Let’s Speculate: “How To Win Friends and Influence Monsters”
Warning!!!!!!!! If you haven’t seen tonight’s episode, read no further! There will be spoilers due to discussions of tonight’s episode and the preview for the next episode, so read no further unless you’ve watched it!!! Seriously!
Miracle of miracles, my baby is still quiet, the hubby is taking care of her, so I actually have a chance to do some speculating! Whooooooooo! Maternity leave is over…for this week. We’ll see about the next 18 years or so. So let’s speculate, shall we?
My Wishful Thinking Theory of the Week
Bobby almost dies next episode due to his wound/heart attack, but Cass saves his life because he’s not really dead. Totally happening. Definitely happening. 99.999% not happening, but, hey, a girl can dream, can’t she? More likely: Crowley saves Bobby because he seriously dislikes Leviathan and wants to help get rid of them, and chances of that happening without Bobby are slim. But wow, Ben Edlund has it out for Bobby this season, doesn’t he? First he burns his house down and then he tries to kill him off. Not cool, Mr. Edlund! Not cool. Bobby better not die is all I have to say. If he dies, I will be super pissed and upset. And it will pretty much kill Dean. He’s already on the edge as it is, and losing Cass and Bobby in a few months just might break him.
The Leviathan Master Plan
What is up with these monsters? I’m exceedingly curious about them now. I want to know what their master plan is. They have unlimited resources, seem to be working toward the destruction of the planet, and yet they have internal rules, a hierarchy, there are consequences for their actions. But the lower-level Leviathan can be taken out by a common household cleaner. Nothing can take down Dick, though. At least nothing the Winchesters have come across. So far they’re the ultimate sleeper cell. Their desire to stay off the radar is the most chilling part because they’re smart enough to want to avoid detection so they can continue their work unimpeded. Did they ever say why they wanted complete compliance from the Turducken eaters? I can’t remember. Sleep deprivation! If they did and I missed it, disregard what I’m going to say here, but I think it was so they could eat people without those people putting up a fight. It’s much easier to snack on someone who just doesn’t care what’s happening to them. Speaking of people who don’t care what happen to them…
The Dean Situation
Fatalist is not a good flavor of Dean. I can’t say I really blame him and totally understand where his current attitude is coming from, but I just hate seeing him this way. And while I’m glad that Bobby tried to reach him and talk some sense into him, I’m saddened that somewhere along the line the people who care about Dean somehow decided that when he’s really depressed and hurting, yelling at him or beating him up is the way to go.
And the baby is hungry and crying, so that’s my cue to toss out some random odds and ends before it’s feeding time again. My little Leviathan is hungry!
Odds and Ends
The family bonding moment between Bobby and the boys about how Bobby taught them to track was excellent. We don’t get to see or hear about many happy childhood memories for Sam and Dean, and it was clear that they cherished that time with Bobby.
I have a good friend who grew up in New Jersey, and the Jersey Devil is a huge urban legend there. Huge! The National Hockey League team The New Jersey Devils is named after the legend.
Anyone beside me want to hang out with stoned Dean? He was all kinds of awesome.
There were so many amazing moments of Edlund diallogue tonight, but since I’m in love with all things Muppets and Sesame Street, I have to go with the Big Bird and Snuffleupagus references. Ranger Rick was a close second, though. I used to love that magazine when I was a kid.
Most badass moment of the episode goes to Bobby for his blind shot into the trees to take down that Turducken zombie. Zomducken?
It might be because I have the potty mind of a teenage boy, but I laughed at all the Dick jokes tonight. Seriously, “Dick is coming” and “The rise of Dick”? Excellent misuse of a character’s name to get some juvenile humor past the censors.
All right, I really should be going now. What did we all think of the episode? I enjoyed it very much, I have to say. Ben Edlund delivers again, and very well directed by the always fantastic Guy Norman Bee. Now we just have to wait two weeks to find out what happens to Bobby. Too long! Too long!
Assuming that Bobby lives through all of this (and I’m going to assume that he will because thinking otherwise is a little too much to bear), this episode was excellent.
Stoned!Dean was hilarious. More please. I also loved Bobby’s talk with Sam. “You always were one deep little sonvabitch.” Bwah! Bobby’s shot into the trees was golden as well.
Two weeks is far too long to wait to find out what happens. Argh!
I don’t think I’ll be able to handle it if Bobby dies…while it would be the most daring thing the show could do I honestly hope they don’t. I avoid all spoilers so I don’t even know what to guess in regards to Bobby. Ugh. Edlund. Also-two weeks to wait to find out! No! At least there’s the holiday next week to distract me.
