Interview with Jeremy Carver on Supernatural season 10
Jeremy Carver has an interview discussing Demon Dean, Sam and season 10
Excerpt
TVLINE | What does that mean for his relationship with Sam?
Their relationship very much ended on an up note last year. So as a sort of answer to the beginning of Season 8, when Sam actively didn’t look for his brother, Sam this year is really looking for his brother but doesn’t have any idea of what happened to him when the season starts. Sam is so invested in finding his brother that it leads him to do some questionable things that will make him and, certainly, the audience wonder which one of these guys is the true monster.
for the rest of the interview go to TV Line
I obviously should not have expected anything different.
Oh…sh…cr…darn.
This is the line that has me concerned. I’m intrigued by Demon!Dean. I am VERY pleased that they’ve got Sam looking for/trying to rescue Dean – proving his devotion to his brother is just as strong…. BUT….. It’s not as if Sam hasn’t been viewed as the monster (by fandom) before – even when he was really not in the wrong, or had been possessed/soulless, or was attempting to do the right thing, or……. Do we really need to make it canon? 🙁
I’m completely disgusted by this interview. Why does he have to continue to make Sam out to be a monster when Sam is finally fully human. For once, I would like Dean to be the monster. WTH!
I’m hanging on to hope with my fingernails here…. Carver is notorious for “clouding the issue” with his interviews, and giving out misleading or incomplete (if not inaccurate) hints, imo. I’m desperately hoping that it is not going to play out the way it sounds.
Well I am all for Sam saving Dean .But do we have to go down the road of having him do questionable things to the extent that he and we question who the real monster is ?
Sam is so invested in finding his brother that it leads him to do some questionable things that will make him and, certainly, the audience wonder which one of these guys is the true monster.
Horrible Horrible..vomit inducing garbage.
I’m thinking that Sam is going to do whatever it takes to get Dean back. Sounds to me like he is going to make choices he would have never made in the past. So both of these guys are going to come out of this pretty wounded. I hope st50 is right and that Carver is being deliberately misleading or at least clouding the statement so it is as much of a surprise as possible for the fans. Now that it is pretty certain the show is going on past this season there has to be a big dilemma brewing for the guys for next year.
I think Sam will just go to great lengths to save his brother. In no spot Carver says that Sam is going to change to a monster. Sam might walk the fine line with good and bad. Meaning that having help from monsters etc. which was my take. I think it is suppose to be clouded at this point what it means…

It has been a shadow on Sam’s character for the best part of the series . I had hoped with Dean’s situation and Sam having lines he would not cross that we did not end up with ‘questionable acts ‘ to such a degree that we end up asking who the true monster is.
I read this and I instantly thought of Sam and his one man crusade in Mystery Spot. How he isolated himself from Bobby, how completely militant and scary he got. I’m wondering if that’s the Sam we’re going to see here. If so, I’m all aboard. And yes, Carver can’t be taken word for word. It’s all in the hidden implication. In other words, he wants us to see for ourselves.
That’s also how I read it. If that’s what’s going on, then bring it! I love Mystery Spot Sam. I don’t really have an issue with the boys getting a little dark, as long as they do it for each other: Dean selling his soul, Sam trying to open the gates of hell, Kripke’s original plan to have Sam go dark-side to save Dean, etc.. They always go a little crazy when one of them is missing in action. I like that about them. I don’t care for mature Winchesters, not one bit. They’re “insane”, “codependent”, “a little weird, a little wacky”,and that’s how they should stay. It makes for compelling TV. It makes them unique. I love it and I love them, flaws and all.
I am a very happy SamFan! Yesiree, my squee is back, large in charge, lol. I am SO looking forward to this season and do not have a negative thought whatsoever. It is nice to have that feeling back. I welcome all to join me in a joint SQUEEE!!!
Sam sitting in the MOL drinking at the end of 9.23 immediately brought Mystery Spot!Sam to mind for me and from then on I hoped we might get that Sam back in S10. So, in one way, this interview snippet really excites me. It also has me really concerned. And really intrigued.
I wonder if we are going to get the storyline the writers strike denied us back in S3 – the one where Sam saved his brother but went darkside in the process.
