My Supernatural Christmas
That got me thinking. Do any of my other decorations have a special meaning for me this year? As Christmas drew closer, I started to notice little Supernatural winks in each family tradition. Decorating the tree was just too obvious. My “little tree topper” doesn’t wear a trench coat, but she still has her wings, and she glows with a bright, white light.
Since I have a particular fondness of angels, once I looked around I found angels “hiding” everywhere.
There were angel ornaments in the tree,
…angels keeping vigil over our nativities,
…and the angels watching from above.
As presents were unwrapped on Christmas morning, I smiled as I thought of the other “family” who might be giving and receiving these same gifts. The ball cap with the FBI logo reminded me of a lovable old man with a phone bank on his kitchen wall.
The plaid shirt would be given to update the tired wardrobe of one of the brothers.
…and the practical gifts that were lovingly given to fill up those long, oversized stockings.
How many other Christmases had our two families exchanged the same gifts? Dean would recognize the miniature, metal cars that raced around our figure-8 tracks and got chased by police down imaginary back highways.
…or the Legos. Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of Legos that got into every corner of the playroom, got stuffed into the furniture cushions… and got lost in the family car.
…and toy soldiers. Now I can’t look at them without thinking of two little boys playing with them in the back seat of the Impala during long road trips down deserted, dirt roads.
Then there are the Christmas presents that remind me of so many good and bad days shared by two brothers. The largest teddy bear in the house is overstuffed, floppy and has a rather chagrinned look on his face. He may be chocolate brown instead of jet black, but he knows his reason for living is to share a little girl’s love and to sip tea at countless tea parties.
…and the super-soakers that had to be replaced because the pump action finally gave out. They may never have been filled with holy water and fired by a prophet, but they are still pretty handy weapons on hot summer days.
Holidays are hard for some people because they have lost someone or are alone and lonely. Our boys certainly understand about loss of friends and family, having experienced far more than their fair share. They also understand, though, that all you need is one person to share a spiked eggnog with you to feel the love of family.
They know that one present wrapped in newspaper can mean more than a stack of boxes wrapped in shiny paper. They know that all you need is something you love on TV, whether it’s a football game or a show about family, angels and demons, to make the evening warm and cozy. Supernatural fans learned all these lessons from our boys. We have each other, because family doesn’t end with blood. We give each other the gifts of videos and art and stories wrapped in love. We watch our Show together every week. Even when new stories aren’t being aired, we pull out our favorite episodes and share them with each other through Twitter, Tumblr, and this website’s chat room. None of us are alone because we have each other.
It doesn’t matter if your holiday traditions include a Christmas tree, a Hanukah Menorah, a Kwanzaa Kinara, or nothing at all, you can always smile to yourself knowing the secret that you are a part of a worldwide family, who knows about shaving cream and motor oil, baseball caps and teddy bears, Legos in the car heater and tools in the trunk. Did you have a Supernatural Holiday?
“Merry Christmas, Dean.”
“Merry Christmas, Sammy.”
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. – Nightsky
Touching and sweet … Merry Christmas!
Touching and sweet … Merry Christmas!
Thanks for this; it was delightful! There’s not a lot about my Christmas decorations that speaks to Supernatural, but I grinned as I looked at the three unicorn ornaments on the tree, remembering plucky rainbows, and the several airplanes with no phantom travelers aboard. And of course, while my little tree sits atop one DVD cabinet, my three Impala models stand proudly in their cases on the matching cabinet on the other side of the TV: the 2-door 1:18 scale, with the 4-door 1:32 and brand-new 1:64 scale ones on top. And the 2013 and 2014 Winchester Brothers’ calendars hanging on the kitchen wall … 🙂

Very nice nightsky. I felt a little tug at my heart reading this. I myself had several items on my Xmas list that were SPN related but my oldest kids are concerned about my obsession with this show and just don’t understand that it is not an unhealthy obsession so they limited how many they got me. They didn’t want to contribute to my obsession so know what I did this morning, I went online and ordered the items they didn’t get . I’ll be obsessed if I want to and it is nice to know I can come here and feel love and acceptance for what I feel so passionate about. I bet if I walked around my house I too could associate items to this show like you did like my entire shelf on my bookcase filled with Supernatural books and items. I found that interesting and enjoyable to read. Thank you.

