Robin’s Rambles: Supernatural 9.14 – “Captives”
Robin’s Rambles, Season 9, Episode 14, Captives
Summary
Bunker, a specter! Dean listens to rock. Lights blink. Sam grabs a sword when Dean calls. Sam and Dean meet. The bunker is haunted, despite the sigils. Whoever it is died here. It’s not Kevin, Dean burned him.
Funeral. A man breaks away. Castiel grabs him. Metatron? Rebecca didn’t make war. Bartholomew killed her. He’s a monster.
Their ghost, Kevin, is new at this. Dean talks to the coffee maker as if it were Kevin. I’m sorry, you didn’t choose this life, lost everyone you loved, got killed on my watch. It was on me, I’m so sorry. Kevin starts to flicker and appears. Kevin is stuck in the veil, can’t get to heaven–find my mother. A woman named Candy, who lives in a forest in Wichita, says Mama Tran is alive. Kevin wants the brothers to find Candy and his mother.
Cas is captured by two angels, Bart’s minions.
They bring the coffee maker to search for Candy.
Bart takes Cas’ blade and hugs Cas, seemingly delighted to see him.
The brothers wait inside, candles lit. Dean calls Crowley, who doesn’t pick up. Maybe hHe’s not that into you, quips Sam. The radio goes staticky.
The angels reminisce about battles with Raphael, when Cas was “the great Castiel” and Bart tortured. Now Bart gives orders.
A cold, dark box, says Candy, describing where she and Mrs. Tran were being held prisoner . British men, they tried to escape, but, Candy was stabbed to death from behind. Mrs. Tran might be alive. She is alive, and screaming!
The brothers head to save Linda Tran from where Crowley has been holding her prisoner for God knows how long.
Bart assures Cas he’s free to go. What can he do on his own? They both want to find Metatron, restore heaven. They disagree about Rebecca’s murder.
The brothers enter a motel as FBI and demand records. The clerk is reluctant, Dean insistent. Sam notes storage units rented by D. Webster. Crowley in-joke. Dean and the clerk check one unit, Sam another, and finds Mama Tran. But someone locks them both in and the clerk watches them on camera and knocks out Dean.
Bart shows Cas on-earth sightings of Metatron. Bart wants Cas by his side, here and eventually in heaven. A rebel is brought in, bound, his face covered by a black bag. Bart wants Cas to help him torture him.
Sam frees Linda from her bonds and works on the electric plate of the door. She thinks Kevin is still alive, and he doesn’t have the heart to tell her otherwise. She angrily orders him to shine the flashlight where she needs it.
Dean comes to, hands bound. Crowley left the bitter demon clerk in charge. Feeding the apes, hosing the floors, getting no credit. Worst part? He wasn’t even allowed to kill anyone! He won’t even get a thank you for capturing the Winchesters! That’s true, Dean tells him–he’s friends with Crowley now. This job bows, I quit! the clerk declares.
Having tortured the rebel and learned nothing, Bart wants Cas to prove his loyalty by killing the rebel. Cas refuses, insisting there’s another way. My only choice was to obey or be killed, realizes Cas. Bart plunges the knife into the rebel angel over Cas’s protests.
The clerk asks Dean, “Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve done this? Thank you for reminding me who I really am.” And he starts to slice open Dean’s throat, leaving a bloody trail. Sam bursts in, preventing Dean from being stabbed to death.
As your refusal makes perfectly clear, you always thought you were better than me, says Bart, punching Cas twice in the face. Cas says no, angels fighting angels must stop somewhere, might as well stop with me. First Bart has Cas at knifepoint, then Cas has Bart at knifepoint. Cas drops the knife on the floor. There can be no peace without bloodshed, insists Bart, and moves to attack Cas, who turns the tables and kills him. He orders the two guards, “Let me pass.” They do. Cas leaves.
Sam and Dean allow Linda to kill her jailer, who they have bound. After she does, she commands, “Take me to my son.”
Bunker – The brothers call for Kevin and assure him they saved his mother. Linda feels Kevin is bound to his father’s ring. She wants to keep him safe as long as she can.
