Sofia’s Chicon Report

I was only able to attend one day of the convention this year and it has made me thirsty for more! The Q&A sessions are always of the most interest to me so I was happy to get to hear not only Jared and Jensen, but also Richard Speight answer audience questions. We’ll start with him first.
This was my first time seeing Richard Speight at a convention but from what I’ve read, I knew what to expect. Now I know why people rave about the karaoke!
It lead off with one of the strangest questions; if you were Jared or Jensen, what would you think of yourself? Richard didn’t quite know how to answer it at first, but found his way soon enough.
“I would think I was awesome and sexy. I would think shit, I’m tall!â€
Someone asked if playing the trickster has made him more interested in playing tricks and pranks. He answered with a story about how he liked to call Sebastian Roche’s hotel room at odd hours to tell him his laundry is ready to be picked up at the front desk. He then went on to mimic Sebastian with a really entertaining accent.
The next question for Richard was what themes he thinks Supernatural should cover that they haven’t covered already. To which he said something along the lines of “I don’t know. I’ve seen my episodes and that’s it.†Apparently he’s not an avid viewer!
When asked what his favorite part of being the Trickster was, he said that it was spending a day in an auditorium watching Jensen wrestle with women in their underwear.
Richard also talked about how he ended up as the Karaoke King. The people at Creation Entertainment approached him and asked him to host the karaoke. To say he was not pleased would be an understatement. He described his first time hosting karaoke as “the worst high school play of all timeâ€. “I don’t know how it went from an event I hate to me dressing up as a 1970’s drug dealer.†I definitely missed a good time at karaoke! Did any of you go? How was it? (From Alice – Awesome!)
One audience member asked if Richard would like to come back to the show in the future somehow and he expressed that he would love to come back as the trickster, not Gabriel. He even had a whole elaborate plan of how it would work out. I must admit I didn’t totally follow the logic, does anyone remember how he said it would work out? I know it made sense at the time.
That’s the basic gist of the Richard Speight Q&A. He is a very entertaining speaker! Please fill in any missing holes. It’s hard to keep up with a pen and paper.
When it was time for Jared and Jensen to come out I was in line hoping to ask a question. So forgive me if I’ve missed anything. It’s even more difficult to keep up with a pen and paper while standing in line!
The first question came from an audience member asking if the show has had any effect on their religious beliefs. Jared explained that the only time they have really been worried was when they talked about introducing angels in to the mix. He was most worried about presenting the view of the show as the right religious view. Jensen said that the best way he’s found to explain it is the way he explains it to his very religious grandmother. “Gran, it’s fake. It’s a TV show.†To which Jared looked shocked and said, “Wait, wait…do we have to talk about this again?â€
Poor Jared had to endure a few Smallville questions directed specifically at Jensen. He joked around quite a bit about not wanting to talk about Smallville. But it seems like Jensen and Jared would like to see Michael Rosenbaum on the show at some point. They made it clear that they are not in talks with him or anything, so don’t get too excited.
After being asked what kind of horse he and Genevieve own Jared somehow got onto a tangent that involved all kinds of gestures relating to pregnancy and birth. Jensen then joined in the fun pretending to hold the newborn baby. The gestures continued at one point later in the day after Jared mis-spoke saying “when I found out I was pregnant…â€.
Another audience member asked for some marriage advice from the two newlyweds. Jensen shared two words to live by “complete capitulationâ€. He got the advice from the president of the WB and he says it’s been working for him ever since with lines like “You’re right honey, what was I thinking?†Seems like good advice. Jared’s advice was to remember why you married them, because you love them. He also expressed the importance of open communication. These two seems like pretty great catches!
The next question was whether or not we’d have a meta episode this season. The answer was a little confusing. Jared immediately answered yes then asked for a proper definition of meta. He then said yes again and Jensen gave him a very confused look. They leaned over to whisper to each other followed by an “oooooooh yeah†from Jensen. Apparently they’ll be revisiting a place from a previous meta episode. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
The next question was one I was curious about too. Will we ever get to see Dean happy again? Of course he’s never really been all that happy but he’s had his ups and downs and we’ve been seeing a whole lot of down lately. Jensen responded by saying that there will definitely be some funnier episodes in which he’ll be the butt of the jokes, as usual. The girl then asked Jared if we’ll continue to see him affected by his time in Hell. Jared said that Sam will continue to have constant reminders throughout the season, then asked if we just wanted to see him cry. He then started to cry and according to Jensen all the cameras in the ballroom went up at once. Anyone get a good picture?
The next question came from an actress in the audience. She asked if Jared and Jensen had any good stories about working in inclement weather. They shared a story about a time they filmed a scene in the rain with umbrellas. According to them, Eric Kripke called after seeing the scene and said “Sam and Dean never use umbrellas, ever.â€; the reasoning being that Sam and Dean spend their days fighting evil, so why would they be babies about a little rain. I have to admit I’ve always found the fact that they don’t use umbrellas a little bad ass. I guess I have some pretty low standards for what it means to be a bad ass. Jared also shared that Route 666 was meant to take place in Mississippi but they had to change the location to Missouri because it started snowing while they were shooting.
Another interesting question came from a fan who wondered how they pretend to eat food, especially Jensen who is eating constantly. Jensen shared that if there’s a lot of eating involved in a scene he needs a spit bucket. But a lot of it is all about timing. Don’t eat when you’re not on camera and try not to eat till the end of the scene. Jensen then talked about an upcoming episode in which he has to eat the same burger over and over again. The burger was on some kind of tough bread that ended up cutting his lips. To which Jared said “Will anyone kiss it and make it better?â€
Side note: The way Jensen described eating the same burger again and again and their conversation about the meta episode re-visiting the site of an old meta episode makes me think of Mystery Spot. I wonder if we’re getting a Mystery Spot part 2 or something like it?
Another question I really liked came from an audience member who was wondering how the show would be different if it was on HBO or Showtime. Jensen immediately answered with “Wouldn’t it be awesome?†The consensus was that there would be a lot more swearing from Dean, “I can’t tell you how it hurts me sometimes to say friggin’.†The show is also not allowed to show people being shot in the head which Jensen seemed a bit disappointed about. He seemed intrigued by the idea of picking people off with an assault rifle Walking-Dead-style. He also expressed that he’d like to use the grenade that’s been sitting in the Impala’s trunk for 7 years but he’s been told that fake grenades are too pricy. I hope his wish comes true at some point. I’d like to see that grenade put to good use!
The next question was for Jensen. Were there any deleted scenes from The Girl Next Door? As it turns out, there were plans for the nacho cheese at the end. We were supposed to see the hot cheese poured over the clerk, who was actually a good friend of Jared and Jensen, but the scene was cut from the final episode. There was also another scene of Dean killing time in the cabin that was cut. I would like to see what Dean Winchester does with free time, especially without access to the magic fingers.
Another fan asked if Jared and Jensen have nicknames for each other. They do. They call each other J but to avoid confusion they also use Jrod and Jackles. Let the t-shirt making commence!
So there are the highlights of the Q&A session, again let me know if I missed anything you think people would like to know about! It was a great way to spend a day and I’m already looking forward to 2012.
@WinFamBusiness - OMG! Jared is fanning himself and that hair is wildly flapping everywhere. I’m dying here!!! #chicon
