Supernatural Nashcon 2012 Day Two – Jared and Jensen Breakfast and Panel Reports

Another Salute to Supernatural con has come and gone. I came to Nashville this weekend with a lot of skepticism. There were a lot of tickets available and after all, this was Super Bowl weekend. Turns out, there weren’t a lot of Giants and Patriots fans in the room. Only “Supernatural” fans!
Yes, on this final day the turn out was really decent. More chairs had to be brought out, so plenty came in for the day to see Jared and Jensen on the big stage. I did feel sorry for the boys though, and their bodyguard Clif. They had to fly out yesterday (8:40 flight time) and leave in the afternoon today. They didn’t even get to see the Super Bowl. They were in great spirits though despite the grueling schedule.
Other panels were done by Rob Benedict and Richard Speight Jr. They were supposed to be solo panels, but in Richard’s panel he kept calling Rob to the stage so many times it ended up being a joint panel. As usual, it was very entertaining and I was surprised to see how many people stayed around for Richard’s panel at 4:05, long after the action was over.
Below is all the action from day two, including a detailed account of the Jared and Jensen breakfast and panel. As usual, it had plenty of soundbites.
Breakfast. Beware, A Facial Hair Spoiler!
I was fortunate enough to get a transcript of the breakfast, so here’s the breakdown:
Let’s start with the hair report. Jared showed up today with a bit of fine looking scruff, as well as a beanie that hid his hair but really showed off those sideburns. I was a little stunned to find out Jared could have scruff when they’re filming, but it turns out that’s by design! SPOILER ALERT. Sam’s gonna have some facial hair when he faces his upcoming “going off the deep end” drama in episode 7.17. He claims it’s not for a good reason, Sam’s falling apart. Personally, I can’t wait to see that story line play out.
The discussion came up because of the sex scene in “The Slice Girls” where Castiel’s hand print wasn’t there. Jensen had an easy answer. When he was healed after “Swan Song,” it went away.
Jared tried some “Supernatural” trivia, identifying the girl Emma as the same actress who played Missy in “The Benders.” Jensen – “Really? I worked with her an entire day and I didn’t know.” (yes he was kidding). The crowd knew. Jared was hoping he would be sharing something with fans they didn’t know, but they did.
Karaoke was mentioned. When a lady said she bought a shirt off Matt’s back, Jensen had the best “What did she say?” reaction.
They had an interesting travel story. After working until 2 am on Saturday, they caught an 8:40am flight that was late getting to Minneapolis. The plane was overweight. They both motioned Clif to leave. Jared – “Everyone was laughing at us and then they’re ‘You know that guy, right?'” They ended up sitting on the tarmac burning fuel. They were 45 minutes late. When they got to Minneapolis they were in F terminal and had to get to C. All three of them were booking through the airport. They were pretty out of breath when they got to the plane.
So, they were hurrying and heard behind them, ‘Hey, that’s the Dean brothers.’ Jared – “If you would have said Sam brothers you would have got yourself a picture.” Jensen’s version – “We were bolting right past them and heard ‘It’s the Dean brothers!’ ‘Not today!'” he said and they kept going.
They’re actually finding it better to come in February to Nashville than last June (yeah, I was here too, it was really hot). Even though they’re both from Texas, they’ve been spoiled by LA and Vancouver.

Has Jensen driven the “new baby” yet. When a fan tried to clarify the Impala, Jensen’s like, “Yeah, I got it. I didn’t assume she was talking about a toddler.” Jared – “Do they come with wheels? I have one coming up. I feel like it is something I should know.” The answer is no, but he did have his head under the hood a couple days ago. They’ve put 20 or 30 grand into it.” Jared said that now that they’ve put that into it, they’re putting in 20 to 30 grand in storage fees. Bob Singer has told Jensen soon, but he still doesn’t know when.
They both gave everyone a big thank you on the People’s Choice Awards. A fan shouted, “Next year they should invite you.” Jensen – “That’s an idea. Imagine that.” Someone presented them a giant congratulations greeting card. Jared read from the envelope. “Matt Cohen needs a job.”
Another PCA story (and one we saw from Jim Michaels on Twitter) they set up a
backdrop and every crew member got their pictures taken in front of it holding those awards.
