More Details on Supernatural Tribes
From TVLine
The Windy City is on the brink of all-out war. New intel has surfaced about The CWโs Chicago-based planted Supernatural spin-off, Supernatural: Tribes, and it points to an epic battle involving five rival monster families and a vengeance-seeking hunter.
Read on for exclusive details on the key players populating the offshoot (all of whom will be introduced in this seasonโs 20th episode of Supernatural).
ENNIS ROTH | The de-facto star of the potential series, Ennis is โlikeable, strong-willed, resolute, with a strong sense of justice.โ Heโs the son of a cop who grew up in poverty. Heโs en route to the police academy himself when someone he is close to is murdered โ presumably by some kind of monster. He meets up with Sam and Dean and โlearns the staggering truthโ that Chicago is run by five families of monsters (including, but perhaps not limited to, werewolves and shape shifters). And with that, a new monster-hunter is born. Fun fact: Producers are looking to fill this role with an African-American actor in his early 20s.
DAVID HAYDEN | A shape-shifter from one of Chicagoโs ruling monster families. Heโs been living as a human for some time, but a tragedy propels him back into the life. David is in his early 20s.
MARGO HAYDEN | Davidโs โprofessional, strong-willed, determined, ambitiousโ shape-shifter sister. Sheโs an โex-punk rocker gone corporateโ who sets out to be the new head of the family in the wake of a tragedy. Margo is in her early 20s.
VIOLET DURANT | A werewolf and part of the wealthy, powerful Durant family. In a twist right out of West Side Story, the early-twentysomething is hot for family rival David (see above), but their love is forbidden.
JULIAN DURANT | Violetโs โsavagely handsome, strong, arrogantโ twentysomething brother and Ennisโ arch nemesis.
FREDDIE COSTA | A world-weary copy in his 30s, Freddie has a soft spot in his heart for Ennis (he knew his dad back in the day). Fun fact: Eddieโs got a secret.
I’m going to give this a shot, but I don’t know if this will work or not. Unless they’re bringing Leonard Bernstien back from the dead, a new West Side Story isn’t my particular cup of tea. I am excited to see they are actually looking to cast a minority in one of the lead roles. This sounds more like Vampire Diaries or The Originals to me. I like and watch both of those, but so far, this doesn’t sound like a Supernatural spinoff.
I like the way Supernatural has written monsters so I may like this show too. I would really like to see werewolves and shape shifters with their own culture and religion. Not a human culture and god but something unique to them. Shouldn’t they also wonder, as humans do, where they came from and what happens to them after death?

I’m excited to see the pilot, but I’m keeping my reservations until I see how good is the writing. It’s just me or Benny would’ve been a good character for this spin-off? …And Kevin… And Jodi Mills… I’ll give it a shot, but I was hoping… I don’t know… for them to use a character from SPN , like they did for “Torchwood” or “Angel” … or … for Ben Edlund to come back and run this thing?… maybe in my dreams…but that it would be a great spin-off!!

Perhaps I’m getting too old, but I’m not sure about this at all, mainly because I don’t really see how this is a spin-off from Supernatural. What unique elements of the show are going to be there? Or are they just being replaced by a lot generic story-lines and characters? Of course, I also have a problem in that I am really a fan of Sam and Dean (plus their significant others), and they are the main part of what I love about SPN, the monsters and stuff are incidental. I guess it will depend on how the “pilot” shapes up!!

I also agree with you that this doesn’t sound like a SPN spin-off. More like The Original meets Almost Human. “Tribes” would be a more appropriate name than “Supernatural:Tribes”

It actually made me think of Lost Girl without the sexy times and monsters instead of Fae. Maybe if I watched The Vampire Diaries or The Originals I would see the same parallels though. I can totally see the Being Human vibe though.
I don’t know, it doesn’t really feel like a spin-off without a SPN character, but maybe it will still be delightful, I’ll wait until the episode airs to decide.

I thought of Lost Girl as well. Since I love Lost Girl this may work out. I’m certainly going to give it a fair shot. The Romeo and Juliette part doesn’t catch me, but they may put a different spin on it.

I’m really disappointed in these descriptions. As a Chicago native, I am very, very tired of the city being portrayed through a stereotype of “mob families” running the streets. Al Capone/ prohibition was a few years in our history almost a century ago! This sounds like a very strange rehash of an already trite misconception. I’ll give it a try but I’m REALLY disappointed. (the image that came to my mind was Angel fighting the vampire lawyers!)

I’m keeping an open mind and hoping for the best. The quality of the writing and the chemistry between the characters is what will ultimately make or break this one.
I do hope they don’t try to overcomplicate the story by introducing too many characters and storylines at once. I think a show works best when they give you one or two primary characters to connect with and bring in the rest over time. It sets the tone for the series and allows us time to get to know the primary players before introducing the secondaries. Starting too many storylines and characters too quickly makes it difficult to figure out which ones to invest in and give a crap about and which ones are going to end up being a dead end.
I am thinking of early Supernatural and how it was initially just Sam and Dean for a while before they brought in Bobby. Dad, Meg, and Yellow Eyes.
Here’s hoping for the best. We could always use another great show.