Cas prays to Rebecca’s grave, apologizing for the chaos, praising her for trying a new way. An angel touches his shoulder and says he chooses Cas as his leader; he wants to follow him, as do others. Indeed, two other angels stand there, both also wanting to follow Cas.
Bunker – Kevin considers his mother his responsibility. And you’re ours, Sam says. Kevin assures Sam he doesn’t blame him; that’s all on Gadreel. He thanks them. Thank us when we get you to heaven where you belong, says Dean, until then, enjoy your 24/7 time with your mom. Kevin asks them to promise to “get over it,” reminding them that just because they couldn’t see him, he could see them–drama, fighting, stupid. My mom is taking home a ghost. They promise, yet go their separate ways without exchanging a word.
Questions
1. So Kevin asked the brothers to cut it out, they promised, but they went to separate rooms without speaking. That bothered me. You?
2. Bart was dispatched quickly in this episode. Were you glad or disappointed?
3. Were you sad when Mama Tran was asking about Kevin? I was. While I knew it was a possibility she was alive, I cringed at every mention of Kevin.
4. I was bugged because there was no Cas with the brothers. Did you find that weird, too?
5. This ep might need another watching or two, but at this point, I only give it a 7. That’s my impression after only one viewing. You?
6. I do love the idea of Mama Tran and Kevin keeping each other company for a while, as long as he doesn’t become hostile. Finding out her son was dead must have been awful for Linda.
7. Don’t you hate Crowley for keeping Linda prisoner like this?
I do not find it odd that Cas was not with the brothers throughout the episode. Both Cas and then Sam & Dean have their hands plenty full with their own issues/problems. Cas & the brothers stories will not always intersect or include the other – that is nothing new for SPN. Cas is deep into the angel war & that is not something the Winchesters can really be apart of – it is angels angling amongst themselves. Cas is also without his full powers so it is not like he can just pop in & out & go wherever. He cannot & should not be hanging out at the bunker while heaven is in such limbo.
I have a real hard time understanding some fans desire for the boys & Cas to be this “Team Free Will,” or whatever all the time. It is completely unrealistic for the lives they lead as humans & an angel.
Last nights episode frustrated me for a number of reasons. I think the episode was great for Cas – it really allowed him to shine & opened the door for his possible redemption. I liked Cas. He was back to his badass self – my favorite flavor of Cas. I think the episode was great for Mama Tran and Kevin. You really felt for both, and both handled this situations with such grace. I liked Mama Tran and Kevin.
Sam & Dean on the other hand? The writers are doing them NO favors and it is frustrating. Carver says the brothers are suppose to be maturing, but instead we see them acting like 10 year-olds. Neither is being portrayed in a great light.
Sam & Dean are suppose to be the heros of the story – SPN is suppose to be their story. So why are the writers writing the characters to make us want to root for EVERYONE but Sam & Dean. I just want to slap them both. Why does it feel like Sam & Dean are becoming secondary characters in their own show? Why are the brothers being dumbed down to allow guest characters to shine, or being made to look like rookie hunters?
I have no problem with split screen time/story lines like we got last night, but SPN needs to give the brothers the same quality characterizations & insight we are getting to Cas & other guest characters like Barth. We got more insight inside Barth’s head than Sam’s – there is no excuse for that.
Last night Sam & Dean felt like an after thought – simply secondary characters hanging out in the background. And that’s not okay.
I 100% believe there can be a great balance achieved that will allow the SPN universe to be enriched by more characters, but right now the writers seem to be stomping on the brothers without thought & I really feel like this contrived fighting is hurting the quality of SPN.
Sam & Dean are the emotional center of SPN, so when they don’t work, SPN doesn’t work.