Jared mentioned that the show is in season seven, and that’s when a lot of shows say goodbye. Jensen – “What are you saying?” Jared – “We don’t want to say goodbye.” Jared talked about flying down and back the same day for the TCAs. He’s doing it to earn some time off when he’ll need it, like when the baby comes. Jensen said the episodes right now are Sam centric so that when they get closer to the due date he can split for a little bit.
Someone had pygmy goats, two boys. What do they think she named them? (Sam and Dean of course). “Jensen and Ackles,” Jared joked. Turns out that Dean is bigger. Jensen liked that, Jared went off by himself all hurt (yes, he was joking). “Congratulations on your pygmy goat.”
Do they wish there was more hand to hand combat like in “Skin?” Yes. That prompted a story from Jensen about some serious stunts for an upcoming episode. “Dean goes flying into some things.” Jensen’s stunt double, Todd, had trouble recently because the table he was crashing into wouldn’t break. He went down, slammed into the table, and got up hurting real good. Jensen was holding his head like “that had to hurt” and his stunt double just gave him a “yep.” Todd has been doing this for Jensen since “Dark Angel.” He’s never once heard Todd say he wasn’t okay. Jensen asked him how he was feeling after that hit and he said he broke three ribs. Jensen reminded him he had to “go through this door today.” He was fine with it. BTW, he did the table again and it didn’t break again. He tried it again the third time, got twice the height and wrecked the thing. Then he went through the french doors. All with broken ribs! Jensen admires his pain threshold.
Does Jensen like cowboy Dean or 40’s Dean? Cowboy
They have been using the Watchmen set a lot. A recent windstorm blew down a huge facade from that set and almost killed someone so they had to shut the backlot. They’ve had to find other places to shoot. A big movie is coming to town and they’re hoping they’ll get it back. The Seventh Sun, 300 million dollar budget. That’ll fix it up right!
What was it like working with Nicholas Lea? They’re kindred spirits when it comes to “The X-Files,” there’s a lot of crew members from that show. It was cool and he was fun to work with. What about Chad Everett? He came and watched Jensen on set. It felt kind of weird, but Chad did a great job and a wonderful man. Kevin McNally (Frank) has a strong presence, a real force in the room. Jared and Jensen both have found working with him refreshing.
What’s it like having Misha back on the set? It’s been really refreshing. Jared – “We miss him as much as you all do.” Jensen made the following season eight demands to Bob Singer. “Benedict, Speight, Mish, Beaver. Would you like me to continue?” Singer answered he got it. Jensen made it clear they’re not the only ones that want it.
That was the end of the breakfast and the boys went onto photo ops and private meet and great sessions.
The Panels
Rob Benedict kicked off the day with his panel, and this guy can tell stories. I’m looking forward to seeing him at more cons. He told us a funny story about filming an action scene in “Alias” (even if he found out later the camera was only on Jennifer Garner) and honored a little girl’s sweet question of “Are you a singer?” by singing her a line from “Jessie’s Girl.” For a warm up panel, he did a great job. The highlight though of the panel was Jensen crashing the stage and giving Rob a huge hug. “Isn’t he dreamy?” Rob said after Jensen left.
Shortly after Rob left Jared and Jensen came on. A lot of the information I have is from tweets (fine, my tweets) but here’s the highlights of what happened. Please keep in mind, the mics were so bad I couldn’t hear the questions. I could however hear the answers, so sorry if I don’t have specific questions with some of these to go with those answers.
First question, “You two are absolutely beautiful men.” Jared – “You need to get your vision checked.”
The craziest thing someone has done to them for attention. Jensen – A lady lept into his arms while he was walking in the lobby. The lady got him in a “spider monkey.” She was committed!
Question for Jensen, “You had the episode “Time After Time”…” Jared – “I was in that episode!” Jensen got to dress in period clothing, will Jared ever get too. Jared – “I don’t think so, the good and bad of being the straight character in the show.” Jensen – “What?”

The next questioner had a Patriots shirt. Jensen – “We’re not taking questions from Patriots today.”
Any of them have a fan boy moment. Jared mentioned how he Jensen and Gen went to a Pearl Jam concert in Vancouver. He squeezed Gen’s hand really hard and kind of freaked out when he saw Mike McCreedy. Jensen – “I had to leave the room, I was so embarrassed for him.” Jensen couldn’t think of one for him. “Jared couldn’t block it out, we were all there to remind him.” Perhaps Luke Perry, but it was Danneel that had the meltdown.
