Let’s Discuss: How Do You Think Supernatural Might End?
From Alice – We’re shaking things a bit up here in the winter hellatus. I got these words from guest writer Elizabeth and I was intrigued because honestly, I haven’t given much thought as to how “Supernatural” could end. Considering it’s bound to happen sometime, and since December/early January is a prime time to stretch our imaginations, I figured why not share this bit of creativity on the subject. Below is what Elizabeth sent to me. After you read what she has to share, let’s take some time and ponder the notion.
Happy Hellatus! Or not. While we while away the holidays, eating our pie and drinking copious amounts of eggnog, some of us may find ourselves wondering… how might Supernatural end? I’d say that a season 10(or more?) is highly likely, but regardless of when Supernatural ends, it’s sure to be in a way that tears at our souls. There’s been many characters who could come back as the final big bad, but then again Metatron came out of nowhere, and look at how much we hate him! He’s practically the Umbridge of Supernatural. The finale might be against a new character entirely. Some fans think that the future from “The End” could be a possibility, while others scoff and pray that it isn’t. At any rate, here is my idea of how Supernatural might end.

How Supernatural Could End…
Adam is released from Hell(somehow). He fucks shit up, and wants to free Lucifer and Michael to restart the apocalypse. Somehow he has gotten all the rings to open the cage. At the last possible moment, the boys reach him in a big meadow full of flowers, with a few angels guarding him.
“We are so, so sorry.” Dean said. His jaw clenched as he looked down. “Cas, come on, we need you,” he muttered.
“We’ve done a lot of terrible things, but we never should have left you behind. We should have found a way.” Sam said, reaching for Adam’s shoulder.
The angels grabbed Sam as Adam jerked away. Dean stepped forward, but halted when one of the angels put a knife to Sam’s throat.
“But you didn’t. Because I’m not Sam, I’m not Dean.” Adam’s voice was bitter. “I don’t get to be rescued. I was locked up for over a thousand years with two angels with nothing else to do but play with my brain. And you left me there.”
Dean put his hands up.
“We did.” he said carefully. “And we’re sorry-”
“Sorry?” Adam laughed. The noise was dry and grating. His fingers idly rolled the clanking rings.
“That isn’t gonna cut it. I’m letting them out. This battle was going to happen sooner or later anyway, and at least I’ll be able to enjoy watching you die.”
With a smile Adam opened his hand to show the rings, now connected. The wind roared as he began to chant.
With a desperate lunge Sam broke free of the angels, the knife leaving a deep gash on his neck, and tackled Adam. They grappled for a moment before Sam wrenched the rings out of his hand.
“Dean!” Sam bellowed. He flung the rings behind him, toward Dean.
“No!” Adam said, grabbing for Sam’s throat. Blood poured from the wound as Adam dug his fingers into the gash.
But Dean had already dived for the rings, frantically pulling a small brown satchel out of his pocket as he fell. He threw it on top of the rings, then flicked his lighter.
Nothing.
“Come on!” Dean said desperately. Sammy was shouting in pain, and Adam’s furiously screamed for the angels to get Dean. Two of them raced forward, snarling. One grabbed Dean by the throat, as the other pulled out a knife. Then, suddenly, the sound of wings. Both angels screamed as Cas stabbed them, then whirled to attack the other angels. Dean gasped for breath, and frantically groped for the lighter in the grass.
“Come on, come on,” Dean said, flicking the lighter. Cas was smiting demons left and right, but more were coming. The lighter sparked, catching the fuse that dangled from the bag. Dean scrambled to his feet and ran toward Sammy…
BOOM
The explosion tore the air apart. Dean could feel himself being flung, and heard a snap as he landed wrong on his leg. For a moment everything was still.
The camera pans out. Adam has been flung by the explosion, and lies on his back. His eyes stare blankly at the sky. He is dead.
Panning further out, the camera shows Dean, Sam, and Cas. They are all lying near each other, some distance from Adam. Cas’ angel blade was in his hand when he was explosion went off, but now it is sticking halfway out of his chest.
”Sam? Sam?” Dean coughed. His ears were ringing. “Cas?”
Cas groaned, trying to sit up. ”I’m here, Dean. I… I was too late.” He looked down, dimly staring at the blade sticking out of his chest.
“Where’s Sammy?” Dean asked. He tried to roll over, then cried out as his leg crumpled beneath him.
Cas slowly sat up, in spite of the blood seeping through his trenchcoat. Turning, he saw Sam lying some ten feet from Dean. His throat was wide open, and cuts covered his face. Cas hesitated.
“He’s… he’s gone, Dean.”
“Sammy…” Dean’s face crumpled. He clenched his jaw, trying to breathe through the pain of his leg.
“Dean, my sword…” Cas said haltingly.
”What?” Dean gasped as he rolled onto his stomach.
“I…”
Dean turned his head in the direction of Cas’ voice. His eyes widened when he saw the blade.
”No. No.” Dean said. ”You have to be ok, Cas. You have to bring back Sammy, you have…” Dean cried out in pain again as he got to his knees.
“Dean…” Cas crumpled to the ground.
A moment passed, then there was a flash. Scorched wings spread out across the grass and the flowers. Dean shook, a tear trailing down his face.
Slowly, agonizingly, he crawled over to Cas’ body.
”Thank you,” Dean said, brushing his hand against the trenchcoat.
Somehow he got to his feet, the pain from his leg making him cry out. He reached down and grabbed Cas’ wrist, then began to drag him. Sammy was close. Dean had to get to Sammy.
Every step was screaming agony, and Cas seemed to weigh more than should be possible. But Dean stepped, and Dean pulled. Finally he reached Sam. Dean collapsed onto the ground.
“Come on, bitch,” Dean said, pulling Sammy into his arms. “Come on, we did it. It’s done.”
And then, miraculously.
“Jerk.”
It was barely even a whisper, and Dean shook as he rocked Sammy. But Sam’s eyes never opened, and Dean could feel Sam’s pulse as it slowed, then stopped. Dean’s heartbeat pounded in his ears. Had it always been so loud? So slow?
The camera pans out. Dean’s eyes flicker shut, Sammy still wrapped in his arms. Cas lies beside them. The flowers in the meadow are blooming as the music begins.
“Carry on my wayward son… there’ll be peace when you are done… lay your weary head to rest… don’t you cry no more”
Cut to black.

