100 Favorite Moments of Supernatural – Season One
Faith (1.12)
After almost dying, Dean has changed. The chinks in his armour become more and more visible, and the experience of searching of a dad who doesn’t want to be found is already leaving traces, The same holds true for Sam – he had just lost his girlfriend and almost lost his brother, not having any idea whether they were ever going to see John again. You need a stout heart to go on like this.
Route 666 (1.13)
We learn a bit more about Dean’s past and that he actually loved someone. I love the moment Sam confronts Dean about her in front of the mirror getting dressed up. Sam: I bet she kicked your ass a couple of times. What’s interesting is you guys never really look at each other at the same time. You look at her when she’s not looking, she checks you our when you look away. It’s just an interesting observation. In a, you know, observationally interesting way.
Nightmare (1.14)
With this episode the story arc gets into another direction. Sam has more visions. There are connections with other psychic kids, he finally gets it. The Winchesters try to help Max, but are too late to alter his actions or help him with his childhood trauma. Sam is unusually affected by the boy, as he sees a lot of himself there. Plus, his nighmares and headaches are increasing. As they investigate more on the matter, this favourite moment comes up – I couldn’t resist. Our warriors of light in a beautiful picture:
The Benders (1.15)
Dean: Demons I get. People are just crazy.
Shadow (1.16)
Finally, dad shows up. The story has evolved even more. Meg is something of a demon. Or a demon-serving-whore. Or a human hoping for a prize. We don’t know really, yet. But she sets up a trap and almost gets the brothers killed. And the shadow demons almost slice up dad, too. My fave minute here is Sam laying eyes on his father after a long time. Watching Dean and John embrace, not knowing what to do, just observing the scene with pain and trepidation, He won my heart once more, as he finally found a moment of peace in his father’s embrace, with Dean looking on.
Hell House (1.17)
Who you’re gonna call? Ghostfacers!! Introduction of the Facers, soon to become favourites on planet Supernatural. I will treat myself – and all the SamGals to another shallow moment, Sorry, everyone. These actors know how handsome they are. And sometimes they serve as eye candy to enhance a show that doesn’t need enhancement like that at all, but then again, we don’t mind (okay, okay, there are some gorgeous girls on this show for the male viewers, as well, I’ll try to find some,.)
Something Wicked (1.18)
Dean connects to little boy Michael and tells Sam a moving account of a childhood trauma – how he almost got Sam killed and that dad sent him there to finish the business. My heart went out to the strong, yet deeply vulnerable elder Winchester. There are not enough hugs in the world so cease that pain, I guess. And had we known then what we know now, how many would have gotten on some barricades already screaming: Go, Team Free Will!!
Provenance (1.19)
A creepy picture (does the same to me as kids and clowns – freaking me out, yes Sam and I probably do share some DNA). We are introduced to beautiful, smart and gutsy Sarah Blake, a girl Sam actually should have married.
Dead Man’s Blood (1.20)
Ah, vampires exist. They are almost extinct, though, but not this bunch we encounter here. John returns. Sam and his dad are at each others throats again in a minute. But they also have a heart-to-heart and Sam discovers that they are more alike than he thought – a notion we will learn to share with the further progression of the show. I love the quiet moment they have as they speak about what happened to John’s college fund for the boys.
Salvation (1.21)
What could I say about this episode? A perfect runner up to the worst cliff hanger ever. Moving in so many aspects. My favourite one is the confrontation of the brothers:
Sam: If you had just let me go in there, I could have ended all this.
Dean: Sam, the only thing you would have ended was your life.
Sam: You don’t know that.
Dean: So, what, you’re just willing to sacrifice yourself, is that it?
Sam: Yeah, yeah, you’re damn right I am.
Dean: yeah, well, that’s not gonna happen, not as long as I’m around.
Sam: What the hell are you talking about, Dean? We’ve been searching for this demon our whole lives. It’s the only thing we’ve ever cared about. (one of the saddest sentences ever)
Dean: Sam, I wanna waste it. I do, okay? But it’s not worth dyin’ over.
Sam: What?
Dean: I mean it. If huntin’ this demon means your getting’ yourself killed then I hope we never find the damn thing.
Sam: That thing killed Jess. That thing killed Mom.
Dean: You said yourself once – that no matter what we do, they’re gone. And they’re never comin’ back.
Sam: Don’t say that! Don’t you. Not after all this. Don’t you say that!
Dean: Sammy, look, the three of us, that’s all we have, And that’s all I have. Sometimes I feel like I’m barely holdin’ it together, man. Without you and dad…
Devil’s Trap (1.22)
A devastating episode in a long line of devastating episodes and more to come. I found it hard to pick THE favourite moment, as there are several. Bobby!!!!
Possessed John shoves an ugly truth in Dean’s face:
You know, you fight and you fight for this family, but the truth is, they don’t need you, not like you need them. Sam, he’s clearly John’s favourite. Even when they fight it’s more concern than’s ever shown you.
And then – the worst cliffhanger we had to suffer through – who will have survived? With this show just starting out, everything was possible, damn you, Eric Kripke.
Thanks for following me on my trip down memory lane. More will follow. In fact, four more seasons. And now – what are your favourite gems of this casket of treasures that is Supernatural?
Great Jas…love shirtless Dean WITH amulet! Beautiful screen caps. Where do you find the time! Bless you for all your articles!
Jas, what a wonderful idea for an article!
What a task re-visiting every single episode, my heart bleeds for you! Seriously though it is very daunting having to pick a single moment from each one ( or a couple of moments in some cases, but I`ll forgive you for that!)