At this point Jared put the beanie back on. I was bumming, because I wanted to see the hair, but the hat did accent the sideburns and facial hair scruff he had going. Someone shouted to Jared a few minutes later, “Take off the hat!” Jared – “You take off the hat.”
Jensen talked about the spiked egg nog in AVSC. He said “Jared” spiked the egg nog, Jared said “Sam” did it. Oh yeah, the reaction kept in the final cut was the genuine one.
What are their favorite family scenes? Jared loves the brotherly scenes in Fresh Blood and “The Man Who Knew Too Much.” “I’m not leaving my brother alone out there.” I don’t believe Jensen provided an answer.
Jensen doesn’t cry with movies. “I’m just dead inside.” Jared asked, “Not Titanic?” Jensen – “Tears of joy when it was over.”
Any characters they wish weren’t killed? Jensen – Dracula, Jared – Gordon.
Jared confirmed they salted and burned Bobby. That reminded Jared, he cried during “Death’s Door.” He called Sera Gamble and said it was the first time he cried reading a script.
Jensen thinks there are ways for Bobby or anyone to come back. “Nobody is never really gone forever … There are always ways to do Supernatural things on our show.” Jared – “Really?”
Not sure what prompted it, but Jensen went into this little thing where he couldn’t believe that the thing next to him could actually have a child. It’s if he found the notion ludicrious. Yes he was joking.
They were asked about Castiel’s return. They won’t give specifics, but Jensen believed reintroducing Castiel into the fold, and in Sam and Dean’s lives, could be done.
Do they enjoy comedy episodes? Jared – The material they’re given is overwhelming. They’ve got to have fun once in a while in episodes. Jensen – Producers catch a lot on the outtake reels and work that into future episodes.
Do they enjoy working on “Supernatural”? Jared – “I’m comforted to know it can’t get worse than this.” He’s joking people! Jensen talked lovingly about the crew, who he said in the time they have been on the show has only changed like 30 people.
At this point in the panel, I got to say Hi! to Clif Kosterman (@bodyguard4JandJ) who was walking around. He’s looking great today too. He noticed my live tweeting on the laptop and thought it was pretty cool. I think it was.
The topic of sex scenes came up. This got prompted a rather long answer. I didn’t hear the question, but it initially resulted in Jensen is fake crying and Jared being manly by moving the podium. Me thinks it implied that Sam’s sex scenes are more physical. Jared talked about soulless Sam sex, and then Jensen talked about his recent scene in “The Slice Girls.” She had the upper hand so he was playing it like “Wow, sweet!.”
The talk then veered to relationship issues. Jared – “Sam has always had weird relationship issues. He has this thing where these women always end up on the ceiling.” Jensen – Dean pays special attention to his partners. Jared – “Sam doesn’t worry about that stuff.”
They also talked about when filming those scenes, they try to make the other actors comfortable while on the set, be aware of their needs. They’re not big fans of those kind of sex scenes. It’s awkward and they have to be sensitive to the actors when stripping.
Jensen loves home improvement shows like “Holmes on Homes” and “How It’s Made.” Wow, he and my husband would be best friends then! Those shows are always on our TV.
Is there a death in “Mystery Spot” they would have like to have seen? They think it was covered. The fan wanted to see a moose attack. Jensen – “Where did you get that idea?”
Would they watch the show if they weren’t on it? Jensen – “If I wasn’t on this show, I would make time to watch it, only if someone else was playing Sam.”
Again, not sure of the question, but apparently Jensen does not have a car in real life. Clif and Johnny drive him around in Vancouver, in LA his wife has a car and drives. What kind of car would he have if he did have one? A 1970 Chevy Truck.
Was there any uncomfortable scenes with prosthetics or fake blood for them? Oh man, did this person open the door! Jared went first, for he had two. The first was for “In My Time of Dying” when they had the eye prosthetics for his swollen eye from “Devil’s Trap.” It was July, it was super hot, and in between takes he was just lying on the stretcher. The sun began to melt the glue of his eye prosthetic and it got into his eye. It hurt. The medic ended up taking that off and using an eye bandage instead. Also, the bleeding eyes for “Bloody Mary was a pain. He had this tube running up his back and the stuff oozing out of his eyes wasn’t really uncomfortable.