This question (1. So Kevin asked the brothers to cut it out, they promised, but they went to separate rooms without speaking. That bothered me. You?)
Should be like this.
1. So Kevin asked the brothers to cut it out, they promised, but Sam went to his room without even saying a word, this bothered me. What about You?
From Dean’s side as i know he wanted to talk, but as Sam walked away without even looking at Dean.
What would Dean had done then at that time.
My thinking is that Sam doesn’t want to make things better with Dean.
Hate me if you want to. Because i’m on Dean’s side.
(Pudding) 😀

I don’t think that Sam can talk about it yet. He is still trying to sort out everything that has just happened to him. He didn’t say the words to Mrs. Tran but she knew what Sam wasn’t saying. That is why she looked so devastated and angrily told Sam to hold the flashlight. So basically Sam was the one that had to tell Mrs. Tran that Kevin was dead. That on top of finding that Kevin wasn’t even in heaven. And watching mom and ghost walk out of the bunker. I think that Sam just isn’t in that place yet. Dean wants it to be over. He wants Sam to forgive him so that he can move on from his own guilt. They just aren’t on the same page yet.
Side note: Is Dean not sleeping? This is the second episode that looked like Dean wasn’t sleeping.

Robin, to answer your questions:
1. So Kevin asked the brothers to cut it out, they promised, but they went to separate rooms without speaking. That bothered me. You?
I like SeanJones’ rephrasing of that question. I was more disappointed than bothered. But at least Sam hesitated at his door so maybe we’ll get somewhere soon. And Dean’s look at the end – I couldn’t really decide what I was seeing. Anger? Stubbornness? Maybe he was thinking though. They’ll get there. Not worried.
2. Bart was dispatched quickly in this episode. Were you glad or disappointed?
Naw. Indifferent.
3. Were you sad when Mama Tran was asking about Kevin?
Hmm. I wasn’t sad. Wonder what that says about me. 🙂
4. I was bugged because there was no Cas with the brothers. Did you find that weird, too?
Nope. Gotta go out there and figure out how to fight his war. Sam & Dean, like said before, have their own battles right now.
5. This ep might need another watching or two, but at this point, I only give it a 7. That’s my impression after only one viewing. You?
Running around the bunker, talking about the haunting, the awkwardness I felt watching them every time they were together – that does something for me. I’m weird. I’m thinking 9, but I’ve seen it 3 times so far and I grade on a curve.
6. I do love the idea of Mama Tran and Kevin keeping each other company for a while, as long as he doesn’t become hostile. Finding out her son was dead must have been awful for Linda.
I kept thinking to myself when she saw him, as illogical as it may have been, why didn’t she reach out for him? It’s just what came to my mind. I know that’s how I would have reacted. I suspect she is going to make this work. Hope we get to see them again.
7. Don’t you hate Crowley for keeping Linda prisoner like this?
Uhhh, not really because I kept thinking she was alive which meant Crowley had her so….there you go.
My additional thought? It was interesting to me that Dean was on one side of that bed. I remember as a kid (I had a queen-sized bed) and as a single person, I slept in the middle automatically. As a married person, even when my husband isn’t home, I – without thinking – tend to stay on my side. Now, this is NOT to stir up the shippers because that ain’t what I mean. It just made me think he might have gotten used to that side when he was with Lisa and now it just looks like a visual way to show how alone he is right now.

I just loved this episode!
1-no, I was not bothered that Sam was still unwilling to let it go yet. Very human and I like that the forgiving and forgetting is being prolonged. I do enjoy the pain they cause me and I enjoy that, like many family issues, it isn’t just “ok, all is well.” Plus I have confidence that all will become well.
2- as with many characters on this show, they become interesting and then get dead. I was not sure about Bart in the beginning, but he had a great and deserved end.
3-so sad when Linda had to find out about Kevin 🙁
4-Cas had his own story, I don’t need to see him always attached to the Winchesters.
5-10
6-Mama dead, Kevin alive and suffering, now Kevin dead and Mom alive and suffering. Poor Trans!
7-That’s Crowley, or it was. Why didn’t he return after he was released from the bunker?
This season is just so good so far!

I liked this episode. I particularly liked the opening scene in the bunker – and Cas becoming the unwilling leader – again. To answer the questions:
1. I was so happy when Sam agreed, then Kevin left, Dean started to talk to his brother, and Sam left. Aghhhh. I wanted to reach into the tv, grab Sam by the scruff of the neck (okay, the back of his knee, since that would be easier to reach) and make him come back and talk to his brother.
2. I was surprised he was eliminated so quickly. But – glad it was Cas who did it. Nice to have badass Cas back.
3. I have always found Linda annoying, but felt badly for her in this episode, and was happy she and Kevin were reunited. However, it bugs me when the writers dumb down the lead characters in order to make minor characters look smart. We have had 8 and 1/2 seasons of Sam dismantling sophisticated alarm systems, and suddenly he goes duh and Linda has to step in? Really?
4. I was fine with Cas being on his own for this episode. The pals will come together for the big battle, like always.
5. Really? Only a 7? While not a 10 for me, I would give this a 9. Strong, entertaining episode, moved the story forward, tied up a couple of the smaller threads, had some humor, had a couple good Winchester moments, all good.
6 and 7. As with everyone on this show, including the lead characters, everyone suffers, so sort of expect the pain and loss. And, Crowley is the King of Hell, so yes, we love to hate him. He is a very fun villain.

