Road Trip! What’s on Your Supernatural Mix Tape?
Perhaps the term “mix tape” is a bit outdated, since Dean was spotted in season nine actually using his phone as an MP3 player, but we know a cassette tape player exists in the Impala so imagine this scenario. It’s time for a drive to another state, and you need the right selection of twenty to thirty songs to make the trip the blazing classic rock jam fest that all journey’s in a bitchin’ classic vehicle should be. So, what makes your list?
There aren’t a lot of rules here. The songs don’t have to be in “Supernatural,” just fit the overall mood. After all, our playlists don’t involve very expensive copyrights, so Led Zeppelin is fair game. Heck, throw in Johann Sebastian Bach for all I care. Orders can be random, or they can involve some sort of forethought and ideal blend. It’s your list dammit, who am I to dictate?
I figured it would be wrong for me to issue a challenge without going through the exercise myself, so here goes. My car maybe a modern day electric vehicle, but the sound system is wicked!
Gimme Shelter – The Rolling Stones (It’s a travesty this song hasn’t been on Supernatural yet!)
Hells Bells – AC/DC
Hey Man Nice Shot – Filter
We’re An American Band – Grand Funk Railroad
Smoke on the Water – Deep Purple
Fight the Good Fight – Triumph (This band gave one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen in my life)
Renegade – Styx
Heaven and Hell – Black Sabbath (number one on my ‘Must be on Supernatural’ list)
What is and What Should Never Be – Led Zeppelin
House of the Rising Son – The Animals
Bad Company – Bad Company
Wanted Dead or Alive – Bon Jovi
Silent Lucidity – Queensryche
Can’t Find My Way Back Home – Blind Faith
Fell on Black Days – Soundgarden
For Those About to Rock – We Salute You, AC/DC
Highway Star – Deep Purple
Born to be Wild – Steppenwolf
Stranglehold – Ted Nugent
Blaze of Glory – Jon Bon Jovi (another should have been on this show LONG before now)
Heat of The Moment – Asia (Dude, it’s Asia!)
Oops, I Did It Again – Britney Spears (for Castiel, hey I need a laugh at this point)
Miracles – The Jefferson Starship (because I REALLY want to laugh hard at this point)
All Out of Love – Air Supply (closet confession, I like this song too Dean)
Sympathy for The Devil – The Rolling Stones (back to the real tunes)
Black Dog – Led Zeppelin
Pride, In the Name of Love – U2
Love, Reign O’er Me – The Who
Carry On Wayward Son – Kansas (Duh, requirement!)
Yes, this playlist goest through a lot of tweaking from time to time, but it’s been one I’ve had around for a while. So what’s on your list? Time for the audience participation part of our program.
My favorite song is Thunder Struck for one that has been used and if they could have afforded it Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here for when either brother was in hell (but I think it fit Sam the best). Just went through another playlist….I have to include Simple Man, Knockin’ on Heavens Door (Houses of the Holy and Dark Side of the Moon), Goodbye Stranger, Famous Final Scene….and I’ll probably think of others to add.
I would imagine that the Impala had an 8-track! Maybe John updated it to cassette in the 70’s.
I love so many of those songs but for music queues my fav’s are Renegade (because the set up was so perfect) and Silent Lucidity. I can’t hear that song in the same way anymore.
I had always wondered why though, that Rush’s Freewill was never used, particularly in season 5.I’ve put the chorus below but all the lyrics are equally prophetic when it comes to our show.
Chorus:
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that’s clear
I will choose freewill
some songs that always make me think of jared/Jensen or sam/dean or both:
brotherly love (keith whitley/earl Thomas)
bridge over troubled waters (both sam/dean , jared/Jensen song)
promise of a lifetime(cutlass)
you’re a friend of mine (Jackson brown/Clarence Clemens) (jared/Jensen song)
thank you for being a friend (jared/Jensen song)
you’ve got a friend (jared/Jensen song)
stand by me
be strong
I won’t let go by rascal flats…..so totally sam/dean and jared/Jensen….cry every time I hear it…i’m such a wuss:D
how can this happen to me
you’re just too good to be true by Frankie valli pretty much sums up my feelings for the boys….especially jared. 😀
for some reason, I can totally see sam/dean and jared/Jensen drinking in bar listening to red solo cup with a grin on their faces:D
those are just a couple of songs that every time I hear them, I think of the boys. 🙂
oh and every time I hear God Bless Texas I think of the boys ….and I give a big amen as well;):D
I make a spn cd after every season, taping all the songs they use….these are some of the songs I have at the end of ea. disc as extra bonus tracks that make me think of the boys.
My two favorite music cues of the whole series were of course the Renegade scene, so great, and the entrance of Death with Oh Death which never fails to awe me and it sets up the character so ominously. I do enjoy most of the music they use but the classic rock of the earlier seasons was so right for the tone of the show. Sorry not exactly a playlist. My favorite song at the moment which says Supernatural and Sam and Dean (but isn’t in the show) to me is Just Promise Me We’ll Be Alright by Mumford and Sons. There is a SPN music video out there that uses that and it just kills me every time I view it. The words are so beautiful.
Ooooh, I agree! Loved that version of “Oh Death” with him sloooooowly gliding into the frame in his unhurried way and with a twitch felling the guy who every so slightly bumps into him. I heard that the song, originally attributed to Ralph Stanley (probably not written by him but is an old folk tune; he was known for recording these) was re-recorded by one of the crew who sings too. Not sure if that’s for realz, but kind of cool if true. Oh and that white Caddie…..hmmmm. 🙂
I so agree with you on JPMWBA Mumford and Sons as you know. It is a very powerful song and video. I’ll bet it would be ok to post it here. 😉
My Supernatural iTunes list includes 183 songs, from Back in Black to Can’t Find My Way Home, followed by Americana from the soundtrack, which makes me cry every time.
Favourites are Bad Moon Rising, Don’t Fear the Reaper, Oh Death, Lonely is the Night, Renegade, Wanted Dead or Alive, Silent Lucidity, Eye of the Tiger, Enter Sandman, She Brings Me Love, Rock of Ages, The Famous Final Scene, You Shook Me All Night Long, Born on the Bayou, Goodbye Stranger, and of course, Carry on My Wayward Son etc. etc.
Sooooo many lovely songs to remind me of my show!
Sorry to post this here but this is the video and song Leah was talking about. It just fits the brothers perfectly….

You’ve all covered some really great ones! I’ll offer three songs that I would love to hear on the show at some point: Molly Hatchet’s Flirtin’ With Disaster and The Doors’ The End and Strange Days.
Oh, I just thought of another one! Johnny Cash’s version of the NIN song Hurt.
