Supernatural’s Brotherly Moments Part 2: No Chick-Flick Moments!
When I started this series, I tried to make this a Top Ten List of “broments”. When I found that was simply not possible, I pondered what constitutes a Brotherly Moment and realized it was more than just the heart to heart, hugging, emotional moments.
Broment: When dudes share a special moment with each other.
Brother: A person whom you are related to. Sometimes a role model. Sometimes an ass. Sometimes a friend. A person who you are stuck being related to until the day you die through good or bad.
(Note: Both definitions found in the online Urban Dictionary)
So I created several categories of Broments. In fact there ended up being so many broments that I will be writing and sharing them in a four part series! Part 1 was ‘The Family Business’, dedicated to the brothers’ working relationship, i.e. the things the brothers have to do repeatedly in their line of work, creating moments they share together while working side by side.
I felt the pranks, the way Sam and Dean work together on a case and even the times they disagree could be considered Brotherly Moments, too.
Laughter: (noun) the action or sound of laughing. An inner quality, mood, disposition, etc., suggestive of laughter; mirthfulness. an expression or appearance of merriment or amusement.
So this section is dedicated to the lighter side of the brothers relationship. Looking at the various fun, joking and quality times they have shared together over the years!
Pranks: A trick of an amusing, playful, or sometimes malicious nature.
We know both Sam and Dean have dabbled in this practice at one time or another.
Dean with his ‘taking picture of sleeping brother with plastic spoon in mouth’ …
Itching powder in the undies ….
Making Sam sit in a phobia inducing clown chair.
Along with his ‘ I dare you to drink this’.
Then there is Sam taking superglue …
and tampering with Dean’s beer
or tampering with the Impala(EEEEKS), having everything come on when the ignition was started … i.e. wipers, radio full blast….
leaving Dean a little unimpressed.
However the brothers have on occasion joined forces and …
taken the opportunity to prank a couple of unsuspecting ‘Ghostfacers’.
Teasing: To make fun of (someone) playfully or taunt annoyingly.
This has been very popular with the brothers over the years. Just to name a few…..
Dean teasing Sam about his powers: ‘Hey, Sam, who do you think is a hotter psychic: Patricia Arquette, Jennifer Love Hewitt, or you?’
Tormenting his hung-over brother: ‘You know there’s a really good cure for a hangover. It’s a greasy pork sandwich served up on a dirty ashtray’
And then there is Sam getting his own digs in on Dean… ‘So, you got sidelined by a thirteen-year-old girl, huh?’
and giving Dean a hard time about his dating app ‘Impala67’!
The Set-up: To place someone in an awkward or unpleasant situation by guile or deceit.
How many times have we seen Dean baiting Sam into an awkward situation to either…
gain access…
or gain information for a case.
Resulting in Sam giving Dean his…
signature Bitchface, time …
and time again.
Sing-A-Longs: An informal occasion when people sing together in a group, a light popular song or tune to which one can easily sing along in accompaniment.
Classic rock has been a major part of the brothers lives, especially with Dean. On many occasions Dean has turned on the radio or put in a tape, turned up the volume and hit the road with Sam at his side.
Having the brothers singing along together during one of those long road trips was a nice, rare occurrence .
However Dean singing solo to a song when he shouldn’t even know the words ..
has caught Sam a little off guard on a couple of occasions .
The brothers may never had caroling on a list of things to do, but it did come in handy to back out of a awkward situation.
Leisure Time: Time when one is not working or occupied; free time. Use of free time for enjoyment or an opportunity to do something.
During their down time, the brothers have been able to spend some quality time together.
Teaching little brother how to care for Baby.
Watching some Football during the holidays.
Enjoying classic comedy shows.
Having a few brews between towns.
Enjoying a peaceful moment by the lake.
Even taking time to view the night skies.
The brothers have also had some funny, cute moments…
Making funny faces.
Booping a brothers nose while slightly drugged up.
Exposing ones ‘Pudding’ to get out of a sticky situation…
…leaving the other brother a little scarred for life.
Leaping for joy when restored to proper age.
Helping one’s brother stay focused.
Showing concern for an alien-adducted brother …ummm..
Showing concern for an alien adducted brother.
And having some Larping fun.
Trickster : A supernatural figure appearing in various guises and typically engaging in mischievous activities, important in the folklore and mythology of many primitive peoples and usually conceived as a culture hero.
This last section is in honour of the Trickster, who by setting up a chain of events and messing with their heads has given us some very funny moments between the brothers.
Wrestling over a money clip.
Exaggerating Dean’s snacking.
Exaggerating Sam’s compassion.
Riding a Tandem bike.
Being Game Show participants.
Being Television actors.
Promoting a Commercial product.
Transforming Sam into the Sampala.
And having a good laugh.
I hope you enjoyed this section of the Brotherly Moments!
Are there any fun moments that you would add to the list? Please share! Gifs welcome!
Next up is Brotherly Moments Part Three – ‘Brothers in Unison’
Karen, thank you so much for this. I smiled and laughed my way through this article. Your first two installments reminded me why I will never give up on SPN. Just one great broment can redeem an entire episode for me. I can’t wait to see Part 3.
Great article. I am hoping for a few more broments this year than we’ve been getting especially in season 10 which had very few. It seemed like the MoC stole Dean’s brotherly concern from him. I am missing “big brother Dean” more than I can say.

E, I agree wholeheartedly with that statement. Along with Sam being sidelined for so many episodes, that was my main gripe with the season. The only display of brotherly concern by Dean that I can recall offhand was in Werther. Given that the brotherly relationship is the main reason I watch the show, the lack of it this season really made me feel a little detached from most episodes. I just wasn’t as emotionally engaged as I have been virtually every other season. If the cause of Dean’s detachment from Sam was simply the effects of the MOC, well, that’s just one more reason that the MOC plot LONG overstayed its welcome. Even S 9 (which is my least favorite season, although S 10 is a close second) had a multitude of great broments in the first half. I LOVED Dean in the first half of the season. So bring on the broments in S 11!
Yeah. I could certainly understand the MoC taking Dean’s warm-fuzzies away from him, but it wasn’t really clear that the Mark was the reason. We can assume that, and its not even that far of a stretch to do so, but it was not clear. I would have liked for that to have been more specific because his indifference was hard to watch. It might have been easier to take Dean’s seemingly lack of concern if we could see without a doubt that it was because of the Mark; it would have been even better if someone had commented on it, but alas! those days are over apparently. I REALLY hope that they rectify it in season 11. I guess its too much to hope that it will be acknowledged in some way……but if Dean begins to be his more normal Big Bro self I will be happy with that. 🙂
