100 Favourite Moments of Supernatural – Season One
In celebration of the 100th episode of our beloved show, I took the task of choosing my fave moment from every episode. Had I known what was awaiting me, I should have better thought twice, ah, enough complaining, I’ve made my bed when I began to love this show with the first episode, buckle up, kind readers, this is going to be long, Five seasons to cover, Sometimes I will explain why this was a great moment, sometimes not, ah, well, so enjoy and sink your teeth into sweet, sometimes shallow , but always awesome memories,
Sam: I swore I was done hunting for good.
Dean: Come on, it wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t that bad.
Sam: Yeah? When I told dad I was scared of the thing in my closet, he gave me a .45.
Dean: Well, what was he supposed to do?
Sam: I was nine years old. He was supposed to say ‘don’t be afraid of the dark’.
Dean: Don’t be afraid of the dark? What, are you kidding me? Of course you should be afraid of the dark! You know what’s out there!
This is a tie – and I expect to find more dilemmas like this, Sam at Jessica’s grave, so heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time
Sam putting his life between the monster and the kids, people he barely knew.
Dead In The Water (1.3)
Dean is great with kids. In this scene he tries to console the poor traumatized boy Lucas with so much love and understanding that we knew how wonderfully he tried to take care of Sammy. Dean to Lucas: You’re scared, it’s okay, I understand. See, when I was your age, I saw something real bad happen to my mom, and I was scared, too. I didn’t feel like talking, just like you. But see my mom – I know she wanted me to be brave. I think about that every day. And I do my best to be brave. And maybe, your dad wants you to be brave, too. And, just one shallow moment – Dean barely ever looked better than in this episode. The way he was lit by the guys of photography was just marvellous.
Phantom Traveler (1.4)
Dean is scared of flying! This is hilarious. A guy who fights all kinds of monsters is afraid of flying. Ah, don’t you worry, sweetie, the flying isn’t that bad, it’s more the crashing that should bother you. However, this was one chink in the sarcastic armour of Dean, but most of us had already sensed by now that behind his cool exterior was a vulnerable, yet strong heart. But my favourite moment is the ending – the brothers listening to their father’s voice on the phone, One more heartbreaking moment and defining for the show – there was no better show on tv when Supernatural started and there still is none. I’m utterly biased, of course.
Bloody Mary (1.5)
The boys are keeping secrets from each other. Sam believes he is responsible for Jessica’s death. And Dean obviously has a dark secret of his own (which causes his eyes to bleed), of which we might never learn, Plus – one of the scariest episodes to date. Watching ‘The Ring’ killed me, and finding a reminiscent of that movie in this show freaked me out.
Dean: So, you lie to them?
Sam: No, I just don’t tell them everything.
Dean: Yeah, that’s called lying.
After all, lying to protect one another is the modus operandi in this family,. Although I would wish they could stop doing it, since it only causes pain in the end, I understand. And whenever they hide a terrible truth behind a lie, I am moved beyond words. But, I need a shallow moment here – Dean up close and without a shirt, well, did we really mind that this was a shapeshifter?
Hook Man (1.7)
You don’t see a happy face on Dean often. This one came up as he realized that there were many young, pretty students around,. That’s my boy, (and this coming from the SamGal,oh, my)
I will always remember this episode as one of Kim Manners’ signs of solidarity with his leading men. Jared and Jensen have often recounted how Mr Manners would not get into full body armour to shield himself from the thousands of bees but shot the scene in the attic in normal gear and got stung – just like his actors. So, that moment in the attic is my favourite spot, simply for that reason.
This is one of my all-time favourites ever. Confrontation with childhood trauma. Sam’s emerging abilities. Dean’s fear of going home. How to pick one single moment, oh dear? I’m gonna go with a tie, again. Dean: Dad, I know I’ve left messages before, I don’t even know if you get ’em. But I’m with Sam and we’re in Lawrence. And there’s something in our old house I don’t know if it’s the thing that killed mom or not, but please, I don’t know what to do, so whatever you’re doing, if you could get here, please I need your help, dad.
Sam laying eyes on his mother for the very first time. Sniff.
The set decoration. Apart from the haunting story, the set blew me away – you could almost feel the vibes of old-time-psychiatry, the lobotomies, the electric shocks, the embarrassing early days of science. That was so creepy I wasn’t able to sleep. Once again I noticed that the immense attention to detail is another testimony to the great quality of this show. It’s no wonder ,really, when you look at the incredible work the creative crews are doing, that Supernatural has been on air for five years, and coming back for another (and as the writers are sketching out more seasons, as Jensen and Jared revealed in L.A., who knows what treats will await us?). My compliments and respect to all you guys who work so hard and with so much passion behind the scenes!!! And, of course, the jaw-breaking, iconic scene with TwistedSam attempting to shoot his brother that will inspire some fans in a later season..
Dean: I hope your apple pie is freakin’ worth it!