1. YES!!!
2. Glad. Cas gives an awesome display of self-defense.
3. Yes. It was so beautifully cringe-worthy to watch her honor her son’s sacrifice and carry on gallantly.
4. No. Wasn’t Bart’s point Cas has been doing his own thing. Back-burner: Cas might minutely resent Dean for kicking him out of the bunker, not telling him about Sam, or asking him for help despite no longer being an angel?)
5. 8 but only because of Osric.
6. I know!!! We’ve watched Kevin grow up so much in such a short time. Enjoy your time, and ultimately RIP Kevin!
7. No. We may love Mark’s charisma but Crowley is still the king of HELL.
Sidenotes: Thinkin’ cheryl42 and digyn are right. Speaking of Lisa…is that her in the new 7 UP commercials?

Agreed Grace! Totally wanted to snag Sam by the shirt tail and make them talk!

1. So Kevin asked the brothers to cut it out, they promised, but they went to separate rooms without speaking. That bothered me. You? Nope. They’re still at a stalemate. Dean wants Sam to just get over it. Sam wants assurances that Dean won’t do what he did again and so far, Dean isn’t budging. Unfortunately, Dean has no concept of what he did wrong, is not sorry for it and is perfectly okay with doing the exact same thing again so I gotta say, I’m very glad Sam stood his ground on this occasion because he’d have folded if this was two seasons ago. Maybe if they drag this out for another 7 episodes (last season Dean was pissed at Sam for 10) Dean might realise that this is something Sam can’t just over because he tells him to.
2. Bart was dispatched quickly in this episode. Were you glad or disappointed? Much of a muchness, really. He was terribly underused.

I don’t know if Kevin would become hostile. I mean, technically, he choose to move on, that’s why he’s in the waiting room, as it were. I think if he choose not to move on when he met his reaper then he might become hostile.
7. Don’t you hate Crowley for keeping Linda prisoner like this? Crowley is a negotiator. He knows Mrs. Tran is worth more alive than dead. Though, in truth, all I could think of for most of this episode was ‘Seriously Dean, you kicked the crap out of Sam for more than half a year because he believed you were dead. However, you believed Mrs. Tran was dead despite being told she was alive! What the hell gives??’. However, I’m going to add that to the list of things that Dean did similar to Sam that will never be mentioned again……

However, you believed Mrs. Tran was dead despite being told she was alive! What the hell gives??’. However, I’m going to add that to the list of things that Dean did similar to Sam that will never be mentioned again……
When Sam grabbed Ms. Tran’s hand and she saw the look on his face, I thought she knew that Kevin was dead. Her whole demeanor changed which is why she didn’t seem surprised at the bunker that he was a ghost.
Having experienced Ms. Tran’s pain and anger over Kevin in the storage unit, I felt Sam was clearly saddened and hurting himself back at the bunker. He tried to apologize to Kevin even though he had no control whatsoever of what happened to Kevin. In contrast, Dean makes a joke about 24/7 quality time, clearly to mask his own pain. So I totally get why Sam had to go to his room.
In that last scene I saw pain and stubbornness in Dean’s face. But he’s not the only one in pain. Kevin is dead and stuck in the veil. Ms. Tran was tortured and lost her son. Sam is suffering from survivor’s guilt and Dean’s betrayal. And Dean is suffering from guilt. And to add insult to injury, it turns out Crowley told the truth about Kevin’s mother, Dean told him Crowley was lying. It’s a mess.
I watch SPN for the brother’s talks and felt a little cheated last night. But with all these flaming emotions it’s probably best they didn’t talk. Time out.
I never cared about the angel or demon war, but now I see how it all comes together. The mark of Cain gives the Winchesters a stake in the demon war and now Kevin stuck in the veil, plus Castiel leading the angels gives them a stake in the angel war. I was proud of Cas last night.
I’d give it a 9 just because there was no movement on the brother issue.

1 – So Kevin asked the brothers to cut it out, they promised, but they went to separate rooms without speaking. That bothered me. You? Absolutely not; Dean wants to go back to status quo, things aren’t going to change unless Sam initiates it and he’s not ready yet – getting closer though. If it goes back to status quo, this will all have been a waste of everyone’s time.
2 – Bart was dispatched quickly in this episode. Were you glad or disappointed? Meh – he was boring in a Dick Roman kind of way.; they never really did much with his character anyway.
3 – Were you sad when Mama Tran was asking about Kevin? I was. While I knew it was a possibility she was alive, I cringed at every mention of Kevin. Very sad, but happy that Sam didn’t lie to her.
4 – I was bugged because there was no Cas with the brothers. Did you find that weird, too? I’m fine with it – Cas has a boatload of crap to deal with.
5 – This ep might need another watching or two, but at this point, I only give it a 7. That’s my impression after only one viewing. You? Rewatching it tonight – would give it a 7 or 8.
6 – I do love the idea of Mama Tran and Kevin keeping each other company for a while, as long as he doesn’t become hostile. Finding out her son was dead must have been awful for Linda. I’m with Dean on this – we don’t know enough about what’s going on, whether Kevin will go vengeful or not. He didn’t choose to stay behind – does that make a difference? Maybe that’s why there are so many rogue reapers, they’re out of a regular job and need to freelance now 😆
7 – Don’t you hate Crowley for keeping Linda prisoner like this? Crowley is smart, and Crowley is Crowley – Mrs. Tran was worth more alive than dead.

