The first eight episodes of Season 1 laid quite a bit of groundwork on the Winchester’s history and some conflicts: Sam with Dad, Dean with self-worth, Sam over Jess’ death and gave us some good old brotherly banter. The next eight episodes really found Supernatural’s creative forces finding their stride and while a couple of episodes could be deemed as clunkers overall it is a strong second portion to the very first season of Supernatural.
Here are the scenes that ‘leapt’ out at me as I jotted down the episode titles:
Home:
The emotional turning point for this series when the mystery deepened and questions were posed that remained unanswered for years. There are so many excellent scenes here but I chose one that is not talked about that often but is powerful and mysterious and holds clues to the psyche of a major character in this series, one who has been gone a long time yet is never far from the thoughts and actions of the Sam and Dean:
MISSOURI: That boy…he has such powerful abilities. But why he couldn’t sense his own father, I have no idea. [The camera pans over to her couch, where JOHN WINCHESTER is sitting.]
JOHN: Mary’s spirit — do you really think she saved the boys?
MISSOURI: I do. [JOHN nods sadly and twists his wedding ring on his finger.] John Winchester, I could just slap you. Why won’t you go talk to your children?
JOHN: [tearfully] I want to. You have no idea how much I wanna see ’em. But I can’t. Not yet. Not until I know the truth.
Asylum:
After the emotions of Home the brothers’ relationship is starting to crack a bit in their fears over John’s safety, Sam dares to suggest their father may be dead which leads to an immediate reaction from Dean; as if sensing the issue at hand John handily sends them a text message with coordinates; a new job. Asylum is a good old monster of the week story but there is plenty of brotherly angst to mine – and any good fan has some scenes in particular memorized. I used this particular scene in a little post I did on another fan site after Sex and Violence aired in Season 4. So much was made over the brothers fighting and how Kripke was destroying them yet it wasn’t the first time we’d seen the brothers at odds, especially when external forces were at work:
SAM: Dean. [DEAN turns to look at him, confused. SAM’S nose begins to bleed.] Step back from the door. [DEAN stands up.]
DEAN: Sam, put the gun down.
SAM: Is that an order?
DEAN: No, it’s more of a friendly request.
SAM: [aiming the shotgun at DEAN] ‘Cause I’m gettin’ pretty tired of takin’ your orders.
DEAN: I knew it. Ellicott did somethin’ to you, didn’t he?
SAM: For once in your life, just shut your mouth.
DEAN: What are you gonna do, Sam? The gun’s filled with rock salt. Not gonna kill me. [Suddenly, SAM shoots DEAN in the chest, sending him crashing through the wall.]
SAM: No. But it’ll hurt like hell.
DEAN: Sam! We gotta burn Ellicott’s bones, and all this’ll be over. You’ll be back to normal.
SAM: I am normal. I’m just tellin’ the truth for the first time. I mean, why are we even here? Because you’re following Dad’s orders like a good little soldier? ‘Cause you always do what he says without question? Are you that desperate for his approval?
DEAN: This isn’t you talking, Sam.
SAM: That’s the difference between you and me. I have a mind of my own. I’m not pathetic like you.
DEAN: So what are you gonna do, huh? You gonna kill me?
SAM: You know what? I am sick of doing what you tell me to do. We’re no closer to finding Dad today than we were six months ago.
DEAN: Well, then, here. Let me make it easier for you. [He takes a pistol out of his jeans pocket and hands it to SAM.] Go on. Take it. Real bullets are gonna work a hell of a lot better than rock salt. Take it! [SAM takes the gun from him and drops the shotgun on the floor. He points the gun directly at DEAN.] You hate me that much? You think you could kill your own brother? Then go ahead. Pull the trigger. [SAM waits, finger on the trigger.] Do it! [SAM pulls the trigger, but nothing happens. He tries again and again, but nothing happens. While SAM is distracted by this, DEAN grabs him and throws him to the ground. He stands, in pain.] Man, I’m not gonna give you a loaded pistol. [He knocks SAM out.] Sorry, Sammy.
Scarecrow:
Emotions are high and the desire for direct action to find dad is higher, especially after an actual voice-to-voice phone call in which Sam is determined to have John tell them where he is and get actual answers while Dean willingly falls into line like a good soldier. Things get worse from here as Sam uses his mind to strike out on his own in search of John and Dean remains the ‘good’ son and continues on to the hunt. Sam and Dean are separated a lot during this episode but they remain in constant contact with Sam assisting Dean on the hunt and Dean sharing and caring in true chick/flick fashion. It’s the scene at the end that really nails it for me and carries a sentiment that is echoed several times in Season 5:
SAM: Think she’s gonna be alright?
DEAN: I hope so.
SAM: And the rest of the townspeople, they’ll just get away with it?
DEAN: Well, what’ll happen to the town will have to be punishment enough. (They start walking to DEAN’s car.) So, can I drop you off somewhere?
SAM: No, I think you’re stuck with me. (They stop at the car.)
DEAN: What made you change your mind?
SAM: I didn’t. I still wanna find Dad. And you’re still a pain in the ass. (DEAN nods.) But, Jess and Mom—they’re both gone. Dad is God knows where. You and me. We’re all that’s left. So, if we’re gonna see this through, we’re gonna do it together. (DEAN pauses.)
DEAN: Hold me, Sam. That was beautiful. (He puts his hand on SAM’s shoulder, who hits it away. They laugh.)
SAM: You should be kissing my ass, you were dead meat, dude.
DEAN: Yeah, right. I had a plan, I’d have gotten out.
SAM: Right. (They smile and get in the car.)
Faith:
Sera Gamble and Raelle Tucker wrote this episode which at the time I doubt anyone imagined the scene here and words spoken here would come to have the significance they have had; I’m sure no one thought they’d get past Season 1 much less get to the arrival of angels and missions from God in Season 4. Whenever I think of this episode it is this powerful scene where a vulnerable Dean asks a good, honest man who truly had a gift – just not the gift he thought he had – a question that like many other questions in Supernatural took quite a long time to be answered but when it was, wow:
DEAN: Can I ask you one last question?
ROY: Of course you can.
DEAN: Why? Why me? Out of all the sick people, why save me?
ROY: Well, like I said before, the Lord guides me. I looked into your heart, and you just stood out from all the rest.
DEAN: What did you see in my heart?
ROY: A young man with an important purpose. A job to do. And it isn’t finished. (DEAN looks slightly surprised.)

