As the title says, four weeks – we’ve made the four-week mark! Everyone, give yourselves a pat on the back…four weeks down.
I thought I’d do some periodic Hellatus Checks just to, you know, check how everyone is doing. For me this is – well, as Meg said. “Hell.†Sure, I’m enjoying watching (gorging) all of Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, Season 4 – and who of you back in 2005/2006 would have imagined there would be this many seasons to list? I know I didn’t; then again I only started watching February of 2008, so that doesn’t count.
Still, it’s been four weeks since a new episode, a whole four weeks since a new clip, a whole long four weeks since there’s been speculation on what would come next…that’s just too long. But, all is not lost, there has been quite a bit going on and likely quite a bit more than I know about especially since I know very little of what’s going on out there in TV land and the fandom at large and conventions and all that. So, I’ll ramble a bit on the little bits of stuff I do know and then hope the rest of you will fill in the blanks or add stuff you know or have heard. I’m especially hoping you will fill the rest of us in on how you’re doing whilst on this long journey in the desert called Hellatus.
First of all spoilers…thus far I’ve heard none and I’m still very up in the air about whether or not I want to spoil myself this coming season. Last season I prowled the spoilers on Spoiler TV and enjoyed the sides and the casting calls as well as the interviews. None of them bothered me and I had fun speculating. Granted, reading some of the threads on some sites drove me nuts as some people were ready to trash something before they even knew what it was, so that was annoying. I was fairly spoiled ahead of time that Dean broke the first seal – that came courtesy of a Space TV promo though so I had it coming there. I was spoiled by a script side that told me the siren would be the cop in Sex and Violence and I suppose that ruined it a little bit for me but not enough that I said wow, the episode sucks ‘cause I knew that ahead of time.
So, I don’t know what I’m going to do with spoilers. Admittedly, I’m tempted to spoil simply because it’s been a whole four weeks and nothing, nada, zip, zilch…nothing. What are your thoughts? Spoil or not spoil? How did this past season work for those of you that did spoil and how did this past season work for those of you who didn’t? I’d be interested to know. Also, if I do spoil myself, I’ll be very careful to not spoil in here thus protecting those who don’t.
Season Six? Much discussion seems to be underway (at least in the three places I’ve looked) about season six. Don’t get me wrong, if there is a season six and most especially if the quality stays high, I’m all for it; but put the cart before the horse, much? The writers have only just gotten back into the writing room, not a scene has been shot, much less episode aired for Season 5 and everyone is discussing Season 6? Hey, again, I’m cool with it as long as it does not ever jump the shark, but let’s just enjoy what we got. Do I think they could do it? Sure, why not. I never thought six foot teddy bears would show up or angels would be so awesome or that John would have another son and the storyline would work really well so yeah, I suppose so. Then again, I don’t know. How do you top Lucifer and stopping the massacre and all that stuff, really, how do you – well, on a television show that is. I don’t know. I’ll wait and see, for now I’m just counting the days (not every day though that would be too obsessive) until Season 5 starts.
Jared and Jensen confirm their contracts go for six seasons, apparently that’s with the CW so that’s not necessarily with Supernatural – that information comes to you jointly through my watching some You Tube videos of the recent Asylum convention which was held, I think, in England, and some fan writing on a thread on SupernaturalTV.
I do say this, I voted on BuddyTV’s vote thingy about whether a sixth season would be good or not with Jared and Jensen but no Eric…I said I’d watch it but it might not be as good; I’ll admit, there’s something about Eric’s genius I really like. I can and do hope that if all the writers are game – and as I do enjoy Sera and Ben and Jeremy and Julie and Cathryn and Dabb and Loflin I think that together, with Eric they could pitch two more seasons and Eric would stay [I hope] but again, this is all speculation and time will tell…as in not for probably six to eight months before we hear anything definitive. So with that in mind, I’ll go back to counting down until Season 5 premiers, that’s long enough.
