CW announces Supernatural Bloodlines/Tribes Will Not Be Picked Up
The CW announced series cancellations and pickups today.
They responded to the negative reviews of Bloodlines and announced they are not going to pick it up.
From Entertainment WeeklyThe Supernatural spin-off. Tribes, or Bloodlines, or whatever the title — it’s dead. The Supernatural project was one of the highest-profile pilots this year, spun off from The CW’s 9-year-old veteran Supernatural, with a pilot that went on the air this season. So initially, Bloodlines (which changed its name from Tribes) was considered very likely to move forward, yet fan reaction to the pilot was largely negative — EW’s own informal poll showed only a third of viewers thought it was worth continuing. Sources say The CW is leaving open the possibility of spinning off Supernatural in another concept down the line.
I would watch a spinoff. In fact I was going to give Bloodlines a try if it had been picked up. But I think there are better concepts out there.
Leave SUPERNATURAL out of the title.
I want more shows shot in the USA.
if they do a spinoff then they should use characters we are familiar with and have grown to love, or even despise. supernatural fans are a more mature audience and that should be considered if a successful spinoff were to happen. they can’t use a concept that caters to the very young alone. bloodlines felt more like a spinoff of the originals than supernatural….a glorified monster soap opera.
my hope is that they don’t give up on a spinoff and they actually work off suggestions made by the fandom. Sam Colt, MOL, Ghostfacers making a comeback:p any of those make much more sense than what we all had to endure last week. Better luck the next time around.
YES, THERE MUST BE A SPINOFF of some kind. Not just a PREQUEL either….
A bonafide SEQUEL, with known charaters.
There would have been so many possibilities for a spin off but to come up with Bloodlines must have been the worst of.
I favour something from the past and even there are countless possibilities. Like the younger years of our grumpy old man duo, or the Campalls arriving in the states or the men of letters.
Or something from today, how about a spin off with Felicia Day. She is fun and a femal lead would be fine. Maybe she brings Dorethy along.
And those are just the ideas I come up with without thinking. Don’t let me start thinking about it or the list would be endless.
I too hope they try again, learning a few lessons from Bloodlines:
1.) Don’t rip off plotlines from the original (murdered girlfriend launching hero into hunting; mysterious missing dad, etc.)–they just come across as pale imitations.
2.) Cast strong actors; looks alone aren’t enough if you want the audience to emotionally connect with the characters.
3.) If you want an ensemble cast, don’t try to shoehorn them all into the pilot–there’s no way to do that many people justice in 42 minutes. Go with a select few, then introduce the rest when and if it’s picked up to series.
4.) Think carefully about where you place the embedded pilot within the season. I realize Bloodlines was likely inserted as Episode 20 because it would air shortly before Upfronts week; if the buzz had been strong, the CW would have been in a prime position to market that buzz to advertisers. The problem, of course, was it also really interrupted the mytharc flow of the mother ship, in a season already plagued by poor pacing.
5.) With the cancellation of Revolution, it looks like Ben Edlund’s available – bring him back into the fold, writing for SPN and brainstorming for a spin-off. (OK, this last one is more wishful thinking on my part, but a girl can dream, right?)
Arrow had the intro episode for The Flash early in the season where they introduced only the Flash. Then they rounded out the cast later in the process. Originally they were going to have a full pilot at about episode 20, but the idea was strong enough that they didn’t. It worked and it was picked up. So with a strong enough concept, they could bring in a few characters for a spinoff in an early episode and still have the show work. The pilot may have worked against Bloodlines. The network was behind the idea of a spinoff, but the audience reaction was not good. Having Ennis introduced in an early episode with a less identical backstory would have given them time to fine tune the series.
Excellent example. It’s kind of the Iceberg Approach: if you can impress them with what’s above the surface, then they’ll really be wowed when they see what’s underneath. 🙂
Hi Scullspeare, wholeheatedly agree. The bottom line for me was that it was boring. Due, I am sure, to the things on your list. I would love to see BE back in the fold. Eric Kripke too, but that will never happen!! A girl can dream right? 😉
Maybe if we both wish hard enough…. 😉
