The WFB Spoilery Lite/Speculative Preview: Supernatural Episode 10.16 Update 2
It’s Wednesday night. Empire is done for the season, so our competition is less. What do we know about episode 10.16?
We have the Press Release
SUPERNATURAL “Paint it Black” — (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET)
ROWENA MAKES PLANS TO RECLAIM HER MAGICSam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate a string of suicides committed by people with little in common other than the identical, grisly method of death – slow, self-administered disembowelment. All of the victims were members of a Catholic church and had recently given confession, leading the brothers to suspect the priest (guest star Stephen Daniel Curtis) is somehow involved. Meanwhile, when Crowley (Mark Sheppard) captures Olivette (guest star Teryl Rothery), the leader of the Grand Coven, Rowena (guest star Ruth Connell) pleads her case to be allowed to practice magic freely again. John Showalter directed this episode written by Brad Buckner & Eugenie Ross-Leming (#1016). Original airdate 3/25/2015.
The Official Promo
The Sneak Peek
And the Promotional Photos
I have to admit, I’m not getting a lot from what we know. The MOTW sounds like something we haven’t met before. Suicide by disembowelment sounds messy and nasty. The Press Release says the boys suspect the priest, but the promo and the photos seem to focus on the nun. We are also going to go back to Rowena and Crowley. Maybe we will find out more about the Grand Coven? Perhaps we will find out what exactly Rowena did to get banned from practicing magic freely again. What do you think is causing the suicides? Does Rowena want more than just her magic back? Do you think this will tie into the larger story of the Mark of Cain? Or is the Crowley storyline completely separate? I admit I’m not getting much of a feeling for what will happen in this episode. What ideas do you have? Let us know in the comments.
Today three interviews with Ruth Connell have been published. One from Screenfad, EW, and BuddyTV. In all of the interviews she discusses Rowena’s relationship with Crowley and hints at what is going on with the Grand Coven.
What do you think? Do these articles make you more interested in the Rowena/Crowley story?
And in an unusual move, we have a producer’s preview with Jeremy Carver.
I’m not sure I see suicide by disembowlment as “romantic”, but maybe? And if they are disembowling themselves, their anatomy is severely off, because the guy in the clip? Is stabbing near his heart. Anyway, we have a little more information.
Gotta tell ya, speaking as an ex-nun, the MOTW’s the gal in gray.
Please move the MOC storyline along. Please have this not be just as another filler. Last weeks episode was good but enough with tbe parallels/anvils!!!! Let’s see some actual MOCDean action. Some ActionSammy!!!! Ah, but it is the ND so… fingers crossed!
What is the ND?
I think it means notorious duo aka meaning the writers that wrote this episode.
– Lilah
Thanks Lilah. I never would have guessed that. I think it’s kind of funny though.
Nepotism Duo. As in Robert Singers wife. Nepotism: “The practice among those with power and influence of favoring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs.” Some people feel this has to be the reason his wife has the writing gig due to the ineptness repeatedly displayed. I don’t know if the other half of that writing team is related or not but they always write as a pair so they share equally in their suckitude. I do have to give them some credit, they have gotten better past few? episodes but they are still the weakest in the writing stable.
Hmm, “suckitude.” I like it. Henceforth I shall try to work it into most of my comments.
.
Well here’s one for ya! Tonights episode is a prime example of major suckitude that is the talents of the nefarious Nepotism Duo. Except for Deans confession and Sams saving the day (but did he keep the witches journal?!?) – that was truly horrible. Painful to sit and watch. I was going to do my customary immediate rewatch but decided it would be more exciting to just go to sleep!
Aaaaaaaaand a crash and burn!!!!! Please tell me these two writers have graced us with their immense talents and that they are done for the season! I don’t think I can bear them screwing up an important episode when we have such few left.
Andrew Dabb is next week, Robbie Thompson is the one after that. Robert Berens, Adam Glass and Jenny Klein should come up before the duo and Carver may grace us with his presence for the finale. That leaves one episode that doesn’t fall under these people, so we may be done or we may not be done. If I’m missing a writer I’ll be glad.
They’re playing this one close to the vest. A bit of a stretch but here goes; this takes place in Massachusetts; and this season is supposed to involve witches. Given that the infamous witch trials took place in Salem, Massachusetts, maybe this suicide by self-disembowelment is some sort of retribution by witches and/or the grand coven?
Interesting!