I am not sure how this will work out. The write up of the basics of the series don’t give me much hope, but maybe it will be more clever than the description dictates? I am especially tired of the banal and redundant casting of all of these “savagely good looking 20-something” kids. Zzzzzzzโฆ.What a totally snooze and utterly predictable. Can’t there even be one character with some life experience and some scruff? Can’t there be one female over 40? Why do all the new shows look like the living embodiment of a Teen Beat magazine with all of these girlie looking little boys without facial hair and tiny fragile looking females with windswept hair and lip gloss? Where are the Jeffrey Dean Morgans of this world with his sizzle, smolder, toughness and facial hair? This just doesn’t seem all that creative to me. I envision lots of dark, shadowy scenes and intense close ups of blank stares that are supposed to represent “emoting.” In the theatre world we call it schmacting. The only remotely interesting casting information is that of a Black male actor in the lead role. I really hope that comes to fruition. TV is still entirely too homogenous for my tastes (and male too). Opera is WAY ahead of TV, Film and Theatre in this respect.

Doesn’t there have to be some actual characters from SPN for the series to be called SPN spin-off?

@#9E: Oh thank you, thank you, thank you for saying this so eloquently. You had me rofl in total agreement with this. CW is the bastion for this kind of stuff and Supernatural is the only show I watch on this station. Part of the reason for that is that it has grown people in it.
The descriptions are not inspiring a lot of confidence and also the show may not get picked up as a series based on how the pilot goes but it sounds like some show they already have called The Originals. And I’m sick o death of the Romeo and Juliet /Westside Story trope. Seriously!
And thank you once again for introducing me to the word “schmacting “. Good Chuck, I cant stand that. It was the reasonI stopped watching Smallville, never even looked at Vampire Diaries, hated Beauty and the Beast before it even airs and refuse to be drawn into Arrow, no matter how good people say it is and I’m just going to ignore Tommorrow People completely.

The thing is casting descriptions are meant to extremely broad in characterizations. But this really does sound more like any CW show, than something that grew out of SPN.
But then again, there is no guarantee that this will go to series, since it’s only a backdoor pilot.

So Andrew Dabb will be the showrunner? In my opinion he is stronger on comedy and weaker in drama. He wrote some of my favorite comedic episode (Yellow Fever, Frontierland, Sam, Interrupted), but also one of my least favorite in all 9 seasons – Dark Side of the Moon. But him as a writer doesn’t predict how will be as a showrunner. Hopefully, he will have a strong team by his side. Even this will turn out not to be my thing, I really hope this spin-off will be successful.

I wasn’t aware that they had picked a showrunner yet. I think Dabb is just writing that episode–which from what I understand, is purely a cyclical thing, basically it was his turn to write an episode–it just happens to be the backdoor pilot episode. There’s no guarantee it will even go to series, so I don’t think they have a showrunner for it yet.
I guess it doesn’t have to have SPN characters to be a spinoff, but for some reason this just doesn’t feel like it came from SPN. Like I said, I’ll have to wait and see what becomes of this episode…it could be rather delightful.

He heee! I was thinking of Smallville when I wrote that!! An absolute perfect example of ‘schmacting.’ You can even see at the end of an emotional scene that the actors have to hold for the camera closeup. Utterly unconvincing IMO.

I actually hope that Andrew Dabb ISN”T the show runner for the spin-off. He’s become one of Supernaturals stronger writers and I’d hate to see yet another one of them get snapped up by another show. The loss of BE still weighs heavyโฆ. ๐

Amen, E. I am so tired of whiny, mopey, angst ridden teenyboppers and twenty somethings that I could just scream. If Tribes starts that crap up, I’ll bail on it in a New York second. By the way, does Kristen Stewart have any facial expressions besides that sullen pout of hers? Just asking. ๐

there was a vampire show with five families and the lead died. I forget the name of the show but this sounds like an off-shoot of that.
cant they have a MEN OF LETTERS spin-off or SUPERNATURAL ACADEMY…..
we need some people with age and WISDOM also not just young adults.
only monsters does not feel imo to be SPN

I only watch SPN on the CW as well. I cant say it’s because of the young people and I live in New Orleans.
I adore TEEN WOLF but yes they have ‘Adults’ and every age BAD GUYS ๐ฎ
If a show does not have a character from the show to me it is NOT a spin-off.

I must say im a bit disappointed.I was hoping for some “Gadreel” or someone like him spin-off who is healing the original tribes from The Garden through sins of our fathers…

Nothing i’ve read so far interests me. Doesn’t seem like a “spin-off” of my show.
One I’d like to see would be ‘Grumpy Old Hunters’ with Bobby and Rufus. ๐ I loved every time they were on together.

I am always spin-off reluctant, but this sounds…um…not my cup o tea (to be mild). I agree with some that the monster genre has become a bit crowded and it seems to be losing control.
Many spin-offs did not have current characters (ncis, csi) it’s just a story within the same universe.
I do love some of these comments and I agree, I’d prefer talented to pretty and the cast should be diverse in age, race and gender. So tired of skinny teenage (looking) and white.
I guess we’ll see during this episode if the story they introduce will actually be worth exploring further.