Speaking of Cons, I watched some vids on You Tube and apparently Jensen had eye surgery and has a bruise (don’t worry, he said, it’ll be gone soon and likely by the time I saw the video it already is). [I had eye surgery two years ago…awesome.] Jensen has a dog, thanks to his girlfriend, and it’s not a manly dog [sorry, Jensen]. I’m no man but I love ‘real’ dogs and yes, I know all dogs are real, some are just more so but that could be fighting words so I’ll leave off there. Apparently his 15 pound cockapoo named Icarus [cool name] takes on the likes of Harley and Sadie and seems to win more often than not. Well, real dog or not, the truth is it is always the size of the fight in the dog, not the size of the dog in the fight.
As for Harley and Sadie, according to Jared Harley is big and dumb and happy and Sadie is the troublemaker…that sounds about right. Both boys looked happy and relaxed and hopefully they’re beginning to count down the days to the beginning of filming; I have no idea how they do what they do but I sure am glad they do it. I think filming starts July 2nd…think I read/heard that somewhere but I have no source to back it up. If anyone knows, fill me in. I got my little calendar all ready to start marking off the episodes as they are filmed – obsess much? [I did that last year mostly because I feared SAG would strike and thus ruin another season *did I mention I’m selfish?*, as of the writing of this and the sending to Alice for posting later in the week all votes are still arriving and the reveal of the results is not yet in *crosses fingers*]
Season 4 DVDs have been announced and sooner or later I’ll actually pre-order mine; I always do (well, always as in did it last year, the first two seasons I got at a discount and together). Apparently the beloved (at least to me) commentaries will return, on three ‘key’ episodes. Any takers on which three those will be? I’m certainly hoping for Lazarus Rising and Lucifer Rising, although unless they did it early, Kim won’t be available for his *wipes tear*. The ever present gag reel will be along as well as featurettes on the mythology and unaired scenes…love those.
Speaking of unaired scenes, there is a thread on SupernaturalTV that I enjoy checking out now and again, actually two. One is where someone posts clips from something called Rabid Rabbit, or something like that *clunks head* it’s been awhile since I’ve been there for that one. The other is for Behind-the-scenes pics which has loads of picks from…you guessed it, behind-the-scenes and it is updated fairly regularly. It’s cool to see the markers for the actors and the crew and how close everything is and how very many people are around the actors. Check them out, they’re kinda fun.
Along those same lines Jensen talked about a photo of him in some magazine, Heat. Apparently it’s a shirtless photo and I think I remember seeing that pic and was afraid it would show up in an upcoming episode (saw it a few months ago). The reason for my fear, no tattoo. After all their care in Lazarus Rising and Monster at the end of This Story, I thought the makeup crew had really blown it…not to worry though, apparently it was an unauthorized photo that the on-set photographer took and somehow it got out and into a mag…Jensen’s comments on the mag were quite funny. Someone explained to him that the mag was kind of like ‘People’ and he said, oh, so crap. Yeah, Jensen, that’s right.
Now that I’ve rambled on about much of nothing I’ll post a few parting thoughts and turn it over to you all…I’m looking for fanfic, I’m a bit desperate. Anyone writing any? Anyone reading any that’s really good? Gaelicspirit is a favorite of mine and I checked her journal, she had one for The Young Riders…wow, that was on 20 years ago. That just kills me. I never watched it when it was on, too busy with college *dates self again* but somehow it just seems odd to think that 1989 was 20 years ago…but that’s just a fact. Anyway, I read that and enjoyed it and am now checking for some Young Riders stuff…you know, to pass the time.
I haven’t yet done the ‘time honored’ thing of standing at the magazine rack and browsing *coughs, reading* the May SPN magazine…it’s on my too do list [like pre-ordering Season 4] I’m enjoying my DVDs and starting to think about what I’m going to do this fall when Season 5 starts and I start recording them again. I have trouble with my DVR in that the discs will stop recording for no reason and then tell me it’s full or not formatted or whatever…this happened halfway through Lucifer Rising, twice! I about died. Thankfully Alice posted the missing scene and I can get the flavor between the upstairs and the downstairs…still, too much pressure so I’ll have to fix that soon.
So now it’s your turn, how is your Hellatus? Are you obsessing, have you gone on a Supernatural fast for a while, since absence makes the heart grow fonder? What are you reading? Going to a con? Been to a con? Hoping to go to a con? Swearing you’ll never ever in your whole life go to a con?
Share the news, share the tips…we’re about a quarter of the way through; we will make it.