So many in this third of the season that I love unconditionally.
Home – Dean’s desperate call to his dad. Sam seeing his mom for the first time. Finding out John WAS there the whole time. (Why did he never tell them? Tsk tsk John!)
Asylum – Sam shooting his brother broke my heart. Even knowing it was Ellicott’s influence, I was actually shocked at the brutal hurting words coming from him. And of course Dean closed up and refused to discuss it.
Faith – How I love this episode! Sam’s refusal to give up hope and his courage to try anything to save Dean. I really liked Roy LeGrange. I often wonder how he is doing nowadays (as if he is a real person). I felt so sorry for him.
Benders – For some reason I love this one too. Kathleen was great, and though it was Dean who found Sam it was Sam who ended up saving them all. I loved Dean’s smartass attitude with the Benders even though you could see the fear in his eyes. (how Jensen does this is beyond me).
Shadow – Dean hearing what Sam had said about him from Meg’s mouth and how it hurt him. Sam so ready to quit the hunt and go his own way leaving Dean alone again. And finding dad for such a short time. Poor boys!

There are so many awesome moments (especially in Home and in Shadow) that it was so hard to choose; again, I went for the one that struck my mind first so as to make it easier to leave the others out.
So glad you added your thoughts, especially the part in Shadow about how much it hurt Dean to hear from Meg words that Sam had said. Nothing like a demon to use your words against you to hurt your brother…bad demon!
Like you I wonder how Roy LeGrange is (yep, the character 🙂 as well as Missouri. I really liked Missouri, she was gentle with Sam who needed that gentleness but tough with Dean who also needed that toughness to keep him on the hunt and not on the emotions and she was tougher with John who really did need a kick in the butt — talk to your children, man!

With continuing with part 2, I had picked the same scenes as you for Faith, Route 666 and Nightmare.
As for Home I thought of Missouri and Sam on the front steps after Mary sacrificed herself to get rid of the poltergeist. I felt so sorry for Sam with his “What’s happening to me?â€
Asylum – Sam and Dean walking through the asylum the first time during the day. Dean being the wiseass that he is, comments on Sam’s premonitions. “Hey Sam who do you think is the hotter psychic Patricia Arquette, Jennifer Love-Hewitt or you?â€
Scarecrow – Dean on the phone to Sam telling him how proud he is of him. Sniff
The Benders – The end scene with The Sheriff Kathleen telling Sam and Dean to get going before the authorities come and they start walking back to town. Sam teasing Dean “So you got sideline by a 13 year old girl†“ Oh shut upâ€
Shadow – The reunion with their Dad.

Home was hard for me because so many scenes popped into my mind on that one…I thought of just writing “the whole darn episode”.
Haley Joel…too funny.
Scarecrow, that phone call from Dean really gets to me as well. I like what was done there because it was a shot by Dean to let Sam ‘grow up’ and recognize him as his own person.
The Benders, in an episode with so little to be laughed at…gruesome stuff and all that…the fun at the end between the reunited brothers is always good.
Shadow…yeah, there is so much there, love the hug with Dean and John, Dean went so confidently to Dad never doubting there would be a hug and then Sam getting a shot at one too and some understanding from his father…sniffles.
