CW Upfronts: Supernatural Will Move To Tuesdays, Paired With New Show The Originals
I’ve been covering this over at TV For The Rest of Us, but The CW put out their 2013-2014 schedule this morning and once again, Supernatural is moving to a new night. Even though the pairing with “Arrow” was a spectacular boost for this network, they decided a new show would be better suited for that lead in. So, get your DVRs ready for 9 pm on Tuesdays!
What’s even weirder is “Supernatural” is getting paired with the new Vampire Diaries spinoff, “The Originals.” I guess that’s a strong lead in, but that really puts a downer on the stellar lineup designed to attract males to the network. Honestly, not a lot of this schedule makes sense at all. I don’t know about all of you, but my Tuesdays thanks to ABC, CBS, and now The CW have gotten extraordinarily overcrowded.
In sadder news for Nikita fans like myself, this is the show’s last season, they don’t have a slot on the schedule, and they’re only getting six episodes to close it out. Kind of stinks, but I guess they were given the chance to close it out.
Below is the schedule, and part of the press release that describes Supernatural’s season nine. No worries, it’s not spoilery unless you haven’t seen last night’s finale. For those that want to see the full press release and descriptions for all the shows, I have that over at TV For The Rest of Us. You can find it here:

So, what do you think Supernatural fans? Is this a good move, or has The CW lost it?
Like I mentioned on one of your TV For the Rest of Us articles, I am thankful that I watch my TV online. I don’t think there is a DVR created that would be able to handle Tuesdays as they are currently scheduled. I just don’t understand why they did not pair Vampire Diaries and the Originals together – that would have given them a very strong night since it is the same target audience. I also don’t see the wisdom of separating Arrow and Supernatural since the pairing also gives them a strong night. Hart of Dixie and Beauty and the Beast? Really? So to answer your question, Alice – I think CW has lost it. 🙂
IMO this makes sense. They have three of there strongest show..Supernatural, Arrow, and The Vampire Diaries with new shows hoping people who watch these will stay and watch the new shows. And pairing Supernatural with The Vampire Diaries spinoff is a good move since The Vampire Diaries is a strong show for them and I’m sure this spinoff series will be just as strong..it seem to be highly anticipated. It really makes my Monday and Tuesday watching busy. All the shows I enjoy now come on those two nights and I have nothing to watch the rest of the week. I guess I’ll watch my two favorites..Supernatural and Beauty and the Beast and record the rest. It will give me something to watch the rest of the week..LOL

