TV Guide Interview with Jeremy Carver on Supernatural Season Ten
As we run up to tomorrow’s premiere, we are getting a spate of interviews on season 10.
From TV Guide
On Demon DeanHow does Demon Dean compare to the Dean we know?
Jeremy Carver: I think he’s a better singer. He is probably much more carefree in the sense that he doesn’t care about anything. He’s not particularly loyal to anyone [or] anything.
And
I think the interesting part which we sort of explore is how much real Dean is still in there in terms of how much control does real Dean have over Demon Dean. And that’s something we deal with head-on in certain circumstances and in some ways we leave it open to interpretation.
And later
We’ve seen demons who are very likable. Will Demon Dean be empathetic?
Carver: I think he will be because he’s Dean.
Then there is Sam
And I think in his relentless pursuit for his brother, Sam is going to make certain moral choices or decisions that help him track Dean down, which at the time will seem necessary in order to do what he needs. But once he’s called on the carpet for these things, he’ll begin to realize I think how morally depraved he was in certain situations as well.
And finally, Cas
But he’s coming back this season and his grace is fading, he’s dying and he very much wants to find Dean. But he’s not hand in hand with Sam finding Dean for reasons we touch upon in the opener. So in some ways, he’s very much a man in need of a mission and the mission that is handed to him becomes something very different, becomes something very personal and evolves over the course of the season, making Cas really take stock into really what this central mission of what being an angel on Earth is.
So what do you think? Tell us in the comments.
Man…. pretty much any I hope I’ve had about the coming season is basically just shot to hell by this point. The clips I’ve seen with Demon Dean?…. Meh; talk about a cop out. And the “story” they’ve concocted for Sam? Just no. So basically there’s this… Dean is just regular old lovable Dean, but a really, really happy go lucky Dean whose having fun for the first time in his life, but not to worry, he’s still that empathetic, fuzzy, wuzzy, super speeechiaal Dean we all know and wuv only without the crushing guilt that he’s been wallowing in for years. What exactly is Sam supposed to be saving him from anyway? A good time? His normal empathetic self? Bad Karaoke? The way TPTB coddle Dean as a character, never allowing him to do anything that even remotely makes him look bad, and then watering down the things he DOES do so that he gets a free pass, even sympathy for his terrible acts is just downright strange. I can’t even figure it out any more.
And then poor, maligned Sam… damned if he doesn’t save his brother (season 8) and damned if he does (“called on the carpet”). Guess Dean won’t be grateful and will lambast Sam for his choices AGAIN…. I mean, what a surprise, like that’s never happened before. I’m not sure why Sam is even bothering at this point, nothing he does will ever be good enough, no one will ever thank him for the sacrifices he makes, no one recognizes what he’s been through. He can’t even get a simple apology out of his brother for basically using him as an angel condom against his will. This lesson Dean is supposedly learning about not having any control over what you’re doing and being a victim of circumstance? (although he really isn’t because he CREATED the circumstance, so tough noogies) When’s he gonna learn it cause I am about done with him and this “three year arc” of Carvers.
Well said E. I’m afraid of the Dean angst when he is ‘saved”. “Oh god. I sang kareoke! And had fuuuuunnnnn!” Dives into a case of whiskey “I’m such a horrible person. I had sex with a consenting woman and said snarky things. I was soooo evil. I never wanted to be like that.”
You could of knocked me down with a feather after reading that no really you could. What with ‘I am having the best time of my life’ Demon Dean and ‘Called on the Carpet ‘ Sam and his morally depraved choices I wonder why they made Dean a demon ?.
I will admit that when I read this I thought Dean, the empathetic demon and Cas, the angel with a mission will go find Casper the Friendly Ghost and they will all find Sam and tell him how depraved he is. I’m really hoping Carver is Trolling us or at least misleading us as to Sam’s “depravity”. Then, again, I was sure that at some point in season eight we would get one flashback to Sam looking through the smoking ruins of Dick Roman’s company and finding the Leviathan that was imitating Dean and see Sam say “I know you are in heaven and I’ll let you have peace. Now go get your crusts cut off your PB&J sandwiches.”. So the show hasn’t exactly delivered what I wanted since Carver took over.
Insight?! Into Sam and why he did what he did? Why he thought what he thought?!?! You must be daft. :p
I know I am being excessively negative here, and for those who are looking forward to the season, I apologize, but I’ve pretty much had it….. and I can’t even believe that I am saying that. There just doesn’t seem to be anything interesting or compelling about the story that they are creating. They aren’t challenging the characters in any real way… .it’s just more of the same old thing, the same old story, the same old conflicts. Maybe I’ll be wrong, maybe I’ll be surprised, but I am not holding out much hope because I haven’t been surprised in years; haven’t felt this show has done interesting or innovative things with their characters in years. TPTB have their formula (a formula I loath) and I don’t see them changing it any time soon because as far as they are concerned, it’s working (ratings are up after all, but, news flash, rating and quality are mutually exclusive). Recent interviews have convinced me that TPTB are clueless about what they are writing (hence a story about forced consent that went nowhere with no insight into the victim of such a crime or knowledge gained by the perpetrator, or hyping up making one of your main leads a demon who is then not really demonic in any way) or why and how this show works. Plot supersedes character and will continue to do so until either Carver steps down or the show ends.
