Top Ten Funniest Supernatural Scenes
Karen recently shared her list of the Top 10 Funniest Supernatural Episodes ever. No doubt that some of her favorites were also on your list of hilarious shows.
Each season has at least one classic comedic episode:
S2 – “Tall Tales” (2.15)
S3 – “Bad Day at Black Rock” (3.03), “Mystery Spot” (3.11),
S4 – “Yellow Fever” (4.06)
S5 – “Changing Channels” (5.08)
S6 – “The French Mistake” (6.15), and based on your comments to her article, “Clap Your Hands if You Believe” (6.09)
S8 – “Hunteri Heroici” (8.08)
S9 – “Dog Dean Afternoon” (9.05)
S10 – “Fan Fiction” (10.05)
You may notice that seasons 1 and 7 are missing from my list. Supernatural didn’t venture into comedy in its first season because the show was still trying to find its niche in both plot and audience. Season 7 attempted a comedy, “Season 7, Time for a Wedding”, but the episode was poorly received by a large segment of the fandom. Season 10’s “Ask Jeeves” also received a mixed reaction. Neither stand up to the standard of the other episodes on the list (and in the interest of full disclosure were not favorites of yours truly), so they don’t receive the honored title of a “Supernatural Classic”! As for other contenders for the list, there were several light-hearted episodes with great stories and/or wonderful actors (“The Curious Case of Dean Winchester”-5.07 and “Plucky Penny..”-7.14 as two examples) throughout the years. The episodes that made my list were the most widely recognized and liked, however, and deserve to be recognized as masterful diversions from the endless heartache and disappointment that the Winchester boys face week after week.
Even though I would enjoy watching any of these episodes in their entirety every day of the week, I still have my favorite scenes within these shows. These are the scenes that make me laugh out loud no matter how many times I see them. Comedic gems can also pop up unexpectedly in more traditional episodes as well. It may be timing, a look or a comedy bit that gets delivered with an inspired flair that makes it funny. Some are the scenes one would expect, while others caught me by surprise. At any moment of my day, all I have to do is think of these scenes to laugh out loud most unexpectedly, usually eliciting strange looks and startled gasps from the people around me!
So here is my Top 10 List of Supernatural’s Funniest Scenes ever:
Honorable Mention: The Unexpected Visitor – “Man’s Best Friend with Benefits” 8.15
The look on Sam’s face when the dog comes into his hotel room, Dean returns, Sam tries to explain…then it isn’t a dog anymore! I don’t laugh out loud, but I still love to replay that scene. It amuses me.
10. Air Conditioner Catches on Fire – “Bad Day at Black Rock” 3.03
So much of this episode is hilarious – the itchy nose, Sam falling down, the lost shoe, Dean’s reactions, but the last straw is the air conditioner spontaneously getting an electrical short. How many times have we had a day like that??
9. Interrogating the Cat – “Hunteri Heroici” 8.08
This is one of my favorite episodes when I need something to brighten my day. Misha’s deadpan humor kills me every time as he shares his scene with a cat!
8. The Flying Beer Bottle – “Pac Man Fever” 8.20
Crash! That “What do you want from me? I just woke up” feeling is so well played here. Reflexes? Not so much! Love it!
7. This is Your Life – “Fan Fiction” 10.05
The looks on Sam and Dean’s faces are priceless when they first realize that the high school play is about them. By the way, my title for this scene is a reference to an old American then British TV show. Each week featured an unsuspecting celebrity being lured to a location then being surprised as people and events from their life were showcased before them.
6. Scared Dean – “Yellow Fever” 4.06
Admit it. You’re laughing just looking at this 6 second clip of that scene! A career classic for Jensen, and a straight man punch line look from Jared!
5. Nutcracker! – “Changing Channels” 5.08
The accelerating panic as Dean tries to think of an answer in Japanese! I just cringe along with him every time!
4. Hi Ya Sammy – “About A Boy” 10.12
Sam’s initial shock so perfectly emotes a stunned emotion to the viewer that this scene is comedic brilliance in my book. I crack up every time I see it. I also have to acknowledge the scene where TeenDean pulls the car seat forward, crushing Sam’s knees. That is a great bit, too, but to me it doesn’t have the extended pause and lasting impact of Sam’s speechlessness.
3. The Fairy Attack – “Clap Your Hands if You Believe” 6.09
Dean being utterly terrified and chased all over the room by a fairy, then his weapon of choice is a microwave! Too funny! Honorable Mention goes to him running through the corn fields yelling, “Empathy, Sam, empathy!”
