Robin’s Rambles – “Supernatural” 7.21 , “Reading is Fundamental”
Kevin is able to read what’s on the stone. What’s Leviathan? he asks Sam. It hurts a little, like looking through somebody else’s glasses, but it’s about Leviathan, how they came to be, God locked them away, like in jail, because they’re so. . .he gazes up at Sam. They’re real, aren’t they? he asks. They are and they’re here, admits Sam–does it say anything about how to kill them?==’cause that’s kinda been a problem. I dunno, says Kevin, looking at the stone, it’s hard to focus on it. Something’s up, says Meg, as the lights on the room begin to flicker. Seeing her eyes go black, Kevin cries out and backs away from her. A blond woman appears, calls Meg “Demon” and sends her into the wall with one movement of her hand. Kevin sits on the bed, breathing heavily, terrified.
Cas, picking up the game pieces from the floor, senses something. What? asks Dean. Sam–he’s talking to angels, says Cas.
A demon whore and a Winchester, says the blond–again–step away from the prophet! Me? asks Kevin. Soulkeeper of the word on earth, we are here to take you, says the blond, who has a man accompanying her. What do you mean, ‘take’? asks Kevin nervously. Kill the demon and her lover, the blond orders. That’s not how it works, begins Meg, as the man approaches her, hand outstretched. Meg tosses a fireball at him, stopping him. Where did you get that? demands the blond. It’s clear something/someone else is in the room with them, and a smiling Castiel appears. Hi, he says. You’re alive, the man says happily. You, says the blond accusingly. Hello, Hester, says Cas. You smoked thousands in heaven, gave a big, scary speech and then you were gone, she accuses–what the hell was that? Rude, for one thing, admits Cas. Where have you been? the man asks. Inias, Hester, I know you want something, says Cas–answers, I wish–there are still many things I can teach you–I can offer–perspective–here, pull my finger. Hester looks at him like he’s crazy. Cas says, Meg will get another light and I will blow it out again, this time it’ll be funny, we’ll all look back and laugh. (LOL! angel parlor tricks!) You’re insane, says Hester, shaking her head. Hey, heads up, sunshine, says Dean, banishing the angels from the room with the famous sigil written in his own blood. All angels blown back to their own corners, says Dean, we got three, four hours, tops. Meg is brandishing an angel-killing knife. Meg, where did you get that? demands Sam. A lot of angels died this year, she blathers, but she’s interrupted by Kevin, who screams, twice, “WHAT’S HAPPENING??” What is that? asks Dean. Kevin Tran, introduces Sam, he’s in Advanced Placement. (LMAO!) Kevin miserably tries to catch his breath, pressed against the back of the bed.
They have filled Kevin in–the Leviathan monsters are real, angels are real, just no wings, but, per Dean, junkless. So, Kevin, says Dean, you can read the chicken scratch on the God rock, huh?–it’s back in one piece, I see, and you’re saying there’s some sort of higher punch Dick recipe in there somewhere? It’s some kind of in case of emergency note, says Kevin–what do they mean by prophet? Oh, no, really? asks Dean. Yeah, that’s what the angels said, reports Sam. I don’t wanna be a prophet, says Kevin. No, you don’t at all, agrees Dean. We’d better start running and hiding, advises Meg, or do you want to tangle with those wing-nuts twice? Sorry, did you say WE? asks Dean. I’m on the angels’ radar now, she reminds him, you think I don’t need a little safety in numbers? We’ll go to Rufus’ cabin, kid’ll do his book report there, says Dean.
They make a stop at a mini-mart along the way to pick up stuff to eat. Kevin is sleeping. There’s a news report on the TV inside about Kevin, about his kidnapping and claim that he had been chosen, etc. Outside, Meg, reading a magazine, spots two demons. Oh, crap, she says. Sam reports to Dean, who is pumping gas, that they have a new wrinkle–Kevin’s gone missing, and it’s gone Federal. Great, so now we’re kidnappers, says Dean. Not if we shut up about it, says Meg–why, who did we kidnap? Sam and Dean just look at each other, stunned by her lack of intelligence here.
