Memorable Moments: Supernatural 13.05 “Advanced Thanatology”
Welcome back to the “Memorable Moments” series! For episode 13.05, “Advanced Thanatology”, I once again put together a list of what I felt were the best and most memorable moments from the episode. The list varies from episode to episode depending on what transpired. I hope you enjoy it and share what your picks would be!
Best Broment
After Sam consoles Penny …..
…. he goes over to Dean.
Dean: How did it go?
Sam: About how you’d figure. Hey what happened back there? I mean the shot didn’t work, then all of a sudden you’re back.
Dean: I guess it took a minute for the drug to kick in. I guess I got lucky.
Sam: Lucky? Wait hold, Dean, hold on a second, what about the ghost, because I checked the EMF reader and they’re all gone. Is it luck too?
Dean: I will talk about it later.
Dean: I saw Death. The Death.
Sam: He’s dead.
Dean: No, She’s not. It’s Billie. I guess she got a new gig. She’s the one that took care of the ghost.
Sam: Why would she help us?
Dean: She wanted intel. She said we are important, that we have work to do.
Sam: What the hell does that mean?
Dean: I have no freaking clue.
Sam: Are you okay?
Dean: No Sam I’m not okay. I’m pretty far from okay. You know in my whole life I always believed that what we do was important. No matter what the cost. No matter who we lost, whether it was Dad or Bobby or… And I would take the hit, but I kept on fighting, because I believed the we were making the world a better place. And now Mom and Cas and I don’t know. I don’t know.
Sam: So now you don’t believe anymore.
Dean: I just need a win. I just need a damn win.
Best Sam Moment
Sam comes into the kitchen to find Dean making a sandwich. Sam asks if he wants a beer with that. Dean tells him ‘I’m cool’.
Sam brings him one anyways telling him ‘Come on, live a little’.
This of course has Dean suspicious. ‘What’s going on with you?’
Sam plays dumb and then brings up a case. He suggest that they go check it out, just the two of them.
Dean agrees it sounds like a case, but ‘What about Jack?’
Sam informs Dean that Jack was busy playing all his old video games. They can put up extra warding and he’ll be fine. ‘When was the last time we worked a case, just you and me?’
Later when calling it a night… they pull up to a nice hotel.
Sam suggests they check out a strip club called the ‘Clamdiver’.
Dean confronts Sam on why he’s been so nice to him. ‘Because, you know why.’ Dean tells Sam that he’s fine.
‘No you’re not Dean. You said you don’t believe in anything and that’s not true, that’s not you. You do believe in things, you believe in people, that’s who you are and that’s what you do. And you’re in a dark place and I just want to help’
Dean reassures Sam that he’ll be okay, he’s been down before and he always manages to get himself out of it. ‘The same way I always do Bullets, Bacon and Booze, lots of Booze’
Best Dean Moment
Dean realises that they will never find where the Dr. buried/hid the bodies, so he decides to kill himself…temporarily of course.
Sam objects but Dean convinces him it’s the only way and injects himself before Sam can stop him.
Sam waits by his side, giving Dean the three minutes before reviving him.
I also have to go with Billie asking Dean how they crossed into another universe.
Dean agrees to tell her, but only if she releases the spirits from the Dr’s home.
Billie sends the Reaper Jessica .
….who releases the spirits to Heaven.
Best Guest Actor Scene(s)
The return of Lisa Berry as Billie. I loved all the scenes with Dean. I am happy they were able to bring her back.
Best Set Design
Dr. Meadow’s home and Mental Health Facility.
With the pictures of the cross section of a human skull and brains hanging on the wall.
And the display of the creepy bird like masks.
Creepiest Moment
The spirit of Dr. Meadows, wearing his mask and swinging around the hand drill.
Funniest Moment
A hung-over Dean piles his plate with bacon.
Of course Sam has to tease Dean.
Sam however repents by bringing his brother a beer.
Saddest Moment
Penny waits with an Officer, when a body is brought out of the house.
Penny looks down onto the body ….
…to see that it is her son Shawn.
A devastated Penny reacts to seeing her son….
….by gently placing her hands on his face.
Alisen Down was exceptional in her portrayal as Penny Raider in this episode.
Best CGI/VFX scene
Dr. Meadow’s spirit burning up.
The spirits being released into Heaven.
Best Camera Shot
I love the light coming through the stained glass windows on the stairs’ landing.
Best Angle Shot
The down view of Dean and Billie in her Reading Room.
The up view of the stair case with the light of the flashlight and the light through the stained glass windows.
The close up of the drill.
Best Musical Cue
The song ‘It’s never too late’ by Steppenwolf starts in as the brothers head for home.
It continues to play as we witness Penny’s tragic moment of identifying her dead son Shawn…..
…..And as Billie reads through the many possible deaths of the Winchesters….
…and back to the brothers, as Dean gets a phone call….
…and arrives to a location to find …
…that Castiel is alive.