Hey Elle2,
I’m actually counting down to the Vancouver Con, of which I have a gold pass for the weekend. I’ve never gone to anything like this before – and by myself no less!!! I wish I had buckets of money. They have VIP Backstage passes up for grabs as well as doing both set and location tours. Course all that costs extra. SIGH.
Regarding the speculation on Season 6. Once S5 starts and they see how the fans react, they may “rein” in the season the way they did with S4 once the realized that S5 was a possibility. That way they could span the hunt and stop of Lucifer over two seasons. Or they could opt to “save Sam” from his demon blood for one season and stop Lucifer the next. There are possibilities if they choose to go to 6.
As for S6 without Kripke. I reserve judgment. I can’t tell the future. It’s possible that someone else could take over Eric’s job and the show could be awesome, or it could suck big time, or it could be just mediocre. So yea, I’ll watch whether Kripke is on board or not, but I’ll save my rating once I see an actual S6 episode.
S4 commentaries? YEA!!! I really missed those from S3.
Oh, yes, Asylum was in England and Jensen has a cockapoo? Not a dog I would have guessed he would end up with. I’m a medium to big dog person myself having a Boarder Collie and a Lab Rottie cross but, the way you tell it, seems he didn’t make the choice himself. Still, we rescued the Lab Rottie and he was not a breed we would have chosen, but he’s an awesome dog, so, you never know what you are going to get.
Four weeks down, potentially 12 weeks to go……SIGH.
Hi, Tigershire,
Vancouver Con eh???? Do I hear guest postings? (Alice, you must, must, must get her to post on that!)
I’m with you all the way on the whole S6 or not thing…wait and see. I’mn hopeful the writers are holed up doing their writing thing and simply ignoring everyone else around them and focusing on putting out an awesome season that they’re both proud and excited about.
I’ve got a German shepherd and only ever want another one when his time with me is gone (*sniff, not yet though please*). Seems Jensen’s girl loved the dog and ‘had’ to have it, something he knew that he would end up taking care of…the story is quite cute and Jensen gets into telling it so if anyone wants to see, go to the supernaturalwiki site and check out the Asylum Con links and browse through the video clips, somone posted it titled Jensen and his dog (or somehting like that) it’s several minutes and pretty funny.
Vancouver Con is in August? Or September? I’ll be rooting for you to have a fantastic time. Enjoy yourself (and report back!) 😎
The Vancouver Con is the last weekend in August – 28, 29 & 30. I’m looking forward to meeting folks I’ve only met online, like the ladies from Support Supernatural. I’ve offered to be taxi service for them from the airport since I’ll be going over on the Thursday.
And I will do my best to capture what I can for a review. Since I’ve never done anything like this before, don’t count on it being at all coherent. My mind may be goo by the end of it all. GRIN.
Hi Elle2!
Season 4 is still airing here in Portugal, so I still have my weakly dose of Winchester 😀 , I’m not yet on hellatus time. And besides that I’m coming here every day, I’m reading some fan fic over supernaturalville and I’m going over (again) my season 1,2 and 3 cd’s. As for season 4 cd here in Europe the release date is November 1st (so not fair :-), so I’m thinking about order the seasons companions first.
As for season 6 I think I’m gonna wait and see, for now I prefer to focus on season 5. Con’s???? What’s that? 😉 There’s nothing of that here in Portugal and to go were that happens (even if it’s up there in England)is way of the budget…
I’ve had no idea of what a cockapoo dog was so I googled it for some pictures and now I know! I think the dog is adorable but to be honest not the kind of dog I picture Jensen with (let’s be honest that’s a girl kinda dog).
Oh, and Tigershire I’ll be waiting to for those con reports (and don’t worry about make it sound coherent, we understand).
And now I’m gonna check those Asylum Con links. See ya…
Hi Elle2,
I can’t believe it’s already been 4 weeks since the ‘can’t-believe-they-left-us-hanging-there’ finale.
I haven’t made up my mind about spoilers either. I admit, I did read spoilers last year, but they weren’t as detailed as yours – I didn’t know the siren was a cop (until about 5 seconds after we met him anyways) or that Dean broke the first seal (though I suspected). I guess I’m make that decision when the time comes. I’ve never gone spoiler-free before, so it could be an interesting experiment.
