Fan Video of the Week: Supernatural Reflections 13.05 “Advanced Thanatology”
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” ― Mark Twain
Boy, this episode was a dive in the deep end. How reaching a breaking point can happen even to a strongest man. I mean if Sam ever drops to same state as Dean, I would be even more worried because he has strength to keep himself above the surface all times. Even if this was a case of the week, the word death fit for this episode. It connected to our Winchesters but also the entity that met Dean in the end. The episode was pretty grim all in all (See what I did there?), so I chose to compare our two Angel of Deaths, Big Daddy/Mommy grim reapers and Horseman/woman of the Apocalypse. Julian’s and Lisa’s Death are like night and day compared to one another.
Death, Julian Richings
This is the angel of death. Big daddy reaper. They keep this guy chained in a box six hundred feet under. Last time they hauled him up, Noah was building a boat. – Bobby Singer, 5.10 Abandon All Hope
Comparing the introductions, Julian’s Death wins. I mean it is regarded as one of the best introductions in Supernatural. Julian’s Death is quite the presence and his dry humor and love for food only adds to the character. His clothes and his horse/car, a pale 1959 Cadillac Coupe Deville with two door hard top, add even more to his old charming gentleman look. You really felt like he would be able to kill you just with a snap of his fingers. Also what made Death’s presence so strong was how the Winchesters reacted to him.
You could imagine this entity walking quietly down the streets and nobody would think he was out of place. His scythe also had different variations. The most scary one was the small scythe that Dean returned. It was also more practical than the real size one that we saw many seasons later. It was creepy and horror movie like. Julian’s Death will be forever missed.
Appeared in 5.21 “Two Minutes to Midnight”, 6.11 “Appointment in Samarra”, 7.01 “Meet the New Boss”, 9.01 “I Think I’m Gonna Like It Here” and 10.23 “Brother’s Keeper”.
Supernatural – Death Introduction (Oh Death)
Death (Billie), Lisa Berry
It’s funny to hear a Winchester talk about the finality of dying. This reality, it has rules, Dean. So many rules. And one of them: kill one incarnation of Death, like you did. The next reaper to die, takes his place. So, when Castiel stabbed me in the back, turns out I got a promotion. New job. New gear. – Billie, 13.05 Advanced Thanatology
Lisa’s Death introduction was a surprise but not that breathtaking (Her reaper introduction on the other hand is also one of the best in the show.). We do not know what vehicle she drives but I could imagine her driving a black motorbike with silver decorations like Deus Grievous Angel, or a black Ferrari 448 GTB. The Deaths we have had are presented to us by their personalities. That is why Lisa’s Death is cold but has a litte more sass. She has a presence, with her black clothes and steel scythe. The black leather gloves and long jacket are especially a treat.
Still, one thing bothered me. I guess it was the abnormal and clinical set we mostly saw her in but I just couldn’t imagine her walking among the people. It was like something felt off about her. She would have been noticed for sure. I don’t see her blending in. One thing she kept up was her threatening presence like Julian also had, but now she has a greater understanding of the Winchesters and what they mean to this world. And I really loved her sass. That is something we never did see with Julian. I hope they could fit her into the story from time to time.

You wanna die… | Dean Winchester (13×05) by: Eleanor Winter
Falling Apart by Michael Schulte
I am sleepless for a weekend
So I start to say goodbye
Say goodbye to all that he had
Say goodbye to what we lost
We don´t talk
We´re not enough & the storms slowly arise
When the light turns & the cold times arise
We were out & out
Through the storms, Throught the night
We were running in the dark, We were following our hearts
& we would fall down
We would slowly fall apart
We would slowly fall into the dark
It is hard to let it all go
Let the past just disappear
Try to run time from an old life
But it always drags me down
We don´t talk
We´re not enough & the storm slowly arise
When the light turns & the cold times arise
We were out & out
Through the storms, Throught the night
We were running in the dark, We were following our hearts
& we would fall down
We would slowly fall apart
We would slowly fall into the dark
We were out & out
Through the storms, Throught the night
We were running in the dark, We were following our hearts
& we would fall down
We would slowly fall apart
We would slowly fall into the dark
We were out & out
Through the storms, Throught the night
We were running in the dark, We were following our hearts
& we would fall down
We would slowly fall apart
We would slowly fall into the dark
& the cold times arise
& the cold times arise

Quotes
Dean: What is that? A monster? Is this the one you told the cops about? You know… I know what it’s like to see monsters. And I know that when they’re gone, they never really go away. You see ’em when you close your eyes. You see ’em in your dreams… But you know what? Me and my brother? We’re the guys that stop the monsters. We’re the guys that scare them. But you gotta talk to me.
Dean: I’m fine.
Sam: No, you’re not, Dean. You said you don’t believe in anything, and — and that’s… that’s not true. That’s not you. You — you — you do believe in things. You believe in people. That’s who you are. That’s what you do. I know you’re in a dark place, and I-I just want to help.
Dean: Okay. Look, I-I’ve been down this road before. I fought my way back. I will fight my way back again.
Sam: How?
Dean: Same way I always do — bullets, bacon, and booze. A lotta booze.
Dean: What do you want me to say? Doesn’t matter. I don’t matter.
Billie: Don’t you?
Dean: I couldn’t save Mom. I couldn’t save Cas. I can’t even save a scared little kid. Sam keeps trying to fix it, but I just keep dragging him down. So I’m not gonna beg. Okay, if it’s my time, it’s my time.
Billie: You really believe that. You wanna die. Dean… every notebook on this particular shelf tells a version of how you die. You specifically — heart attack, burned by a red-haired witch, stabbed by a ghoul in a graveyard, and on and on. But which one’s right? That depends on you, on the choices you make.
Dean: Well, I guess I made my choice.

Trivia and Minutiae
Thanatology is the scientific study of death.
Dean and Sam use the aliases “Agents Page and Plant,” referencing Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and lead singer Robert Plant. As stated in the episode, it’s a somewhat commonly used alias of the brothers, except Sam typically uses the name Page.
Dean: What’s up with the creepy-ass mask?
Sam: It’s a plague mask. Doctors used to use them. They thought they filtered out disease. As a matter of fact, when they arrested Meadows, he was wearing one. They had to hold him down to rip it off.
Used in France in the 17th century, the plague doctor costume consisted of ankle-length overcoat and a bird-like beak mask to protect against airborne diseases. The plague mask was in use by Roman doctors as far back as the 14th century.
Death’s various notebooks on the way Dean dies bears some similarity to the manga/anime Death Note, where shinigami, gods of death, write down the names of people and their deaths in their own personal Death Notes.