Alice. – I totally agree. That is just what I thought of, as well. Each of these guys will do whatever it takes for their brother. It is why I love them. Cannot wait for October. It sounds to me like we are going to see meaty roles for both guys and the 2 brothers each dealing with internal conflict as they work back to each other eventually. In the words of Dean Winchester – just awesome!
Haven’t we done this before? Didn’t Sam go ‘dark side’ pretty much in season 4? Dean thought so, and so did all the angels; Sam was an ‘abomination’ at that time remember? How is this new? Sam will get the blame for Dean’s current state, Dean will “agonize” over his life choices as a demon and be drawn in a completely sympathetic light, Sam will go off the rails looking far worse than Demon Dean could ever hope to look, and then when the dust settles Dean will attack Sam’s choices and hold his questionable acts against him even though he held Sam’s non-questionable acts against him last season. Hypocrisy will reign supreme, Dean will come out smelling like a rose and be seen as a wounded woobie, and Sam will be destroyed as a character forever; damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t; condemned for things that Dean is seen as a hero for. Thanks a bunch Carver…. this just really fills me with mountains of hope for the coming season… NOT. I never thought it would be a good thing to have to teach a night class on Tuesday nights, but maybe it will be a blessing in disguise to not have to witness any of what is coming down the pike.
you know what? Never mind, it is a waste of time. I agree with E is all.
I feel gutted cause i feel to my soul that E is correct about all of this.
Unfortunately I feel this way as well, and I hate it.
I read this pretty much the same way Alice did and I think Jared’s interview confirms it. Sam is going to move heaven and earth to find his brother even if that means using questionable tactics (torture, violence, lies, manipulation, etc.) and once he finds out what has happened I think his rage might be murderous. I don’t think we’ll be seeing the begging he did with the Trickster in Mystery Spot. Watch out, Crowley!
But for me, that’s the problem. Currently, Sam’s moral stance is that “My life’s not worth any more than anyone else’s — not yours or Dean’s…or Kevin’s. ” IMO, this is a good moral stance, the right moral stance, it’s honorable and shows the idea of why these brothers do what they do in the first place which is to save people; that all lives are equally valuable. Currently Dean’s moral stance is that no life is more important than Sam’s, so the death of Kevin was worth the sacrifice in Dean’s eyes. Well, I don’t like that moral stance, its corrupt, it’s selfish and negates The Family Business. People are actually in more danger of getting killed by a Winchester if they end up in the way. The very last thing I wanted to see in season 10 seems to be coming true. Dean’s way, the way of “lets sacrifice anyone who isn’t Sam because it’s worth it, no matter the cost” is going to be shown to be the correct one. Sam will have to go as far as Dean, kill an innocent, sacrifice a friend, to prove he loves Dean and that he’s worthy of the Winchester name. Who will have to die this time around? Jody, Garth, Cas? How about a baby or a pregnant mom? Nobody is safe from this kind of “familial love” and I don’t want to see this type of “love” championed on this show. This isn’t noble to me, it’s completely selfish and grotesque and is no way heroic at all. I was foolishly hoping that TPTB would allow Sam to keep his incredibly limited POV intact. We barely know anything about Sam anymore, but at least we knew this much; that to him all lives are equal and you cannot just trade one for another because that would be wrong, even if one of those lives was his, or Dean’s or Kevins. And he’s learned this BECAUSE of Mystery Spot and all of seasons 4 when he went to any and all lengths, (destructive lengths, in which he murdered an innocent girl while she was being held hostage by a demon) to get revenge for Dean. So will those lessons, those years of doing the most reckless thing end up meaning nothing? Dean condemned Sam for his choices in season 4, for being willing to go off the rails for him and the world and then he condemned Sam again for NOT being willing to go off the rails for him in season 8, so I guess we are back to Sam going off the rails for Dean again. I thought Sam had learned from his mistakes in season 4, but apparently not. And no one will thank Sam for any of it, no matter what he does.
And no one will thank Sam for any of it, no matter what he does.
