Fan Video of the Week: Supernatural Reflections 13.04 “The Big Empty”

This time I went for something simple because the episode had a strong theme of sorrow and closure. The latter is the word I chose for the quote. The boys did not get closure in the episode from the therapist but Jack did in his own way. Finally we saw what the Empty is and that it is literally just that – a place where those that end up are just sleeping. I think they are not even dreaming. They are just blank, empty husks in a place that is guarded by a sleeping, grumpy when awake, entity. The boys’ closure is coming sooner than they think though because Castiel (or we think it is him) came back from the Empty.

The Kays Lavelle are a 6-piece band that hail from Edinburgh and Dundee. They write songs of grandeur and have already been named as one of the acts to watch for in 2010. The Kays Lavelle have finished their debut album ‘Be Still This Gentle Morning’ which is due for release in May 2010. This has been produced by Neil Pennycook of Meursault and recorded by Alex Fenton of Fentek Audio this is certainly an act to keep an eye on. Their track ‘Aftermath’ has been cited as a favourite among fans.

Trivia and Minutiae

Spock is one of the most iconic characters from the Star Trek series.

 

The concept of the Empty is reminiscent of Sheol, which the Hebrew Bible describes as a place of stillness and darkness, cut off from life and God, where both the righteous and the unrighteous go to upon death.

 

The Cosmic Entity’s supposed horrific true visage as well as his state of being in a deathlike sleep, bear some similarities with the Great Old Ones of H.P. Lovecraft’s writings. Specifically the ruler of the Outer Gods, Azathoth, also known as the “Blind Idiot God”, who slumbers outside of creation and dreams of the Universe. The Entity’s black viscous form also bears similarity to Magnum Innominandum, the Nameless Mist.

 

Mia / Kelly: Jack. It doesn’t matter what you are. It matters what you do.
Sam used the same line in 4.04 Metamorphosis when he tried to reason with a rugaru who ironically is also named Jack.

 

When Castiel wakes up in the field at the end of the episode, he is wearing a new outfit (long trench coat, blue tie) reminiscent of his seasons 4 – 8 costume, instead of his more recent outfit (short trench coat, striped tie) which he was wearing in the Empty.