They’re back on the road, it’s dark, and Kevin awakens with a start. When asked what’s the matter, he replies, “Just my life. . .future, girlfriend and Mom’s car.” Meg gets a call from Cas. Where is he? asks Dean anxiously. Shut up! orders Meg–no, Cas, you talk. He’s in a place called Perth, surrounded by unhappy dogs, she says–he’s in a dog track in Perth. She tells him the dogs are unhappy because the rabbit’s fake, then tells him they’re on highway 94 north of St. Cloud MN, just passing mile marker 79. Cas immediately appears between Meg and Kevin in the back seat, causing the latter to shriek in shock. Kevin, this is Castiel, introduces Meg. You’re one of the angels? asks Kevin. Cas touches Kevin’s nose with his finger. Boop, he says. Meg, are you hurt? asks Cas, who explains that the two angels they met were from his old garrison; it looks like Hester’s taken over–we were assigned to watch the earth–often it was boring–the wars are very boring, the sex–repetitive, I was their captain–isn’t that strange? Why are they pissed at us now? asks Sam. Those racing dogs were absolutely miserable, says Cas, they could only think in ovals. Don’t make me pull this car over, says Dean angrily, why are angels after us? Why are you angry? asks Cas, hurt. Just stay on target, says Dean, more gently. There’s no reason for anger, says Cas, they’re only following protocol–if the word of God is revealed a keeper will awaken, like this hot potato right here–and he tweaks Kevin’s nose repeatedly. Please stop that, says Kevin, smacking Cas’ hand away. Anyway, says Cas, garrison code dictates you take the keeper to the desert to learn the word away from men. What kind of sense does that make? asks Dean–he has to tell us so we can use it. It’s not in his shiny red apples, says Cas. I can’t live in the desert, protests Kevin, I’m applying to Princeton! Screw the garrison, we need the tablet to end Dick Roman’s soylent us crap, says Dean. If you want the word, you’re going to have to duck Hester and her soldiers, says Cas. You’re in our corner, right, Cas? asks Sam. I don’t fight anymore, says Cas, I watch the bees. Dean and Sam exchange looks of exasperation: Cas, king of the non sequitirs!
Rufus’ cabin – Let’s leave off all angel proofing sigils be expelled too, says Cas. As long as we’re invisible to your angel buddies, it works for me, says Sam, painting something on the wall. I’m sure you’re pretty hungry, so as soon as we get settled, we’ll get some dinner going, says Dean. This looks like a sex torture dungeon, opines Kevin–is this a sex torture dungeon? Waving a scythe as he says it, Dean says, no, this is not a sex torture dungeon–get over here, sit down and read.
Sam sits down. Cas, sniffing the inside of a ceramic deer bank remarks, you seem troubled–of course, that’s a primary aspect of your personality, so I sometimes ignore it. Okay, says Sam, right now I’m just wondering about you. You’re worried about the burden I lifted from you, says Cas. I thought I was done for, says Sam–do you see Lucifer? I did at first, says Cas, but that was a projection of yours, sort of an aftertaste, now I more see everything. Meg listens, drinking booze. It’s funny, continues Cas, I thought I was done for, too, the weight of all those mistakes, all those lives and souls lost, I couldn’t take it, either, I was lost until I took on your pain–strange to think that that helped, but– I know you never did anything but try to help, says Sam, I realize that, Cas, and I’m grateful–we’re all grateful–and we’re going to help you get better, okay. no matter what it takes. What do you mean, better? asks Cas. Sam gulps and looks at him.
While writing down what he reads from the stone, Kevin experiences tremors and has to stop. This is all too much–what’s happened to my life? the boy says–I’m just a kid from Michigan, I didn’t want to be a wordkeeper!–I’m not prepared for the fact of the supernatural! Dean places a paper bag over his face to help stop the hyperventilating, pats him on the back, urges him to breathe, take it easy. I get the impression this isn’t the first time he’s had to do this to Kevin. I dunno, man, what can I say, Dean says, you’ve been chosen, and it sucks, believe me–no use asking why me, because the angels, they don’t care–maybe they just don’t have the equipment to care–it seems like when they try, it just breaks them apart. Bag tossed away, Kevin says, I just want to be the first Asian-American president of the United States. Do your homework, Dean deadpans. Kevin smiles wanly and returns to work.
