Open Discussion: What About Supernatural Makes You Happy?
You know, there’s been a lot of bitterness around here lately. I of course am not saying that the arguments aren’t valid, but you know what, I need some cheer today. So, I’m starting another open discussion. It’s time to turn that frown upside down. What about “Supernatural†makes you happy?
Here’s my happy thought for today. It’s 3:00, its beautiful outside, and I’m sitting in a freaking cubicle. My humiliating indoor space of confinement where my significance is less than the balls of lint sitting with me. So, I go to my happy place. Two gorgeous men, a beautiful classic car, and the wind blowing through their luscious heads of hair on the open road. Ah…

I love Bacon cheese burgers, classic rock and classic cars. Every episode is a new adventure, its one of the few shows me and my wife can enjoy & watch together.
This really should have been titled ‘What About Supernatural DOESN’T Make You Happy’ because then my response would have been a lot shorter.
The writing, for one, I think makes the series. Perfect one liners, mixed with brilliant storytelling and great dramatic monologues round the show out perfectly.
Jared and Jensen and the chemisty they have together make the brothers so much more relatable. J2 makes me happy.
The lighting – I know right? I LOVE THE LIGHTING CREW ON THIS SHOW. They know exactly how to accent a scene or a shot to add the extra ‘umph’. I find in some scenes the lighting alone brings me to tears.
Sera/Singer episodes 🙂 Any eppi written by Sera Gamble and directed by Robert Singer makes me happy. I know it will be perfect. Bar that, A Ben/Phil will be just as awesome (Ghostfacers, anyone?)
But, most importantly, What makes me happy about Supernatural, is the people I have found because of the show. My best friends in the world (literally, around the world) are people I met through fan sites and Facebook Groups related to the show. I Love my WinSisters more than life itself. I know when I’m having a bad day (be it show-related or otherwise) I can find at least one of them online and we can ‘talk shop’ (as I call it) for hours. Nothing makes me happier than talking about Supernatural.

I’m only going to name a few because if I try to list everything I’ll be here all night. Here are some things about Supernatural that make me happy: Dean’s love affair with food (I think of him whenever I eat a sandwich now), the way Sam and Dean have grown as characters over the course of 5 seasons, Castiel, struggle, redemption, the way the show can make me laugh one moment and break my heart the next, this list could go on and on. Mostly, the fact that I’m part of this amazing fandom for this amazing show. I feel lucky.
I really really needed this open discussion today. So i am going to give you a list of my happy things tomorrow,, but here is the most important two. Please hang in there with me and you will understand why:
First Than Eric Kripke came up with such a Kick Ass idea and hung in there with it until someone took a chance on it and it became SUPERNATURAL.
Second: Besides all of the obvious reasons It makes me happy that i love a show about family and the importance of that connection and hanging on to it no matter what even when it can get ugly and you think there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Then oh my god there is and you see it all is right with the world(or at least your family). But what really makes me happy is that the star s of this show are just plain good people who enjoy what they do in making the show and really understand how much joy it gives us as fans. They arent on the cover of magazines being in fights or showing their ass order any of 100 other things. That is why the show makes me happy and i am proud to be totally in love and obsessed wtih this show.
And really i cannot leave with out saying of course

2. the music ( i never really listened to classic rock before it was always country but i am a convert as you always need a little rock and roll in your life)

Everything about Supernatural makes me happy. It is my life line when things in the real world are beyond crazy – you can count on Supernatural to (a) make you laugh (b) make you drool (c) put things in perspective – I mean, a bad day at work doesn’t seem so terrible after a little death, destruction and demons, does it?
Jensen’s face, Jared’s body, Misha’s Misha, the Impala, the music.
The fact that I turned my mom onto it and now we have ludicrous Sam (her) vs. Dean (me) bickers.
The fact that I can quote every line in My Bloody Valentine because I’ve watched it so much.
The fact that I got offended when they didn’t use Bad Moon Rising in the last episode of the first season when they were playing it in a marathon on some other channel when before this show I had no idea who CCR was.
Along the same lines, the fact that I watched the pilot of Veronica Mars (the CW’s king of cancellation mistakes) and they used Don’t Fear the Reaper and I said, “What’s a Supernatural song doing in here?”
The image of all the writers sitting in a dank conference room with laptops all turned to scripped.com arguing about the Apocalypse, which is what I think of which is what I think of when someone says “Supernatural writers.”
The moments of stunning direction that could make even the least tv- or film-savvy person go “wow.”
The fact that I now find a guy with a brother the most attractive thing ever.
How Sam and Dean adore each other.
How Jensen and Jared adore each other.
The fact that the fandom is offended when Supernatural doesn’t get a (well-deserved) Emmy nomination when everyone knows the Emmys are crap anyway.
Colin Ford and the inconsistent lil Dean actors.
Thinking that they don’t need to have Sam and Dean cleaning guns or packing bags in the background of any scene because we’re all staring at their faces in rapture anyway.