Seemed clear that Dean wanted to talk, Sam didn’t. I get that Sam’s having trouble dealing with his issues but it’s really getting to a stage where it feels like he’s just punishing Dean to be cruel. On purpose. Not cool, Sam. And for those about to jump down my throat about Sam’s survivors guilt etc, believe me, I get it. But in all honesty, the way Sam’s been acting seems more “I’m pissed at Dean so I’m going to be a spiteful little bitch” than “I’m struggling with deep emotional turmoil and I have no one to reach out to”. Sam actually looks like he’s processing what’s happened to him and dealing with it, but just not dealing with his anger at Dean. Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s just the way it’s coming across to me.
Also, just as an aside, in regards to the whole ‘Dean needs to learn so that he doesn’t make the same mistakes again’, I actually read a very interesting post on another forum that makes some very cogent arguments for the fact that Dean saving Sam may have actually done more good than harm rather than the other way around as we’re supposed to believe.
Amongst other things, without Gadreel possessing Sam, Cas would be dead. Like properly, no coming back, dead (which as an aside to an aside – what happens to an angel’s spirit when it dies? Do angel’s have spirits? hmmm).
Re stopping sam from completing the trials – If locking the gates of heaven means that the good spirits can’t get in, what are the implications of locking the gates of hell? Dead murderers, war criminals and rapists wandering around with funky ghost powers? Not a pleasant thought.
Kevin would still be dead – remember he was at the top of Metatron’s kill list. Even if Gadreel hadn’t been possessing Sam, Metatron would have found a way to get to Kevin. Finishing off the line of Prophets was literally his number one priority after becoming King of an empty heaven. Crowley would have been either human or dead. Human Crowley may have been interesting, but would have been a fairly dead end plot line. Similar to human Cas.
(Again, the above points re consequences of a dead Sam were not thought of by me. I read them on another forum and thought I’d share here – so no yelling at me for plagiarising! Full credit to the original poster for thinking things through so well. haha). I have only one thing to add: Sam would be dead. Like, dead. Morals/reality checks aside, do you really think there’s any way in hell the writers would have allowed that (unless it was the very final episode of the series)?

On the fence. Love seeing badass Cas back. But I do feel there was a lot of unused potential in Bart as a villain.
3.
More sad at watching Sam figure out how to tell her the truth. Also, I love Mama Tran. I’m glad she’s back. She always struck me as having potential to be a genuine hunter in her own right. Far more so than Kevin who was forced into the life of a prophet. I hope we see Ghost Kevin and Ms Tran at least once more before the current angel/closed heaven arc is done.
4.
I didn’t find it weird per se. As others say, Cas and the boys really do have separate issues to deal with so it makes sense that they run their own missions separately. Especially for Cas with his powers at least partially restored. He doesn’t need to keep running to the bros for a pow-wow. That being said, I think I get what you’re driving at. I miss the interactions between the three. “Team Free Will”, although not necessary all the time, does have a charm of its own.
5.
TBH, I loved it. I’m a big fan of the Trans and loved seeing the cas/bart storyline. I was disappointed that the bro drama didn’t seem anywhere closer to being resolved but I think there were some really good Winchester moments in there too. 9 for me.
6.
Agreed. I’d hate it if he turned into a hostile spirit. Even as Ghost Kevin, he’s kicking ass as a character. He seems to have his shit together more than the bros which says something really
7.
Yes. But that’s the whole point. With so much ally/human/likeable Crowley screen time, I imagine the writers wanted to remind us that he is still a demon, King of Hell (sorta) and essentially a villain.

#12 Any good or harm that happened to others as a result of Dean saving Sam is irrelevant to the argument at hand. It is the deception, the violation of Sam’s free will that is being called in to question.

