News is starting to trickle out on the proposed spinoff of “Supernatural”.

Supernatural: Tribes
A spin-off of the CW’s longest-running hit drama, Tribes will be set in Chicago and focus on the battle between monsters and hunters. There’s no casting news yet, but it’s being written by Andrew Dabb (who has written for Supernatural since season 4) and will be directed by Supernatural co-showrunner and frequent director Robert Singer. The backdoor pilot will air as an episode of Supernatural‘s ninth season, like the CW did with The Originals on The Vampire Diaries last year.

The CW announced Wednesday that long running drama “Supernatural” is getting a spinoff. And unlike the original, which follows brothers Dean and Sam Winchester as they hunt ghosts and monsters all over the country, the spinoff, “Supernatural: Tribes” will take place in Chicago.
According to Entertainment Weekly, “Supernatural” executive producer Robert Singer revealed in July during San Diego Comic Con that a potential spinoff would be introduced as a backdoor pilot toward the end of the current “Supernatural” season (You might remember “Chicago Fire” did the same thing with its spinoff, “Chicago PD”). Singer added that the spinoff would “explore the clashing monster and human characters” and that “we’ll have main characters who are both human and monsters (and) families of monsters and families of hunters. … It’s much more of an ensemble than ‘Supernatural.’ ”
The original “Supernatural” is filmed in Vancouver. Will the spinoff film there as well or shoot on-location in Chicago? “No word on them filming here, yet,” said Chicago Film Office director Rich Moskal by email Thursday.
“Supernatural” is known for having one of the most passionate fanbases. There’s even a “Supernatural” convention, which this year will take place Oct. 24-26 at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont. “Supernatural” stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are scheduled to attend.
So we are losing Andrew Dabb to the spinoff? That’s too bad. I also heard that Robert Singer was leaving after the 200th episode as well. Is that true?

cheryl42 – Not at all! They’re aren’t leaving. You’ve got to remember, this is a Pilot. This doesn’t mean that Supernatural Tribes is going to series. It’s even a backdoor pilot, which means it’ll air as a regular Supernatural episode. It’ll be episode 20. The decision to pick it up as a series won’t be made by the network until May.
If the show is picked up, it’s possible that some people involved with Supernatural will go to work on the spinoff, but they usually staff new shows with fresh blood too. Robert Singer would probably be a producer for both, but he’ll definitely stick with Supernatural.

Thanks that is good to know.

So was the Garth episode kind of like an introduction to good monsters and their families and that monsters can be born into the live?
After watching it I thought it was a stand alone and now it might be the introduction for the Spin off.

Awhile back Stephen King recommended a book called “Blood Moon” that was set in the future and dealt with a werewolf society (referred to as Lycan) that followed this same canon. They became Lycan by either being bitten or scratched, blood to blood contact or could be born Lycan. They could also transform at will with practice. I guess because I had read the book it didn’t seem quirky to me in this episode. Possibly it is also setting up some new canon for the spin off.

If someone, anyone can reassure me that it won’t be about Chrissie and her friends I will be much relieved. That it’s about hunters and THEIR families sounds promising but I’m not going to watch anything with teenagers in it. Just not my cup of tea at all.