I also love everything about the show and that it has brought together a group of kindred spirits in the way it has.

How do I love the show? Let me count the ways.
I love its depth, fantastic acting, Jared’s beauty and height,
It reaches my soul, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Courage and Love and Grace.
I love it to the level of everyday’s
Need for smiles, fun, Jensen’s green eyes’ light,
I love its stories, as brothers in the Impala strive for Right;
I love its humanity, so often target for Praise.
I love it with a passion put to use
In writing, discussing, finding new friends.

With compassion and support that borders transcends.

This thread is what I need, some happiness about the show!
I love the writers, the directors, the actors, the producers, the set designers, the prop masters, the costumer and makeup artists, the musical scores and the classic rock.
I love the scares, the tears, the laughs, the missteps and the successes. When the show goofs up, at least I know they tried something. When it’s successful, it’s often because of happy accidents and lessons learned along the way.
I love that Eric Kripke initially had an idea of a reporter driving around following urban legends and the studio said, uh, no; what else you got and on the fly he said, two guys in a car…they’re brothers…yeah.
I love that they tried this huge epic storyline and that now that the show has a sixth season Eric said let’s let some others with a different and fresher take on the idea take it into its new direction.
I love that Bobby is alive and Castiel is back. I love the spoilers I’m reading…each and every eensy teensy one about what characters are going to populate the new season in some fashion or another.
I love the angels and the demons, the werewolves and vampires, the shapeshifters and the ghosts.
I’m looking forward to more Bobby characterization in Season 6 to build upon what we’ve already gotten as well as whether or not Cas is a ‘sheriff’ in heaven or not.
I love that I have four seasons of ‘official’ DVDs and that in eight weeks I’ll have five.
I love that Friday nights at 9:00 p.m. are going to be me and a bowl of popcorn and my TV.
I love that so many are speaking up and loving the show.

1. The bromance!!! It’s not just a MOTW show, it has a deeper story, the story of Sam and Dean!
2. The sense of humour! I love the funny moments, the funny episodes, I love -and missed- watching Sam and Dean laughing!
*wish:bring back the “bitch-jerk” moments, please!*
3. The beautiful friendship between Jared and Jensen in real life! I think that this is one of the main -if not THE MAIN- factors that the show is so successful! At least as far as I’m concerned, when I discovered how close Jared and Jensen were in real life I loved the show even more!
4. Bobby! I love me some Bobby! 😀
5. The Impala, the music (especially when I listen to “Carry On My Wayward Son” I can’t think of anything else but Supernatural!) and everything else that has to do with the show!
I love how I can go through the Photo gallery, look at a particular episode and instantly either crack a smile or bust into tears. Yep, I’m that emotionally connected. I love my show.

Reading through all your comments I can only agree about what makes me happy about Supernatural!!! It’s the whole package – cast and crew and this fandom here. And most of all, how the Winchester tale gives comfort and laughter to my life (despite of the angsty and bloody stuff).

What Makes Me Happy About Supernatural:
1. Finally! A show that can compete with the greats; Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse and Firefly.. (Yes I do believe Joss Whedon is a GOD and has gotten a bad deal every time, because people can’t strain themselves to think very much. Maybe Joss should play God! That would rock.. ok enough sidenotes lol.)
2. Writing is spectacular!
3. Jensen, Jensen, Jensen! Cass, Cass, Cass! 😉
4. Mostly, I just love how even though they go through all of this bad together – they find that they can count on each other! It is a great message.. Even when God has (supposedly) turned his back on them and they keep going.. most would give up but they are truly heroic.
5. No matter how low down or depressing it gets.. they never give up! On each other or humanity..
6. The importance of family – not just Sam & Dean but Bobby and Cass too.. They have all banded together and decided that through thick and thin they will do anything to try and save the innocent people out there.. who don’t deserve to die over a giant pissing contest.
7. Lastly, and most important the message of FREE WILL.. even with angels and demons in the picture these guys are fighting for the right to decide for themselves.. who’s to say if they will choose right or wrong – the point is that they get to choose!
– This is one thing that bothers me personally about all of the organized religions out there.. people lose their right to choose – for fear of eternal damnation and the church’s disapproval
Now I’m not saying that certain things should be overlooked (murder, stealing etc..) I’m just saying that I think God (in the show and in real life) wants us to choose what’s right.. I think that is how we save ourselves and I think that is what God wants.. not to force ‘goodness’ on us, but to bring it out in us.. in even the worst of times.. I think this is why God hasn’t intervened yet.. He wants to show the angels what true HUMANITY is..