So, how do you think “Supernatural” might end? How would you like it to end? Let’s discuss!
(Rules – Do not attack the author for the scene presented. This thread is not to give critciques. Instead, focus on share how you would visualize “Supernatural” ending, or even not visualizing. All disrespectful comments will be edited).
Interesting, though slightly morbid! Thinking about Supernatural ending is like contemplating the death of a family member. I don’t really mind who or what or where or even who dies first because my ‘fade to black’ scene is after they’ve died. They’re in Heaven of course, and they walk into Ash’s bar where everyone is gathered round to welcome them home. No need for words, just hugs and tears. And outside the bar is Baby, because she has a soul and gets to go to Heaven. But wait, we can see someone sidling up to her, running their hands covetously down her shining black bodywork. They get in the front and gun the engine. They tip up the rear view mirror and we see – it’s Chuck. He’s God of course, and all God wanted out of the whole deal was a smooth ride. Baby disappears in a cloud of dust, with Dean in hot pursuit!

If there is going to be a movie they all have to live. So after their latest job (probably saving the world for the umpteenth time) Sam and Dean are sitting in the car at a cross roads. Sam is looking into another job. He looks at Dean and says “zombies or vampires”. Dean looks at Sam smiles, guns the impala as he turns left, fade to black. Although as sad as it sounded I do kind of like Jensen’s ending. 😥

I actually have given this some thought but not to the extent the above writer did. Nice detail.
If there is going to be a movie Id love the series to end with them trapped somewhere. Maybe in Hell or end with them fighting long odds against some sort of world devouring villain. If the series has to end I want the brothers to go out fighting as heroes. I even like the idea of the rest of the world finding this out and reacting accordingly rather than the supernatural still being in the closet. I think such an ending would make the movie feel really epic if there ever is one (crosses fingers) .

But how come you guys think there will be a movie made? Has that been confirmed / hinted at somewhere and I missed it?

Jensen’s ending would certainly be a iconic ending for Dean , would not do alot for Sam .
Who knows I would not be surprised if Dean was the last one standing out of the two brothers if they go that route because what kind of life as Sam got anyway. But if they are harbouring hopes for a film? then we could have a more open ending.

A movie is just wishful thinking. Probably when the show is over the guys are going to move on to other projects so it might be impossible.
I just don’t see a happy ending for Sam. That poor guy just never gets a break.

Just reading your ending brought tears to my eyes. 😥 At first I thought Dean was alive and alone, but when I read it again, I think he died too. Oh my… not sure which is worse.
My ending would be a happier one.
Chuck, or GOD, finally makes an appearance to set things right.
They fight some big bad and win. The boys are hurt… maybe even in the hospital close to death. Chuck appears, thanks them for all they have done, heals them and promises they will be happy now and have a good life. No more fighting Demons, no more struggles or death of loved ones.
He tells them that it is someone else’s turn to take over the family business. In comes Adam and another guy (Rufus’ son, Emmett) Adam was only in hell while Sam was there, when Sam left, so did he. He’s been with God and Emmett training.
Dean protests, it’s hard for him to stop hunting. He doesn’t want to leave it to Adam, but they convince him by letting him go on a hunting trip with Adam and Emmett. He sees how well they handle themselves.
What about Cas? Dean wants to know. Cas zaps in to the room. He is happy, at peace. He is God’s right hand man and floats from Heaven to Earth to help those who need him, like a guardian angel. He hugs the boys, tells them to listen to Chuck. He stays a moment by Dean and they share a look. “I’m always here if you need me. Just call,” says Cas.
Dean and Sam go back to where Lisa lives. She’s still not married, always has loved Dean. We see Dean and Lisa reunite. It’s not perfect, but it’s a start. He has to regain her trust.
Sam is a little lost. He’s not sure what to do with himself. He gets a job as a handy man, settles into a nice apartment close to Dean’s place. Last shot of him we see him looking over some flyers at a local college. It’s never to late to go back, he thinks.
This ending leaves thing happy, but there is potential if there was to be a movie.. Adam and Emmett can come back and get the boys if they need help fighting some monster. 🙂

Personally I’d liek to see the brothers split up. Without being involved in the Angels, Sam would be able to be himself…no more possessions, no more soulessness, no more insanity.
Hes on a personal journey to diiscover who Sam Winchester is without the Angelic influence… hunter who saves people and hunts evil…whiile making friends and family of his own who are willing to get to know him without resorting to the cliffs notes..
Dean continues to battle Angels with his ligion of family and friends…Cas, Benny, Charlie, Garth…..
The movie could pick up where one day during a particularly brutal hunt they run across each other….when they realize who the other hunter is, there is an epic hug and they decide to go get a drink and catch up. Its then they realize they need to team up to stop whatever big bad is threatening the world.

I either want all three guys to have that safe and normal apple pie life (wives, kids, everything) or to all go out in a blaze of glory. As much as it would hurt, if the last shot of the show was of three headstones all in a row, it would be extremely poignant. Not to mention, how much of a beautiful shot that would be. I appreciate the technical almost as much as what’s going on story-wise.

