The sneak peek:
Question: Can the show give us any scoop on Supernatural Episode 11, which is rumored to have a de-aged Dean? —Kim
Ausiello: Dean’s not physically de-aging, but rather “trapped in a Memento-type loop, where he’s kind of losing his memory a little bit,” Dabb previews. “For him, as someone who struggles with all the baggage from years and years of doing a very, very difficult job, it almost becomes freeing, in a way. So you’re going to see a Dean that is a lot more fun and childlike. Jensen [Ackles] does a great job. Then it becomes a much more tragic story as he starts to forget Sam — and himself.”
During this Thursday’s episode (The CW, 8/7c), which finds Dean struggling with rapid memory loss, “there’s a beautiful scene where he is talking to himself in the mirror, and he just cries a single tear,” Ruth Connell, who plays the Winchesters’ witchy frenemy Rowena, tells TVLine.
You get to hear about something from [Rowena’s] past [that has] to do with this family of witches,” Connell teases. “I always love when I get to dip into the more human aspects of Rowena.”
She calls this episode “one of the strongest scripts” she’s read.
After all this time, it is still tough to nail down Rowena’s true motives — is she a hero or a villain? What’s the deal with Dean’s memory? Can Rowena and Crowley ever find some sort of familial normalcy? According to Connell, these are the gray areas worth exploring — and fans have some intriguing plot points to look forward to.
How does she react when Sam comes to her for help saving Dean?
I love the little scene where he calls me. She can work out there’s something in it for her. She’s a bit like Crowley: she truly enjoys being the in the game, the fight, the thick of it. Can probably never really have a really quiet life. Until we know what our bigger purpose is, she’ll get muddled up in the trouble of the Winchesters. She can’t help herself.Does she take Sam’s concern about Dean seriously or is she having fun with him as this is going on?
She’s always, always having fun with the boys. I think to have something to make them beg for is always fun. To get them to put their cards on the table more is always fun. She’s a great negotiator. I wish I had some of her ability [personally] as an actor. [Laughs] I wish I was more able to be the negotiator that Rowena is.
When it comes to Rowena’s role on Supernatural, the one-time villain has now turned into more of a helping hand. Sure, she usually has her own agenda, but there’s no doubt that from time to time, the Winchesters need a little magic. And in this week’s episode, Dean’s in desperate need of help when he starts to lose his memory.
“I actually think it’s a really strong episode for Jensen [Ackles],” Ruth Connell tells EW. “There’s a lot of humor as well as a little bit of pathos.” And for Rowena, there’s nothing quite like a potential clean slate with a Winchester. “There’s people that you know but if you couldn’t remember their past or didn’t know who they were, you might have a different response to them. There’s fun to be had there. It’s definitely some of the most that I’ve laughed on set and Jensen gets to flex his comedy muscles. But there’s a really touching scene in it as well where he did cry a single tear when he was filming it.”