You Americans are soooo lucky to be able to pre-order your season 4 DVDs already. Amazon.ca (Canada) doesn’t have them up yet for some bizzare reason. I will definately pre-order, as I always do and it drives me nuts that I can’t do it yet even though I know others can.
I have to confess a dirty secret: not only do I read the SPN Magazines, I *buy* them! Only recently that I started buying them – they are my only guilty pleasure splurge though! (Maybe I’ll write interview/article summaries of the mags somewhere so I can pretend I’m buying them for the greater good – philanthropy is a tax write-off, isn’t it?).
I also watch the Con videos – I laughed so hard at the story of Jensen’s dog and how he got it. There is also a video of the Con with Misha on stage and Jared crashes it, later bringing out angel wings and putting them on Misha – it was funny. [Thank goodness for Youtube! What did we do before it was born?!?]
RE: filming date, Alice confirmed that it was July 1st, earlier than before, because the Vancouver Olympics will require them to shut down for a few weeks in February. I remember reading an interview and they said all the hotel rooms, etc. were already booked, so they would have nowhere to house guest stars.
Although I thought Hellatus would pass slowly, my summer has quickly become jam-packed (bus vs. car, moving, etc.) and is flying by!
Hi, Tigershire, Dany and Elle
Tigershire, cool that you’re going to meet some people you’ve only ever ‘chatted’ with, have fun and it’s only 11 weeks away (ooh, that sounds bad!) Gooey thoughts are more than acceptable!
Dany, Cool that you’re checking us out from Portugal and that you’re still enjoying S4…what episode are you up to? As for the cockapoo, it was his girlfriend’s surprise and he just knew he’d end up taking care of it…he called it a ‘stuffed animal’ when he first saw it. But, like any dog, sounds like it’s kinda stolen a part of his heart…awwwwww
You’re likely to get the Season 4 DVDs before the Season 4 companion, the S3 companion came out in March of this year (S4 was already 2/3 of the way aired) so likely the companion will come out sometime next year. November 1st isn’t too bad…especially since you’re still enjoying the first run eppies. Still, you seem to be well caught up, do you watch the eps on the internet somewhere?
Elle, if it makes you feel better, although I can pre-order mine, I havent’. I’ll stand in solidarity with you tho, sis’ and wait for yours to become orderable (is that a word?) Just let me know…unless it takes too long ’cause if it gets to be August 30th and you’re still not able…I’m running to order mine, sorry, I’m for solidarity, not lunacy! 😆
I had been buying the mags and enjoying them but lately got out of the habit and read one in the bookstore (Borders — a little free advertising to make up for my lack of purchase) and I purchased the March one but I still haven’t peeked at the May one…I’m waiting until Hellatus really gets to me and then I can have my ‘fix’…maybe tomorrow!
Hellatus is buzzing right along, I’m blessed with a very busy work schedule (and being self-employed, it’s really a blessing) and plus with trying to create slightly coherent articles to feed all our rabid appetites, it helps a lot. Tonight I’ll be finalizing my S2 Road so Far (quite incoherent and veeeeerrrry long) and then I’m off to enjoy some vids…hmm, which one, which one.
I’m very rigidly anti-spoiler during the regular TV season. I don’t really want to know anything about upcoming episodes, except perhaps the preview aired the week before.
However, I am much more relaxed during the summer hiatuses. I like to hear about the general big picture they have planned, so I’ve been looking for that sort of information lately.
Also, I think I got spoiled in the BSG fandom by Ron Moore being so willing to talk about what he was planning and what worked and what didn’t. I’ve been hoping to hear something of the sort from Kripke about S4. S4 got so much positive media attention and was so risky with some of its character arcs that I have been hoping to see an in-depth interview about it with Kripke, but no such luck.
Hi, Antoinette,
So far (and that’s probably because I have yet to be tempted by an sides) I’m going for the general, big picture sorta thing for the next season…of which I just read an interview online on the EW site (actually it’s on Supernaturaltv site in the forum section under the heading of spoilery articles) where he gave a general, extremely general, pointer for S5 as a whole and Sam…cool. So, happily that satisfies me for now. Per my promise, that’s all the info I can give.
