumped at the side of the road or into a river. Nobody, man or beast, deserves that.
(There’s an episode of Futurama where Fry is reunited with his dog back in the year 2,000 and when Fry zips forward to the year 3,000 again, the dog just lies down in front of the Pizzeria where Fry works and waits for him. Jeez, I break down even thinking about it….)
It all starts with awareness. Awareness, awareness, awareness. We constantly run programmes in school (for parents and students) to make them aware of the costs and responsibilities involved in taking care of animals.
We try to highlight the benefits of taking in abandoned dogs rather than buying one. We arrange for class-groups of students to visit a local dog shelter and walk the dogs there and, for some of them, it was the best thing they ever did.
We raise money every year for a local Donkey Sanctuary where abandoned or mistreated donkeys are kept. (I also love donkeys so for Christmas, I ‘adopt’ a donkey for each of my nieces and nephews. Better than getting them some worthless shite they’ll end up being bored with after a few days…)
Personally, I think its nuts paying out huge money for a pet (if you’re breeding or competing with them, fair enough but otherwise……) My cousin brought a boxer about 2 years ago; cost €950. Then she realised that ‘with work’ she couldn’t take care of him (my aunt adopted Tucker so all is well there.) I remember absolutely tearing the head off her over her selfishness and stupidity (I’m quite intimidating when I want to be!)
I’m not going to tell anyone to send money to any specific charity (though obviously you should!) because in the present economic climate, some people, who would absolutely love to, genuinely can’t. However, making people aware of these types of programmes costs nothing. Walking an elderly neighbours dog costs nothing. Volunteering your time to walk or play with, or help feed abandoned animals costs nothing but, trust me, the rewards are endless.
I can’t believe Jared was attacked for his animal support!! What is wrong with this world? 🙁
I’m a huge fan of Jared and the fact that he’s an animal lover just helps it. I want to praise anyone who cares and is involved in anyway with helping abandoned animals. You people make me believe that there’s still some good in the world. As for myself, I can’t imagine my home without Penelope, my beloved cat, found on the street nearly blind. She makes my life happier. 🙂
Thank you Alice for posting this and Lindsay and Heather for their tireless work on behalf of A Dogs Life . It was through being a Jared fan I learnt of this charity. I have a adopted cat myself and wouldnt be without her. Sadly Tim the Enchanter is right more animals will pay the price for the recession or people getting animals for christmas and then not wanting them later. It is animal charities that have to often deal with the aftermath.
Alice, this is a wonderful article and I share your support (that is also Jared’s and so many others‘ support) of abused animals. I know people who say ‘why care about animals, when people are more important?’
It is a point, but one I can’t share. An animal’s love is unconditional while people tend to attach sorts of conditions to love and nearness.
I would love to have a pet or more, but I live in a rather small place and with my working hours – it would be cruel to any animal. I would love to have a dog, and I still dream of an Irish Wolfhound, to me the most gorgeous dog I’ve ever seen, a Viking of sorts… but some friends have dogs… and they are friends of mine, I dare say, too. One’s a lovely Rottweiler named Aiko, the other a Labrador named Buddy and a baby Labrador-BorderCollie Mix called Nelly. Whenever I meet them, even as I’m not their ‘alpha’, they stay at my side for such a long time, showing me how much they like me and trust me and when I leave, I feel happier than I have been before I visited them. It’s instant therapy on days I feel exhausted, unloved, low. It’s the kind of affection you get for free.
I’d like to share a story I experienced years ago with the cats of some friends. I used to do some ‘cat-sitting’ for friends during my time at university. They had three cats, one was a Siamese named Scoundrel, the most crazy and aggressive cat you can imagine. He would sneak up on you and scratch you with all five nails. Or jump at you in the shower and scratch your back and the like. I don’t know how he became that way, but he was a menace.
So, once I had a cold and stayed mostly in bed the whole day. And the only one who ‘looked after me’ was Scoundrel. Sleeping right next to me on a chair, controlling whether I was still breathing, purring all the time (I never heard him do that). He was just there, taking care of me in his way. And I used to think he hated me.
When I was better, the old status quo was restored. Live and let live. But I will remain always impressed by his generosity…
Thanks for everything. Donate, people!
Love Jas
I have always believed in supporting my local animal shelters. Particularly anything to do with rescuing horse as they are my passion.
So when I was ready to get a horse again, even though I wasn’t looking specifically, fate, karma, or whatever drew me to my current boy. He was a horse who had one hoof on the slaughter truck, they raced him into the ground, used him up and if the local ladies running a society taking Standardbreds from the track and retraining them were around, he would not be here today.
He was a washed up race horse at 6 years old and this May he turned 17 and is cheeky as can be. I have a lot of challenges with him. He’s got arthritis in one knee from multiple wipe outs at the track. I rarely ride him, but it doesn’t matter. It’s not about riding.
When I got Leader (that’s his name – he was born in Langley, btw, where Supernatural films a lot of the time) I had not owned a horse for approx 11 years. I called my best friend to tell him about my new horse and he said something to me. He said I sounded “different”. When I asked what that was supposed to mean he said “you sound whole. I wouldn’t have noticed before, but now, well, you were obviously meant to have a horse.”
I almost cried. Those of you who have animals might be able to relate better than those who don’t but for me that is the crux of it. I am a horse person and if I don’t have a horse companion I am not whole. It’s something that our animal friends give so many of us….a completeness. And to think that this piece of me that was missing might have ended up at the slaughter house.
So I give to Support Supernatural’s campaign because it’s a way for me to support my show and a cause I wholly believe in. One of the dogs A Dog’s Life saves, just might be the missing piece for some other person.