2. Utter Shock – “Fan Fiction” 10.05
I don’t even know this actor’s name, but the director’s lingering pause on this poor audience member’s stunned reaction was brilliant. No sound, no action, no dialog – just impact. Perfection!
1. Fetch – “Dog Dean Afternoon” 9.05
Absolute crack up! It was a tough call, but for me it’s the best comedic bit of the series. The fact that the boys can do this with a straight face makes is all the funnier!
So there you have the funniest scenes of Supernatural…or at least 11 of my favorites! I keep switching the order around, but I think they’re close! I know that on my next series rewatch, I am going to remember half a dozen other scenes that belong on this list and be horrified that I forgot about them, so what did I leave out?? Please help me complete this list by adding your favorite scenes! I don’t want to accidentally omit anything that is pure comedic genius, especially if it is from an otherwise serious episode!
If you need some help remembering them all, or if you just want to take a few moments to brighten your day, here are the award winning “Funniest Scenes” for the past 5 years, according to The Winchester Family Business voters!
There are so many great scenes! From the teases dropped at Comic Con, it appears that 11.04 will be another wonderful mixture of Sam, Dean and a completely new approach to television, so the tradition continues.
I should clarify that this list were my favorite scenes, but not my favorite comedic lines of the series. Some one-liners make me laugh just as much if not more than entire scenes! I will share my list of Supernatural’s best comedic lines in Part 3 of this article. Think ahead and get your lists ready, but don’t give anything away quite yet so we can compare notes without cheating!

Personally I really think Season 1 “Hell House” is one of the funniest episodes and one of my all time favourites.
Watching it now and again makes me very happy! :D:D:D
Also, “Time for a Wedding” isn’t as awful as everyone says. JMOP :p;)
That was the birth of the Ghostfacers, wasn’t it? Sorry, but I’m not a big fan of Ed and Harry, so it doesn’t make my personal list. Alice might agree with you, though. She absolutely loves their characters!
and Time for a Wedding – I had the stereotypical reaction: I was enraged that they portrayed a “fan” to be a crazy nutcase. I took it way too personally, and haven’t seen it a second time. Maybe I should tweek my funny bone and try it again?
Nightsky, I loved each and every scene and episode that you chose but I agree with Bevie: I loved Hell House. Even aside from the Ghostfacers (whom I loved here more than in their other episodes) the episode was hilarious. From the witness interviews in the beginning, in which they merrily contradicted each other, to the brothers’ prank war, I laughed through the whole thing. But I admit that the single funniest part for me was when Ed said to Harry “WWBD” and Harry then nodded and said “what would Buffy do.” I laughed my ass off the first time I saw that.
I also thought that Time for a Wedding was very funny. The funniest part was right after the wedding when Sam is explaining things to Dean. The brothers were both really funny in that scene, but Dean’s expressions and tone and gestures were comic genius. Garth was also quite funny. You should give it another try. Instead of being offended by the crazy nut case fan, I looked at it this way: although Becky was a pathetic loser who did something terrible to Sam, at least she was kind of sweet. Some of the real life fans of SPN are batshit crazies who have said horrible things about and to the actors and their wives (including threats) as well as to other fans. So the writers pulled their punches as far as I was concerned. Truth is definitely stranger than fiction in this case! But thanks for brightening up the hiatus with this reminder of just how funny SPN can be. I really hope they have at least a couple of funny episodes this season.
OK…I’ll try watching “Hell House” again. I just don’t remember it being funny but it’s worth a rewatch.
Wedding? Not so much. It really bugged me. I’m glad that it was funny to a lot of people though. Dean’s gift WAS funny. Some small appliance, right – waffle maker? I can just imagine him in a Walgreens picking up a wedding gift!
Really did like the nutcracker episode at all. Someone’s balls getting clobbered just doesn’t seem really amusing to me somehow. The Bad Day at Black Rock episode is also one I try to skip. It just became pathetic after awhile. There’s always a fine line when playing with very broad humor like that.
My favorite funny scene is from Tall Tales. The entire episode is hilarious, from the alien probing, and then slow dancing with, the arrogant college kid, Bobby’s exasperation with the bickering brothers, the horror movie villains, Sam’s “Too precious for this world” hug, and of course the trickster. But the scene where the boys start fighting over the money clip and Dean’s Baby’s rims getting bent, mocking Sam like a kid, grappling for the money and then wrestling on the bed, the exaggerated looks on their faces, the way Sam’s legs are wrapped around Dean….yeah. Classic!!!
Sorry, that was supposed to be didn’t like, not did like, regarding Changing Channels ep
Wow really? CC was one of my top rated episodes of the series. The Nutcracker scene was hilarious. Dean’s reaction to Sam’s unfortunate situation and realizing he was next had me on the floor. Every thing about that episode was so so funny. Herpexia? Sampala? Dr. Sexy? To each their own I know but that episode is one I will stop everything and watch beginning to end. And the dramatic twist at the end of the ep. Just perfect.
And Bad Day too. Other than the introduction of Bela I loved that episode as well. Jared’s comedic timing was priceless. Who knew a 6’4” giant could do pratfalls. Loved it.
Tall Tales was absolutely perfection as well. Slow dancing aliens get me every time.
S7 Plucky’s was my favorite of the season although ATFAW had it’s moments too (Dean’s reactions were sooo funny). Plucky’s 24 style clock, Sam’s panic when he entered Plucky’s, rainbows and unicorns, octovamp/vamptopus, at least I’ll see it coming (30′ robot with lazer eyes) and of course Dean laughing at glittered Sam. When have we seen Dean laugh like that since?
Clap Your Hands fight with the Tinkerbelle fairy set to David Bowie was so out of nowhere. The inventive minds of these writers just amaze me sometimes. Souless Sam and his “concern” for Dean, fight the fairies….another ep I watch from beginning to end.
But S6 favorite funny ep for me has to be French Mistake and the “acting” scene. Jared and Jensen nailed it.
I sure hope we have some funny episodes in S11 but with the Darkness and all it might be a stretch.
I scanned the whole ep list… I give up. What is ATFAW??
I agree that the acting scene in French Mistake was funny. You know why it didn’t make my list? It hit too close to home! That is exactly the way I act if on stage! I have no idea where to look or what to do with my body. It’s awful. So I cringe through that scene rather than laugh!
A time for a wedding. 😉
– Lilah
ROFL! I disliked it so much I blocked the name completely out of my mind!:D
Thanks LK!
Thanks for this. I enjoyed all your choices. Clap Your Hands if You Believe and The French Mistake being my favorites of them. Regarding other comments – I never liked the Ghostfacers either, but Hell House has grown on me over the years and I enjoy it. However, I still can’t stand Time for a Wedding. The Becky character has been like nails on a chalkboard for me from her first episode in season 5. A few you did not mention that still make me laugh out loud:
Hollywood Babylon – all the inside jokes are so much fun
Mystery Spot – As perverse as it sounds, each Dean death was funnier than the last – until the last one, of course. And –
Wishful Thinking – the brothers’ reaction to the teddy – not wanting a flaming teddy on their hands – I giggle throughout that episode because the two leads play the reactions so well
OOHHH. I forgot the piano falling on Dean in Mystery Spot. I laugh EVERY TIME. That should have made the list!
The teddy bear doctor is cute too. I enjoy it but I don’t LOL. It gets an “always precious” from me!
Hollywood Babylon? Ummm. Maybe needs a rewatch to be sure.
My favorite one that makes me smile and laugh is in Tall Tales when the boys are wrestling about the money. Sibling bantering.

I mean look at those faces!

(Phew, finally got these images to work and even more I had trouble with the video)
And of course this scene from “About a Boy”. Sam’s face Pwahah.

Thanks so much for that gif!! Looking at it so closely made me laugh again! Aside, I am reading the companion book, Heart of the Dragon right now. Young Sam and Dean bicker a lot in there. It makes the money scene so much more real in Tall Tales!

When the camera kept rolling. The look on their faces as they rolled onto the floor.
there are just so so many, i can’t keep track of all the scenes that have made me laugh out loud…those you all mentioned being some of them. i would like to add a few others that make me laugh every single time i see them:
the entire ep of the french mistake makes me laugh, but my favorite scene has to be when gen calls dean a dumb ass after telling sam he had a camel in his backyard. sam’s reaction to dean’s you married fake ruby? gets me every time.:D:D
when cas is going on about following the bees and then he says there’s nothing to add….and sam responds with, “you can add some thorazine”…has me on the floor every time.:D
i also love sam’s “oh, it’s gooey line” line upon finding the not so crunchy gooey corpse in the motel room in the ccodw.
sam’s entire scene in sam, interrupted when he’s dosed up with all the drugs and tells dean he loves him with that adorable “boop”…:D
i also laugh my butt of when soulless sam responds to dean’s response that sam needs to feel the loss by being able to have sex with the hippie chick, cuz it’ll be in the dark.:D
sam’s reaction to dean singing to air supply is super funny and i also can’t help but laugh at sam’s reaction every time dean tells hendrickson that he didn’t shoot the deputy.
there are so many more that i can’t think of at the top of my head, and i’m not on my computer so i have to bail…..but these are a few that come to mind.
😉
I rewatched “Clap Your Hands If You Believe” last night based on everyone’s recommendation. I have to admit, I laughed all the way through it! I didn’t remember so many hilarious parts. The scene of running through the corn should have made my list!
I thought of another of my favorites! Drunk Sam in Playthings is pretty funny…for a second or two before he gets serious.
All of these are great moments. One of my biggest LOL moments is in “my heart will go on” when the lawyer gets hit by the bus! I usually bust a gut at that one and I feel guilty afterwards. But it gets me every time.
I have to say I am not a big fan of the physical type of comedy. I loved many of the scenes from Nightshifter. I love it when Sam says “We’re NOT working for the Mandroid!!” Ronald says “You shut up! I ain’t talkin to you, I don’t like you!” Sam say’s “Fair enough.” When anyone says okey dokey I always think of Dean saying “I like him, he says okey dokey.” Dean saying “Oh god the secrets” when trying to impress a woman who figured the FBI must have a lot of them.
One of my all time favorite scenes is in Playthings when Sam say’s (about the immobile old lady in the wheelchair upstairs) “What do ya wanna do, poke her with a stick?” When Dean starts considering the idea, appalled Sam goes “Dude you’re not gonna poke her with a stick!!” Makes me laugh every time.
I loved the final scene in Plucky’s when there seems to be genuine humor in Deans laughter at seeing sparkly Sam. And even Sam got a chuckle. It was a nice bro moment.
I did enjoy the “fetch” and the “flying beer bottle” moments too!
I love all the funny scenes that you’ve outlined here. Bad Day at Black Rock is pretty much my favorite comedy episode, but Changing Channels runs a close second and Tall Tales a very close third. A few more funny scenes not already mentioned that I was able to think of include:
“Pudding!” along with “Boop!” Sam Interrupted wasn’t really a comedy, but those two scenes were pretty funny, along with Dean’s face when he breaks the Wraith’s spear off when he’s fighting her and his comment about Martin’s clown pictures being “original Gacy’s”. Heh.
And in WIshful Thinking I loved the whole suicidal teddy bear scene, especially Sam’s “Are we…. should we… are really going to kill this teddy bear?”
Dean in lederhosen? Yeah…. pretty good.
Castiel’s introduction to the pizza man….it seems that he was a good study. 😉
How about Sam and Dean raiding the trailer of the drunk/stoned Santa and then trying to sing carols with him to cover their awkward exit? Loved that.
I thought lots of Clap Your Hands was funny, Sams: “Third kind already? You better run, I think the fourth kind is a butt thing.” Dean’s “You were off banging pachouli” but my favorite scene was Sam and the tiny teacups.
I wasn’t too fond of Cas talking to the cat and then the cat talking to us, I thought it was just too hokey and too in your face “were trying to be funny!” to work. And I’m sorry, but that one charming scene of Sam and the dog aside, Man’s Best Friends with Benefits was far too awful and offensive an episode for me include it on any ‘best of’ lists.
Dean’s face when he breaks the Wraith’s spear off when he’s fighting her and his comment about Martin’s clown pictures being “original Gacy’s”. Heh.
I was way too grossed out by the Wraith’s spear breaking off to even look at Dean’s face! I think I close my eyes through that scene!
Sam’s close encounter comment just might make my best lines ever list. Either that or Dean’s “Empathy, Sam, empathy!”
That one charming scene of Sam and the dog aside, Man’s Best Friends with Benefits was far too awful and offensive an episode for me include it on any ‘best of’ lists.
That’s why it made the “best Scene” list and not the “Best Ep” list! I’m glad that scene is at the very beginning of the ep – I just watch the first 10 min then turn it off!
Thanks for sharing your favorites! I laugh just thinking of all these great scenes!
Sam’s close encounter comment just might make my best lines ever list. Either that or Dean’s “Empathy, Sam, empathy!”
Nightsky, one of the funniest things about that scene is that while Sam is making his very un-empathetic comments as Dean flees through the corn, Sam signals the waitress for another beer! That cracks me up every time. That whole episode is just about the funniest hour of television I’ve ever seen.

Heh! Dean’s reaction is very much like yours. He gags and looks skeeved out big time. I can’t help liking the scene partly because Sam is tied up on the bed…. love me some tied up Sammy. And he doesn’t even really fit on the bed, he’s kinds scrunched. There’s something about all that power restrained… hmmmm.
I cant believe i forgot about swap meat…the whole ep made me laugh, but the funniest scene was the beginning when the chick at the bar was trying to get sam to go home with her…the whole i would love to have the sex with you..and his i know right when she told him he was stunning…i fell off my chair:D……i forgot how much i really enjoyed this ep….a lot to laugh at.