Meg meets the two demons she saw at the gas station stop, and she says she has the angel, Castiel, to turn over to them! Roscoe thinks Castiel is dead. Right, ’cause you’re in that loop, she says. Where is he, then? asks Roscoe. First I want to know how many of you jerks I have to cut in, says Meg. Think we’re stupid? asks Roscoe, we didn’t tell anybody! I love demons, says Meg, and knifes Roscoe’s friend. She gets into a fistfight with Roscoe, but ultimately knifes him to death, too, and heads down the road, leaving both bodies in her wake.
Once she enters the cabin, she finds herself stopped by a Devil’s Trap. The lights come on. Sam, Dean and Cas are awaiting for her. Didn’t expect to see you back, says Sam. Not without the King’s Army, says Dean, holding out his hand–knife. She gives it to him. Typical, she says, I save our bacon, and you’re sitting here waiting by a Devil’s Trap–seriously, I just killed two of Crowley’s men, I could have gone the other way on that. It’s true, incidentally, says Cas, there’s other demons’ blood on that blade. Look. says Meg, I’m simpler than you think–I figured out one thing about this world, just one, pretty much–you find a cause and you serve it, give yourself over and it orders your life–Lucifer and Yellow Eyes, their mission was it for me. So what, says Dean, we should trust you because you wanted to free Satan from hell? I’m talking cause, douchebag, she says, as in reason to get up in the morning, obviously, these things shift over time, we learn and we grow–now for me currently, the cause is bringing down the king, and I know I need help to do it. Crowley ain’t the problem this year, says Dean. When are you gonna get it, Crowley’s ALWAYS the problem, says Meg, he’s just waiting for the moment to strike–I know what I’m supposed to do, and it isn’t screw Sam and Dean or lose the only angel who’ll go to bat for me. The three men look at each other, waiting to find out exactly WHAT her raison d’etre is. Sam, who has been listening intently to Meg’s passionate entreaty, steps forward and opens the Devil’s Trap so Meg can come in. This is good, says Cas, harmony, communication–now our only problem is Hester. What? asks Meg. Here we’re hidden from the garrison, points out Cas, when you killed a demon, you put out a pretty clear beacon. She stands next to Cas. We need better angel-proofing, now, she says. At that moment, the door blows away, and the two bad angels are with them. YOU TOOK THE PROPHET FROM US? rants Hester to Cas. I’m sorry? says Cas, not sure it’s the right thing to say. You have fallen in every way imaginable, she accuses him. Please, Castiel, we have to follow the code, begs the other angel, help us follow our work. He can’t help you, he can’t help anybody, says Dean. We don’t need his help, or his permission, says Hester angrily–the keeper goes to the desert tonight! Kevin, terrified, the stone gripped in his arms, is being held in the strong grip of the male angel. Back off, Dean orders, we’re actually trying to clean up one of your angel’s messes–you know that! He’s right, says Cas, an angel brought the Leviathan back into this world and they begged him not to do it. Just give us some time, okay, says Dean, we will take care of your prophet. Why should we give you anything? sneers Hester at Dean–after everything you have taken from us?–the very touch of you corrupts!–when Castiel first laid a hand on you in hell, he was lost!–for that, you are going to pay. She steps forward to harm Dean, but Cas intervenes and says, please, they’re the ones we were put here to protect. No, Castiel, she says, and smacks him across the face, sending him to the floor. When Sam and Dean try to help Cas, the male angel stops them. Hester whales on Cas, punching him with each no: no more madness, no more promises, no more new gods. She hits him over and over, and Sam and Dean flinch with every one of her blows. She holds up an angel-killing knife, about to kill Cas, but the male angel stops her. No, please, there’s so few of us left! he pleads. She hits her fellow angel with the back end of the knife, felling him. “You wanted free will, now I’M making the choices!” cries Hester, and is about to thrust the knife into Cas in a killing blow when SHE is killed–by Meg, who has thrust an angel-killing knife into her back. Cas, kneeling, blood running in a flood from his nose, looks up at her. “What?–someone had to,” she says.
These are strange times, Inias tells Cas. I think they’ve always been, the latter says. I wish you’d come with us, Inias says. I’m not part of the garrison anymore, sorry, says Cas.