This was a wonderful episode though! Some really, really great moments (shouldn’t seen the Bobby thing coming with the reminiscing about hunting, and the line he made to Dean about dying). I also adored the Ranger Rick magazine when I was a kid and I laughed so hard at that moment. Also it was so nice to see Jensen come out of his emo!Dean to play the high!Dean. LOL. It was reminiscent of Yellow Fever and it’s nice to see Jensen get to do something other than angst and growl and scowl (all things I love, but sometimes it’s nice to see some levity from him!).
Phew. Can’t wait for my iTunes download so I can rewatch it. Now…to “pray” for Bobby.
My Wishful Thinking Theory of the Week:
It would be a way for Cas to redeem himself, and we all know Cas will show up at some point, but I think that Bobby recovers thru his own strong will and the Levi hurting Bobby sets Dean on his right again course.
The Leviathan Master Plan:
I was really interested in the Leviathan up until this episode when I realized that the theme of the season is that the boys + Bobby are fighting evil corporate America. This is a political statement from the writers; therefore, I have lost all interest in the Levi story. The boys will win. That’s all I need to know.
The Dean Situation:
My initial reaction was the same as yours. Classy, Bobby, complimenting Sam and chewing Dean’s butt out. But this is Dean Winchester we are talking about, and Dean doesn’t do chick flick, so my feeling is that it probably was an appropriate way to talk to Dean. The only thing is, when was the last time (if ever) anyone gave Dean a positive statement about who he is, what he does, or if he’s even any good at hunting?
Odds and Ends:
I loved nonchalant, drugged up Dean. What a sweetheart.
I really liked Sam and Bobby’s talk. Jared’s strength as an actor is quiet and understated. I’d like to see more of that for Sam.
Excellent dialogue in this script, despite it being nothing more than a political statement from BE. I don’t like to see politics inserted into the series. It makes me think the writers really are out of ideas. It’s unusual to see political viewpoints in the sci-fi genre. In fact, I turned to the sci-fi a few years ago to get away from the politics in Hollywood movies. I liked the episode, but once the photoshopping showed up, it stopped the fast-paced action dead in its tracks for me. Sadly, I lost a lot of respect for BE tonight.
Do you post under the name snseries on the CW message board and Sheri on supernaturaltv.com? If you arent then someone is going around copying and pasting what you write on just about any comment section they can?!
Who’s a smug vegetarian right about now? That’s right, Tim is. No Leviathan induced case of the cannibal crazies here! And maybe Prince Harry is a SPN fan! Who knew?? I am so freaking glad that I hadn’t had any breakfast before watching it. At no stage is it nice to see a cats head being taken out of a person’s stomach.
Given the importance placed on the Bobby for the boys this year, I had an inkling that he was in danger (or more danger than usual), especially as the half-time episode is a Bobby-centric one. I’ll make a reasoned guess as to whether he’ll live or die (flicks a coin). Heads. Bobby will be fine! I wonder if they might call on Crowley here. He and Bobby have already shared a kiss….
Dear show, please to not be kicking John when he’s down. Guys already dead, enough already. Seriously, ‘dumped us on you’, ‘taught us everything about tracking we know’. Jeez, did John just dump Sam and Dean in the woods when they hit puberty and say ‘Now boys, you don’t get any supper until you being me home the head of a Wendigo’. A teeny, tiny scrap of positive acknowledgement about the guy and I swear, I’ll take back every negative thing I’ve said about season 7.
Dean you are one funny little critter when you are snot-stoned, and one ultra depressed little critter when you are not. The world does not want to commit suicide (and if it does, please let it do it before the next Twilight film comes out).
Sam, I lurve you. I lurve your strength and your attitude (though it’ll probably be exposed as a crock of shit in the second half of the season). It will be this quiet strength that will drag Dean back from the many brinks he’s teetering on at the moment (please, please, please). You have to see where Sam’s coming from though, at least he knows what’s wrong with him. There has to be a measure of peace in that.
Yep, I think this episode is one I’ll be able to rewatch. Thank you, baby Jesus.
Oh, and cos I likes you guys, pressie for you. Num num num.

And all of them guaranteed snot free. Don’t say I never give you guys anything.
Ardeospina, lovely to see you writing. Hope baby, and baby Momma and baby Dadda are all doing well.
