Supernatural’s Top Ten Funniest Scenes – #2
#2 – Alien Slow Dance – “Tall Tales”
There are two scenes in the history of Supernatural (and network television actually) that made me laugh so hard I thought I was going to go to the emergency room because I was convinced I ruptured a hernia. Those two scenes are the top two of this list.
The first came during our multiple week marathon of watching seasons one and two for the first time on DVD. Sure, “Tall Tales” up to this point was very amusing. I absolutely loved the “blah, blah, blah” when both brothers shared their differing interpretations of their night in the bar. I laughed over the comment on Darwinism and the constant brotherly bickering. I even found alien abduction funny. But none of that prepared me for this supposedly simple interrogation scene.
Sam and Dean talk to the abductee in the bar, fully intending to hear him out. After all, the kid had a run in with aliens. Which they know don’t exist. I like Sam and Dean wondered what kind of hallucinogen this kid was on. As with many items on this list, great comedy is all about well timed non-verbal reaction. Once again, it doesn’t get any better than this.
As soon as the word “probing” is mentioned, the usually empathetic Sam fights off laughter, scratching his head, trying to be casual. Dean gives an incredulous and very disturbed stare, only able to deadpan “Yikes.” Then Dean delivers the setup; “How can it any get worse? Some alien made you his bitch?” The look on Dean’s face as he makes that joke and then realizes he nailed it on the head is too funny for words. Also too freaking hysterical for words, the punchline.
Music has always been a catalyst for perfect storytelling in this show, and just like Asia’s “Heat of The Moment,” this scene loses all hope without Chris Deburgh’s “Lady in Red” wailing over the speakers. On the alien mothership. With lowered lighting, strobe lights and stars twinkling like it’s the high school prom. With the alien clutching real tight onto said abductee’s waist and gazing at him lovingly with those oversized black eyes. Considering this episode was written by a X-files alum (John Shiban), I wonder if Mulder and Scully would have reacted any more hysterically than Sam and Dean. I doubt it, for neither of them could twist their face from laughing to sad in a split second quite the way Sammy did, or watch Dean wrestle with something to say after that.
I still have trouble catching my breath when watching this scene, and I still laugh about it in random places when my twisted sense of humor flashes it in my mind. The trickster even got kudos from Dean for that prank. I must agree.

I think my favourite piece of that is “again and again and again and then one more time.”
the way it was delivered, that “one more time”. I dunno, it just strikes my funny bone.
I killed myself laughing at that one the first time and it never gets old. I don’t wait for the music to start laughing.