We’ll see how I do in the next couple of weeks when the first sides start to appear. I’m really hoping to discipline myself though and just stick to general interviews from the writers and the cast and then whatever video clips etc are aired. The sides are fine but really…I can have some self-control, right? 😕
Thanks for your insights…I’ll let you know.
I’ve been bugging Warner Brothers and The CW with interview requests ever since season four ended. I can confirm that everyone involved with the show right now is on radio silence because they are busy prepping for season five. No interviews. That’ll likely change once the comic con happens at the end of July. Spoilers however will start leaking in a week or two when the sides come out.
There’s a spoiler already out…it’s called a casting call. So I guess I’m already slightly spoiled but I can rationalize that a casting call is simply that…a call to cast a part…not the same as reading a side…Right??? (I’m sooooooo weak!) All right…so I won’t read sides but everything else is fair game. I mean, really, what’s to spoil in a casting call?
:roll:: 😕
Oh, well if we’re plugging fanfics, fluffy2001 (we’re VERY close 😀 ) has an interesting take on what could happen with Sam detoxing again after “Lucifer Rising” and the impact on Dean.
Thanks for the recs. I hope I’ll have a chance to check them out next week.
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5109598/1/The_Blind_Side_of_Life
Hey Elle – what part of the Great White North are you from? I’m from Victoria BC which is about 4 hours (including a ferry ride cause we’re on an island) from Vancouver.
So close and yet….
Even if S4 was available for pre-order here in Canada I wouldn’t because the local Future Shop (kind of like Best Buy) usually has it at a better price than even Amazon or Chapters.
I have a subscription to the Supernatural Mag. I have every issue. And all the comics, and novels, and companion books, and other books (ie John’s Journal).
I might have to start re-reading them. However, I do work full time and am going to school part time so that is helping pass the time. GRIN.
Oh Elle2, considering how Kripke does casting calls for demons when he wants angels means that checking it out doesn’t necessarily mean you have any idea of what’s coming!
Elle2 – I appreciate the solidarity and sacrifice! (I completely understand that it’s non-applicable after August 30 😉 ). Usually, we Canucks are in time with the American release dates (at least in my experience), so this is very odd to me.
Tigershire, I’m not nearly as close to the boys as you are – I’m in Kitchener, Ontario – about an hour outside Toronto. If I wasn’t a student also, I would probably be able to afford a trip to the Vacouver Con. (If only things didn’t cost money!)
Did you get the model Impala with season three at Future Shop? None of our Best Buy’s or Future Shops had them here, which made me very sad. I’m glad someone else buys the magazines (and other SPN products: I am planning to re-read the journal this summer also), it makes me feel less guilty.
Elle,
Ontario – what are you still doing up at this hour! GRIN I have rellies in TO.
Sometimes this country is just way too big. As for needing money – I know! All the cool stuff they are offering up for the Van Con – set tours, location tours, the chance to get your photo with the Impala! VIP backstage passes!!! All over and above the gold pass of course. SIGH.
I did not get the model Impala – I looked but our Future Shops (we don’t actually have a Best Buy in Victoria yet, rumour is one is coming) never got those ones in! I so would have gotten it. 🙁
My reading project will be Jim Beaver’s book. I know it’s going to be a very hard read for me because of my mom but I read his MySpace Blog posts and I just really like the way Jim talks.
And if for some reason you find yourself able to come out, let me know and I’ll sneak you into my room! LAUGH!
Tigershire,
I’m actually just heading to be right now. My friends laugh at me because I’m a night owl. I’m the one who gets the 3 a.m. phone call when they can’t sleep and need to talk b/c they know chances are pretty good I’ll be awake. Now, call me before noon on a weekend and you’re on your own.
BC is definately on my list of places to visit….eventually….after I win the lottery and/or marry rich. Actually, next summer is sort of my last hurrah before *gulp* law school so I am going to really, really, really try to get to Vancouver Con if possible. If only they would come to Toronto.
I have Jim Beaver’s book on my reading list too (it’s a long, long list!).
I’ll let you know if we need sneaking plans in the works, hehe.
Hi Elle2!
Just to say that I’m well caught up on season 4 because I already saw the all season, I usually get the eps on the internet (I’ve got all the episodes on the my computer disk) on friday and see it during the weekend (my computer and my internet connection are still at my parents house so that’s why I don’t see it earlier). Last ep aired here was Wishful Thinking (the bear :D).
