Route 666:
On every road there’s a bump or two…still like in Bugs there are gems to be mined here, one of my favorite scenes is when Sam discovers a little bit about his brother that genuinely surprised him and saddened him, for Dean’s sake:
DEAN: It’s more than that. They all seem connected to Cassie and her family.
SAM: Alright, well, you work with that angle. Go talk to her.
DEAN: Yeah, I will.
SAM: Oh, and you might also want to mention that other thing. (They stop at the car.)
DEAN: What other thing?
SAM: The serious unfinished business. Dean, what is going on between you two?
DEAN: Alright, so maybe we were a little bit more involved than I said.
SAM: Oh, ok. Yeah.
DEAN: Okay, a lot more. Maybe. (SAM laughs.) And I told her the secret about what we do, and I shouldn’t have.
SAM: No, look, man, everybody’s gotta open up to someone, sometime.
DEAN: Yeah, I don’t. It was stupid to get that close, and look how it ended. (SAM smiles and stares at him.) Would you stop? (SAM continues to stare.) Blink or something.
SAM: (stunned) You loved her.
DEAN: Oh, God. (He starts to open the door.)
SAM: You were in love with her, but you dumped her. (DEAD looks at him and shakes his head.) Oh, wow. She dumped you.
DEAN: Get in the car. (SAM doesn’t move.) Get in the car! (SAM still looks shocked.)

Nightmare:
Fresh from their success of Faith, Sera Gamble and Raelle Tucker give us another powerful outing, this one I chose as ‘the’ pivotal episode of Season 1 and the scene that springs to mind here is reminiscent of what Supernatural is all about:
SAM: Actually, there’s, uh, somethin’ else, too.
DEAN: Oh, jeez, what?
SAM: When Max locked me in that closet, that big cabinet against the door – I moved it. (DEAN laughs.)
DEAN: You’ve got a little bit more upper body strength than I give you credit for.
SAM: No, man, I moved it…like Max.
DEAN: Oh. Right.
SAM: Yeah. (DEAN grabs a spoon and holds it up.)
DEAN: Bend this.
SAM: I can’t turn it on and off, Dean.
DEAN: Well, how’d you do it?
SAM: I don’t know, I can’t control it. I saw you die, and it just came out of me, like a punch. You know, like a freak adrenaline thing. (DEAN puts the spoon down.)
DEAN: Well, I’m sure it won’t happen again.
SAM: Yeah, maybe. Aren’t you worried, man, aren’t you worried that I could turn into Max or something?
DEAN: Nope. No way. You know why?
SAM: No. Why?
DEAN: ‘Cause you’ve got one advantage that Max didn’t have.
SAM: Dad? Because Dad’s not here, Dean.
DEAN: No. Me. (He smiles.) As long as I’m around, nothing bad is gonna happen to you.

The Benders:
Because demons we get, humans are crazy we have to have an episode like The Benders. Also, this is the episode that introduces us to the first of many strong female authority figures, Deputy Hudak; followed by Detective Diana Ballard, Public Defender Mara Daniels and Sheriff Jodie Mills – anyone of them I’d love to see return. It’s a twisted episode filled with sick jokes and sicker sets but in the end the heart and soul of Supernatural is the relationship of Sam and Dean:
KATHLEEN: So, what can we do for you, Officer Washington?
DEAN: I’m working a missing persons.
KATHLEEN: I didn’t know the Jenkins case was being covered by the state police.
DEAN: Oh, no. No, there’s someone else. Actually, it’s my cousin. We were havin’ a few last night at this bar down by the highway. And I haven’t seen him since.
KATHLEEN: Does your cousin have a drinking problem?
DEAN: Sam? Two beers and he’s doin’ karaoke. (KATHLEEN smiles.) No, he wasn’t drunk. He was taken. (KATHLEEN nods and sits down at her computer. DEAN follows her and sits also.)
KATHLEEN: Alright. What’s his name?
DEAN: Winchester. Sam Winchester.
KATHLEEN: Like the rifle?
DEAN: Like the rifle. (KATHLEEN types SAM’s name in the computer and brings up his police record. She observes the page, then clicks on DEAN’s link and brings up his record.)
KATHLEEN: Samuel Winchester. So, you know that his brother, Dean Winchester, died in St. Louis. And, uh, was suspected of murder. (DEAN tries to look nonchalant.)
DEAN: Yeah, Dean. Kind of the black sheep of the family. Handsome, though.
KATHLEEN: Uh-huh. (She types something else and brings up more search results on the computer.) Well, he’s not showing up in any current field reports.
DEAN: Oh, I already have a lead. I saw a surveillance camera by the highway.
KATHLEEN: Uh-huh. The county traffic cam?
DEAN: Right. Yeah. I’m thinking the camera picked up whatever took him. Or, whoever.
KATHLEEN: Well, I have access to the traffic cam footage down at the county works department, but—well, anyhow, let’s do this the right way. (She stands up and gets some paperwork from a filing cabinet.) Why don’t you fill out a missing persons report and sit tight over here? (She hands him a clipboard.)
DEAN: Officer, look, uh, he’s family. I kind of—I kind of look out for the kid. You gotta let me go with you.
KATHLEEN: I’m sorry, I can’t do that.
DEAN: Well, tell me something. Your county has its fair share of missing persons. Any of ’em come back? (KATHLEEN looks sad.) Sam’s my responsibility. And he’s comin’ back. I’m bringin’ him back. (She stares at him.)