Jensen’s story mirrored Jared’s for “Swan Song.” He had those face prosthetics on too when his face was banged up by Lucifer. It took an hour and a half to two hours to put on. When Dean crawled over to the hole and started crying, glue went in his eye. It really stung. “Thanks for bringing that horrible memory back.”
When is the Impala coming back? Jensen – “It’ll come back.” He did a lot of complaining for years about the Impala condition so they finally dropped about 20,000 to 30,000 in one of the Impalas. “It is sweet man.”
What is their favorite episode? Both have the same. “Death’s Door.” Great acting, great directing, amazing to watch.
Last question. Fan gushed to Jensen over his musical concerts with Steve Carlson. Will he continue that or go into music? No, Jensen is an actor and maybe a director. He admires what musicians do, but he’s not one.
They thanked everyone for being here, and thanked us for the People’s Choice Awards. That little moment got me a little misty.
After the panel, Jared and Jensen went over to the Impala on display to take a look. The fans followed and flashbulbs were going off everywhere. They were impressed to say the least.
Closing Moments
Richard Speight Jr. was the last panel of the day, and it as usual was very entertaining. The most memorable moment involved him going around the audience asking people their porn names. Once he was finished with that (which was a total riot) it was my turn to ask a question. Did it feel lame! I just wanted to know what it was like meeting Peyton Manning. That’s an item on my bucket list! He said Peyton is really funny and cool. So there. Brian Buckley and Rob Benedict did join him on stage too, and apparently Richard’s favorite band now is Brian Swain (yes a cross between the Brian Buckley Band and Rob Benedict’s Loudon Swain). Brian Buckley started singing In Sync (or Backstreet Boys I can’t tell which) and the crowd joined in!
In one final note, Adam of Creation did explain why there would be no more Nashville cons. They need to have it in a place that makes it easier for their guests and ticket holders to come in. There are few direct flights into Nashville. That did create a problem for Jensen and Jared this weekend! They are looking at other east coast, perhaps southeast cities. Atlanta was the city shouted out the loudest.
And that’s a wrap for the last ever Nashville con! I’m thrilled I got an opportunity to enjoy it this time. In just one month, I get to do it all over again at LA con. Look for the coverage here and through my live tweeting at @winfambusiness.

Great recap, Alice! I’m so jealous for everyone who gets to go to con. I hope to go to Toronto 2012 – see how the finances do.
BTW, the breakfast with J2 is on youtube (part one; part 2 and 3 on under this posters profile as well): herehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FUkPFu_624&feature=related

Thanks Alice, I almost felt like I was there with you! How about Montreal for an East coast con? Then maybe I could go.
After working until 2 am on Saturday, they caught an 8:40pm flight that was late getting to Minneapolis.
Shouldn’t that be 8:40 am?
Sorry, corrected.
You deleted your other comment “’Nope, according to Clif their bodyguard on Twitter (and when I spoke to him on Sunday) they left Saturday evening. They didn’t arrive in Nashville until Sunday morning and were late for the breakfast.'”, so I figure you found out that Clif lied to you?
Whoa, where in the world are you going with this? Geez, I present pages of information here about the con and you’re nitpicking over that?
I misunderstood Clif. He didn’t lie. I surmised from his comments they were just getting started Saturday evening with I was tweeting with him. Correction made. Considering I was working the con all day with my nose buried in a laptop throwing out a few hundred tweets telling everyone what was happening there, one behind the scenes fact got by me. I certainly didn’t have the opportunity to be stalkerish and check flight times, like one other person suggested I do. Really? It’s a simple mistake.
Plus, what does the time have to do with it? The travel story is real and doesn’t change. What does it matter if it happened am or pm?
Okay, I’m done. Would you like to comment on anything else about the con? You know, the fun stuff?
Thanks for the recap! I was there but apparently missed a couple of things. Regarding the tease from Jensen about Jared becoming a father–Jared was putting a piece of his hair or lint or something he found on his pants on Jensen’s shoulder when he wasn’t looking.
Thanks for that! I was in the back and didn’t see that. I’m sure there was plenty I missed and I always enjoy people who were there (or saw a video) adding more info.