I would like to see Cas have an epic goodbye with the boys and then return to heaven. He walks into Harvell’s and everyone is there; Bobby, Ellen, Jo, Ash, John, Mary, Pamela, Kevin, etc… all sitting around talking and laughing.
Meanwhile…. the boys and Crowley fight a big bad together. Crowley double crosses them in the end, escapes and goes on being a fabulously evil bastard.
The boys, knowing Crowley couldn’t be trusted, have prepared for it and end up defeating the big bad on their own. They help each other up, battered, bruised, and broken they limp over to Baby. Dean makes some snide remark and Sam gives him the bitch face. They make their way to the trunk, open it and throw their weapons in. The look at each other, then back at the camera and say in unison “we’ve got work to do.” Trunk slams…..fade to black! 😆

I’m with you #10 buffsgirl. Your’s is the only ending here for me!
“We’ve got work to do.” And Baby disappears over the next hill. 😛 🙂

Here’s my vision/version – but honestly, I just don’t want the show to end.
The premise is based on the words of Henry Winchester: as long as there are Winchesters, there’s hope.
After the harrowing season of crap flung at the boys in S9, Sam and Dean come together again for the last battle. Everyone wants them dead- angels, demons, vampires- every creature they’ve ever hunted is after them. They are forced to leave the Men of Letters bunker. Its defenses are about to be broken. To preserve the knowledge contained inside, they seal the door and hide the key for future generations to find.
Dean sees after one terrifying battle after the other, that they aren’t going to make it on the run, even with Cas’ help, and asks Sammy for one last gift – to let him die first. His whole life has been taking care of Sam, looking after Sam and he can’t bear to live without him. He makes Sam promise, that in the end, Dean dies first. Sam reluctantly agrees, and pledges to do his best.
Along the way of many harrowing escapes, the boys meet their soul mates, and fall in love. They both know there is zero chance they’ll be granted this happiness for long, so the courtship is short lived. Cas appears to both women and foretells their future. They will each have one child – the sons of Sam and Dean Winchester, whom they are charged to protect at all costs. Both women accept the challenge. Cas vows he will be their guardian throughout their lives.
Very shortly after the birth of their children, Sam and Dean are cornered by a horde of Demons. Cas can’t come help because he is fulfilling his vow to the sons of his best friends. Dean dies protecting Sam to the last, even though he knows Sam is mortally wounded. Sam holds on through the pain and grief of watching his brother die before he too succumbs.
They meet again in a cabin in the woods. No one else is there to greet them when they both expected to see their families and friends again. Inside the cabin, Death awaits them. But there’s a hitch. God appears (Chuck, of course). He doesn’t want Death to take the boys. He has other plans for them. No one knows (or finds out) what those plans are. Sam and Dean are last seen watching in stunned awe as God and Death go to battle.
Back on earth, an unknown number of years into the future, Cas is seen warding a modest house against demons and angels and all things evil. Boxes are being unpacked. The two women live together raising the boys as brothers. The two boys, who seem about ten, burst into the room where Cas has just hidden all the warding so it is invisible. They tackle him in their happiness at seeing their ‘Uncle’. He gathers them into a big chair where they like to read, but instead of a book, he tells them…I’d like to tell you more about your fathers.
Outside the house, the lights flicker as two images appear, standing together watching the house. One is quite tall with longer hair. They watch Cas through the window talking to the boys. They share a look, a smile between them, and they disappear.

Very nice Elizabeth. Thanks to you and all the posters above for your versions of how the show should or might end. I am stunned at how good some of these ending scenes are. Great job everybody! It is very hard for me to think of the show ending at all. I can’t imagine not having a new episode on the horizon. It will be hard saying goodbye no matter how it ends. 😥

There is a hole into an alternate universe opened by demons that needs closing. Sam and Dean load up Baby with explosives. They look at each other, “Bitch”, “Jerk” and drive through hordes of demons, fighting them off the whole way. They get to the hole in reality, begin to enter and there is a giant explosion…fade to Jody Mills, now married and with a young son. She is tucking him into bed and she begins his bedtime story – “Let me tell you the story of two heroes, Sam and Dean…. This time the show ends with Carry On My Wayward Son along with a montage of ten plus years of our brothers. Leaves lots of room for the movie – which starts with them exploding out the other side of the hole in the universe. Corny, but I still love it, lol!

I honestly couldn’t say how I envision the show ending now. But back when season 5 was going to be the end, I always thought the show would end with both Sam and Dean in Hell. Pessimistic, yes, but I thought it felt right.
The perfect happy ending to the show would involve Sam and Dean riding off while Zeppelin’s “Ramble On” plays. That could of course never happen, because budget, but that’s how I would like it to end.

Having only just discovered this show, I really hate the idea of it ending at the end of 10. With the ratings the way they are now and should continue, provided they keep giving us awesome shows – do you really think the CW isn’t going to renew it past 10? Unless of course Jared and Jensen are ready to move on. Geeze, I hope not!

#16 DeanColt45-Yep, I agree as long as the numbers are good and the guys are onboard it will get renewed. I have mixed feeling about that. I love the show but I don’t want it to go on until it sputters out like some shows. So far so good, eh? I think Jared and Jensen will know when it is time to move on. As long as they are excited I am too! 🙂

Yes, I agree. No sputtering. It’s a tough call, since it’s kind of hard to imagine where they’ll take the show next. Show will have to come up with something awesome after S10 to keep J2 onboard (and us too). So come on SPN writers! Put your thinking caps on, please. 🙂
I’m reading some of thee thoughts and while they are good ideas, they aren’t realistic. This is Supernatural. There is no such thing as a happy ending. If anything, Sam will die in the end. He’s offered enough and i honestly believe that death is his happy ending. Sam will never have a happy ending and neither will Dean. So out of the two brothers, I think Sam is the one who will die. the show has been hinting at that since the beginning of this season and ideally, I want Sam to die. The guy needs eternal peace and Dean needs to accept Sam’s death as a personal lesson: letting Sam go.

Plus, I don’t really see a movie for Supernatural. Not after so many seasons. And I hope they don’t make an SPN movie. It’s a TV series and honestly, I feel a movie would ruin SPN for me.

