Castiel – The Angel Knows How to Make An Entrance
Sympathy For The Devil
Another “best entrance ever.†Cas only gets a few minutes in this one, but WOW! Dean is choking up blood from stage 4 lung cancer and Sam is on the floor dying because he has no lungs. Things look pretty dire for our heroes, right? One flash of golden light later, one bad ass angel in a trench coat is killing Zach’s two handlers. A bad ass angel that was exploded to smithereens by an archangel at the end of last season. Yep, he’s definitely had a rough few days and is on the edge. I won’t even go into the chills I get when he sternly orders Zachariah to “put these two back together.â€
Free To Be You and Me
Castiel’s stealth entrances get a little more impossible when he tagged Sam and Dean’s ribs with Enochian symbols, making it impossible for any angel or demon to find them. Sadly, that means Cas too. Luckily, Bobby is able to tell Cas where to find Dean this time. Dean, freshly parted from Sam, is cleaning off the blood from his jacket after his fresh vampire kill. Dean looks at himself in the mirror, looks down to the jacket, looks back and up and there’s Castiel! Needles to say, it startles him. Cas stays in real close, making Dean uncomfortable. “Cas we talked about this. Personal space.†Oops, Cas must have forgot.
The End
This rivals the greatness of “Lazarus Rising.†Dean has been sprung from his three day nightmare in the future, especially rattled over seeing that Lucifer was “wearing his brother to the prom.†Zachariah still has him though, but Dean still refuses to say yes even after seeing that bleak future. Zachariah really threatens harm and then boom, Dean’s gone. Cut to Dean on the street corner, and there’s Castiel with a slight smile. “We had an appointment.†Dean is so glad he kept it. He is also glad this isn’t the hippie Cas either that went mortal. “Don’t ever change.â€
Changing Channels
These are not personal best moments for the poor angel, but his sudden appearances really enhanced the wild pacing of this landmark episode. While Sam is reeling in agony over finding out the hard way what “Nutcracker†is all about, Castiel storms into the game show, finding out exactly why the Winchesters are missing. “Mistah Tricksta does not like pretty boy angels.†He’s gone before he can save Sam and Dean.
The second entrance is even better! Castiel walks right into the “Supernatural†sitcom, opening the motel room door abruptly to the canned cheers of the crowd. He this time at least gets to warn them that this thing is too powerful to be a Trickster before the man shows up and proves his power trumps a lower order angel. Oh, and he knows him too. Wow, this is getting interesting.
Abandon All Hope
Okay, again, not so much an entrance than a cool trick that adds to the mystique. Jo and Ellen arrive at their destination with Castiel sitting in the back seat. They get out, Cas doesn’t. Jo taps on the window, wondering if Castiel has ever heard of a door handle. Suddenly Castiel is behind her on the sidewalk. ”Of course I have.” Angels and their fun.
The Song Remains The Same
Anna arrives at the warehouse hoping to see Sam and Dean, but exploding light bulbs is the clue that someone else has come. She has a good idea of who’s behind her by the time the fireworks have stopped. One camera swipe later, Cas is right behind her where she suspected. He’s looking pretty glum too. I think it’s all that angel guilt.
My Bloody Valentine
Dean has mastered the summoning of Castiel by cell phone, and the joke from “The End†still holds true. There is irony in getting hold of God’s messenger on a cell phone. He calls, and before the conversation is even finished Cas is staring him down. “I’m there now.” “Yeah, I get that,” Dean replies right in front of him. “I’m going to hang up now.†Ha!
Honorable mention, and oh so funny, Castiel appearing in the passenger seat of the Impala while Dean is staking out the hospital. He arrives with a cheeseburger and a smile. “These make me so happy.” If you’re happy Cas, so are we.
99 Problems
Even when inebriated, Cas still knows how to surprise a Winchester. This time it’s Sam. Sam is alone in the room reading. The shot shows no one in the kitchen while Sam puts his book in his bag and grabs another one. When it moves back to the kitchen, guess who? He’s in a snippy mood though, telling Sam that he got his message but finds the sound of his voice grating. Sam asks if he’s drunk and at first denies, but then says yes when he’s staggering. I guess angels don’t make happy drunks.
Point of No Return
The hits keep on coming. This time, he’s playing henchman. Dean has run off with intentions of saying yes to Michael but Sam is a bit more clever than he thinks. Sam surprises him in the motel room but challenges baby brother to stop him. Sure, he may have gotten past his brother, but the stakes are high and Sam is smart enough to bring help. Enter one pissed off angel with those magic fingers.
Speaking of pissed off angel, Dean learns the hard way what happens when you trick one of these beings and then try to escape. Cas appears out of nowhere before Dean can succeed in reaching other angels and delivers one hell of a beating. Dean was right, don’t piss off the nerd angels.
Castiel is known for his exits too…
Lovely hommage to our favourite angel, Alice! I adore Castiel! Even though we were told that angels did not have feelings and that their existence was an empty one due to that (as Anna explained to Dean once) – that is clearly not true.
This angel feels, loves, fears, is in pain, desperate, dead-pan. He developped into a true brother in arms, he’s family now.
My favourite Castiel scene (I don’t know if that’s an entrance though it’s at the beginning of the episode TheEnd) is his phone chat with Dean and Dean stopping him in his tracks with his I-need-to-attend-to-human-stuff speech and Cas is left standing on the street.
‘The voice says I’m almost out of minutes’ and ‘Okay, I’ll just wait here then’ – I love that.
But – I love the scenes you picked, too! These entrances indeed do him justice, Alice, and what great gift to your friend Jenniffer!
Love Jas
Good article Alice. I’m sure Jennifer will love this to no end.
Cass has had some great one-liners in his episodes. Especially liked him in The End. And he does make entrances so well!
Thanks for sharing this!
Loved this! Cas is so cute
Well done Alice. Castiel definatly deserved this and it shows once more how special this show is. Not only are the characters done well but also the special effects to enhance everything.
This was really fun, Alice! I didn’t realize Cass had so many fun exits and entrances! Now what I’d really like is for him to re-enter the show. 😉
Thanks Alice! This was awesome – Cas has a very special place in my heart.
As for my favourite entrance – well, I’m reserving judgment until his NEXT entrance – because even if he drives in on a tricycle, it’ll be great because he’s ALIVE!! Of the ones we’ve seen so far – his intro followed in a close second by Death Takes a Holiday.
