Robin’s Rambles: Supernatural 10.04 “Paper Moon”
This standalone episode was very good. It brought back Kate, a werewolf Sam and Dean encountered in a previous episode.
The episode began with the brothers vacationing by a lake, drinking beer, wearing shades, and relaxing.
Dean, however, was antsy, wanting to get to work. The brothers decided to investigate a series of murders in a Washington town in which the hearts were taken from mutilated bodies. That smelled of werewolf to the Winchesters.
Turns out that Kate is being a good werewolf, eating chickens instead of people, but her little sister, who she turned werewolf to save her life after a bad car accident, is embracing the slice ‘n’ dice, gobble the hearts portion of the were-life. Sam and Dean tricked Kate into revealing where she was hiding her sister by Dean claiming they had a cure for lycanthropy.
At the cabin, the brothers were attacked by a group of were-groupies that Kate’s sister had turned. Dean and Sam used their special knives to make quick work of these guys. They were all set to kill Kate’s sister, too, but Kate got her sister alone and did the sad job herself, knifing her to death while her sister jabbered on about the wonderful were-lives they were going to have together.
Kate realized that her sister couldn’t be turned into a chicken eater like she was; she was too far gone.
The brothers had several “heart to heart” discussions in this episode.
Dean told Sam he felt the need to work, and that he must do the right thing because he was sick and tired of doing the wrong thing. They also discussed their equal culpability in Lester’s death and selling his soul.
The parallels drawn between sisters Kate and Tasha and Sam and Dean were blatant. Tasha was the out-of-control sibling who needed to be put down for her sake and that of others. Is Dean the Tasha of the Winchester duo–or is Sam?
In hospital when this aired. No DVR, no repeat viewing. I do not like the writing of this show ANYMORE. There have been more substantive talks on edges of beds or picnic tables.
I sadly have to agree with you Nolanola. It all feels like, been there, done that and did it way better in the past. As I said in another post it’s like they keep recycling old stories and not doing it very well.
I loved it! and my friends who are fans loved it too. So good to see the bros talking and listening to each other, after the last 2 seasons of strife and nastiness.
One of the turned into werewolves who attack Sam and Dean looks much like the brother vampire in Annie Alexis etc. It was an introspective episode. When the brothers talked, they did not always express themselves clealry- but when they did, it opened up veins. Anyone see a bit of a reversal in that Dean wants to talk and Sam is hesitant. It only took 2 scenes for Sam to admit he lied. That was refreshing. THere was more good than bad in this episode. I am just not a fan of Kate from Bitten. Liked the parallels but sometimes the hammer came out-really Dean was a demon? Loved the opening no hunting sign and the mood. Maybe the viewers needed a vacation from the heavy paced first three episodes and a lead into the musical. No cry baby pie with this comment.
Sorry Debbab, but I think a lot of fans have issues with some of the writers and the writing (and other things). You don’t have to agree. Calling their posts “cry baby pie” isn’t very respectful in my opinion.
I don’t think it’s cry baby pie to not want Supernatural to become a parody of itself. I’m not going to be satisfied with mediocre when the show used to be so much better. I like the heartfelt emotions as much as most fans but they need to flow from the episode and story not BE the story. Just my opinion.
Thanks Robin. I enjoyed this episode as well. Not the best but it was a fine episode. I loved the brothers attempts to communicate without overreacting. They were drained and have been through a lot the last few years. It was awkward and far from perfect but I was heartened to see it. In “brother-speak” volumes were said about love and devotion. Dean started to fall into his pattern of going on offense and deflection but he backed off and offered some honesty which was refreshing. I feel it’s a start.
Personally i dont really care where the show goes in terms of story. When i watch Supernatural I feel like it is all happening, so bad writing doesnt even occur to me. Its more like, oh what a dull day for Sam n Dean, rather than a poorly written episode. But thats just my way of thinking when it comes to this show. I love Supernatural and it is by far my favourite show.