Ditto to everything you said. A fellow John fan, vegetarian, and Twilight hater (although that’s hardly a narrow subset)…I’ve got my eyes on you, mister.
I was eating breakfast whil watching! Yicks
Nice to see you posting while baby is napping. I loooved this episode. But I swear if Bobby dies, I’m marching down to wherever Sera Gamble is and demanding a resurrection!
So many things about this episode were great. The return of the boys to Biggerson’s; bonding moments with Bobby; stoned Dean (my favourite by far); and Sam being “a deep little sob”; the muppets references; the “subtle” dick jokes…I could go on and on.
Thank you Ben Edlund, just don’t kill Bobby.
Stoned!Dean rocked! That aspect was really well done.
I’m hoping they don’t kill Bobby, but with early reports that the only thing that Sam and Dean will have left is themselves, I’m nervous. I do think it is possible that Bobby will live, but be brain damaged or physically incapacitated again for a while so that Sam and Dean are on their own, but Bobby can still come back.
I am becoming less and less confident that Sam’s issues with Hell, or anything other than Dean, will ever be dealt with, at least this season. I really get the feeling that for the foreseeable future Sam will cope with no problem. I hope that when/if Dean deals with his issues then at some point Sam’s will come front and center, but honestly, the writes have shown no interest in Sam.
I saw a comment on another site that the problem with Bobby’s proposed death is that it’s unsurprising either way. I think that’s true. If he dies, eh, just another in a long line. If he lives, great, another near miss. It so obviously has no connection to the main plot (unless Dean sells his soul AGAIN) that it just feels manipulative on their part.
As to Sam’s issues, I get the same feeling as you. At this point, when he’s managed to breeze past Hell so easily, I can’t really bring myself to care about anything happening to this character. Last week’s episode is a prime example. People were outraged that rape was being trivialized. Me? I felt like if this character thought 180 years of hell was freeing, he probably thinks this abduction is a day at the spa, a nice break from all the traipsing around. They’ve made Sam so “zen” that I can’t believably care about anything happening to him anymore because it doesn’t seem like he cares about anything happening to himself anymore.
All that was a roundabout way of saying if (heavy stress on the if) and when they reintroduce the hell storyline, I’m not sure I’ll care. And I can’t see any future storyline for him that won’t fall victim to the ‘well, if he could get past hell…” logic. So, I don’t see an emotional storyline for Sam ever till the end of this show.

Exactly.but at this point even if they do something it wont make sense because of the fact he has been made to look too alright. Even in this review it is Dean that causes the concern and how it would kill Dean to lose Bobby.Regardless of what he goes through it wont matter has much has Deans issues or connections. It has left Sam in a no win situation.
Its not that I wont care about Sam’s issues, because I love Sam he’s my favourite character on the show by far. Its just that after so many episodes of him being fine without any explanation as to why I cant see it being realistic or conceivable if and when he is suddenly not ok. What could possibly happen to him to make him suddenly not be able to deal any more? He’s just coping too well. By the time the writers get around to trying to tell Sam’s story no one will believe that he could suddenly go from OK to a mess having not seen anything to the contrary sense the second episode of the season. I also think a lot of fans wont care by then either.
For me this another story the writers have well and truly cocked up, Sam girls have been absolutely screwed over this season well I think so anyway. I just don’t see a future for Sam on the show any more.
I’m left wondering if with Jared’s impending fatherhood is it not time for him to move on to greener pastures I’m sure there are plenty of shows who would love to have him and he could be with Gen and the baby in LA where their home is.
No, no no no no….no doubt I will think of other things later, but for now…no no no no. Bobby must not die/be turned into a monster/ghost or anything else. No no no.
Welcome back Ardeospina, even if it is only for this week. 🙂
Two fudging weeks. BOBBY!!!!!!! 🙁
Bobby closing his eyes and just listening to the monster as he climbed thru the branches. Then BOOM no more monster. Bobby is too cool.
Two fudging weeks.
Stoned!Dean was sexy. Almost as sexy as sniper!Dean. Speaking of which, the three of them walking thru the woods with the rifles…am I the only one who thought that was sexy? I am a sick puppy. 😆
Two fudging weeks.
I can see Bobby taking John under his wing and teaching John all he knew (thanks to Rufus). Then John trusting Bobby enough to leave his boys with him. ‘Uncle Bobby’ indeed.
Two fudging weeks.
Crowley needs to fix Bobby. 😐

My thoughts exactly!!!! I LOVE Bobby…he CAN’T die…it would kill me! (and Dean)