Shadow:
To round out the second third of this look at Season 1 we get the episode that finally reunites the Winchester men. Sure, I could pick the scene where Sam and Dean meet up with John and everyone hugs…I love that scene. But there’s one that comes prior to that that always springs to mind when I think of this episode, it’s so truthful and yet so sorrowful and in light of the events of Swan Song it resonates even more with me:
DEAN: Big night.
SAM: Yeah. You nervous?
DEAN: No. Why, are you?
SAM: No. No way. (They are silent for a few seconds.) God, could you imagine if we actually found that damn thing? That demon?
DEAN: Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, all right?
SAM: I know. I’m just sayin’, what if we did? What if this whole thing was over tonight? Man, I’d sleep for a month. Go back to school—be a person again.
DEAN: You wanna go back to school?
SAM: Yeah, once we’re done huntin’ the thing.
DEAN: Huh.
SAM: Why, is there somethin’ wrong with that?
DEAN: No. No, it’s, uh, great. Good for you.
SAM: I mean, what are you gonna do when it’s all over?
DEAN: It’s never gonna be over. There’s gonna be others. There’s always gonna be somethin’ to hunt.
SAM: But there’s got to be somethin’ that you want for yourself.
DEAN: Yeah, I don’t want you to leave the second this thing’s over, Sam. (He walks over to the dresser.)
SAM: Dude, what’s your problem? (DEAN is silent for a while, then turns back to SAM.)
DEAN: Why do you think I drag you everywhere? Huh? I mean, why do you think I came and got you at Stanford in the first place?
SAM: ‘Cause Dad was in trouble. ‘Cause you wanted to find the thing that killed Mom.
DEAN: Yes, that, but it’s more than that, man. (He returns to the dresser and is silent again, then once more turns to Sam.) You and me and Dad—I mean, I want us….I want us to be together again. I want us to be a family again.
SAM: Dean, we are a family. I’d do anything for you. But things will never be the way they were before. (DEAN looks heartbroken.)
DEAN: (sadly) Could be.
SAM: I don’t want them to be. I’m not gonna live this life forever. Dean, when this is all over, you’re gonna have to let me go my own way. (He and DEAN share a look.)

There you have it, part 2 of this series on Season 1, questions were posed, few were answered, more surprises between the brothers, some fighting, some separation, near death and a reunion with dad immediately followed by a separation. Meg is revealed as a danger stalking them all and there are only seven episodes to go before the season ends. The creative minds behind Supernatural had found their stride and while there were a few episodes that didn’t quite gel overall the pacing was good and what was to come was even better.
Coming soon, the final third of Season 1.
Thanks for reading, and a huge thank you again to Jenna and Alice for all the screencaps and the effort they’re putting behind this endeavor.
Elle2
So many in this third of the season that I love unconditionally.
Home – Dean’s desperate call to his dad. Sam seeing his mom for the first time. Finding out John WAS there the whole time. (Why did he never tell them? Tsk tsk John!)
Asylum – Sam shooting his brother broke my heart. Even knowing it was Ellicott’s influence, I was actually shocked at the brutal hurting words coming from him. And of course Dean closed up and refused to discuss it.
Faith – How I love this episode! Sam’s refusal to give up hope and his courage to try anything to save Dean. I really liked Roy LeGrange. I often wonder how he is doing nowadays (as if he is a real person). I felt so sorry for him.
Benders – For some reason I love this one too. Kathleen was great, and though it was Dean who found Sam it was Sam who ended up saving them all. I loved Dean’s smartass attitude with the Benders even though you could see the fear in his eyes. (how Jensen does this is beyond me).
Shadow – Dean hearing what Sam had said about him from Meg’s mouth and how it hurt him. Sam so ready to quit the hunt and go his own way leaving Dean alone again. And finding dad for such a short time. Poor boys!
Thanks again Elle2.
HI, Bevie,
There are so many awesome moments (especially in Home and in Shadow) that it was so hard to choose; again, I went for the one that struck my mind first so as to make it easier to leave the others out.
So glad you added your thoughts, especially the part in Shadow about how much it hurt Dean to hear from Meg words that Sam had said. Nothing like a demon to use your words against you to hurt your brother…bad demon!
Like you I wonder how Roy LeGrange is (yep, the character 🙂 as well as Missouri. I really liked Missouri, she was gentle with Sam who needed that gentleness but tough with Dean who also needed that toughness to keep him on the hunt and not on the emotions and she was tougher with John who really did need a kick in the butt — talk to your children, man!
Thanks for the comments.
Hi Elle2
With continuing with part 2, I had picked the same scenes as you for Faith, Route 666 and Nightmare.
As for Home I thought of Missouri and Sam on the front steps after Mary sacrificed herself to get rid of the poltergeist. I felt so sorry for Sam with his “What’s happening to me?â€
Asylum – Sam and Dean walking through the asylum the first time during the day. Dean being the wiseass that he is, comments on Sam’s premonitions. “Hey Sam who do you think is the hotter psychic Patricia Arquette, Jennifer Love-Hewitt or you?â€
Scarecrow – Dean on the phone to Sam telling him how proud he is of him. Sniff
The Benders – The end scene with The Sheriff Kathleen telling Sam and Dean to get going before the authorities come and they start walking back to town. Sam teasing Dean “So you got sideline by a 13 year old girl†“ Oh shut upâ€
Shadow – The reunion with their Dad.
Karen,
Home was hard for me because so many scenes popped into my mind on that one…I thought of just writing “the whole darn episode”.
Haley Joel…too funny.
Scarecrow, that phone call from Dean really gets to me as well. I like what was done there because it was a shot by Dean to let Sam ‘grow up’ and recognize him as his own person.
The Benders, in an episode with so little to be laughed at…gruesome stuff and all that…the fun at the end between the reunited brothers is always good.
Shadow…yeah, there is so much there, love the hug with Dean and John, Dean went so confidently to Dad never doubting there would be a hug and then Sam getting a shot at one too and some understanding from his father…sniffles.
o to part three to see what you’ve chosen there…so far we’re three out of three in each season
