Top Six Favourite Episodes: Supernatural Season 8
Welcome back to “Top Six Favourites Episodes”, this time for season eight. These are, still to this day, the nearest and dearest to my heart, my comfort episodes, the ones I go to when I need a laugh or a cry or the comfort of an old friend.
Before you read my list, make your own list of season 8 favourites! It will be fun to compare your unbiased choices (before you are unduly influenced by my memories or picks) to mine. If you’re joining Nightsky and The WFB in the #SPNSummer2019 Rewatch, or rewatching at your own pace this hiatus, the episodes should be fresh in your mind! Save your list then, because you’ll need it for TOP 100 Episode challenge that The Winchester Family Business is running all hiatus! Nightsky reveals her Top 6 season 8 favourites after mine, so you’ll have two WFB staff lists as a comparison!
So without further ado, here’s my list of Season Eight Favourites! The list is by order of appearance only, as they all are equal in their importance to me.
1) “Hunteri Heroici”
I loved the Ode to Looney Tunes in this Episode. The beating heart that comes right out of his chest.
Walking on the air for a few seconds before plummeting to certain death.
Someone getting splattered by a falling anvil….
….where X marked the spot.
A talking cat that will call you a dumb-ass.
A gun that doesn’t shoot bullets, but offers the written sound effects.
Getting hit by a frying pan and leaving your face print.
A freeze frame with a….
and a …Latin-ish description.
Cas decides to become a hunter and gives Sam and Dean a case.
An elderly man, Fred Jones (played by Mike Farrell), is causing all the Looney Tune incidences.
2) “LARP and the Real Girl”
Sam and Dean talk to the Sheriff overseeing the strange case of a man being ‘quartered’.
The brothers find out Charlie knew the victim……
and is the Queen of Moondoor.
Dean joins in on the fun while investigating.
While Sam does his own style of investigating.
Charlie befriends Gilda the Faerie.
The stag-skull creature is controlling Gilda.
With the case solved and the Roll Playing to continue, the brothers both join in the fun. Dean gives his ‘Braveheart’ speech….
… while Charlie and Sam look on.
Sam and Dean head the charge.
3) “As Time Goes By”
We meet Henry Winchesters and a very young John.
Henry and Josie are being inducted into the Men of Letters society.
However, Josie is possessed by demon Abaddon and kills the fellow members.
Henry escapes, jumps to the future and meets his grandsons.
Dean lends John’s journal to Henry to learn more about his son.
The guarded box from the Men of Letters is passed down to Sam and Dean.
Henry introduces putting a sigil on the head of the bullet.
Dean beheads Abaddon while Henry slowly dies.
Sam and Dean come to Henry’s side as he dies.
The brothers bury Henry instead of giving him a hunters burial.
4) “Everybody Hates Hitler”
The box from the Men of Letters is a key….
…that leads Sam and Dean to the ‘Bunker’ and their new home.
While Sam checks out the reading material, Dean enjoys the artifacts.
Rabi Issac (played by Hal Linden) is a member of the Judah Initiative, another version of The Men of Letters. Unfortunately, the Rabi meets his end.
We are introduced to the Rabi’s grandson Aaron., who ……
… has inherited his grandfather’s Golem.
The brothers burn the remains of a Necromancer’s corpse. As Sam warms his hands over the fire….
…Aaron watches with the realisation, “Oh my God, these guys are psychopaths.”
After the case, the brothers settle into their new home.
5) “Pac-Man Fever”
Sam is starting to feel the effects of the Trials, sleeping many hours and having bedhead.
Charlie visits with a possible case.
Charlie works with Dean as Sam isn’t well enough.
However, Sam decides he’s ‘fine’ and joins them anyways.
They find out they are dealing with a Djinn.
She puts Charlie in a dream state. Dean later joins her dream to save Charlie.
We learn that Charlie’s mother has been in a coma and she’s been paying the bills. Charlie must face the fact that her mother will never come out of the coma and must decide to let her go. Dean comforts her with her decision.
After the case is over, Dean gives Sam an unexpected hug, realising that time is possibly short .
Meanwhile, Charlie visits and reads to her mother one last time before having her taken off life support.
6) “Sacrifice”
Naomi captures Metatron.
Sam and Dean arrive at a abandoned church to perform the final trial.
They capture Crowley and repeatedly inject him with human blood.
Crowley manages to send out a distress signal and Abaddon answers. However, she’s not there to save Crowley but to become Queen of Hell.
Naomi comes to help Dean and warns him that Sam’s life will end if he completes the trails.
Dean comes to stop Sam from continuing.
Sam feels he must continue despite the risk as he has to complete the trials.
After further convincing, Dean sways Sam to stop and gives him a much needed hug.
Meanwhile, Naomi is killed……
…by Metatron who captures Cas and takes his grace to finish his own trial of getting all the angels out of Heaven.
The season ends with the Angels falling.
Those are my top favourites for season eight! As promised, here are Nightsky’s “Top 6 Favourite Episodes” for season eight, in order of preference:
- “Sacrifice”
- “The Great Escapist”
- “Hunteri Heroici”
- “Goodbye Stranger”
- “Trial and Error”
- “Taxi Driver”
Nightsky: Season 8 has so many great episodes! “As Time Goes By” was my #7, because of Gil’s fabulous creation of Henry, and the boys meeting their grandfather and learning about the MoL legacy. My #8 and #9 are “LARP and the Real Girl” and “Pac Man Fever” because Charlie is just a gem. “Everybody Hates Hitler” would round out my Top 10.
