The Season Five Enigma of Sam Winchester’s Hair
When I did The Enigma of Sam Winchester’s Hair last year, I highlighted some of the key disasters from seasons 1-4. In going back and analyzing season five, I found Sam’s hair was pretty even keeled for the most part, but there were some unusual circumstances that happened to come up more than once. So I’m switching it up a bit.Â
For season five, I bring to you the differing yet perplexing styles of Sam’s hair by category.  Sure, a lot of these hair circumstances stemmed from misfortune, but this is Sam Winchester we’re talking about.  Let the games begin… Â

Oh yeah, Sam had some issues with losing it. Whether it be by fits of rage, falling into an intense hunger for demon blood because of a spell or just plain taking out demons, he lost control quite a few times. When he did, his hair lost it right along with him.Â

This might really be shallow, I know, but I love Sam’s hair pretty much all the time. Favourite hairstyles are, no doubt, ‘I’ve been maimed or murdered’ hair and the way he wears it as Lucifer… sexy as hell, indeed.
This is a great article to take with me in my mind on my vacation and dream of Sam’s hair and the guy in general…

I really enjoyed your article about Sam’s S1-4 hair, and this is a great continuation! It’s good to know I’m not the only one with an obsession for Sam’s hair. And I’m with Julie, I hope all those pleas for a haircut continue to fall on deaf ears. I actually liked Sam’s hair better this past season than I did in S4. Here’s hoping that hair will continue to amaze us in S6! 😀

Sam does have some locks on him and you’re correct, he does make for a pretty corpse (sorry, Sam)
There is a thread running on another fansite and it is all about whether Sam will get a hair cut or not, pretty funny. I commented that I hope he gets a cut, not as short as Dean’s but just a bit more manageable and perhaps it will help place him in the ‘leadership’ role more. Don’t shoot me or ban me from the site for suggesting such a thing as a trim but there some moments there when I thought…sheesh dude, get a trim — I think you manged to capture them all!
Love the addition of Sam/KITT in the new category of Sam in his alternate forms.

Great article, Alice! It’s such fun to take a lighter spin on a season like this one – and boy, Jared’s hair is as versatile an actor as Jared himself! Can’t wait to see what season 6 will bring – fringe bangs? Pink hilights? Spiked?

Hmmm, one of my favorite subjects. 😀
I love his hair all the time, but personally I like it best the way it looked in the beginning of the season. Just the right length, not too long, not too short, adorably curling at the back of his head. It looks particularly fine in Free To Be You and Me and The End (as Lucifer). *Sigh*
I repeat here what I already said before. There are 3 things I hope I’ll never see in Supernatural:
1) Sam with short hair
2) Dean not calling Sam “Sammy” anymore
3) A love triangle
Any of these would be the end of the world, this time for real.
@AndreaW I second your choices and especially the second one!!! And my favourite “Sammy” is when Dean is worried about him!!! For me it’s one of the (many) signs of how much he cares about his little brother!!!
Yes, long live the “Sammy”! I just LOVE it. I find it so sweet that despite Sam’s impossible height and size, he still is and (I expect)will always be Dean’s Sammy. Also, how Sam won’t allow anyone else but Dean to call him Sammy. 🙂

I will second (or third, or fourth) the long live the “Sammy”! My younger brother is a good 8 inches taller than me & a father twice over, but it is almost impossible to say his name without placing that “y” at the end of it, as he was known when we were kids.
Nooo! They musn’t let him cut it, that would be sacrilige! The whole floppy unmanagable fringe thing sort of defines the boy …

I have to say my favarites Sam’s hair moments are the one that comes with the bitchface and the “This crazy bitch is bothering me”. He just looks totally HOT and AWESOME in those moments. But I personally love Sammy’s hair all the time, it just fits perfectly with him.
And, yeah, I totally love the “Sammy”. It’s so sweet. And I love the fact that Sam only allows Dean to call him like that and that proves how much they love each other. I think it’s awesome when Dean calls Sam like that because you can feel that when he does that he has such a lot of love on his voice. It’s a really nice detail because it’s a sign of the TOTALLY close relashionship they share and at the end, that is the only thing this show has always been about ( As Sera Gamble said once:The Epic Love Story of Sam and Dean) 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

I have to admit I loved Sam’s hair this season and hope he keeps it at this length through out season 6 (guess it’s the hippie in me).

This is fun Alice – chuckling through my whole read of the article. My favorite Sam hair is the Maimed or Murdered hair. He looked so pretty in those scenes especially with Dark Side of the Moon when he flopped back on the bed after being killed. His hair just moved so perfectly – it should get an Emmy for that performance. 😆 Also loved the floppiness of his hair in Abandon all Hope when the building blows up and Sam and Dean are startled and look back. Another great performance by Sam’s hair.
I have to add my two cents to the other comments about Dean calling Sam, “Sammy”. Love it when he does it. Agree with Holmes where said there is a lot of love when Dean says it. I especially pay attention when Dean calls him that, because the moments he does its a situation of concern and care. It’s his love pet name. But remember in the beginning, Sam didn’t want Dean calling him Sammy. He said Sammy was a 12-year-kid with pudgy cheeks. But then by Bloodlust Sam was saying only Dean was allowed to call him that – so I guess it grew on Sam as well. I also hate it when others call him Sammy, like Gordon did or Ruby. It just grates on my nerves. It’s a name for Dean and Dean alone.

And ‘Free To Be, You And Me’ hair all the time yes please! In that episode that was the best it ever looked. No matter what others say sam outgrew the bangs long ago.

The bangs were cute but the longer hair makes him more manly. 😉

I also think the best part of the article were your category titles. “I’m distressed and so is my hair” was a particular favorite.
Sam takes, ‘bad hair day’, to whole different level. But I sitll want it…Worked with a guy who had the most gorgeous eyebrows and eyelashes. Women would kill for them. God must be laughing his ass off somewhere…

Sam’s hair deserves a thesis to be defended in a university because until the end of SPN it is gonna be in the same realm of the Impala – a loved/hated/cut – whatever character of the show.

Hoping for the Season 6 one to come up soon, I can’t remember too well but I seem to remember it being much neater when he was Soulless Sam.
The S6 Enigma of Sam Winchester’s hair will be out in a day or two. It’s taken me a while to put on the finishing touches, but it’s almost done! The hotness/less mess factor definitely lies with soulless Sam.