I forgot to tell you that I don’t mind spoilers, in fact I love spoilers (ya crazy I now) b/c the better/bigger the spoiler I just now the ep will be 10 times better so the only thing spoilers do for me is make me eager to see the show, so please share with me all that you have (pretty please!?)
See ya…
(Alice if you really decide to read the Brotherhood fan fic be warned that is extremely addictive, Ridley and Tidia are really good writers and have a very active imagination, they got me hooked with the first chapters)
Haven, Tigershire, Elle, Dany and Alice
Hello all!
Haven, thanks for the vote of support for my rambles, I enjoy some other’s streams of consciousness so I’m glad you don’t mind mine. 😎
Elle, I’m solid all the way there, sister. You let me know when you can order…and I’m right there with you (offer expires on August 30th — insert announcer’s voice)
Thanks for all the fanfic addresses, I’ve copied them and will locate and start reading. I think Tidia is a name I recognize as having written some Mag 7 stuff in the past (and she was quite good) I used to write Mag 7 and belonged to a fabulous, small, group that supported authors and ran a slew of activities, even having quarterly celebrations filled with games and stories and contests and tons of stuff. Very busy and fun but ultimately I could no longer participate as work became too overwhelming so I said adieu…I miss them a lot though, a great group of gals and a very safe and fun place. But now I’ve found a home here and am quite happy as well. 😀
Dany, I’ll tell you that since I’ve already read an interview that Jensen gave in which he speculated some broad brush ideas for the upcoming season and read a casting call (but not a side) I’ve decided that interviews and casting calls (not sides) and any clips that the CW or WB or whoever releases in the upcoming months will be okay…but this year I’ll skip the sides. Sides were fun and didn’t do anything but get me more psyched for the episode (just like you) so there’s my line. 😉
If someone oops and spoils me further it won’t bother me but I still won’t put anything I learn here unless I title the article as full of spoilers so that anyone who is stronger, more dedicated or simply of a different mindset to how they approach the show doesn’t get anything ruined by what I write.
Awesome discussion all and I live in New York State, (near Albany) so Toronto isn’t thaaaaaaattttt far away
Hey guys…I’ve been really busy lately, and it’s great to be back here. I missed you guys
I’m definitely very anti-spoiler, but it’s quite difficult for me to avoid them because I spend a lot of time floating around the fandom. Supernatural aired only up to season 2 here in Malaysia…and then completely disappeared! I have to watch new episodes online..and, if I don’t watch soon after it airs in the US, I will end up somehow catching a few spoilers here and there…
Well Elle and Elle2, here’s how this could work. Elle travels up to Ontario and Elle2 packs her in her suitcase so that it only costs for one passenger to fly out to Vancouver and then I sneak you both into my hotel room for the Con.
Sound like a plan???? GRIN
For anyone looking for a con close to Toronto or New York, on July 9, 10, 11, 2010 Creation is having a con in Parsipanny, NJ. No confirmed guests yet, but they sold tickets at the NJ con this year as a consolation for Jared cancelling. I think we all should plan to be there.
Tigershire and Welcome back, Narcissus,
You have been suspiciously absent 😯
glad you’re back. Happy reading and catching up.
As for spoilers…they don’t bother me ’cause I’m a firm believer in waiting to see how the ‘whole’ episode plays out but this year I’ll avoid the sides as they can give away quite a bit. So I’ll handle everything else.
Glad you can catch the eps online so you don’t miss it altogether. The ‘net can be quite awesome.
Tigershire…sounds like a plan. I’ll lose a few more pounds and practice the fetal position to fit into the suitcase!
Uhhh… okay, call me a noob or whatever you will, but what exactly are sides? I tried for a wikipedia answer and all i’m getting is “scripts”. Are sides scripts? Cause if so, I will definitely be avoiding them like the plague. I would much rather guestimate what will happen on the show (while on the edge of my seat, anxiously wringing my hands of course.)
But you’ve got my curiousity peaked about the whole Con thing. I had never before considered going to one. Of course :laughs: that was before I started watching Supernatural… . I may have to check out the one in NJ as I’m not to far away in WV.