The screen caps are wonderful, if I was a betting woman I could have made a fortune on your choice from `Hell House` but thank you most sincerely for DITW, Hookman, Heart you were more than fair with your selections!! Also loved the series of pics that `tell the story – the reunion with Dad was especially moving.
The script clips were brilliant too!
Cant wait for 2 , 3 , 4 and 5! Ju x
Hi Jasminka
Loving the screen caps and your reasons for picking specific scenes.
Some episodes I’d be able to choose a favourite scene, but others?
Wouldn’t be able to do it.
Can’t wait to see the rest.
Jas,
WOw, wow, wow…I am loving that you’re taking on this monumental task…I understand all too well how big a task this is. (and to think of all the screencaps you have to pore through—oh, dear, such dedication.) 😆
I don’t think I could have asked for better, a wonderful mix of both brothers, fangirl moments for both, drama and scares and happy times as well.
Looking forward to the other installments, you’ve set the bar hight.
🙂
Just one per episode? That’s impossible!
Re: Dead in the Water. What, no “Zeppelin rules?” Bah!
That’s probably the best moment in Home, but anything with Missouri is a close number two.
Scotty, you’ve got a smile that lights up the room.
Seriously? All the brilliant comedic moments in Hell House and you go for the shallow? Jas, I’m shocked and disappointed. 😉
One part of Azazel’s Devil’s Trap demagoguery that’s wonderfully evil (hell, the whole thing is) is when he says nothing and there’s the beyond creepy sound of flowing blood, this vaguely dissonant echo, and he simply stares at Dean; pure, unadulterated malevolence. Still SPN’s best ever bad guy.
How could you post that exchange between the brothers from Salvation. My heart sank and i tore up just by reading it.: You have to take responsibility for your actions. I hate feeling emotional. That moment was so revealing and downright sad especially when the result can be seen throughout the series. Not even shirtless Sam could fix it. And all the squee worthy brother moments just adds to making me cry. Damn you.:
I like what you’re doing Jas, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the seasons.
Love all of season one, but the one that hit the hardest was “Devil’s Trap” with Azazel’s torturing of Dean and the cliff hanger of all cliff hangers!
The most fun episode was “Hell House” and I can’t say how very much I love this episode. It has everything that I love about the brothers and what I currently am missing. I hope that we have not heard the last of “Bitch” and “Jerk”. These two guys grabbed my heart long ago and its been an emotional Impala ride ever since. 😛
Hey Jas, love the list. Ahhhh, the beauty of Season 1. Love your picks and the trip down memory lane. I don’t think I would pick anything different. I really miss the boys from this season. The smiles, the joking, the lightheartedness. Thank goodness for DVDs and TNT reruns. Looking forward to your picks for S2-5.
Jas,
Awesome list! Though I don’t envy the task of selecting just ONE favourite moment from each episode – I would have to qualify almost each episode as a whole moment if I were doing this list, hehe.
I loved all the character development moments in season one. Peeling back the layers of the characters was well done. I too like the more heart breaking moments – the confrontation between Dean and Sam in Asylum is one of my favourites, and Dean’s call to John in Home – that one had me reaching for the tissue.
Looking forward to the next installment!
Thanks for sharing! 😀
Totally agree, picking just one moment from each ep is really hard–you did an awesome job with this! A few of my favorites:
As weak as Route 666 was, I thought that shot of the Impala at night with the fog dissipating around it was really beautiful…
“Poltergeist, I love that movie!” from Phantom
I second Randal on “Scotty, you got a smile that lights up a room.”
Dean’s call to John is a high point of Home, but a second for me would be Sam sitting on the steps asking Missouri “What’s happening to me?” Dunno why, that still gets me every time.
I love “Faith” so much, it’s really hard to pick a favorite moment, but I’d have to go with the end where Dean tells Layla he’ll pray for her.:
Thanks for this–looking forward to reading the rest of your picks!
Loved snarky Dean & Meg from Devil’s Trap, too:
Where’s our father, Meg?
You didn’t ask very nice.
Where’s our father, bitch?
You kiss your mother with that mouth? Oh… you don’t.
Sablegreen, Julie, Karen, elle2, Randal, anene, Bevie, Leslie92708, Evelyn, Dany, Elle, ElenaM, gosh I’m late here… thank you!
Sablegreen, this is a way of going through sleepless nights. But it is also a task of love… and fun. … What can I say? I’ve fallen victim to supernaturalitis…
Julie, well, you know me a bit by now, don’t you? I needed the occasional shallow moment…
Karen, it was hard to choose a moment, and I could have put so many others into that piece, but, ah well… it would have been the Encyclopaedia Britannica then..
Elle2, I hope the other part will live up to your expectations.. thanks…
Randal, you’re right, I love Missouri too, Great lady! Don’t be shocked, Randal, you know me…
Anene, sorry, next time I’ll include tissues.
Bevie, that’s what we love about our show don’t we, that it holds our hearts… And it does. Every time, with every episode. I have a notion it might get even worse with the heart-groping.
Leslie, my pleasure. Enjoy the other parts.
Dany, there were moments I felt sorry for myself, too. When I started to work on this piece, I haven’t expected it to get to this dimensions. But it’s fun, too. I need to watch them all again and again… we’re heading to another hiatus .
Elle, I second that – some episodes are one single great moment! And the heartbreak… sometimes I feel like singing Amazing Grace all over… and stock up on tissues.
ElenaM, thanks for your ideas – I loved your picks… Poltergeist! Yeah! My fave moment in Faith is also the end, the screencap is actually the scene you refer to. And Sam’s question to Missouri is so devastating. We knew that something was going on, just like Sam, but never expecting THIS….
You rock, thanks for your reactions! Jas