I feel the same way. Makes total sense to me. Though I will say I loved SPN airing on Wednesday nights. It really made my week just fly by. I mean WHERE did this past season go? Seems as though we just got back from hellatus. Now someone just needs to come up with a new moniker for Tuesdays…
Don’t they know I arrange my teaching schedule around Supernatural? Damn!!!
HA Lynn! I had to laugh at this. Although I can’t control all of my teaching assignments, I was ecstatic when Supernatural first moved from Fridays to Wednesdays because I always teach until 9PM on Friday nights and could never watch it live. Tuesdays should be OK too, unless I end up with a Tuesday night class this fall (hopefully not!).
E!!! What do you teach??? I’m a teacher too and have introduce myself to Lynn over at fangasm. Didn’t know you were a teacher also!!
Hi. I am a teacher as well. Nice to know there are several of us out there. I too will have to rearrange my tv. Glad they did not put SPN on Friday which is usually where a network puts shows they want to kill, although it did not work with SPN earlier in its attempt. I really thought Arrow/SPN was a winning team, but I guess the CW wants to ensure a success to they are piggy backing Arrow with a new show. I always believe if it isn’t broken, do not fix it. The CW might end up losing more that it gains, but TV executives play it. I will find SPN on Tuesdays no matter what. Not sure I want any other Vampire story. I do not enjoy the Diaries anyway, so the change is not going to make me run home for Arrow. Losing me there, CW. There is lots of mileage left to SPN given the finale I just saw, so let’s keep up our viewership.
I don’t know how I feel about this news yet, I’m going to have to check my Tuesday schedule, but I have a bad feeling that it’s going to be way overcrowded. Oh well, if anything has to go so I can watch SPN live, then it’s bye-bye to those shows. :sigh:
Full circle! Supernatural back to it’s Tuesdays nights. Hope this gets more “live” viewers, I want SPN to be the little show that went down on the CW’s history, as the show with more episodes than any other show…
Since I’m not living anywhere near the US, it doesn’t matter to me, I suppose. There are definitely more power outtages on Thursdays and Wednesday evenings, so Tuesday is better? 😀
My only qualm is that we won’t be able to say Winchester Wednesday anymore. Alternate suggestions, anyone? Show does have a history with “Tuesday”
The Original Supernatural Night or Supernatural’s Original Night…. lol lame I know, but I couldn’t help it!
They’ve paired their three strongest shows with their the new big hopes to optimise the new shows’ chances of success.
I would say, as The Originals has a built in audience the CW recognises that it’s the one new show that doesn’t need to sit behind a show drawing high numbers in hope of audience flow on. They would already have a pretty good idea of what The Originals will be expected to do ratings wise due to the back door pilot.
Of course they also know a long running show like Supernatural has a dedicated viewer base who will follow and watch the show on any night, as that move to Fridays proved.
I think this also looks like they’d be pretty optimistic for the new Tuesday night line-up. The Originals + Supernatural together have the possibility to create a very strong night for the CW, whereas Wednesday and Thursday both have new and untested product, which if unsuccessful could weaken those nights substantially.
Looks like pretty standard programming thinking to me (if programming can be called thinking….working in network TV makes you question that every damn day!). Let’s hope they allow Supernatural to ride it out now on Tuesdays! And by ride it out, I mean never end!
Oh and on a shallow note, because I can’t help myself, Elijah & Klaus followed by Sam & Dean is a smokin’ hot bro night! Just sayin’ .

Maybe this would be a good starting point for our new Tuesday tag. Somebody creative needs to come up with something regarding “Tuesdays” and “smokin’ hot bro’s”. Come on you guys…. 😆
Tuesday? I’m in…
[MUFFLED HEAT OF THE MOMENT LAYING IN THE DISTANCE]
Tuesday…. Pig in a Poke!!!
”‘Tuesday…. Pig in a Poke!!!'”
LMAOWTPOME: Laughing my a** off with tears pouring out my eyes…!
“EDITORS’ NOTE”
I believe the quote should be…”‘Tuesday: Pig ‘n’ a poke.'”
Still LMAOWTPOME…!
Well, it may be standard network thinking; but someone needs to tell the network it SUCKS!! I hate it when they do this. Try to trick people into watching a new show by putting it with an established show. They had a really great night of TV with Arrow and Supernatural together. I looked forward to it all week. I have a novel idea. Why don’t you make other great nights of TV and quit playing three card monty with the ones you have! It shows just how little the network cares about the viewers. Which is ironic as we are their business. Just because they always do it this way, doesn’t mean it works ; or that they should. I will watch Supernatural no matter what night; but now ratings may drop. Also, it is only one show. As I have no interest in “The Originals”, my night will be like playing hopscotch!! Why can’t they just leave a good thing alone
Let me tell you, you should see Aussie TV. It’s a never ending schedule change week in week out. I work in Network TV, in promos…constant, time changes, constant! From what I see of U.S. Network TV, it’s a much more stable schedule.
Wow, I guess I can’t complain then. I’ve never been to Australia. Looks beautiful. Guess it is a lot different than the states though.
I kind of understand their reasoning and I only watch The Voice on Tuesdays and I always DVR it and then skim past the sob stories and the commercials and cut 2 hours down to 45 minutes, so this wont’ be too bad. I did hope they would keep Wednesdays intact, but I guess not. My very silly hope was that if they moved Supernatural they would move it to Monday, not because it is a strong night, not because it fits my schedule but because Monday is the only night where Supernatural has not been shown on a regular basis. I kind of wanted Supernatural to “run the table” as it were before it closes its doors. Oh well, I was being silly.
What about Two Brother Tuesdays? (Kinda sucky, I know, but better than nothing. Also true if you plan to watch the Originals).
Congratulation 🙂 ??