I found this ep kinda meh overall, except for the scenes with Kevin and Mama Tran. I was unhappy because there were no scenes with Cas and the Winchesters. WTF? Boring! But I agree that Cas and the brothers had separate agendas in this ep and it was necessary for them to tend to them apart. I guess I just miss Team Free Will, as several of you pointed out here. I don’t expect the conflict between the brothers to end just because Kevin lectured them, nor should it! It’s serious this time, damn it! I felt sorry for Dean, listening to his lonely song, but I fully believe that when this matter is resolved, it will be resolved once and for all time between Sam and Dean. Love, Robin

If Sam were an object that is a fine argument, but he’s a person and his decisions on what should be done about his own body must rule. Thousands of people die because they need a transplant but can’t find a donor, but no suggests that everyone who dies should be required to donate organs irregardless of their beliefs, or desires, and these people are actually dead and do not have to live with the consequences. Dean didn’t do what he did to make the world better, or because he had any idea that saving Sam would have any result other than saving Sam.
If you want to go by the ruler of the good coming out of being possessed by Gadreel then you have to look at if Dean had turned his own body over to Gadreel instead of Sam’s. Gadreel could have saved Charlie and defeated the Wicked Witch because he would not have been using his energy to heal Sam. Gadreel could have been more active in the fight against Abaddon. Yet I don’t hear any cries for Dean to make the sacrifice of HIS body for the cause. Ordering Sam to feel good that his body was violated because good things happened so Sam should ignore the bad things that happened AND the violation of himself isn’t something that I can agree with.
I agree with this
Tim the Enchanter 2014-02-26 17:20 1.
So, I’ll attempt to answer the questions:
1. Yes but not surprised. That’s as much as I’m saying on the subject because I’ve said what I think once elsewhere and there’s more than enough on the subject around here for the next 10 years.
2. Was a bit surprised but with only 10 episodes left there isn’t really a lot of time develop the character further since they didn’t before. Metatron is the main bad angel to focus on so Bart’s demise needed to happen … some of his faction left to follow Cas and the others may follow suit as word spreads or they could just scatter.
3. Very much so … always would have been sad but as a mother with a son it really made me want to go hug my little man! But he was sleeping at the time so let him sleep!
4. A bit but for this episode they had their own things going on … I’ve been more upset over the course of the season at the lack of TFW moments but it’s been explainable. Hoping there will be some in the future … pretty please?
5. I’d do an 8
6. I’m just happy that they’re together and hope that the boys and/or Cas can get Heaven reopened before he turns … Keven doesn’t seem as angry as Bobby was so might take him a lot longer anyway.
7. Hate Crowley? Hmmm … well he’s a demon and he must’ve done that well before Sam tried to cure him so it doesn’t surprise me. More upset he didn’t come clean with her actual whereabouts while Kevin was still alive but, again, he’s a demon and still thought of more as leverage. I’m glad she’s alive and I’m sure the boys will let him know that was wrong!

absolutely not. if you put in perspective all that sam had been through that day:
confronting kevin, whom sam feels responsible for killing.
being locked in a room with the mother of the kid he killed.
having to tell mrs tran that her son was dead, and i can’t imagine sam had the ability to tell her it was by him.
having all that guilt in sam resurface all over again.
then having kevin release sam of all that guilt, laying blame on gadreel and not sam. ( i’m surprised sam didn’t cry on the spot)
leaving both boys to promise to let it go. they didn’t promise it would happen at that moment by the way.
i think sam was on emotional overload. the moment kevin started walking away with his mom, sam started leaving the room. he was 2 steps away from the entrance way when dean started talking and realized he wasn’t standing there,
i don’t think sam left the room to avoid dean, as he was already out the door as dean spoke.
i think sam left because he had quite an emotionally eventful day and he needed to be alone to deal with it all. that’s not to say that he didn’t mean his promise to kevin and judging by his hesitation and pained expression before entering his room, one can see just how much sam is struggling to reconcile what dean did to him with the fact that he knows dean did it out of love.
if sam were standing by dean, dean turned around to talk and then sam walked away, then i can see that sam was avoiding dean…and i still would understand that and not fault him for it.
sam’s still reeling from everything that dean has done to him. he’s still processing the trauma of the possession. and he’s trying to reconcile all of it.
not to mention dean still hasn’t apologized to sam. he can apologize to kevin, ( who he is perfectly willing to let die again, because dean would do it all over,) via a coffee maker, but he can’t say i’m sorry to his own brother.
two words from dean and maybe sam would make himself ready to talk to his brother.