Yeah.. agree with the whole “not really disembowelment” thing. You have to “dis” the bowels, as in lower abdomen. This looked more like hara-kiri than anything. I’m not getting a sense of much in this one either. Not that interested in Rowena or the Grand Coven although I assume that its going to play into the MoC arc which BADLY needs some movement of some kind, so I guess I can put up with Rowena as long as it gets us somewhere in the other more important stories. And here’s my prayer; Please God, let Sam have something to say either than exposition. Let the components of his building story (if there is one) be more evident here. Let him speak a few personal words… to let us know how he’s feeling… just a few? How about 5 words? That’s not being too greedy. Thank you Lord in the name of the Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit….. Amen.
Sam who? Oh… that tall guy following Dean around. Right..
I swear if there’s no teaser for a Sam-going-down-a-dark-path in this episode it had better be in the next one! CMON writers!
I’m resigned that Sam is going to go down a dark path in the last five minutes of the season finale. The Dean will not shut up about how horrible Sam is for the first half of season eleven.
First half, Percy? Dont you mean the first 21 episodes and then Dean will be agast as to why Sam feels like crap and then the writers will make it appear that Sam was a big ol meanie for not thanking Dean for the continuous beratement. Sam needs to take a page out of Sheldon coopers book and have Dean sign a ‘brother agreement’. What exactly Dean wants Sam to do in any particular situation, for how long, when, where and etc…etc… Then gets it notorized with Castiel and Charlie as witnesses.
So when Sam does exactly what Dean wants and Dean starts to bitch and complain Sam can remind him about the contract.
How are these five words: Sam to Dean- “I would die for you.” But the 5 that these writers are more likely to script are: “I did this to you.” Now go in peace E.
Wow. I don’t get all the animosity shown in some of the posts on this site. I get that viewers are invested in these characters-that’s why the show is going to have an 11th season. But geez!
Sam and Dean make mistakes in judgement. The differences between them is the scale of the impact of those decisions.
Sam trusts Ruby, we get Lucifer rising.
Dean trusts Benny, monsters in Purgatory get killed.
Sam trusts Grandpa Campbell and we end up with Leviathans.
Dean trusts Gordon, vamps get killed and Sam endangered.
Face it folks, Sam does have more to atone for than Dean. It’s just fact. Dean’s decisions affect individuals. Sam’s decisions affected the world.
Some of you say Dean treated Sam like crap over the years? Watch the show again. Sam has been nastier to Dean than Dean was to him. Dean just gets Sam and ignores a lot of it. But of course he can’t ignore the bad decisions Sam made.
Some of you say Sam doesn’t have a story this season, like working as hard as he can to save the one person on earth who has always loved him is not a big deal. It is. Especially when that person has given up and resigned himself to his fate. I’ll just remind these folks that it was Sam who rejoined Charlie’s two halves and figured out how Andrew was still around. Smart Sam is alive and well.
As for me, I love both of Sam and Dean because they represent two archetypes of strong men. Supernatural is a great show that tells great stories.

I have watched the show again from the beginning and I say that because it’s true that Dean has abused him since the pilot. Who is the one who has punched the other one repeatedly just because he didn’t like what Sam said to him? Dean. Did you even watch season 4 and 5 where Dean continually berated Sam and called him names? Maybe you should rewatch the series without your Dean is always right filter.
Sam trusts Grandpa Campbell and we end up with Leviathans.
Not true. This one’s on Cas.
Face it folks, Sam does have more to atone for than Dean. It’s just fact. Dean’s decisions affect individuals. Sam’s decisions affected the world.
And he did atone by going into the cage to save the world. He has more than atoned for his honest mistakes. (Honest because he didn’t have correct information to base his decisions on. Angels and demons lied to both Sam and Dean and Dean would have killed Lillith too). Dean was equally as guilty for the apocalypse and he hasn’t done any atoning for it. Only Sam has. Each brother broke 1 seal. That means they share equal responsibility. Dean won’t even admit his part in it.
I really think that if we are going to go back to the Pilot to discuss who did what between Sam and Dean throughout the years, that it doesn’t belong in this thread.
Amen! It will just get real ugly, real fast. Please take it elsewhere.
Amen, especially since we all know it’s Adam’s fault. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
I agree, and really didn’t mean to start one. I apologize for causing it and from now on will keep my posts directed at the issues raised by the original writer of the article, unless I am directly replying to another persons comment.
I was just amazed at all the negativity I see in some comments on articles. I guess I don’t understand why people watch a show if they don’t like what is happening on it. One can stop watching, write fan fiction or rewatch the earlier shows. I don’t watch the new Doctor Who’s because I liked the old ones so much. I don’t rag on the new series because lots of people like it, and more power to them. I just don’t watch it myself. My son and a zillion other people ignore the Star Wars prequels.