Kevin hands his notebook to Sam, who thanks him and says not all people could have handled this. You doin’ all right there, Chosen One? teases Dean. Yeah, says Kevin, smiling. Get ready, Kevin Tran, says Inias. It appears a coterie of angels are about to take him and the stone somewhere. “Bring the Keeper to his home,” orders Inias, “we can watch over him there.” There’s the sound of angels’ wings and only Sam, Dean and Cas remain. I couldn’t find Meg anywhere, reports Dean. Yes, well, she enjoys laying low, says Cas, smiling. Leviathan cannot be slain but by a bone of a righteous mortal washed in the three bloods of the fallen, reads Sam aloud from Kevin’s notebook–says we need to start with the blood of a fallen angel. You know me, says Cas, holding out a vial of his blood, always happy to bleed for the Winchesters. What are you gonna do, Cas? asks Dean. I dunno, says a smiling Cas, isn’t that amazing? He flies away. Let’s get to work, says Dean, slapping Sam on the back.
We’re doing everything we can, Mrs. Tran, a man assures Kevin’s frantic mother. He said he’d had a seizure, she says, what if they hit him?–what if he has a brain injury? You need to trust us, okay? the man assures her, it won’t help to wear yourself out with worry. There’s the sound of wings flapping; Kevin appears in the room, flanked by the two angels. Kevin’s mother hugs him effusively. Who are you? she asks the two men with him. It’s okay, Mom, Kevin assures her, they brought me back–they’re keeping me safe. The man who’d been with Kevin’s mother says, I don’t believe that’s true–rock beats scissor. He plunged his hand into the chest of one; black goo issues from his mouth. Leviathans beats angels. He kills the other angel, too, as Kevin and his mother watch in horror. Hello, Kevin, he greets, but this is our old Leviathan friend, Edgar!
——————————————–
Oh, no, Kevin is now a prisoner of the Leviathans, his angel guardians dead and gone. Dean and Sam have hopefully learned how to permanently kill these creatures, but it doesn’t sound like it’s going to be easy, and Meg and Cas, their only allies, have both disappeared for the time being. Bobby will want to help, of course, but as a ghost, his ability to do so is catch as catch can, and his anger issues just may be more hindrance than help.
I liked this episode, but give it about an 8 on my like-o-meter. Kevin was an interesting addition to the humans who learn they have special powers, and I loved the way Dean dealt with him. He understood what it was like to be chosen against your will, since he and Sam have first-hand knowledge of been-there, done that. It sucks. He was able to calm him down using the paper bag for hyperventilating and just plain, simple talking. I do hope Dean lives long enough to become a father for real. He’s be great.
What can I say about crazy Cas? I loved him. He was funny, sad, a flower child who talked barbed male cat penises (that’s so when they withdraw after sex, the sperm will be pelted all over the female’s vaginal cavity, making conception more likely, by the way). He was gentle, mournful, SORRY!, regretful, helpful, childlike, and Misha Collins brought home the role brilliantly.
Rachel Miner was much better this episode than the last time we saw her, too. Her impassioned speech about dedicating herself to one cause very moving. I still can’t figure out why she left the cabin to go kill those demons, especially since it ended up bringing the angels down upon them all, but she got rid of the murderous Hester, so the end justified the means, I guess. I was scared that she had turned on the brothers and Cas, at first, but glad that she hadn’t. I’m still not sure whose side she’s on and hope Sam and Dean never completely turn their backs on her.
Once again, we have a quest to get rid of the Big Bad. Like having to collect the four rings to put Lucifer back in his cage, we now have to collect something to get rid of the Leviathans. Just once, it would be nice if all the brothers had to do was shoot the Big Bad with an ordinary bullet to get rid of it. That would take away all the fun, right?
Two eps to go. Should be very exciting as everything coalesces–the Winchesters, the Leviathans (Roman), Castiel, Crowley (I’m sure he’ll be back), Meg, Kevin, the angels.
I can’t wait! And for those who haven’t heard, we got an eighth season!
QUESTIONS:
1. What did you think of Kevin of a character? Did you feel that, given his high intelligence level, he shouldn’t have been so terrified of what he encountered?
2. Are you happy with the brothers’ current relationship? Why or why not?
3. How do you feel about Meg at this point in the storyline? Were you surprised when Sam opened up the Devil’s Trap to let her in? Do you trust her?
