#8 – A Very Special Torture Scene, “A Very Supernatural Christmas”
Anyone that’s read my stuff knows how much I love dark humor. This is dark with a capital D. After all, it is a gruesome torture scene. At Christmas. In a pristine suburban house owned by Pagan Gods disguised as Ozzie and Harriet that looks like a holiday store threw up on it. A Merry Christmas indeed.
Two things push this scene from disturbing to howlingly funny. First is the outrageous dialogue, pulling out all sorts of long gone phrases like “sweet Peter on popsicle stick” and “fudge.” Second are the actors themselves, Spencer Garrett and Merillyn Gann, who pull off in the most stupendous way the sweetest, perkiest, most over-the-top with Christmas spirit elderly couple that’s doing their best to blend in despite their irrational love for meadowsweet. They can’t stop short of their usual graphic rituals, like ripping off fingernails and pulling teeth, for even Pagans realize that Sam and Dean are luscious enough to eat. There’s no harm since they’re only taking a few sacrifices a year now. They’ve assimilated.
When their fun is interrupted by the way too cheerful neighbor with the loud reindeer sweater, bearing a gift of traditional fruitcake, even the Pagans roll their eyes when she leaves and step on the cake. When even Pagans hate fruitcake, they’re blending in a little too well. I’ll never look at my cheery neighbors the same way again. I’ll be laughing at them too.

This was a great scene but the one that had me laughing uncontrollably every time I watched it was when Sam and Dean busted into the degenerate Santa’s home and then started singing Silent Night to cover up their error. God, I laughed so hard the first time I saw it I had tears in my eyes!
I think I’m the only person on the planet who actually likes fruitcake 🙂
Mr and Mrs Evil Suburban Gods were great, but it was the serenading of Skanky Santa that had me cackling madly and spilling Stella all over the cat …
I loved this episode for many, many things! The torture scene was oddly hilarious, given the subject matter, but Dean’s adaptation to “fudge” was just straight up funny. The earlier scene with the off-key and mangled “Silent Night” made me, as a singer who knows that Jensen actually can sing, wince hard in the midst of pained laughter.