You just stabbed me in the heart. Not Sam dying…cause in a way I want Sam to die too. ok…no….Sam dying SHATTERS my heart but the truth is the writers have done everything possible and beyond to show that Sam’s life is far more his Hell then even Hell was.
So while, I want Sam to finally achieve peace (and I think he has fulfiilled the songs theme song) i dont want him to die. Except I KNOW death is the only way he will have peace.
Secondly….while I want Sam to die (no…no i dont) I dont want Sam to die simply to teach Dean a personal lesson. That would mean Sam was never a person in his own right…that is life was NEVER his own and this was his only purpose on the show.
If Show and Carver is intent on teaching this lesson to Dean then I hope beyond all hope that letting go doesn’t only have to be death. That letting go could mean letting go of the abhorent parent/child relationship that Dean so desperatly needs. That if could mean letting Sam…letting him and treating him like the adult and the proficient hunter he is.
Dean got to step out of Johns shadow and become his own man…I’d really like to see the same for Sam.
So maybe Dean letting Sam go just means they have to seperate and Dean realizes just because Sam isn’t living the life Dean deems acceptable in order to be his family it doesn’t mean Sam doesn’t love him.
And I hope that when this happens it doesn’t automatically mean quittting hunting and living a :normal’ life which writers never bothers to define for Sam.
I hope Sam’s life is more then existing to teach Dean some personal lesson. (just as i want Deans life to be more about simply protecting Sam) I want his life to be his..just as I want his death to HIS.

Hi Katerina @19. I know what you are saying and I thought that they should go out in a blaze o’ glory sort of ending, for years. I don’t really think that anymore. I especially don’t want Sam to die because it is his “happy ending”. For me now, I think the lesson is that there is always hope and family in all it’s forms is important. These guys have gone through hell (literally) and yet they keep finding a way to keep going. Sam wants to see that light at the end of the tunnel and Dean does too, if he lets himself. I want to believe that one or both of them will have that. Unrealistically of me maybe, but these are men who have fought very hard to keep other people safe, to keep themselves alive, and to keep each other alive. My hope is that it wasn’t all for nothing. I don’t want either one to be ‘taught’ a lesson. I have always felt that both Sam and Dean try very hard to do what is right most of the time. I love them for that. Their “peace” will come. I would like for them to have some more good memories to create their own heaven before they depart for good. But that’s just me. 🙂

I can only say this once, because my heart is a little shattered right now….
SAM CANNOT DIE!
I would seriously be so pissed at the show… I may just end up hating it.
To think that Sam would never be given that chance to be happy… to never be free. 😥
You are right amyh, Sam’s life is hell. Just one bad experience after another. And yes Heaven could be his resting place… but in SPN heaven you go to a place that comforts you. Where would that be for Sam? With Jessica? Are all thought on what happened to her gone? Will he be alone? I don’t like it.
He needs some time to be himself. I think given a chance he can be happy. He was happy with Amelia for a time. I think he could’ve been happy with her if not for the dead husband returning and Dean’s pulling him back into the life of a hunter.
I think he would have a hard time assimilating at first. Harder than Dean, honestly. But he could do it and once time passes he just might be happy.
That’s what I want for him.

That was clearly Kripke’s original intent, Sam dies. If season 6 never happened, Sam would still be in the Cage, and I’m pretty sure Bobby and Cas may have stayed dead.
Although Kripke did say one of the things he had to change for the season 5 finale was the where are they now epilogue, so who knows.

I hate to say it, but a happy ending is not in the cards for Sam Winchester. He’s had plenty of opportunities to find himself and find happiness and he never found it. Sam is a tragic hero. He’s to meant to be happy. Characters like Sam (and by extension, Dean, but mostly Sam) are meant to die. Sam was born to die in my opinion. I don’t see a fairytale ending happening for Sam or either of the brothers to be honest. And personally, i want a tragic ending. This is SAM AND DEAN, not a Disney movie with a happily ever after. No such thing on Supernatural.

I guess we will see what happens… Yes, this is Supernatural and the boys have been through hell in more ways than one. No, we will probably not see a Happily Ever After Disney type ending. No saving Sam or Dean with true love’s first kiss here. They will have to save themselves. Dean can’t save Sam. Sam can’t save Dean. In a life away from hunting they would have to assimilate, adjust, and overcome. This would not be easy. But I still think, and will always think, they could do it.
If either Sam or Dean was to die, then why aren’t they already dead?
How many times have they died and been brought back? Yet fate or God had nothing to do with that?
I choose to believe it did.
Whatever the ending, I hope it’s a long way off as I still love this show. Thinking about it being over forever makes me sad.

End? Supernatural end? What the hell you talking about, end!!???!! Nope, not happening, no way. Just. No.
OK, seriously. There was a time story-wise when (as much as I would have hated it) the ‘blaze of glory’ ending with Sam & Dean dying to save the world could have worked. Personally, I think that ship has sailed. For a couple of reasons.
First,There have been too many saves and ways to bring people back from the dead. If Sam and/or Dean ends up ‘all dead’ instead of ‘mostly dead’ (in other words, slightly alive ;)) its just going to feel like a cheat to me and piss me off.
Second, I have always believed that the Winchesters represent hope. And as Henry said, as long as a Winchester is alive there is hope. Since neither brother can truly live their life without the other, both Winchesters need to be alive for that hope to live. Because really, if after all they’ve gone through, at the ‘end’ they lose each other? That will just fucking suck. What will the point of it have been? No, the Winchesters stand for the fallen. They pick themselves up, stitch the pieces back together and keep going.
Third, if the Winchesters die, all the supernatural beings that manipulated them, hurt them, lied to them, killed their friends and family and many innocent people along the way will have won. That’s no good.
Fourth, you don’t kill the franchise and Sam and Dean ARE the franchise. The tie-in novels (for example) need Sam & Dean alive to continue their adventures. A Supernatural movie needs Sam & Dean. (The Veronica Mars kickstarter movie reached its funding level in a day, — have you met the SPN fandom? I’ll take bets right now that we would beat that record.)
So, while I don’t think there will be rainbows and puppies and white picket fences in the ending of Supernatural, I do think it will be ‘happy’ in that both Dean and Sam will live to fight another day. If its satisfying, they will be at peace with each other and with their hunter lifestyle. I also think that the line ‘We’ve got work to do” and the shot of the Impala trunk slamming shut and fading to black w/ ‘created by Eric Kripke’ is how it will end.