Truer words have not been told.As far as the thing stands..Dean was the one who gets credit for saving the world (Charlie) and Sam was the one who is responsible for the apocalypse (tracie). As far as I am concerned the show has for a long time been forgetting their established canon as far as Sam goes..eg “I lied”..what about what? so nice of them to give Sam this two word dialogue but if you remember the heart wrenching soliloquy that Dean got when Sam died *sniff* and as you said the one thing god forbid they had established
”My life’s not worth any more than anyone else’s — not yours or Dean’s…or Kevin’s. “
Who cares about that Dean will be a Demon but Sam is the monster.. can we go without a season reminding that Sam is the monster?..wait one more better this season…even when Dean is having the Mark of cain ,when his soul has been twisted …we have to wonder who is more monstrous.Come on show …give us more credit we know that the answer to that wondering,it is always Sam.Selfish…Sam,monster …Sam, Uncaring…Sam, Unloving….Sam…Yes we get it and thank you for giving us some more of the Same.
Frankly when even in this season we will wonder about Sam..Yes we get it Even if Sam has taken responsibility for his parts in the mistakes and reminded every season and Dean, Castiel have not and are not even reminded by the show (one or two times without any condemnation)…Well foolish me Dean and cas have big big hearts *sniff*..Even when every other season we have characters reminding us about Sam’s part while being mum or ignorant about Dean’s and Cas’s parts,Even when we have some more insight (manipulative) into Dean’s childhood sacrifices *sniff* ..while you know that younger brother plays with planes without any mind to the brother who he was without for some months..who cares about Sam’s childhood..When Dean’s monster friend gets to live and chooses when he wants to die and Sam’s monster friend is a monster or gets killed..because you see they are Sam’s friend and they WILL fall off the wagon..it is natural that WE HAVE TO WONDER NEXT SEASON WHO IS THE REAL MONSTER.
While earlier I thought there will appear a character who will thank or atleast mention Sam for his huge part in saving the world…after this season I know that that particular thing will only be found in fanon or fanfiction.
Yes E I will go a little further and Say it will be a pregnant woman who was awaiting a child for so so long and after killing the mother and the unborn child in front of the father then kill the father…you know as a tribute to Game of Thrones.
Me bitter? oh yes ,I am.
Yes, I’m bitter, too! Decision to make…do I want to watch?
It is like Sam has to be a monster because when Sam asks Dean about how foolish decisions of Dean lead to him being demon Dean can say well Sam “you did not need to be a demon Sam, you are already a monster”.Jo1027,I am asking myself the same question.I feel a tug to give the tptb a chance but that tug is so faint it might as well not be there. It feels like I will desert Sam to his fate in the hands of these wolves (tptb) .Atleast he will have his fans right. But It will be hard to sam slowly and inexorably turn into Dean .
Honestly anonymousN, it is too soon to give up. The season hasn’t started yet. Sam’s story sounds like it could have real promise. JC’s ONE sentence should be taken with a big grain of salt. I didn’t like it at first. But after some thought I realize thy are NOT going to turn Sam into a monster. I think he will go real dark and do some things he mightn’t ordinarily do and that is ok with me if it is about saving his brother. Hopefully not compromising his basic beliefs about what he considers “going to far”. I understand and agree with some of the issues Sam fans have. It’s not always easy considering many of the anti-Dean posts I read here. I just want to caution about over-reading things into every spoiler. Jumping to conclusions based on every utterance of an actor, show runner or whomever is fruitless. They are trying to generate buzz. I say tune in and if it turns out your worse fears are realized, then tune back out and don’t look back! 🙂
The ONE thing I didn’t want in S10 is for Sam to back down from his moral high ground, re: the angel possession. It sounds to me like that is what they are ultimately doing with this. I don’t want Sam compromising his ethics to save Dean. Sorry, but Dean brought this all on himself and he needs to live the consequences of his own actions and not be blaming Sam (which is what I think will happen based on these interviews). That makes me so angry that I just feel like saying the hell with it. Maybe I’ll calm down by the time S10 starts, dont’ know.
I’m starting to feel like E’s drug dealer. But…
I’m also trying to examine morality and the lengths one may or may not go through to accomplish something in my OTHER fan fic series (”http://spnverse.wordpress.com/”). Just saying, might be the cure for what ails you. 😉
Hook me up, Nate. If your fic has a Sam that thinks, acts, and talks like a real person, if he shares his POV and is allowed to speak in complete sentences then it may just be the fix I need.!! Thanks!
That’s in the H-Day series going on. That one above is a examining new characters at the moment just so I can keep in canon and play around without baggage. XD