Thank you for this, I am touched. And yes, amid all of our regular holiday chaos, I had my first Supernatural christmas. It helps knowing that I am among many fans who are sharing this with me even if we are not ever f2f. Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas, Nightsky!
I did get the new 1:64th scale Impala for myself, a calendar from a dear friend & fellow fan, & an Impala baseball cap from my dad (he & I both have real Impalas, his a 1994 & mine a 2014, alas no 1967’s!). My parents also decorated their tree completely in model car ornaments. There are angels on my tree, & a moose figurine beside it!

Very nice Nightsky. I find a lot of things in life bring to mind the show I love so much. You did a great job of finding Christmas related things. Around the holiday’s when family gatherings can be, shall we say, challenging, it is nice to be reminded to appreciate family in whatever form that takes.
#3 Trucklady, good for you!!! “I’ll be obsessed if I want to”. Love it. My family has grown to like the show so they understand my love for the show. But for awhile there I got those “looks” that said you are a little off the rails there. 🙂

#3 Trucklady – We can’t convert our families all at once. At least they got you a few things! Each one was one thing you didn’t have to get yourself! Really glad you went ahead and bought the rest of your wish list though. Several things on my wish list were sold out, so I’m waiting for restocks. The way I see it, that just stretches out the enjoyment of the holidays into January!

Not many of my friends or family understand what I’m doing either, but I can’t blame them because I don’t understand it myself! I just tell them that I am having fun and they have supported me for that reason alone. It’s also different than anything else I’ve done in my life, so in my opinion, it’s worth following it through to see where it leads!

That was great! Yes, it seems everything reminds me of Supernatural. Songs on the radio. Comments people make (I find myself answering with lines from the show!).
I’ve been lucky enough to get to go to Dallas con the last two years. I now have a LOT of pictures and autographs on my walls due to that fact! Unfortunately, my health is questionable. That’s life I suppose. It also makes me appreciate these things much more.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!!

Great story! I love how the little things we all say, do, and see remind us of our Supernatural Family now. I often smile or chuckle and if my friends don’t know the show it’s hard to explain why. But if I post it on Twitter there is always a friend that I know I made made smile or laugh as well. Thanks for a great holiday season Supernatural Family!

Just now am getting around to reading the Christmas posts. Busy holiday. But I loved this and it is so true. My daughter brought home a Christmas book called Mooseltoe.. and I of course thought of Sam. 🙂 I found myself seeing all sorts of Supernatural reference while out and about shopping or decorating. We are a little obsessed, aren’t we? 😀

Thank you nightsky this was fun to read. It’s amazing what can trigger a thought to Supernatural. A moose, an angel, hot wheels, egg nog, fruit cake, even a christmas tree(impaling some evil dudes). 😆

To everyone who commented about everyday things reminding us of Supernatural……
…….I find that I have to edit myself to not ALWAYs bring up a show reference in conversations with friends or answer with a line from the Show. I don’t want people to think that I am always thinking about show…..even though that might be the first place my mind goes! 😮

I read this article a day or two after Christmas and thought is was wonderful, but since I really don’t get into Christmas anymore I really didn’t have anything to add. But as the days have wore on I realized that this is happening to me all the time…I just finished reading the Hugh Howey’s Wool series–I kept thinking of the MoL bunker the whole time I was reading it. Then I got really sick and was laying on the couch coughing up my lungs so I pulled out my old Dead Like Me dvds (I decided to take a break from Supernatural)–of course I kept comparing it to Supernatural, especially in terms of the reapers. I was at the grocery store and parked next to a new Impala and was mentally critiquing it and thinking how awesome the boys version was in comparison. It seems no matter what I have been doing lately, it reminds me of Supernatural. This is when I realized that I did have a Supernatural Christmas, I just didn’t put up a tree!