I want a tragic ending. None of this rainbow and unicorns nonsense. I don’t want to see either brother get married, have children with the white picket fence. No. Because it goes against everything that these brothers stand for and it degrades everything that Sam and Dean have been through throughout the course of the series. Sam and Dean are heroes. They (or one of them) should die as heroes. They’ve been through enough. They’ve both paid enough. I think Heaven is waiting for them now and they (or one of the brothers) can finally find peace.

And i’m sorry but to me, the Winchesters have never represented hope. They have represented a tragic fate, a destiny of gloom and tragedy. As long as one or both of the brothers are alive, this vicious cycle of trying to go to extreme measures to save each other will never end. Season nine opened my eyes. There is a lesson to be learned here. What’s dead should stay dead. Bringing people back from the dead is not normal. It’s not the natural order of things. Bad things happen when thou mess with the natural order. Sam should have been dead since season 2. But then we wouldn’t have a show. There’s consequences of trying to mess with death, people’s fate and playing God with other’s lives. This season has been about that.
Carver is not Kripke. Kripke is another era, the past. Carver has created a new Supernatural. A Supernatural which has showcase the value of an important lesson, especially for Dean. And that is letting someone you love go, even if it hurts. It is clear that from the beginning of this season, that there was a foreshadows of Sam’s death in the future. It seems to me that a Sam death with Dean accepting it is the way the story seems to be heading in Carver era. And frankly, I would actually be very content with that. After 9 seasons of these brothers trying to save each other and bring each other back from the dead, it has to end. Otherwise, the natural order will always be screwed up. In my opinion, Sam Winchester’s true happy ending is death and Heaven. Sam can’t find happiness while being alive because he’s not supposed to be alive. Sam was technically supposed to be at peace back at the end of season 2 and he was robbed of it. Sam was never the same once he was brought back from the dead and it changed him completely. All Sam has gone through is endless suffering and misery. This is why I want Sam to die. He needs peace after suffering so much and enduring a life of hating himself. The truth is, Sam will NEVER be happy, not when he’s alive. I think the show has been trying to say that for many seasons now.

How should this story end? I don’t know. To have Sam die just so Dean can learn to let go seems like a repeat of Swan Song to me. I used to think that it should end Butch and Sundance style (that would have been my season two or three ending), but now I think I don’t want them to die. Not because it would be so sad and tragic, but I don’t want them to go to heaven, I’m with Dean on heaven being Memorex and lonely–even if they are supposed to share a heaven. So, I guess I would like them to get a big win and then keep fighting the good fight. I think I like the idea that these guys are out there continuing to fight for humanity without humanity even knowing they exist.
It might be nice, however, if they could find some peace. I’m not sure that death is not required for this though.

Ahh, Melanie. The truth you do speak.
Say, if the show had ended at Season Five.. really, that would have been a perfect ending. Of course, who wants to think of Sam in hell? not me. BUT the way Swan Song was done was perfect. It felt like the end.
Now, though.. I just don’t think that would work.
Henry’s quote about hope was just last season, so I think it still holds true, even with Carver calling the shots. let’s tell all the people they saved, or those who called on them for help, that they don’t represent hope. I think they may disagree. I think Cas may disagree with that thought as well.
The bad guys can’t win. That goes against everything SPN stands for. Sam ans Dean dying would make all those lovely Demons so very happy and THAT is just not right.
Katerina… we shall agree… to disagree. 😉
This is how we feel and nothing is gong to change our opinion. Maybe in a few years we’ll still be on here and the show will come to an end. Then we can come and discuss how neither one us was right and how surprised we are at what actually happened. Lol.

@jarielynn — Damn straight! Happy demons? Not. Happening. 😉
@Katerina
I recognize that Sam (and Dean) have both had misery and heart ache. I refuse to believe that death is the only way for them to find peace and/or happiness.
Supernatural is structured around unreliable narrators – mostly supernatural beings who always have their own agenda – including ‘Death’. Its Death who (most recently) told Dean that he was defying the ‘natural order’. I think Death’s agenda there is pretty clear – he even said it, he has to clean up the mess. If the Winchesters can defy ‘the natural order,’ that makes Death not as powerful as Death likes to think he is. Like all angels – the Angel of Death thinks he’s superior to humans. Personally my money’s on the Winchesters.
I agree with you that this season is looking to have Dean reconsider his ‘Sammy first’ mantra, but I also think its going to have Sam realizing his importance to Dean, regaining some self worth and helping his brother come to terms with Kevin’s death.
Both Winchesters have been suicidal – both will decide its not the way to go. I can all but guarentee you that the Winchesters will not go out in a way that can be construed as dying because they preferred death (peace) over life.
Couldn’t disagree with this view of the show more! It is much too cynical. You are entitled to your opinion
Katerina. We get that you want it to end tragically and it may, who knows, but not because their destiny is supposed to be “gloom and tragedy” IMO. I think they are learning lessons along the way. Hard lessons. If they die it will be because the nature of their jobs almost assures it. Wouldn’t it be nice if instead some bit of happiness came their way for all the good they have tried to do?

I can’t believe I just thought of this!!
Okay, I am re-watching Season 8. I just saw the episode with Henry and now I am on “Everybody Hates Hitler”
They are in the bunker.. The Men of Letters Bunker.
You know the one their grandfather lead them too. The Group that John was suppose to be, a part of. The Winchester legacy?
Don’t you think Sam would fit right in here? Advising, researching, helping other hunters.
Hell yeah. I think so! lol
So my new prediction. (haha) is that Sam becomes a Men of Letters. Maybe Dean… but I don’t think he would be happy doing this job. He’s more hands on.
Dean’s been trying to set roots and build a home in the bunker. He wants a home. So, I still think he needs to get away from the life. I still want him with Lisa.
Of course Sam can call him if he needs help with anything.
This is my new outlook.
Don’t know why I didn’t think of this before. 😆

I don’t have an ending story wise, but I do believe everyone will die-just as Kripke would have done if the show ended. In season 5 God would not have brought back Cass who would not have saved Bobby or Dean. Dean would have died from his injuries (as Chuck had said that Dean did not want to be saved) on the spot that Sam had fallen into. Maybe something similar will happen at the real end. One thing is sure-we won’t be saved.