Hi, Mae,
Yeah, ‘sides’ are partials of a script. Where the term comes from I have no idea and I learned about them last year as I started reading them. SpoilerTV will post them as some fans either subscribe to wherever and receive them or they get them from somwhere else, I have no idea (vague, aren’t I) and these sides contain dialogue…actual dialogue for a scene. Usually the sides go up to help cast a certain part…last year there were sides up for Castiel (although they altered some bits trying to hide that it was Dean and also hiding that it was an angel)
During Criss Angel…they had sides up for each of the three magicians and much of the dialogue and even directions to explain what was going on were included (such as bits about the rope coming down to strangle Dean and him choking as he told Sam to go after them) and stuff like that.
They can be fun but they also can give away quite a bit so while for me, this season, casting calls simply tell me a rough idea of a particular part they may be casting (as in last season’s casting call for Zachariah the description was, male, executive type who can get things done, has supernatural abilities, something to that effect) and casting calls give you an idea of whether a character is recurring or one-time only and they usually also give you when filming is going to occur so I can know what episode number there on.
I liked having that info (when filming and what episode) last year ’cause I worried over another strike-shortened season, but this year that’s not a worry so I don’t really care. So that’s the difference. Casting sides may give a hint of a kind of character (waitress, mom, frightened guy with strange habits) but they don’t give away much else…never saw the casting call for the six-foot depressed, beer swilling suicidal teddy bear. 😆
So, this conversation got me thinking and I did a quick search on “What are script sides?” and got this…
“Sides are cut down versions of the script, that represent the material that is being shot that day. The other scenes will be xxx’d out. They’re small enough to fit into your pocket, and the crew usually gets a copy as well as the cast so they know what’s going on that day. Usually they are delivered by a PA along with the callsheets.”
So there you go. GRIN
Oops, I did something wrong. A bit of my message is missing.
I had meant to say I got this from Yahoo Answers.
Elle,
Thank you for another comfort article during the hellatus; it helps keeps me sane during the FOUR MONTHS OF, well, HELL.
I haven’t posted in here before, but I felt the need to come out of the woodwork this time.
When it comes to spoilers, I bury my head in the sand. As curious as I am about what’s coming, I truly believe that if I know beforehand, it takes away some of the enjoyment when I’m watching. I like to be surprised while I’m watching the episode. Those shocking moments (Sam drinking Ruby’s blood), ‘oh no’ moments (Dean finding out that he broke the first seal), and ‘Yeah!’ moments (Sam and Dean working together to kill Ruby) are so much better if I don’t already know about them. But each to their own, right?
While I was reading your article, I was nodding at something you wrote. The Season Six talk. As soon as I heard/read that Jensen and Jared are signed on for S6, I remained sitting while everyone else was jumping out of their chair. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see a sixth season (just like every fan), but I think we’re all getting a little ahead of ourselves at the moment. The network has to pick it up first. The success of S4 would suggest that S5 will be just as riveting, which would bode well for #6, but I don’t like to get my hopes up too soon. Just call me an optimistic realist. Another thing I am little concerned (maybe that’s too strong a word) about is whether Jensen and Jared actually want to return for S6. I’d like to think they’d be happy to return to Dean and Sam, but 6 years is a long time to be doing one thing for 9 months of the year.
That’s just my take on it.
Keep the articles coming. We’re relying on you.
Tigershire – I like the way you think! Sounds like a plan to me! It would be kind of cool if we could all plan to meet at a con someday!
Alice – good to know about that NJ con next July thanks for the information, I am making note of the dates!
Hi, Det_coverdale,
Thanks for coming out of the woodwork and posting…it’s great to get feedback from those ‘lurkers’ As a longtime lurker myself on other sites, I get the desire to come, soak in and head back out but it’s great to hear that these articles are helping.
I agree a lot about what you said regarding S6…it seems that this has stirred up quite a debate in some places and people seem to forget that S5 filming hasn’t even begun. I say enjoy what you got and let tomorrow worry about itself.
I posted a note, on another site, when the SAG contract was ratified and it’s amazing that someone posted that it was great news for S5 but that S6 was likely to go the way of S3 with a massive strike. Whoa, back the pony cart up (I actually jotted a follow-up to note that IF there is a S6, it actually films from 2010 to 2011 and IF there is a strike, it won’t occur until 2011 when S6 [if there is one] is done filming…talk about the cart ahead of the horse.
