TV Fanatic Supernatural Roundtable – 9.20, “Bloodlines”
It’s about five days post mortem and it’s time to revisit “Bloodlines” for what I consider to be the last time. After this, I plan on moving forward and getting heavily in the hopefully explosive last three episodes of the season.
For those that didn’t read my displeasure over the episode on Twitter, I hated “Bloodlines.” I did go into it with an open mind, but after it was all over it infuriated me that anyone thought this would appeal to a “Supernatural” fan base or be worthy of carrying on the “Supernatural” name. Still does. It should have been it’s own individual pilot, not tied with “Supernatural” whatsoever. My anger shows in my responses to Sean McKenna’s questions during this week’s “Supernatural” Roundtable at TV Fanatic. Carissa Pavlica and Sean didn’t like it either, although they had far better diplomacy their disappointment than I. I adore them both for that and I think you’ll find the responses to be rather unimanious in answer, even if tone is different.

Here’s Sean’s review too. He gave it a 2.4 out of 5.0.

I think what gets me the most is when you think about the basi9c premise Supernatural started out with. In the beginning Sam and Dean stood between humanity and evil, defending us against the things in the dark that wanted to kill or destroy us. But lately the winchesters (especially Dean) have joined with the things in the dark; calling it family and/or working with them to the detriment of humans.
Bloodlines has taken it one step further. Bloodlines has the main charector Ennis sideing with the things in the dark against humanity. At the very core if you look at Bloodlines through the scope of Supernatual. Azazel would have gotten the sympathetic treatment while John, Sam and Dean would have been seen as the monsters for trying to seek justice for Mary and Jess’ murderes.
Alice I am so with you on this episode. Why in the hell did TPTB think that this was the right audience to show this episode to? But beyond that it was probably the worst hour of television I have ever watched (I even watched it again. What a mistake!). I haven’t agreed with your assessment of S9, I know you have issues and so far, until this bloody awful episode, I have enjoyed it. But when Dean got that phone call from Cas I wanted to jump in that car with Sam and Dean and get the hell out of this mess.
I watched Slumber Party last night and whether that premise would have worked or not that is how you introduce a spinoff. You have characters that your core audience already cares about, you introduce a fun new character and set up a scenario that has a potential for an adventure that might appeal to a wide variety of fans. The ratings for Bloodlines were great. What a wasted opportunity. I agree with you, all of the brilliant minds behind this project and this was the best they could do? I’d hate to see what got edited out.
I really hope this doesn’t affect the ratings going into the final episodes. Ok time to breathe and let this go….
I think this spin-off is for the CW crowd and not the hard core Supernatural fan. Maybe Mark Pedowitz asked for a SPN show geared to the general CW fans and that’s what this is about. They want a new audience which is fine. I hope it works but I may not be watching.
EW or E online is reporting that Bloodlines is a no go. Reaction from fans was overwhelmingly negative. I really do feel bad for everyone involved. Star Crossed and the Tomorrow People are also canceled.
Found the news out too. Good luck for the people involved and where ever they will go next. And also maybe to the spin-off to the future that might still be.