4. What do you think about the new task facing the Winchesters? Hard? Easy? Will Cas/Meg/Bobby be hindrance or aid in helping them achieve it?
5. Do you think Crowley is going to be a help or hindrance to the brothers in getting rid of the Leviathan?
6. Grade the episode. Love it/like it/hate it?
7. Are you happy that SUPERNATURAL received the go-ahead for an eighth season or do you think it should have gone out after season 5 or even earlier?
1. What did you think of Kevin of a character? Did you feel that, given his high intelligence level, he shouldn’t have been so terrified of what he encountered?
Yearrah, Kevin was grand. He kinda reminded me of a male Rachel Berry from Glee in the way he acted, especially at the start when he quoted the statistic about Princeton. I do think that given his high level of intelligence, his reaction was totally understandable. If he has compartmentalised his life down to rigid time slots I don’t think there’s be space in his brain for thinking about angels, demons and prophets of the Lord etc. (Though I do wonder what he was reading in his limited free time if, when he saw, blades and knives and crap, he immediately thought of sex torture dungeons.)
2. Are you happy with the brothers’ current relationship? Why or why not?
To be honest, I haven’t thought about it. They didn’t have a whole lot of interaction in this episode. I’m not going to put a huge amount of faith in the brothers relationship until they are both in good places because the past few seasons have shown us how damn shaky the relationship is.
Even at the moment, for me, Sam and Dean are still too raw and too troubled to be able to focus energy into their relationship. Just because they’re not having words with each other doesn’t automatically equate to a strong relationship because the damage done to each other goes deep. I think that Dean has been too burned to fully trust Sam and Sam is too damaged to trust himself. I don’t think Dean’s head is in the right place and this prohibits him from trusting anyone. Maybe in time, but not this season because everything is still too fresh and there has been zero time to process.
3. How do you feel about Meg at this point in the storyline? Were you surprised when Sam opened up the Devil’s Trap to let her in? Do you trust her?
I like her. I don’t know why and I know I shouldn’t but I do. She is, and always has been very singular minded and I dare say she will burn or bed anyone she needs to in order to get what she wants. She needs the Winchesters at the moment and they, like it or not, need her so I wasn’t surprised that Sam opened the Devil’s Trap (I keep forgetting that Meg possessed Sam for a time. I wonder if, deep down, he knows something about her or that affected him, especially later when it came to Ruby), Sam is quite pragmatic in that regard. He might not like it but he knows it has to be done. The Winchesters don’t trust her, and never will, and she knows it too. I doubt she cares though.
One thing Castiel said about Meg got me thinking. He mentioned something along the lines of ‘All that thorny pain, so beautiful’. As an angel he should be able to see her true face, the whole time. Perhaps he can see deep inside Meg, the ‘before the decades of torture turned her into a demon Meg’. We keep forgetting that were it not for the grace of God that could have been Dean, or Sam or John. Castiel did seem to genuinely care about her in this episode so maybe he doesn’t see her as a ‘second class citizen’ but what she was and maybe could be again.
Plus the way Meg reacted when Sam and Castiel were having ‘the talk’ was strange. She seemed almost upset. I kinda think there’s something deeper going on there. Not a ‘Mestiel’ thing but more of an understanding and acceptance. Dunno.
4. What do you think about the new task facing the Winchesters? Hard? Easy? Will Cas/Meg/Bobby be hindrance or aid in helping them achieve it?
I think it will be a typical day at the office for the Winchesters! They’re going to need Castiel and Meg and Bobby and Kevin and whoever else they can get their hands on to get the job done. I do think though, that while Bobby etc will be players in solving the Leviathan problem, the Winchesters will be the orchestrators.
5. Do you think Crowley is going to be a help or hindrance to the brothers in getting rid of the Leviathan?
I know that Crowley would sell the Winchesters out for a turnip (and probably has) but given that the Leviathans, as with Lucifer, are a threat to his power, he’s going to side with the Winchesters. Now whether that be by giving blood (though I don’t really know how Crowley will be one of the bloods of the fallen. Unless he’s a fallen demon?) or providing intel, he’ll do what he can to keep his ass in power. The Leviathans would eat Crowley for breakfast and he knows it. Like Meg, Crowley needs the Winchesters.