Winchester Brothers — with all they have done to help this Earth and a few of the good supernatural beings, can’t the Great Creator spare a few warrior angels to guard the brothers when they leave the hunter’s life so that they could grow old, have families, nourish the Men of Letters, train new hunters, etc.?
Castiel — he could be the new right-hand angel of the GC, with his knowledge of what it likes to be both supernatural and human. He could teach the angels about compassion.
Bobby Singer — he could be the new Guardian of Heaven’s Hall of Weapons as well as a Teacher.
John and Mary / Kevin and Mama Tran — could reincarnate and live peaceful lives with or w/o each other. Unless they want to be MoL?
Garth — as Guardian of the MoL
Crowley — reincarnate as a human, may he choose to be a better man this time.
Heaven and Hell (and their denizens) — I think the Great Rift should be healed.
Thank you for sharing all your ideas (which I will read after posting this).

I read in an FB post that Jensen had a recurring dream of how SPN will end: After Sam did not come back to life again after the last mortal wound, Jensen saw Dean meeting a man in a bike in some place. THen, he saw Dean gave the man the keys to the Impala and he took the keys to the bike. Although Jensen did not say it, I think Dean will take his own life by jumping off a cliff while on the bike.

Theory: Maybe DEATH will be the final enemy? Didn’t he say he will reap the (SPN) God someday (or hopes to reap him)? Maybe he and God are like “chess players” and Earth is one of their chess boards. Cruel, I know — it seems as if we don’t mean much to these Beings. Maybe it’s time to teach both what it’s like to be human dealing with the rules they laid out for us.

Fedelynn, Your ending is even more happier and rosier than mine! lol…
All the characters coming back and making things work. Now, there is an idea. You forgot Meg though.. She should be there next to Castiel. lol.
really… probably not going to happen. BUT I love the idea of “the great Creator” protecting the boys so they can have a good life. 🙂 I kind of thought the same thing too. Chuck/ God will finally ta=hank them and set them free. Sigh… THAT to me, would be epic. 🙂

I really really dont want Sam to die at the end….but if the writers insist on killing him off I hope they allow Sam to choose how he dies…and good comes from it. This is how I envision Sam dying…
It’s a quiet moment at the bunker…Sam finds a spell similar to the one Henry W. used. He thinks about it for days, forming a plan. It all comes together when he finds something els and the plan clicks into place. One day he casts it and he goes back in time to 1983. Minutes before Azazel comes into his nursery. He looks down at his innocent 6 month self. he looks at that tiny baby who willcause so much misery and pain for so many people as well as his own beloved family.
Crying, and telling the baby he iis sorry but its for the best, he smothers his infant self. Seconds after he is done, Azazel comes intot he room. Sam takes him by surprise adn shoots Azazel with the Colt.
The gunshot brings John, MAry and Dean into the room to find a dead man in the nursery with dead baby Sammy.
As the family looks on in horror, confusiona dn grief ….there is a riipple effect showing how this one event saved hundreds of thousands of lives.
Jessica, Sarah, John, MAry, Dean, Bobby, Kevin, his mom, Ash, Pam, The entire Harvelle family are still alive.Jimmy NNovak…alive. The Campbell line is still alive. Rufas is alive. Not only loves ones but all the special kids are alive. Hunters who died helping the boys are alive. Entire towns are alive…the one murdered inb Croatoan, thhe one Lucifer killed to brin about Death. Both woman possessed by Demon Meg, the girl possessed by Ruby 1… all alive.
And because Sam killed himself…..all the people Godstiel killed are alive. hell….all the innocent people killed while possessed during the Angel civil war conflicts just this season alone…alive.
Hundreds of thousands of people alive vs the hundred ot so alive all because Sam chose as Spock once put it…the needs of the many outweight the needs of the few or the one.
The final scene is Dean at the bunker, figuring out Sam did …Somethingh. he finds a note from Sam telling him he loves Dean but he found a way to fix everything he broke. And thhe result will hopefully give Dean what he most wants int he world.
Another ripple effect and Dean is still in the bunker but this time he is with Mary and John and Henry and Bobby…John who is MOL carrying on his families legacy. Bobby too, is now a part of the MOL and works the ‘hub’
John hands a fiile of information to Dean and tells him thiis is the information he needs. Just as Dean takes the file, John pulls him into a tight hug and whispers “I’m so proud of you, son.”
Dean grins and says ” It’s the family business.”
he leaves and screen fades to black,we hear Sam, in his quiet voice over. “Your my big brother. And there is nothing I wouldn’t do for you.”

Forgot about Meg. Thank you for reminding me… Now, that is a demon who proved she could change if she wanted to. Great story there — Meg and Cas. THey liked and respected each other with their eyes wide open all the time.
Hope we do get a happy ending for the boys and their friends.

Thank you, Amyh. But won’t this mean that the Apocalypse will happen? Sam and Dean were the fruits of the struggle started by Cain and Abel.

Well I guess the show coming to an end is inevitable, as it can’t last forever right? Right?
As for how I would like things to end, I have a couple of scenarios. I haven’t read any comments yet so if I repeat any of yours, my apologies or we can look at it as ‘Great minds think alike”
First of all for me it has to end with either both of them living or both of them dying.
Having one live while the other dies, has not gone well in the past.
If they should end the show with them dying, I hope they are able to successfully close the gates to hell, forever freeing humanity for demons.
I can see them successfully closing the gates and then collapsing beside each other checking out their wounds. Both realizing that they are beyond repair they acknowledge that their time is up and are grateful and happy they saw it through to the end together. They pass on when Castiel shows up. Realizing their fate he is about to resurrect them when he is stopped by God/Chuck. Chuck tells Castiel that what they have done for humanity is enough and that it is time for them to be at peace. He puts his arm around Cas and assures him that he will be able to visit them in their heaven. Then the screen goes bright and we then see Sam and Dean standing in front of their old house in Kansas. They both walk up to the door and open it. Both Mary and John stand up and Mary walks to the brothers grabs each of their hands and says “Look John the boys are finally home”
If they should both live then I can see them either carrying on with the Family Business. Keeping with the theme that they were able to close the gates of Hell, I like the ending of them putting their weapons in the trunk of the Impala and saying ‘we still have work to do’.
I also like the idea of them going their separate ways. Sam becoming a teacher and or becomes a MOL, keeping library up to date.
As for Dean I can see him maybe rebuilding Bobby’s home and Salvage Yard and working on repairing or restoring old cars.
However I also like the idea of maybe after closing the gates of hell, God/Chuck rewards them by giving them back their lives. We go back to that fateful night from the pilot where Mary and Dean go to say goodnight to an infant Sam. John comes in and puts Dean to bed. We then see Mary in bed being wakened by Sam’s cries. She gets up and goes to Sam’s room and we see the silhouette of a man standing over the crib. Mary is shushed by the man and goes to go back to bed when she sees the light flickering at the end of the hall she checks it out. After a couple of taps she notices a light downstairs. She heads down and sees the TV still on. She turns it off and goes back upstairs and stands by the man standing over the crib. It is John. “You left the TV on.” “Sorry, I heard Sam and wanted to make sure he was safe”

Gosh Amyh @ there is a sweetness about your comment that I really like. The smothering of baby Sammy is just a little umm, ouch. Maybe it could be rolled back a bit more and somehow have Sam prevent his conception somehow? The idea of Mary and John coming in to a smothered baby is so sad to me. It would still be the sacrifice you intended. But hey, it’s your vision of how it should end not mine 🙂

I know its dark but Supernatural can be dark. I’m not sure preventing his conception would work. Did the boys try that when Anna went back in time to kill Mary? I know she was already pregnant with Dean but no one tried to tell not to have any more kids beyond that. COurse her memory was wiped.
I’m not sure how Sam could prevent his conception anyway unless he goes back to 1983 and pretends to be an annoying cousin who interrputs everyy time JOhn and MAry start to get intimet.
lol I could see him hauling little Dean into the room and announcing its Family game night….Monopoly is hours and hours of fun! But for how long? The entire year?
I dont want Sam (or Dean) to die. It would absolutely break my heart.
besides I dont think Sam has had any memories that are heaven worthy….you know…spending an eternity in. He still needs to have those kind of experiences yet.
But if the writers are intent on killing Sam off i just want him to have some agency in it. Not die as a puppet.

Amyh That is an interesting idea but Castiel told Dean in The Beginning that he couldn’t change the past he could only try to change the direction of the future. Henry was going to try to change the past but there was no certainty that he was going to be successful. That is why Dean stopped him. Now Sam never learned that lesson so he may try to change the past and in true SPN fashion screw things up even more. Hence the movie.

Hi Amyh @50- No I get what you are trying to do and even though it would kill me to see either or both of them die, I agree with your last sentence. Supernatural be very dark indeed. The baby part might even be just a smidge too dark for even them. 🙂 I agree that I would love to see Sam (and Dean) have a few more more nice memories to take to the SPN version of heaven before they leave this earth for the last time. I said something along those line in my earlier post.

Cheryle @ 51 I dont think Castiel has the final voice in everything….afterall Anna went back intime to kill MAry and would have succeeded if Micheal hadn’t stepped in. If Micheal hadn’t his own agenda I think Mary would have died back then.
Leah @52. I’m not sure if it would be too dark for Supernatural. I mean…show DID kill two little boys during the Lilith regime…also during her time it was implaied she ate babies. Sam and Ruby even saved one from one of her minions.
Course all those deaths were either off screen or just implied…so why couldn’t they do that? Imply what Sam is doing? Camera stays on Sams face….tears sliding down hsi face.
That said…i don’t want Sam to die at any age. i JUST THINK storywise…it would be darkly beautiful thematically.
Course…I wouldn’t want Jared have to do that kind of scene. .. expecially ..well…you know.
So forget that. Lets go with no one dies….and show ends with them in a good place with themselves and with each other. And Sam gets his own car. . 🙂

amyh I agree that is why Anna went back but she was unsuccessful. That is why Castiel said that all roads lead to the same destiny. Events can be altered but the end result is always the same. The only thing that Sam and Dean could alter was the future. That is why Lucifer ended up being wrong (well mostly, Sam is possessed by an angel he can’t control in the year 2014). Anyway I liked your idea. I just can’t seem to make it work where a baby doesn’t end up dead.

I’ve been playing around with this idea: A new prophetess named Emily Thompson (derived from Emily McLaughlin and Robbie Thompson) turns up. She is “tethered” to Sam. Kind of like how Elena is “sired” to Damon in Vampire Diaries. She cannot be extremely far distances from Sam or she begins to get sick and eventually dies. The idea here is that Sam is the key to translating the demon and angel tablets since he’s been possessed by both and his blood is also a vital “ink” in to decoding the tablets.
Wars and shenanigans ensue over the season(s). Dean and Emily have a love hate brother sister kind of relationship. Sam and Emily’s bond is so strong that eventually they fall in love (sorry I’m a hopeless romantic!) The four of them (including Castiel) interpret the tablets and shut both gates for good. Somehow God comes in to the picture and gives Castiel the option to be locked in Heaven for good or to stay on earth with the Winchesters. He chooses the latter because “family doesn’t end with blood.” God grants him as ruler and watcher over the humans and Cass has full angel mojo. He stays in very close contact with the boys.
Emily finds a spell in the tablets that allows her to end the all prophets must die or disappear motif. It has to do with she is the last prophet who interprets the final line of the tablet and saves a righteous man who is damned (this is Sam obviously.) She gives her life for him during the climatic closing of all the gates scene, but when God shows up He brings her back and she is no longer a prophetess (so she gets to live!) Also, during this amazing scene we see spirits or visions of everyone who has fought the good fight with our boys: mom and dad, Bobby, Ash, Jo, Ellen, Pam… you get the picture. They are all there together when “it ends.” The bunker is destroyed during the last fight, but all its secrets now lie with our four heroes.
Even though angels and demons are locked up, old school monsters still roam and Dean knows this is where his heart and home is: on the road with Baby listening to classic rock, eating at greasy diners, and digging any and all good looking chicks with a cute smile. He is happy continuing the “family business.”
Sam and Emily marry and live a quiet life in small town USA. Sam finishes law school and works pro bono “helping” the ones who need “saving.” Dean has a room at their house and is welcome there anytime. All seems normal… or does it?
Cut to a few years down the road. Emily is putting a baby down in a crib at night and Sam comes up behind her wrapping his arms tightly around her waist. He whispers for her to go on to bed and he will stay in the nursery on the couch until the baby goes to sleep. Sam gives his classic sideways quick satisfied smile as he sits on the couch with his work looking over at the crib.
Fade to black and then fade back to a close up of Sam’s face lying on the couch where he has dosed off. It’s the scene we have seen one too many times. A few drops of blood land on his face and he gasps and screams “NOOOOOOOOOO!!!” as fire reflects in his eyes. Cut to black.
“Any chapped-assed monkey with a keyboard can poop out a beginning, but endings are impossible. You try to tie up every loose end, but you never can. The fans are always gonna bitch, there’s always gonna be holes, and since it’s the ending it’s all supposed to add up to something I’m telling you…they’re the raging pain in the ass……. No doubt endings are hard, but then again, nothing ever really ends, does it?”
Leaves the door open for a movie don’t ya think???

Not the end…
Love this ending too! “It never really ends.”

Not the end…
Love this ending too! “It never really ends.”
Wow! Dude! My heart is broken 🙁 But awesome twist!

amyh… hey! I thought we were in the whole, We can’t kill Sammy thing together. Come on, stay with me.
You all are killing me with you endings. Ugh… I really had a hard time with Jess’s version. Come on.. we CANNOT do that to Sam. I think I like the idea of him dying better than having to live through something like that. 😥
We are sure a passionate bunch with many ideas.

This is how I want it to end.(I am very bad at writing dialogues). So here goes.
Sam is in the impala which is parked at road side.A guy is watching him from the drivers side .”Who are you? What are you doing in the drivers seat?” asks Sam.
I am God and I have been in driver’s seat for a long time.
Sam looks at god reverently.
“You have always prayed for me. You will not suffer anymore. Both of you ,my children have won and humanity has won along with you and do not worry we are going to meet your brother.
they both get out of impala and go into the restaurant along side which the car stood.
Dean and Death in death’s favourite restaurant but Death orders pie.
“Pie?” asks Dean.
“Well its time for my successsor” replies death.
Death gives the scythe to Dean and tells him to reap the present Death.
Dean asks what about his brother. Is he peaceful.Yes says Death with a somewhat mysterious smile.
Dean is staring when death asks why is he staring. He asks about the smile.Death says you remember I told you I am older than God.Well Iam older than god the same way you are older to Sam.Its time for the new god and death to have their world. And let me say both of you have impressed me.
Sam and God enter the restaurant.
Cue to brotherly scenes.Dean reaps Death.
best of luck say the ex god and Death and
Sam says to Dean ” We have work to do ” and they smile to each other.
Then “Carry on my wayward Son”.

After all their suffering. After all they have given up in order to ‘save people’. After being to hell, heaven and purgatory. I just want them to get their reward. Alive and continuing on or dying in a blaze of glory. Let God finally show up from his vacation or whatever, and realize that these Winchesters are amazing human beings and deserve everything he can give them!
If alive at the end, God sends them off with his blessing and the knowledge they are doing good and must ‘carry on’. If a heroic death, be at peace with mom and dad, Bobby, both grandads, grandma, Jo, Ellen, Ash, Andy, Rufus, Pamela, Sarah etc etc and all they have lost.
Most of all. May the show NEVER END!! 😛 😉 🙂

Good question.
I thought about this and ended up writing my first ever piece of fanfiction. (So be kind, I’m nervous to show you.)
If you want to read it, here’s the link.

I wish I could show a picture I bought the other day to give a friend as a New Year present. On the foreplan there are two figures seen from their backs – a barefooted and a long-haired angel and a beautiful grey cat. They are sitting on a branch of a tall tree high above the houseroofs covered with snow and tiny figures of people moving to and fro around the winter town. The angel is half-turning to the cat as if confiding his thoughts, his arm lifting protectively. The cat sits upright, pricking up his ears, his posture proud and confident, and yet looking as soft and snug as cats are.
Here comes my theory. Sam (of course) has had the upper hand over the angel-impostor and now is in full posession of angelic mojo. Plus he still keeps his human soul as well and so his position as half-angel-half-man is pretty much unique. He is chosen or appointed as Guardian of the world (by Chuck?) and though his dreams of normal life will never come true, he can be proud to have all possible respect from celestial things and this exceptionally important job to do.
Now, why is Dean a cat? Maybe, after all these shady dealings with Crowley (the road of best intentions) he was in danger to find himself in hell again, and the only way of escaping it was to tread the path of reincarnations. Would spending a life as a cat purify a
soul? Does it all sound like fanfic? Silly as my theory may seem it has one advantage – nobody dies! And the show goes on.

Everyone has it ending sadly. I’d like to see both Sam and Dean die while driving Baby, as in a car accident. They both wake up and they instantly realize that they are dead. All of a sudden God, who I think we all can agree is Chuck, appears. He simply says, “Thank you boys. You have done well.” They are not only reunited with their father and everyone they have loved and lost, but also their mother. And Jess. And for all eternity, they can live in peace and happiness. They happiness they had given up all their lives.