Sides didn’t spoil Sam and Dean killing Ruby, I had no idea that was coming but really, really, really hoped and I had no idea Sam was drinking Ruby’s blood although it was hyped out in the fandom from somewhere.
Usually the only sides that get posted (that I see) are those used to cast new roles, once roles like Castiel, Ruby, Anna, Zachariah and the like are cast, there’s nothing to read, at least not in the one place I got them from. And, like I said, I’m not planning to go there this year as I want to just enjoy and not obsess…plus there’s all this writing to be done.
I’m hopeful that if S5 is as good as S4 because the creative team has the energy and vision to keep it creative that there will be a S6. Truthfully, I’m hoping EK is there for it and that it doesn’t go the way of so many other shows that have awesome creative energy but go way past their storyline. I agree with EK, sometimes you got to just go out when you’re on top. But I’m not paying a lot of attention to it, I’ll just note it now and again if there’s another to formulate a sentence or two of something new. I prefer to just focus on what I’ve got and look forward to S5 when it arrives.
Glad you’re enjoying the site and we’ll keep those articles coming.
Things aren’t too grim here in England as season 4 is still going on proper TV so Hellatus Angst hasn’t really hit me yet … Plus my discs finally came ( YAY!! ) and I have the long-lost delights of seasons 1 and 2 to roll around in so I shouldn’t hit rock bottom for a week or so yet …
I used to be a bit of a spoiler-fiend, I’d spend hours and hours rummaging around trying to pick up hints and snippets about the shape of things to come but all it did in the end was give me a too-much-screen pain in the brain and a burning desire to go and watch some proper episodes. Also all the 20 pages of overwrought chuntering about a 20 word spoiler business was doing my head in so I stopped. It turned out to be a bit of a revelation, I really enjoyed not having a clue what was coming! So now I don’t bother looking but like a reformed smoker sniffing other peoples ciggies I don’t mind at all if someone drops a hint or two ( or three, or four … 😆 )
I feel rather the same about season 6. I’ll definitely watch … Unless season 5 turns out to be total pants ( which we know it won’t be … ) But I’ll wait until then to have an opinion. After all, I thought the Angels were Absolutly-The-Worst-Idea-Ever-Bar-None and look how that turned out! 😆
Regarding small yapper-type dogs, I know it’s wrong but I can’t help feeling that any dog you can pick up with one hand is actually some kind of rodent …
Suze – checked ITV’s tv guide and us brits have 4 yes FOUR episodes of SPN airing this week – yay! as well as WTLB and Lucifer Rising we have playthings and nightshifter! Yay for ITV! (never thought i’d say that).
I used to be addicted to spoliers butI’m trying to wean myself off them and clips to because their either misleading or for me take away something from the show, i watch he episode and think “oh i’ve seen this already” – saying that mind, the chances I cave are huge!
On the dogs debate I like a medium sized mongrel myself none of your pedigree stuff just a big bundle of fur you can cuddle and chase round the park! – oh now i want a dog! but can’t have one 🙁
Hi, Suze and Bethany,
I used to spend forever reading people’s thoughts/comments on spoilers and it usually just got me angry (and gave me the computer eye squinty thing). I prefer to catch a nugget here or there (now at least that’s the plan) especially if the writers or producers are dropping it because they’re having fun dropping it so I like to indulge them — they work so hard.
Dogs picked up by one hand are rodents– too funny, and don’t let my kitty near them…so far his count on chipmunks is three, the chipmunks — yeah, zero. 👿
As for dogs, I like most kinds (at least that don’t yap, yap, yap incessantly) Admittedly I’m into GSD, always had them and likely always will, so intelligent and loyal and very needy at times too…best buds. But I’ve had a Heinz 57 (as we call mixed breeds conversationally in the U.S.) and he was a great dog!
Off to go cuddle my pup
Typically daft ITV programming … No SPN for an age and an age then fout episodes at once! ( a bit like night buses ) Not complaining though, it’s going to be a long dry summer …
We’ve got two dogs at the moment, a black Lab and a huge indederminate object who looks like a hyena and we think is some sort of Lurcher/ Sheep hybrid … Both lovely in their own ways and quite terrified of the cat. Wusses …:
