Let’s Discuss: My Supernatural Season Ten Wishlist
Each year when I’m staring down a long Hellatus, for fun I begin to ponder the upcoming season and what could be. After all, the past season usually leaves me wanting more and considering season nine fell way short of my expectations, I really have high hopes for season ten. So what happens when I end up putting all those hopes in an organized and bulleted list of demands wants friendly suggestions? Why my Supernatural Season Ten wishlist of course!
I’d like to think that I’m not asking for the moon, but maybe when you read this you’ll think I am. Or you’ll think I’m holding back. Why don’t you see what’s on my list, and then you can let me know yours. Let’s make this a fun time of sharing because we have all freaking summer to debate this.
Yes, I know, get on with it. Presenting my Supernatural Season Ten Wishlist:
- I’m not a big fan of bringing back past characters anymore. These writers seem to have the nasty habit of killing them (Kevin, Tessa) or just ruining everything they are (Garth, The Ghostfacers, Charlie). Only Sheriff Jody got real justice, and I’m not interested in seeing her back unless the writers solemnly swear on the lives of their loved ones and pets that they won’t kill her. Or anyone else. No more bringing back characters unless they plan on doing them some actual justice.
- I’d like to have a season with an actual cohesive season long story arc.
- I’d love to see stories that actually respect continuity and canon.
- No more forced and contrived brotherly strife. Let them fight about silly things like whose turn it is to clean up the kitchen at the MOL letters cave. Remember the fighting in “Tall Tales?” That was fun. I like fun. Hmm, brothers wrestling, more of that please.
- For Chuck’s sake, bring the damned humor back! More light moments, more clever lines, better banter between the brothers, etc. How about an actual funny episode instead of “mildly amusing for the most part”? Aim higher. I’m talking “The French Mistake” higher. That was season six guys. We haven’t had anything remotely close since then.
- Sam Winchester gets a plot. Dean Winchester gets a plot. Castiel gets a plot. Crowley gets a plot. It’s a 23 friggin’ episode season. There is no reason why they can’t in that time give meaty plots to all their characters. Keeping the guest stars/past characters away helps. Don’t introduce new recurring characters just to kill them off too.
- I vote for storytelling that services the plot and the characters, not the fans.
- I’d love to see the episodes from week to week flow together nicely and all the writers be on the same page.
- Can there be an episode in Hawaii? Please? Sam and Dean in swim trunks, bermuda shorts and flip flops? (Sorry, a girl can dream).
- I want Sam fans, Dean fans, and Castiel fans to live together in harmony (I know, it’s Pollyana-ish, but while I’m doing the whole dreaming thing…)
There, I feel better. So what do you want to see in season ten? No request is too unreasonable! Since this is a Let’s Discuss the posting rules are more lax, but don’t disrespect other posters. It’s bad karma and season ten needs all the good karma it can get. Let’s Discuss!

More SamnDean
Sam and Crowley scenes
Sam and Dean hug
Shirtless tattooing scene ;D
If somone is gonna save Dean, it should be Sam
This is great, I love your ideas. I’m going to be very general even tho I have a list of things I just don’t want to see in season 10.
Yes, I’d like to see the main characters have the best lines. No more long drawn out monologs from guests. Sorry, but our brothers are smart and I felt while others were putting together cohesive sentences, what we got from S&D were stutters and grunts in season 9.
Yes, more humor!
The only character that should come back (and stay) is Bobby. No one else matters until he is back. Period.
And please stop trying to Top the first 5 seasons, just tell compelling stories. There is no real need for a complicated yet go nowhere arc, there are other ways to tell good stories while keeping them connected and interesting.
Nice list! I think you covered 99% of the fandom’s complaints.
No more bringing back characters unless they plan on doing them some actual justice. … Don’t introduce new recurring characters just to kill them off too.
That would be lovely. Some post-“Captives” closure for Kevin wouldn’t go amiss either–and it dovetails nicely with what the hell happened in heaven following Metatron being locked up, too, not to mention what’s to become of Cas. Misha got a recurring cast status so that means they shouldn’t kill him off right?
I’d like to have a season with an actual cohesive season long story arc.
Yes!
I’d love to see stories that actually respect continuity and canon.
Double YES!!!
… Let them fight about silly things like whose turn it is to clean up the kitchen at the MOL letters cave. … Hmm, brothers wrestling, more of that please.
Not bloody likely, in fact, I’d wager it’ll be almost mid-season finale before it gets fun again with Demon!Dean running amok, but with Crowley being more of a regular that doesn’t mean it can’t be darkly comedic. Also, I think shenanigans like that are what Carver’s trying to curb trying to make Sam and Dean more responsible. But silly trash talking over kitchen cleaning…that seems like real brothers of any age. 🙂
For Chuck’s sake, bring the damned humor back!
YOU READ MY MIND! Speaking of “French Mistake” I saw this on Hulu while I was gonna rematch the finale. Warning: sarcasm galore, but I love that scene where Fake!Misha does lines with Sam and Dean in Bizzaro Earth and this video’s context just heightens it!
Sam Winchester gets a plot. … It’s a 23 friggin’ episode season. There is no reason why they can’t in that time give meaty plots to all their characters.
Spreaking of Sam + humor. Remember Jared (rightfully) calling Biebs out? You had me from “hello,” HELLO I love you all the more now! …(clearly I haven’t mastered the new comment tools) So here’s the link to the scrambled code I just entered. Click here (”http://www.eonline.com/videos/217510/jared-padalecki-talks-justin-bieber-feud”)
This season exposed that perhaps the writers can’t handle more than one character having a meaty plot at time. First half: Gad is holding Dean to their deal of healing Sam with a non-meaty Cas wandering around lost and human. Second half: Crowley/Cain’s Mark holding Dean to their deal to do in Abbaddon, the first menacing she devil since season one’s Meg the first (I loved Abbadon, but I’m a redhead too!), while a non-meaty Cas tries to rally the angels against Metatron and an equally non-meaty Gad switches sides and sets up Cas’s S9 endgame. …I just bought S8 on dvd but I don’t remember Dean’s role getting shafted so bad during Sam doing the trials as Sam has been all frigging season! And why did Sam and Gad never share solo screen time they forced the Sam-forms-an-alliance-with/forgives-Gad storyline.
I vote for storytelling that services the plot and the characters, not the fans.
??? But we like the characters that’s why we’re fans…?
I’d love to see the episodes from week to week flow together nicely and all the writers be on the same page.
Oh hell yes! It feels like the last time that happened Kripke was still in charge.
Hawaii? Please?
Somebody wrote a book from the Florida Keys, maybe they could do that? 😉
– More rock songs x 1000000
– The grittier colors back
– Story arc going trough whole season even little in monster of the week episodes
– Sam saving Dean and more Sam’s pov. (Even though I am annoyed about the hammering to other fans because of this it is still an issue)
– More humor
– Please, please, PLEASE don’t kill the recurring/interesting new characters
– Brothers and Team Free Will on same page.
– New and exiting story (Season 9 had it for me too)
I can wish but will the hopes come through? I don’t know. It is not my story to tell. Exited for next season to see what they come up with.
– Lilah
YES! Go back to the grittier colors. I get annoyed watching every new episode.
Alice – someone should print this out and put it on Carver’s desk.
Let Sam talk to a non-evil character who actually sympathizes with him. Not Cas, because in the end Cas and his profound bond with Dean will always have Sam and his feelings coming in last. That said, let Cas and Sam talk and have a relationship. That means Cas doesn’t call Sam an abomination, or say that Sam is the second worst screw up in the world. Sam has forgiven and accepted Cas after Cas did really awful things, so let Cas respect Sam and stop putting him down.
Let Demon!Dean be actually evil. Don’t suddenly decide that since it’s Dean demons are really just misunderstood creatures who only want to do good in the world and rescue puppies and kittens and save people from evil. Do NOT make it that Sam just had sucky taste in demons and didn’t trust the right ones. We already pulled if Dean likes a monster they are perfect with Benny, don’t do it again. Give Jensen the chance to play the big bad for once. Let him not be the moral center of the show while he is a demon.
Let Sam remember that the issue wasn’t that Dean kept him alive, it was that he shoved an angel in his body without letting Sam know. There are issues in the relationship and I do think they can make the relationship better, but lets resolve some REAL issues, not just issues so the writers can say see Sam’s as bad as Dean. Let Sam talk about what is is like to be possessed by Meg, by Lucifer, by Gadreel. There is story there and I have nightmares about killing Kevin should not be the only time it’s mentioned.
Decide once and for all if Cas is going to be an angel or a human. He’s an angel in season four, he’s losing power and almost human in season five, he’s an angel again in season six, he disappears and comes back as a human in season seven only to become an angel again. He’s an angel in season 8 and loses his grace at the end of the season. He’s human for half of season nine, steal someone else’s grace is an angel again, but his grace is burning off and he’s either going to die or become human again. Just PICK ONE ANY ONE for goodness sake. If a full powered angel is too easy an out, then make him human. If being human takes away what fans love then keep him an angel, but please stop the merry-go-round.
Keep Crowley interesting. Yes, I know Mark Sheppard could read the phone book and make it sound snarky and sarcastic, but work to make Crowley interesting anyway.
Let Sam save Dean. For once. Let Sam save Dean without making him a flaming hypocrite. I know we can’t possibly have Dean be wrong, wrong, wrong about anything, but just let Sam live within his stated moral code and still save Dean.
Don’t bring back anyone just to kill them. Bring back Death and have him bring the hammer down on the Rogue Reapers. Death does not strike me as a boss who tolerates insubordination. Have him come in and start cleaning up the Reaper mess, including resurrecting Tessa.
Wrap up Kevin’s story. Send him to heaven. Keep him a ghost who doesn’t go insane. Since you’ve brought up Kevin’s father as being important in both season eight and season nine tell us who the guy is. Not John Winchester! Not John Winchester! Not John Winchester!
Have season 10 actually build from seasons 8 and 9. When season 10 is done, let us say, oh now I understand why they did (Amelia, the Thule guys, Naomi all the things that just sort of happened and then got dropped. This does not include James and Portia. They can stay off screen). I mean really you set up a group of immortal Nazis and then just drop them? What was the point of Naomi? Amanda Tapping is a good actress but the part didn’t make much sense to me.
Let Sam and Dean repair their relationship and move on to saving people hunting things. Really.
I’m very greedy!
More Golems and Aaron
More Ben Edlund to write about Golems
Sera! Come back!! Please, we miss you (well, I do)
More Jodie and A4. They could have set up in business counseling reformed vampires (ve do not mention the ‘b’ vord)
That girl to have gone through a teenage rebellion already and be insisting on being called ‘A4’
None of the torturing of Sam by Demon!Dean (which will undoubtedly happen) to be psychological / emotional. If it IS psychological / emotional then we get to hear Sam’s side of the story too, dammit. You have already used up all your get-out-of-jail-free cards with Southern Comfort guys. (I am putting this in the middle and am pretending it is not my biggest fear for the new season)(but it is)(very much)
Demon!Dean to be someone so awful we actually want 100% to get rid of him and get the real Dean back. No fluffiness!
I would love to see creating Demon!Dean backfire spectacularly on Crowley.
Gadreel to somehow not be dead and become buds with Castiel – maybe the angel adventure this season could be the discovery of angel heaven – like celestial inception – then we could have all our dead angels back!
No more angel wars. To paraphrase John Winchester: half the time I don’t even know what they’re fighting about.
More men of letters history, make us believe in this group!
Secrets and discoveries in the bunker! Sam to read books in the bunker that are actually the sort of thing a 30 something academic-minded hunter might read – be creative!
The bunker needs a training room …. for training … in training gear …. by Winchesters.
The flamethrower in the trunk of the Impala to get an airing …
Some acknowledgement by a ‘real world’ character that lots of supernatural stuff keeps happening, they could be blaming it on a government conspiracy.
A good storyline relating to Castiel’s grace issue.
I don’t really see how they can do Demon!Dean as a long term story? Even half a season. Unless they move forward in time to Dean being back to normal and then going back to explaining how they got there? I dunno, I hope some thinking through of this storyline has been done ….
No more pandering to ANY of the ships. It isn’t funny. It basically annoys EVERYONE, which is quite impressive under the circumstances. And no more meta – it isn’t the writers’ strong point any more, it isn’t working.
Metatron to get sprayed in the face with water every time he starts a monologue. I want an angel standing guard over his cell and it to be their only job.
A Sam’s childhood POV episode …
I second the tattooing suggestion 😀
I would love to see Jared and Jensen playing Dean and Sam just once, for reals … for fun … they don’t have to, like, understand each other better as a result or anything plot-developing like that, but it would be fun to see
Don’t ignore the souls stuck in the veil story!
Ummmm….
No musical episode (canonically NEITHER of them can sing!)
No genderswap episode
Nobody to use the word ‘penultimate’
Any currently dead character that gets brought back to life stays living.
I think Jensen would agree with you about bringing the humor back, even he commented that someone needed to open a window the show was so dark and oppressive (although Dog Dean Afternoon, virgin Sam and Dean, there was a little) We would all love snarky, smartass Dean and some Sam bitch face. And yes some shirtless tattoo installation seems to in order. I would really like to see Sam and Dean really use the MOL archive of knowledge more. It seems like a built in get out of jail free card. And yes when Dean gets back more brothers or least as much as the J’s schedule allows.
Sam to save Dean.
Much more Sam POV.
Sam to talk (and by talk I mean more than a line or two) about the possession.
More Sam and Dean.
More brotherly love/brotherly fun; less brotherly conflict.
No more angel wars. Definitely no more Metatron monologues.
More ghosts and monsters, the whole ‘Saving people, hunting things. The family business.’
Demon!Dean to be dark, not fluffy demon Dean.
More MOL.
Lots of Crowley.
I’d like to see Bobby again somehow, someway. Oh…and Henry Winchester. I’d love to see John Winchester back too but I know that’s never going to happen. I’d also like to see Jodie helping Sam, doing her ‘Mom’ thing – the poor boy is going to need someone.
Sam to get a friend. Also, I’d like to see the friendship between Sam and Castiel continue to develop.
A Sam and Dean hug.
A big YES to the tattooing scene idea. 😀
The amulet.
Sera Gamble and Ben Edlund to come back.
Quote eilf –
No more pandering to ANY of the ships. It isn’t funny. It basically annoys EVERYONE, which is quite impressive under the circumstances.
Agree 100%.
Quote eilf –
A Sam’s childhood POV episode …
Oh yes, please. Or a Stanford time Sam ep.
AFTER demon!Dean is resolved:
I want Sam and Dean to look at each other without scowling. Way too much of that the last 3 years.
I agree, no bringing back characters to kill them for dramatic effect. Let Sam and Dean have some friends/associates that are recurring.
More rock music.
Go back to darker hues and lower lighting, it fits the show. No bowling alley scenes!
Super Glue Metatron’s lips together. (sorry E)
More Jody.
More Crowley.
Sam saves Dean. Period.
Agree, more humor. Less brotherly conflict.
Please, some continuity. Lets things flow and make sense from one episode to another. Have Sam and Dean be consistent in their characterizations and more Sam POV!!
Super Glue Metatron’s lips together. (sorry E)
Awww! I LIKE Metatron….;)
I know that it’s a dark show and all, but I would love to see a little bit of fun and happiness in that cool bunker they can now call home.
I want Sam to save Dean.
I want some real brotherly bonding, with no-one dying. And hugs. Plural. As in more than one. If the whole point was to tear down their relationship to build it back up stronger (paraphrasing an Adam Glass tweet), then let’s get with the program! I’m ready to see that happen.
I want Sam’s possession story to be addressed and not dropped. Sam was not wrong to be angry about what Dean did to him and it should be carried on to a satisfying conclusion.
Sam saves Dean.
Sam POV.
I want Demon Dean to be a real demon and not made into the nicest demon in the world.
I agree with pretty much everything everyone else has been saying. So in addition to all of that, I’d like the brothers to have either a single plot that affects them both EQUALLY, or two separate but equal plots that can at some point intertwine late in the season. What I DON’T want ever again is a plot for one brother that throws the other brother under the bus: The Trials plot relegated Dean to nursemaid and cheerleader in the second half of season eight, and though he was present and had several good POV scenes with Cas with Charlie and even with Krissy, he didn’t participate much in the main plot; but at least he got to be a good brother to Sam which is more than Sam got this season. In season nine, the Possession plot line, which was originally billed as being about Sam turned out the be about Dean and then the MoC plot which was totally about Dean rendered Sam invisible, silent, unsympathetic and ineffective simply for the sake of getting Dean to the state he was in when he accepted the MoC.
I didn’t think it was possible to give us less of Sam’s POV than in season 8, but it has actually diminished in season 9, so it goes without saying that I want more Sam POV; hell, at this point I’d like for him to complete a sentence.
I’d like for Dean to learn something about Sam for a change. We got Bad Boys where Sam supposedly learned all about how Dean sacrificed everything for him (as though Sam didn’t already know that), but what has Dean learned about Sam? Well, since Dean is still misinterpreting everything Sam says and putting it in the worst possible light, I’d say not much.
I’d like snarky fun Dean back, the one who loved hunting, the one who liked to get a rise out of his brother, the one who played jokes like making Sam sit in the clown chair or taking a picture of him with a spoon hanging out of his mouth, the one who’s secretly a marshmallow underneath the tough shell and more caring that he realizes. I am not fond of Bitter Dean, Angry Dean, Dictator Dean or Everyone Betrays Me Or If They Haven’t They Will Dean.
More Sam and Cas, more Sam and Crowley, more Sam and Jody… hell, more Sam and anyone at all.
And lastly, I DO NOT want Sam to compromise his integrity or his code of ethics just to save Dean. Do I want him to save Dean, absolutely, I want him willing to try anything and everything humanly possible, including sacrificing himself, but I DO NOT want him to slaughter an innocent to do it. The only thing we’ve been shown about what Sam is thinking this season, the only thing that’s been made clear is that he thinks all lives are equal and that to sacrifice one for another, even when that ‘other’ is Dean is wrong, and it has been a line he’s not been willing to cross not even for Dean. I fear now, with the finale and that wretched “I lied” comment that Sam’s entire code of ethics is gone in one fell swoop. As attractive as it is to have the brothers be willing to do just about anything for one another, it is not attractive (to me anyway) for them to be willing to risk the lives of others, especially innocent others in their respective quests to keep each other alive. It negates their entire motto of “Saving People/Hunting Things” IMO. Maybe the motto should now read “Saving people, unless you get in the way of me saving my brother/Hunting things.” If saving Dean means killing Jody or Charlie, Garth, or even annoying Krissie, then I don’t want Sam to do it because its wrong. I don’t want a fundamental truth that we live by here in the real world to not be true in the world of Supernatural. It’s not heroic to be willing to turn on others just to get your desired result no matter how much that desired result is being fueled by love.
Oh so much of alll of what E said. I’ll add one more thing. One fun thing becasue I want Sam involved in the joke….not just be the joke. I want the boys to play laser tag in the Bunker. Or PAintball. They can claim its a training excersize. 🙂 And of course its ends in laughter,,,both of them laughing WITH each other.
Hi Amyh, Thanks, and I’d like to see the brothers having fun WITH each other again too. When was the last time they had a good time in each other’s company? Bobby saw them getting along and joking in At Death’s Door, but that was season 6!! Geez.
Sorry, I am ranting again… 😮
Also, another thing I’d like to see (or like to NOT see given your perspective ) is any more dropped plot lines; they are sooooo incredibly, annoyingly frustratingly confusing that it basically makes the main arcs so hard to follow as to render an entire season nearly incomprehensible. Decide what the main thrust of your season is going to be and then make sure all of the episodes contribute in some meaningful way. Sam seems to be the chief victim of dropped plot lines but Cas has suffered his share too:
Cas as human? What was the point of that again? He made almost no reference to it or what he learned from it after he regained some grace, so I am not at all sure what we or he were supposed to have gleaned from that and since his time as a human didn’t seem to come into play at all while he was running the angel war, it all seemed like a waste of time that could have been better spent elsewhere.
The Bart and Malachai non-plot. I am connecting this to Cas because it seems as though somehow this lame story thread was supposedly about what Cas was doing/experiencing but once again, I can’t see why TPTB even bothered with it. If it was only to get Cas captured so he could then steal some grace, well geez, they could have saved at least 2 full hours of useless plot wrangling and just had Cas steal the grace from that angel he killed in the bus…. no muss, no fuss, problem solved, then they could have spent the time they saved in having Cas NOT work in a convenience store or his pathetic foray into the dating world on doing something about all of Sam’s many dangling plot threads:
Lets take Suicidal Sam – he was suicidal and then he wasn’t. Did he want to die or didn’t he and why? None of it was ever explained and if we don’t know why Sam was OK with dying, then it makes Dean’s use of possession to save him look even more justified.
Or how about “These trials are purifying me,” from season 8? Is Sam purified or isn’t he? Well since it was mentioned once and then summarily dropped and the repercussions of the trials were never explored, we have no idea. Does Sam’s blood still contain some traces of the demon blood? What might be the repercussions of having demon blood and angel grace inside of you at the same time? (I still consider the Amelia plot and the wretched “Not Looking” plot as being unresolved but I’ll let that go now in favor of other more glaring examples.)
Or how about Possession Sam? How does Sam feel about being possessed? Can he remember anything Gadreel did, does he know that Gadreel also killed three soldiers in addition to Kevin? Does he have knowledge that he picked up from Gadreel’s psyche? We’ve been told Sam knows everything that Gadreel knows but there’s been no evidence of that so far. Will there be any backlash in the future to this possession? How long has Sam been suffering from nightmares about Kevin? Is he having nightmares about anything else connected with the possession? We have no idea, because Sam wasn’t allowed to react in any meaningful way to any of it other than to SAY he was angry (understandable, but never shown in his actions as he was incredibly dedicated to Dean all season long), and he was never allowed to discuss it with anyone other than to say he didn’t want to talk about it. There were no montages to show him waking up from nightmares, no indication that he has any PTSD resulting from being essentially held captive for months etc…nothing.
Or my favorite…. how about the leftover angel grace and Sam’s desperate plea to Cas to “help me do one right thing?” The angel grace thing turned out to be completely useless and a waste of time and energy on everyone’s parts in the VERY NEXT SCENE. Sam’s tragic desire to do the right thing and not be a disappointment again was thwarted exactly 5 minutes later; all that buildup and pain was for NOTHING.
And finally, what about the potential for Sam and Gadreel to end up bonding somehow? It was set up that they could have had some kind of strange if tense resolution between them, could have talked and realized that they both were desperately trying to make up for terrible past mistakes that no one seemed willing to forgive them for; together they could have discovered that they had the answer to taking down Metatron, but the whole notion of a connection between the two was thwarted by one line – “You’re too close to this” and then Sam was sent out of the room so that Dean could have a mo-mo with the guest star, in a confrontation that made very little sense. Ugh. what a copout. A perfect opportunity to not only explore Sam’s issues with the possession, but to explore Gadreel’s perspective as he and Sam have an awful lot in common was completely wasted. It could have been fascinating if Gadreel and Sam got to talk and come to some kind of mutual understanding and from there actually generate a real conflict between he and Dean who really, really wanted Gadreel dead. It also would have made Gadreel’s final sacrifice all that much more poignant as he would have gone with the understanding that there was finally ONE person who understood him and forgave him. Why wasn’t it done this way? I have no idea… maybe because they were too busy turning Sam into a plot point instead of a flesh and blood character, and plot points shouldn’t talk for fear of muddying the waters; can’t have sympathy for both sides of a conflict now can we? Then people might get CONFUSED.. better to spoon feed them so that the don’t have to think. That’s my guess anyway.
All of this comes down to the show running IMO and the planning involved in overseeing a set of season long arcs. Season 9 in particular seems to be suffering from poor planning, and comments my Mr. Carver such as “We are going to toss a few things at the walls to see what sticks” is not a great endorsement for organization and planning a season if you ask me. For season 10, I’d like Carver and his writing team to plan out better what they are going to do with the plots and then make sure the episodes tick various plot points along the way towards the culmination of what ever story they have planned. I know that’s how Kripke did it… he oversaw what the other writers were writing, tweaked scripts, had final approval of all scripts and even told his writers what they were going to be writing about from time to time. (I am referring to a comment made by Kripke and Sera Gamble in season 3, Kripke told Sera Gamble to write a story “about cops” to which Sere supposedly replied at that time “I don’t want to write a story about cops,” but she did anyway as instructed and the fabulous Jus in Bello was the result.) I want more oversight like that; Carver calling out writers on needless and confusing fan service, meta commentary simply for the sake of it, self serving justifications for what they are writing as thinly veiled criticism of the fan base, cutesie characters who distract and most importantly poor continuity and loose canon (ha!). I want good, cohesive storytelling that includes tight plotting, continuity and equality for both brothers without relegating either one of them to caretaker or instigator status simply because it’s convenient in the moment. Kripke did it for five years and Carver was part of that process, so its time that he step it up.
Coherent storyline taking stories from s08 &09 (especially Amelia storyline) and moving them forward.
Sam POV with a healthy mixture of flashbacks and Sam talking for a change.
In Season 2 & 3, there is one scene in each (that I remember…there may be another) where Dean is fixing the car. In Season 4, they gave us the first laundromat scene. I said ‘finally’. Seasons later, no repeat performance (I’m not counting Castiel’s disrobing in a laundromat). All throughout the series, I’ve wanted to see more ‘mundane’, on-the-road and living out of a dufflebag type scenes. Like they have car trouble and Dean needs to pull over and do on-the-spot repairs, or Sam and Dean flipping a coin to see who goes to the laundromat. Or they’re busted up after a fight with whichever MOTW and they pull up to the first motel, determine who looks the least bloody and that person checks them in, and then they just crash on their beds as soon as the door closes behind them. That could be the end of an episode. Those simple, mundane things could also be a lead-in to the episode’s story. I dunno, I’ve got lots of ideas (as we all do) but I’ve always thought the show could’ve shown more of the simple aspects of the life.
Just Sam and a Sam that has a strong presence in both action and voice. When he had the mytharc it was used to deny him a pov and insight and now when they give Dean the mytharc Sam is still written the same way .I wish the ‘I lied’ line had not happened because Sam’s anger was honest and justified and now it feels like it would be impossible to go back to those feelings over the possession and the whole thing has turned into a nasty mess with Demon Dean has a result.
If Sam saves Dean then do not make him a hypocrite in doing it let Sam keep some dignity as a character and there should be certain lines he will not cross in wanting to save his brother that nobody is sacrificed to do it . And Sam needs a character connected to him because at the moment Sam is devoid of any real connection outside of his brother and that is not going to be any good to him. And I would like a few Sam centric episodes ,not one last season was ridiculous and the current situation is ideal to explore Sam .
And I would like to see Aaron and Golem again that seemed a interesting sl that could be revisited and Jody as always.
My wishlist for season 10:
• A resolution to Kevin’s and Castiel’s storylines. We left Kevin as a ghost, and Castiel needing to replenish his grace. I hope these issues aren’t dropped in season 10.
• I’d like Sam to take action and save his brother. His lack of initiative regarding the Mark did play a part in the most recent disaster. Sam is smart, determined and capable. I want to see that in season 10.
• Remember when Dean had fun? I’d like to see that again. Dean as a demon is a wonderful opportunity to take a break from the constant guilt and self-loathing.
• About Dean’s guilt and self-loathing: I don’t want Dean’s time as a demon to add to it. I’d like him to learn to accept himself and his decisions.
• I want Crowley to get really Winchestered. I haven’t forgotten about Tommy, Jenny and Sarah –especially Sarah. Now, Crowley’s manipulation has led to Dean becoming the very last thing he ever wanted to be. Crowley is due for a comeuppance.
• I’d like to see more of the Men of Letters legacy.
• Last but not least: less negativity in the fandom, please. Let’s not dwell on our frustrations but celebrate the things we enjoy about our show. Let’s express criticism in a respectful and constructive way. Let’s avoid being condescending/rude/ aggressive towards fans who happen to disagree with us. Let’s avoid bashing Carver, and bashing the writers in general. No request is too unreasonable, right?

Billion times this.
– Dean to tell Sam he’s a demon right away because I’m fed up with the lies
– Cas to spend 90% or his screentime with the boys, not boring random characters who die or disappear in 1-2 episodes
– tons of Crowley
– bring Gabriel back properly
– open the fucking Cage and give us some villains we care about
– kill off Metatron early in the season
– don’t solve the demon!Dean storyline too fast
– give Cain multiple episodes
I really liked Season 9, if the next season can go better – well, that would be something next to a masterpiece.
I generally trust the writers and respect their decisions (mostly), but there is this thing – mythology. We’ve got three showrunners so far, and despite the fact that they all extremely creative and gifted, no one ever seemed to care about the myth-arc of the SPNverse. I can’t be the only one who’s interested what happens to angels and demons when they die, how an angel can become a human, why Death said that human souls are important. Where is God, for God’s sake? Of course, I’ve got some ideas of my own, we all have to invent some explanations and theories, but I would love to know what the writers are thinking!
I liked s9 as we’ll. I loved every minute of Sam. I loved as I always do his never give up attitude, especially when it comes to his brother. As I believe this story to be about Sam and deans own personal monsters, I hope we finally get to hear from dean why it is he goes to such extremes and we finally come to hear him say that it was himself he has no faith in. IT was never Sam. Dean nEeds to finally face himself and conquer his monster.
With that Sam will save dean and come to understand that he is in fact worthy not only to dean but to himself and this world.
Misperceptions …..rest in pieces
Cheryl’s idea that’s amulet save dean, but I’d settle for its mere return
What is Crowley and why is he the only demon blowing red smoke
Monsters….I miss hunting monsters.
Sam worrying about dean while in the shower:)
Levity. Brother banter. Sam working with Crowley hating every second of it. I think Sam should threaten to kill Crowley at least once per eppy:D
The talk.
Diabolical dean
Ash or trickster would be fun
Always wanted to see one of cases come back to haunt them……like Luther’s vamp girlfriend or Amy’s son
Ben edlund. And sera gamble
My one true wish…..a happy fandom
I like and agree with your wish list, Alice.
I would like to see an end to the brother drama and angst, these are grown men and they should be able to communicate better than they do to each other. But I know they love each other deep down because it shows in their actions towards one another.
The old saying” actions speak louder than words” becomes readily apparent when you watch some of their actions towards one another even when they aren’t getting along.
And no more bringing back past characters to kill then off, and no killing Jody Mills.
There are many great ideas here. Remember back when Kripke talked about how he struggled to get the pilot picked up? Remember how much credit he gave to David Nutter? Maybe, we need to be praying to Chuck to have David Nutter come and help out with the plot line and the story arc for season 10. Maybe what we really need is a David Nutter reboot.
I do like the idea of having the Dean be particularly evil, but he is under no circumstances allowed to kill Sheriff Jody Mills.
I would like to see resolution with Kevin. Remember when he picked up a broken tablet, and it re joined into one piece at his touch? I think even though he is a ghost he could pick up the tablet and it would become one again. Once the tablet is whole, it will be fully powered, and since Kevin is a prophet, he will be brought back to life by the power of the tablet. It would make sense. A girl can dream can’t she?
Oh … and I want the Samulet used for something magical. It came from Bobby, after all, and was intended for John Winchester.
I agree with most or all of what Alice says, except for point #1. Yes, Garth coming back was a fairly bland episode (EXCEPT I drive through Grantsburg, WI several times a summer, on the way to my cabin. I have not yet run into Garth!), but the return of Ghostfacers was well reviewed by this site and Alice, I was surprised to see them mentioned. The only issue with Ghostfacers was it was stand-alone, but it was good, and reviewed that way here at WFB. And I will never agree with Charlie being an issue. Again, I loved her episode, but it was at the beginning of the season when more focus should have been on the season story line. I don’t see how that episode did anything to ruin her character. She was her flawless self.
Thank you! Almost, to the letter, you put down the same list that I sent to the CW show after watching “Bloodlines” and being really fed up. So fed up that I felt compelled to comment on where the show was heading. I, too, so miss the humor (and music) and loved French Mistake and how the show could just make fun of itself and do it so well. It was FUN!!!! and it’s good to take a break from all of the “dark” issues that often are the core of the episodes which is understandable, but doesn’t mean that laughter and irreverence and satire can’t also be there. I also frankly, do not understand why two very attractive young men seem to so rarely have time for well, women in their lives (beds/backseats/etc. is actually where I’m going so we get to see “more” of our hot stars) because it simply isn’t like Dean, especially, not to even flirt!! He did very little flirting this season (though I did like the fact that they paid homage to the older ladies out there this season briefly in that one episode) and I really don’t remember him ever getting laid!! Really! In the real world would that happen!?! Duh! Sam as well needs to get out there more (and that whole tired Amelia thing from last year doesn’t even count cause there was absolutely no sparks there) because I remember the episode when Sam didn’t have a soul and Dean was abducted by faeries and then Sam checking out the hippie girl and bringing her back to his room instead of looking for Dean…ahh, good memory! I know that Jensen and Jared are married now, but that doesn’t translate to the show because Dean and Sam are single!!! Plus, am I the only one who thought that the last Meg and Castiel had something hot there! Real chemistry. I was hoping that somehow they would have moved that plot line along because it really did register on the screen.
But as to all of your wish list, right there with you, so thank you again for writing your wish list and I agree 100% and I, too, will wish that those in charge of the show will read your comments and listen and then truly, advance the story and do really good work that every person on the show, cast and crew, can be truly proud of and if they do that, then the fans will be appreciative!!
Supernatural Wiki is down so I was wondering….if Dean as a Demon seduces human females , can he father a half-demon, half-human child like the anti-Christ character, Jessie? After all, he is a different kind of demon. He’s not inhabiting a meat suit. His very being is demonic and he cannot die or be killed until the Mark and the Blade are destroyed/gone. Any theories/thoughts?
I would love to see DemonDean run into Roy and Walt. Now that could be funny.
🙂 I don’t think Roy and Walt would think it’s funny 🙂
sorry double post
I want just about all that you want Alice!
and this: quoting E –
I’d like snarky fun Dean back, the one who loved hunting, the one who liked to get a rise out of his brother, the one who played jokes like making Sam sit in the clown chair or taking a picture of him with a spoon hanging out of his mouth, the one who’s secretly a marshmallow underneath the tough shell and more caring that he realizes. I am not fond of Bitter Dean, Angry Dean, Dictator Dean or Everyone Betrays Me Or If They Haven’t They Will Dean. Unquote
And a couple more things besides Bobby back. Gabriel alive and back now and again and a cure for Garth’s werewolveriness.
and yes, the darker filming was the best for this show, and more classic rock would be great. Always wanted to see the brothers shopping at the Sally Ann trying to find something to fit Sam. No more gut wrenching misery of brother vs brother.
I agree with most lists. Yes, yes and yes. I’d like to see Sam be smart and determined and above all, bad ass!! I’d like Dean to be snarky and a huge pain in the ass to Crowley. I’d like Cas to step up and do what needs to be done so that all angels besides him become what they should be – a side note and not a story line.
And, I, too, like other posters, would like to see more of the brothers being human – enjoying a good meal, hot water and good water pressure, sleeping – can we get more shots of the guys sleeping?! Not dead or dying or deathly ill, but just healthy sleeping? The Winchester brothers have super-human healing powers, it seems, but they are human and I’d love to see the writers expand on that more. More shared memories, taking care of each other, grocery shopping, folding laundry, doing dishes, making the bed. Those mundane human tasks that demons and angels and superheroes know nothing about, but make up the fabric of a human life. That would be great!
For some reason I want to see a return of Sams OCD. Specifically…..i want to see Sam cleaning. Down on his knees, wearing rubber gloves and scrubbing the bathroom. Of course maybe its just sometiung to do to release tension and pent up energy. MAybe he’s cleaning while he v/o’s information hes gleaned on how to save Dean. It could be a montage: Sams cleaning and then mopntages research, talking to Caine, Castiel, research, maybe a run in with Demon Dean and Crowly…..and then Sam stops scrubbing – maybe with Crolwys laughter in his ears. ANd then in the spaces of seconds Sam looks defeated, broken, leans his head against the wall and then angry, determined. He stands, throws the scrub brush and storms out of the bathroom and in a moment of levity, trys to use his laptop, only to relaise he still has his rubber gloves on. Sam rolls his eyes, frusterated then sad as he glances at the chair next to him, knowing the teasing he would have gotten if Dean was there. Sam straightens, resolves and determined. he sits at the computer, goes to a website and we see from the curl of his lips, the hope in his eyes he found what he needed. He picks up his cell, dials…waits a beat then says “I found it. A way to save Dean. Meet me at the bunker.”
Yeah, i want a scene like this
let’s kill some sons of bitches, and raise a little hell. 😮
😉 I agree Nolanola!
Sam should save Dean and talk, instead of make us guess what he feels and thinks
Demon Dean has to be evil, not a good one, please (but not for the whole season)
Let them have a long talk and forgive and forget once and for all
No more angels’ war. I’d like to see an “angelic” angel for a change. Enough of angels worse than demons
More humor and snarky Dean
I’d like to see Cain again
Better dialogues for the boys
No more villain monologues, unless they are as well written and well acted as Crowley’s monologues
More focus on the story arcs (and wrap them up)
No more loose ends
Don’t kill all the amazing recurring characters (Kevin, Gadreel, Abaddon)
Alice,
I’ll take all of your points but especially the “everybody gets a plot”, more focus on the plots and kill the fan service.
I prefer Cass working with the Winchesters than all those angels I don’t know or care about. And more Crowley please.
I know that in the past Sam has had the mytharc, but I don’t recall a single time in the past 8 years when Dean was silenced and sidelined the way Sam was the last half of this season. Even this season when Sam was possessed, Dean was still front and center. Lack of Sam especially in the last 6 episodes just made me crazy, especially when there was so much to discuss; if not their relationship then the MOC? I fell in love with a show about two brothers, not one. I hope they find a way to make the show more equal and balanced between the brothers in S10.
I don’t mind the boys fighting. In fact, I was excited about the Purge. Thought finally they’re going to get to the root of their problems. But they threw out that cryptic crap in Purge and never again addressed it. Then in the finale we get, “I know”, “I lied”, and “I’m proud of us”. And all is right with the world. Yeah, right. If they’re not going to address it, just don’t bring it up again.
Finally, I want the writers to drive it home that Dean is in this mess because of rash decisions made by Dean. When Sam and Cass made well intentioned decisions that went south, they were held responsible, mostly by Dean. Already there’s talk that Dean took on the mark because he thought he had nothing else to lose (translation – Sam’s fault or Crowley). But if he lost Sam it’s because he walked away and refused to apologize or even acknowledge that he might try to understand why Sam was upset.
I’m not optimistic about S10.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. It’s been driving me nuts all season long that somehow Sam’s words to Dean, which were THE TRUTH and NEEDED to be said suddenly become the bigger crime than what Dean actually DID to Sam. Yes, we all know why Dean did what he did, TPTB made doubly even triply sure that we understood without a shadow of a doubt that Dean felt trapped and made a quick decision at the very last moment in a fit of desperation. I get it. But, that does not absolve him of the act itself, an act he knew was wrong; it does not absolve him from lying to Sam for months afterward; it does not absolve him from running away rather than talking to his upset brother. Dean was cowardly in that moment, and then used his guilt and need to self punish to get himself into trouble with the MoC. He brought it all on himself, and I’d like to see him learn something when its all over and most of all I’d like him to apologize; if not for saving Sam (because he will probably never be sorry about that) but for hurting him, lying to him, making him think he was crazy, for forcing possession on him when he knows Sam’s history with possession and how much that must have hurt him. How about an apology to Sam for being so reckless as to take on the mark in the first place without even asking what he was getting into? Because Sam is now the one whose left to clean up the mess, and for Sam’s sake, I hope that TPTB allow him to do it. Dean needs to do some self realization here and decide why getting himself into such an awful mess was better than simply talking to his brother and working things out with him… or as Sam said in the Purge “if you want to be brothers…. well those are my terms”… with the insinuation that “it will take some work” which Dean choose not to do in that moment. Dean’s stance and rationalizations here has been hard for me to swallow and hard for my to sympathize with.
It’s funny because I was reading people’s wishes for season 8 not long ago and the number one wish was for SAM TO SAVE DEAN! We all know where that went.
I want to be optimistic, and for the sake of not being negative, that’s all I’ll say about that.
I agree with most people’s wishes here, but here are the biggest ones:
Sam outsmarts Demon Dean.
Sam saves Dean.
Dean actually thanks him for saving him and acknowledges OUTLOUD IN COMPLETE SENTENCES that he screwed up and is sorry and finally gets Sam’s side of things.
Sam says OUTLOUD IN COMPLETE SENTENCES that he understands why Dean did what he did and forgives him for it.
THEY HUG and go on to shoot monsters and play laser tag in the bunker (great suggestion).
They laugh together at someone else’s expense, preferably Cas.
Jody doesn’t die.
They make decisions TOGETHER about THEIR lives.
Sigh……a girl can dream. Oh, and that suggestion about Sam worrying about Dean while in the shower…..stellar. I am completely on board with that.
It’s funny because I was reading people’s wishes for season 8 not long ago and the number one wish was for SAM TO SAVE DEAN! We all know where that went.
Huh!! Sam saved Dean in season 8 about as well as he saved him in season 9.
To be fair, Sam did save Dean from being a hellhound’s chew toy in Trial and Error 😀
True, but it wasn’t a BIG save, like a ‘bring him back from the brink of death or even actual death’ type of save that Dean has done for Sam several times now (season 2, season 9). As a matter of fact each time Sam has tried it (season 3, season 8, season 9) he’s failed spectacularly. Poor Sammy.
Plus Dean griped about that meaning that Sam was going to do the Trials, so it’s not like Dean even appreciated it. The guys save each other during hunts all the time, but Sam has never come through with a big save for Dean. He did save the world from Lucifer, but no one, including Dean, Charlie and apparently the online books Becky published acknowledge that. They all give Dean the credit, so it seems like the show has taken even that one win away from Sam.
sorry…. meant to use ;);) to signify sarcasm
I’d like to have a season with an actual cohesive season long story arc.
Heck yes. Jeremy Carver has to remember that if he writes two episodes a season, they don’t run back-to-back – there are 21 in between that have to further and agree with whatever he sets in motion.
I’d love to see stories that actually respect continuity and canon.
Amen, sister – from your mouth to the writers’ room speaker phone, on full volume!
For Chuck’s sake, bring the damned humor back! More light moments, more clever lines, better banter between the brothers, etc. How about an actual funny episode instead of “mildly amusing for the most part”? Aim higher. I’m talking “The French Mistake” higher. That was season six guys. We haven’t had anything remotely close since then.
There’s nothing I would like more than to have back the bickering, bantering brothers, who when not fighting evil side-by-side, love pushing each others buttons. But how do we (believably) get that now they’ve turned Dean into a demon? Sure, Crowley is snarky and as much as I love that about him, most of the time, that snark comes at the expense of menace. And Dean Winchester, hunter extraordinaire, stripped of his humanity and turned into a Knight of Hell sure as heck needs to be menacing. If he’s cracking wise every time he’s on screen, it takes the oomph out of turning him into a demon.
And on a similar note…. How do you switch to MOTW episodes when one of your heroic leads is now a monster himself? Do you conveniently forget Dean is a demon for an episode or seven so Sam and Dean (and Cas and Crowley) can go hunt a rugaru, clear out a nest of vamps, help Jody with a case and then, oh yeah, have Sam remember that Dean is now the very thing he’s hunted all his adult life so that Sam can try to fix him in time for the mid-season finale? One of my most fervent wishes for Season 10 is this scenario never EVER happen.
Sam Winchester gets a plot. Dean Winchester gets a plot. Castiel gets a plot. Crowley gets a plot. It’s a 23 friggin’ episode season. There is no reason why they can’t in that time give meaty plots to all their characters. Keeping the guest stars/past characters away helps.
Yes, yes, yes and yes. And I would like banned from the scripts any dialogue given to Sam that ends in elipses, requiring the viewer to fill in the blanks , or that is accompanied by the stage direction “Sam leaves the room mid-sentence, mid-argument, mid-anything.” :p
I’d love to see the episodes from week to week flow together nicely and all the writers be on the same page.
Yes please. Rewatching the Season 9 premiere the other week, I was reminded of an early glitch: Sam was ready to die and Death showed up to escort him…where? The doors to Heaven were closed by this point, a wrinkle I’m pretty sure Death would have been aware of, and probably should have mentioned to Sam. With God AWOL, Death seems the most powerful supernatural being around so I’d love to see him come back and do some smiting to restore the natural order. (And, in the process, if he could do away with the rogue reapers who fly in the face of canon, I’d love him even more.)
Among my other wishes:
– Add me to the list of people who would like to see Kevin’s story resolved – and this should include the reveal of who his Dad is.
– Please leave the meta alone; the late season nine attempts came across as far more mean-spirited than funny.
– And, please, I do not want to go through another entire season (or even most of a season) with the brothers at odds. It’s not just the destination, Mr. Carver, it’s the journey – and I would prefer that the brothers take that journey together. At this stage I’m not sure this wish can be granted but I’m an eternal optimist and will maintain my white-knuckled grip on that hope.
The timing of the closing of heaven to souls wasn’t really established. Charlie described being in heaven, i.e. reliving one of her best memories and Dorothy told her that was how heaven worked. Kevin died mid season and after the Charlie episode. He was getting his information from what sounded like a huge game of telephone where everyone trapped in the veil was talking to those nearest to them and then the information was spread from one soul to another. We have Death offering to make Sam’s death permanent, and I should note that Sam didn’t ask for heaven but he didn’t expect Hell either. It is possible that Death was as illusory as Bobby and Dean in Sam’s mind and this was simply Sam fully accepting his own death. We also have Metatron telling Gadreel that he did something to make certain no more prophets came forth after Kevin died. I concluded that heaven was open until Metatron did whatever he did to keep the prophets out. Until Kevin died, we didn’t know heaven was closed for business, so the timing works for me. Metatron decides he’s bored and wants the angels back in heaven under his control. He needs to to make himself the only prophet. So he shuts heaven so that no more prophets can come forth and closing heaven to every soul is the collateral damage.
My take was that the closing of Heaven to souls was an unforeseen consequence of Metatron’s spell. He slammed the door shut to keep out the angels but, oops, in the process, shut out souls, too.
That seemed to be supported by Kevin in Captives, when he first breaks through the veil in the bunker:
DEAN: Why aren’t you in Heaven? I mean if anyone deserves an express pass to Paradise-
KEVIN: I couldn’t. We can’t. No one can. Heaven’s closed for business. Everyone who’s died since the angels fell, we’re just stuck inside the veil….
Of course, you’re right about Charlie, and Death gave no indication Heaven was closed when he came for Sam, which was after the angels fell, [and yes, I’m assuming Sam was headed for Heaven; my heart doesn’t want to consider the alternative 🙂 ] so colour me confused.
I think all this adds an exclamation point to Alice’s Wish No. 3:
I’d love to see stories that actually respect continuity and canon.
i think the Charlie conversation was just yet another writing/continuity error, given the scene in Captives that Scullspeare described above….
A lot is said about the wishes for season 10 and I agree with most of them. So here are my:
– a two-part series like in season 2
– let Sam for once be a smartass and safe his brother. Let him be a hero and please NO deals about souls etc;)
– more than one sentence from Sam in an episode. Last time I checked San is able to talk more than one sentence, right. 😉
– sometimes I want to throttle Sam: Hey this is your brother who does something really stupid, wake up! Kick Dean in the ass! Forget the fight. Be brothers again! Okay maybe I should throttle the writers for writing such an unemotional Sam…:(
-I don’t need a demonic Dean for half the season 10. My question: How should Sam learn that his brother is a deamon? How will Sam cure his brother, just a simple exorcisim? Oh please no.
Is DeamonDean a real badass, does Dean know that he’s now a deamon? Can he “feel” his possesion? I would like to see some kind of torture DeamonDean-Sam (PLEASE don’t kill me).
-Dean and Sam on some kind of holiday trip(camping would be my favorite!) after a bad hunt and then this trip goes south ending in a new hunt.
– MORE brother time, some huggings and chick flick moments would be nice
– I would like to see more Jodie
– a interesting main storyline for both brothers. Cas and Crowley would be good too
– no more fighting between the brothers, we really had enough of it in season 9. Okay the banter and bitching and FUN YES YES YES!!!
– Is there still the MoC? Maybe it needs to be destroyed during Deans deamon-trip?! Is Cain still there?
– more about the MoL
In season 9 we got a lot of new interersting news
– Kevin is a ghost now, check.
-Heaven is closed, check.
– Charlie is god knows where, in Ozz/Heaven maybe, check
-Sam didn’t close the door of hell, whent throu the trials, check
– but we never got the answeres what happened then. Maybe in season 10. What are the consequenses of heaven is closed, Kevin being a ghost, the never finished trails etc.
– we had a supernatural christmas episode (I liked it so much)
-what about a Sam or Dean birthday episode, funny or spooky, some nice hunting…
– NO Spinoff PLEASE
So I think that’s enough for at least 23 Episodes. With the ideas of all of you it would be a FANtastic season 10. And I hope maybe more to come.
Season 9 was not my cup of tea. The beginning , yes. But after Mother little helpers, well. I was tired of watching Dean becoming some kind of dictator, Sam was only a bystander with nothing to do than to look scared. The angle fight was boring. And the final episode was cut down to a few nice moments and a lot of talking between the angels. I was disapointed.:(:(:(
But I still got hope for season 10.
😀
I totally agree with your list. I miss the humorist elements so much. I felt like the writers this season had completely lost their way. I also miss the monster of the week element.
Wishlist: ownership. At ten years of development the characters should pretty much write themselves. Their reactions/experiences shouldn’t be generated by popular opinion. Obviously that means trusting the writing team to be focused and unified in where they’re going with the characters.
Wishlist: females. Fandom reaction has dictated the presence (or rather absence) of women on the show. In part this is all on the writers. You DON’T introduce a female as a “love interest” for god sake; you introduce her as a PERSON. Not every heterosexual female on the planet wants to “screw a Winchester”-most maybe, but not ALL.
*Is it that difficult to have maybe a team of competent female hunters (Arrow) that they work with occasionally but don’t screw?
*I like the Hannah character (also introduced in press as a potential “love interest”) but how much more interesting would it have been if she were human? A good old-fashioned “forbidden love” story line would go a long way (Buffy/Angel) in character development.
*My son happened to catch the “Krissy the teenage hunter” episode with me and he was all “Brick Fuckin’ Master” when he saw it. My guess is that they were taking a page from “The Last of Us”, a HUGELY popular game with the young adult male population, to try to draw in those male viewers. I LOVED the way that Dean treated Krissy like a younger version of himself (as opposed to a younger FEMALE version of himself). And I think that “mentor” relationship would open up a whole different side to the brothers. I’m also guessing that the female fandom went collectively to the gutter on that almost instantly. A writing misstep: kissing Dean on the cheek was misleading to that intent.
Wishlist: Sam. The writing for Sam has left him without much definition. I thought maybe the character very much values truth (objective/fact) over honesty (actions/decisions line up with values/priorities/beliefs (somewhat subjective)) and that would account for the back half of 9. But then he decides to go after Dean (unless he means to stick to the truth: hunters kill demons)-this is more of an “I value family first” (honest) kind of move. I’d like to see Season 10 define Sam as a fully formed adult. Truth is clearly of greater value to him as compared to Dean (that’s a defining characteristic) so the suggestion that he really explore the bunker could be awesome. Maybe he takes the lead on them delving more into some “supernatural cold cases” he comes across. I’d like to see them solidify him as a unique, working partner with Dean.
Wishlist: Castiel. For me Cas is as much a part of “Supernatural” as the brothers. He didn’t arrive three years into things and amp things up. He arrived two and a half weeks in and amped things up. There has been so much growth in Cas and he’s really added so much to the story, not just in mythology but also in relationship with each brother. I’d like to see Cas develop a freestanding relationship with Sam as Sam defines himself. Maybe he helps Sam find antiquated reference books or acts as a reference himself. Cas will always be Dean’s comrade-in-arms (both are soldiers) but I’d like to see the growth we saw in S09 between Cas and Sam continue. I’ve already mentioned how interesting a cross-species romance might be 🙂
Wishlist: Crowley. If he’s going to be a proper “King of Hell” Crowley needs to be a bit more ruthless. In S10 I’d like to see them do that and keep up the snark and sarcasm.
Wishlist: brothers. I’ve already touched on this a bit, as has almost everyone else! I really want to see a little more TLC/understanding between the boys. More humorous moments, more teasing based on idiosyncrasies that don’t devalue the other person (equal without being the same) would be nice. Brothers know all the buttons and can be inclined to push them. They don’t need to understand “why”, they need to understand “that” the other one behaves/does/likes etc. differently. They can have differences as big as Sam would routinely sacrifice anyone (except Dean) for the greater good vs. Dean finding any single sacrifice unacceptable. Those differences and situations are where conflict should come from.
-contains spoilers for any one who is seriously behind the times-
My wish list is pretty one sided. It involves everything Castiel. Admittedly, he is the only reason I keep watching the show. It has been said, and I must agree, he’s the only character that is really evolving. The rest are just stuck running in the same circles. And come on…he was just so cool right from the start. The thing that makes great characters and stories can be summed up in one word: conflict. Castiel had intrigue and conflict to boot. He was a good soldier starting to question orders.
So, my wishes are thus. I wish that Castiel would go back to his original sloppy hair. Get his original coat back. Get his tie back. And get his grace and wings back. And get some of his cool soldier-ness back.
What made the character so cool when he was first introduced was that he was…well. Cool. He wasn’t all smiley and goofy. I understand he now knows what it is like to be human and blah blah…I still think he smiles too much. There is little to nothing left of his original mystic and awesome. My problem is, I feel he has started to change rather than evolve.
Let me paint the picture of my point with an example. It’s comparable to Santa Clause suddenly loosing his coat and hat…and turning surly instead of jolly. Once you go past a certain point you are no longer developing a character, your changing him. Once you have established some key personality traits and a signature look for a character, you can’t go changing it forever. Sure he had to wear some different clothes for a while, but it’s high time we get more of the old Cass back. Not just his attire, but make him cool again! Not just ” good ol buddy Cass” like he’s a pet.
Still, love the character, but I just don’t want his original potential to be lost to aimless tides of change.