6. Grade the episode. Love it/like it/hate it?
About an 8. I did like it. I thought the boys (I really need to start calling them ‘the men’) were much more in character this week than they were last week so that helps. Apart from Sam leaving the Word of God behind (and I’ve got to thinking that maybe Sam’s hair and sideburns are actually diverting energy from his giant brain) there weren’t too many ‘wtf’ moments. Edgar tops Dick in the creepy factor for me so again, that helped.
7. Are you happy that SUPERNATURAL received the go-ahead for an eighth season or do you think it should have gone out after season 5 or even earlier?
While the announcement wasn’t unexpected, it’s always a relief to hear the official words. There’s always that tiny fear factor that comes into play when waiting for it. Still, as has been shown on the site, the numbers for it are always good, overseas markets, DVD sales etc etc are very strong so it would have been illogical for it to not be renewed.
Thanks Robin
Playing SORRY! with Cas, Dean picks up a card and reads it. We weren’t sure which monkeys were going to make it, explains Cas; No offense, but I was backing the Neanderthals because their poetry was just amazing; it’s in perfect tune with the spheres, but in the end it was you, the Homosapien Sapiens–you guys ate the apple, invented pants. Where can I find this Metatron, is he still alive? asks Dean. Sorry, I think you have to go back to start, says Cas.
Just something I thought on while reading that I didn’t notice before. When Cas talks about the creation and then says to Dean, I think you have to go back to the start, I thought this might have to do do with what the Bible says, In the beginning was The Word (of God)…that was the start of everything. Is this a clue, or something that we are supposed to guess?? hmmmm
1. What did you think of Kevin of a character? Did you feel that, given his high intelligence level, he shouldn’t have been so terrified of what he encountered?
i think he was in character , i mean considering that his life is very orginised in every minute of it , so he wouldn’t think about the supernatural as real stuffs. these people believe only what they can see and all that , so yeah , he did great .
2. Are you happy with the brothers’ current relationship? Why or why not?
i don’t know how to feel about it , i mean , these last epiosdes are very big and everything is on the edge and its more than wincheester’s personal matters , you know , not that mean i like it but , im saying that they don’t have time to have cotact with each other , but i hope in the next episodes we see them get involve in the big finale somehow.
3. How do you feel about Meg at this point in the storyline? Were you surprised when Sam opened up the Devil’s Trap to let her in? Do you trust her?
well , i don’t like meg , she is real a pain in the ass , but i would say im curoios about her actions right now , i thik she is up to something , she always have been , she is a demon!!! so i don’t buy that “doing this becuase of crowely blah blah crap”.
4. What do you think about the new task facing the Winchesters? Hard? Easy? Will Cas/Meg/Bobby be hindrance or aid in helping them achieve it?
things were never easy for the Winchesters! and considering we have a season 8 , it wont end easy in this season finale , i think cas and bobby will help , becuase they’re the winchester’s sidekick friends. but meg? i dont thik so , she better not! 🙂
5. Do you think Crowley is going to be a help or hindrance to the brothers in getting rid of the Leviathan?
i like crowely , somehow , but he doesn’t really show his actual slef in any seasons before and we don’t exactly know what is going on with him m but i would guess , if the task is bringing down his number 1 enemy , well , why not? maybe he will help!
6. Grade the episode. Love it/like it/hate it?
at frist i had too many feelings , but now , i loved it. obviously one of the best of season 7 so far which we didn’t have so many this year… a lot of double sides meaning , fun moments and heart-breaking too. so i give 9!
7. Are you happy that SUPERNATURAL received the go-ahead for an eighth season or do you think it should have gone out after season 5 or even earlier?
I AM DAMN HAPPY! but i want it to have a strong and good story line , not as much big as leviathans ,( which im wondering how they can bring up something bigger than them in the show!) , i love this show so much , im living this show everyday and it effected me in many ways , so i’ll be so happy to have a new season . but please let be good , horror , and full of brotherly moments , plus , cas and bobby!! 😉
Perhaps we were not clear on the “No, wait! Stop!” angle.
Bobby had a nice quiet role in this too. I dunno if asking Cas for help was the best of plans either, he’s clearly not dealing with a full deck here.
Here’s hoping we see Baby in the final episodes anyways.
I’m surprised the boys don’t pull a Constantine and put borax in the sprinkler system, that would be a start….
Woof.
